They slept in each other’s arms. Kagome was oblivious to the world around her and Kouga was ever aware of the slightest sound. Each time she moved in her sleep, he would pull her back into his arms, keeping her where he wanted—where she needed—to be. In his arms. The way she snuggled into his arms melted his heart. Kouga was the first to wake, noticing the still darkness that surrounded them. He could see the swirls of fog moving along the water’s surface. He was one happy Wolf Prince. He was with the woman of his dreams; she in his arms, and he’d held her all night.
He rubbed his cheek against her hair and felt her shift in his arms, rousing from the deep sleep. She stretched, her body rubbing against his sensually. He knew the moment her eyes opened and knew the moment she closed them. He really didn’t want to leave the peace they’d found but they needed to get back. He hadn’t intended for them to stay all night but hell, she’d felt so good in his arms that he hadn’t wanted to leave.
“Wake up, sleepy head.” She heard his voice whisper in her ear, his warm breath a teasing caress. It was still dark so why was he so intent on making her get up? She settled deeper into the warmth surrounding her and wrapped her arms around the hard, muscled ones surrounding her waist. He chuckled, the sound vibrating against her back as her eyes flew open.
“Mai—!”
“Is fine. I’m sure someone stayed with her. Good morning.”
She felt his lips dip lower, moving over the shell of her ear as he spoke. His voice was deeper, still sleep filled. “We stayed out here all night.” She knew she should get up but she couldn’t bring herself to leave his embrace.
“Mmmhmm.” Was his only response.
She sighed softly and closed her eyes. What was wrong with her? The thought lingered in her mind: Not once had Inuyasha held her like this. The peace she felt right now, how right it felt…
"Stop thinking about him, Kagome."
She opened her eyes slowly. “How do you even know what I’m thinking?” She almost turned, just so she could see him but stopped the movement. His eyes alone could seduce.
“You stop breathing sometimes. I can feel the emotions…” And he wanted to take away the pain. He heard the yawn she stifled beneath her hand and chuckled. “We still have a little time. Go back to sleep. Don’t worry…I’ll bring you back before you even wake up…” His words were fading in and out and she didn’t have to be told twice. She barely managed to whisper, “Thank you”, before she was sinking back into the shelter of his arms.

“You stayed out all night with her.” Kumiko snapped, his eyes narrowed as he stared at Kouga.
He turned to face Kumiko. “Are you suggesting that Kagome did something?” Did Kumiko think so little of kagome that she would lay down with just any man? Just like that? Oh, he’d have Kagome in his bed. He didn’t doubt that. She would be his mate.
“Keep your paws to yourself, Kouga.”
Kouga clenched his teeth, a muscle throbbing in his cheek as he refrained from the urge to knock Kumiko dead. “I would never—in all my life—disrespect her. Let’s get something straight, Kumiko. Kagome is my woman. My mate.” He hadn’t taken her or marked her yet but it was obvious to everyone but Kumiko, that Kagome was his. “When she takes a mate and I promise you, she will, it will be me.” He smiled, baring his teeth in a silent snarl. All Kagome had to do was tell him no—and truly mean it. But her health and happiness came first. If he had to hurt her feelings to keep her safe, then so be it.
Kumiko growled and Kouga swore he could feel the other man’s stare digging into his back. Kumiko wanted Kagome, yes. He knew Kouga didn’t have an official claim to Kagome. Not until she accepted him or bared the mating mark of the Alpha.
Kouga turned away. He’d had enough of Kumiko and his jealousy issues for right now. He heard a small rustling in the bushes behind him and smiled, sniffing the air. He turned in the opposite direction as if he hadn’t heard a thing. Mai jumped out of the bushes then and landed on his back, her small legs circling his waist from behind as her arms caught his broad shoulders. “I got you! You didn’t even know I was there!” She howled and squeezed his shoulders. “I got the leader of the Wolf Pack!” She laughed happily and he hooked his arms behind her knees and set off into a run.
“Can you tell me how you met Mommy?” Mai pointed to a deer off in the distance as it bounded away, sensing the two predators near it.
“Well, Mai, we met years ago. Before you were ever born. She’s the reason why we don’t kill humans.” He jumped so she was lifted off his back purposefully. He chuckled and ran faster. “She’s changed me for the better, I say.”
“You love her, don’t you?” The question stunned him. Not because he didn’t know if he loved her—because he did—but because it was coming from a 6 year old. She shouldn’t even know about love, much less care about it. He nodded. “Yes, Mai. I love her very much.” He opened his mouth to continue but a huge crashing sound echoed up through the forest and then a loud popping noise came from the direction of the caves. He halted and turned, frowning. Then he heard a roar and then the savage growls of the wolves.
“Shit.” He whispered and tightened his grip on her legs as he took off towards the back.
“Something’s wrong.” Mai called out over his shoulder. She’d heard the crash as well and a tiny growl emitted from her small body. She smelled another demon. It didn’t escape his notice that they had been attacked by a wide variety of demons lately.
“Fuck.” He growled and skidded to a halt. Mai jumped off his back and growled again and he found it utterly amazing that even young pups had the urge—the strength—to fight. He was looking forward to the day when he had pups of his own. With Kagome.
He didn’t pretend to understand it. The recent attacks—all directed at his pack. Now this. This time it was more than one. The growl erupted from his throat as he landed a punch, knocking a demon flat that dared to even look his way. Immediately he turned, his eyes searching, making sure that his Pack was keeping things in order—well, staying alive. He barely dodged a wide claw as it swung at him. He knocked it out of his way, searching for Kagome’s lithe figure. When he saw a flash of pink light he grinned.
He jumped into the middle of the fight, pumped and ready to fight, taking out the demons one by one. He laughed as he shredded them. They were easy. He literally kicked one in the ass, flipping it over onto its stomach. Threatening his back was not smart. No one threatened his Pack without receiving a little something in return. His ears twitched as he heard a heavy thud and then the sweet, intoxicating smell of blood rise up. “KAGOME!” He roared and spun around. Through the clash of bodies he could see her. And the long, spiked hand that was embedded in her side. He saw the pain that filtered through her precious face and then anger. The demon snarled and ripped his hand up, tearing her skin more. Kouga saw red when she cried out.
He roared as he fought his way to her side. Rage filled his mind, his body as he reached her. The demon turned as he sensed the approach. Obviously forgetting the female on its claws, he turned, his hand lashing out. Kagome hit the side of the cave hard from the turn and hissed from the pain before the claws tore from her flesh. The impact shook the outside of the cave wall and then she heard a crack and a heavy rumble. Kouga glanced up and then down towards Kagome. “KAGOME!” He roared her name again, moving in her direction but not even he could stop the flow of the boulders that fell. He felt the heavy weight crash down on him, covering him, forcing him down. He’d never known such mind-consuming fear in his life. He could only think that as heavy as the rocks were on his body, the tight confines, Kagome was human. Something like this could kill her.
He slammed his hands through the heavy boulders and rocks covering him. He ignored the pain and the blood covering his body. He was set on one thing. The rampaging demons were dead but he didn’t even notice it. His eyes were frantic as he started rummaging through the debris, carelessly tossing the boulders everywhere way. He faintly felt the presence of the others as they started digging, realizing why he was so desperate. “Kagome, dammit, where are you?!” He turned and sniffed the air, desperate for anything that would give away her location. He turned to the left and started chunking heavy rocks, not caring of the scrapes and cuts that appeared on his hands. He saw a pale patch of skin and dug in earnest. He stilled.
“Kagome?” He whispered, dragging her unconscious body out and into his arms. Blood oozed from the gaping wound in her side. Her skin was pale, dirty with traces of blood. He picked her up and darted into the cave. He could feel the blood soaking his hands, soaking into his clothing. “Don’t you dare die on me. Not now. Don’t you dare.” He snarled, laying her on his bed. “Not when I have a chance with you. I won’t let you die, do you understand me?” He grabbed her clothing and ripped it straight down the middle and clamped his hand over the wound to stop the blood flow. “You will live.” He hissed out, his voice full of anger and bone chilling fear. He didn’t stop to admire the body laid before him. She was losing too much blood. “I won’t let you.” He warned her gently. He was not going to lose her. He glanced over his shoulder at Hinta. “Bring me some water and then something to wrap this in. Get the herbs. Now. Then see if everyone is alright.” His voice was harsh but he couldn’t help it.
The woman he loved was dying in his arms.
He clamped his hands tighter over the wound and leaned over her, his face inches from hers. ‘You’re in my pack which means I’m your lead. Everyone does what the Pack leader say’s, Kagome. So you will live. You got that?”
