Chapter 19
Immense satisfaction filled him as he lay next to Kagome, holding her body against his. Years ago he hadn’t imagined, he hadn’t believed that Kagome would be his. Not like she was now. Sure, he’d publically claimed her as his Mate and he’d let that piece of shit dog-demon know it. Doubt had been there, though, that what if she didn’t…That wasn’t the case now and kouga refused to even think about that. Kagome was here and in his arms. Kagome was his. But where Kumiko was concerned, Kouga knew it wasn’t over. Kumiko, the bastard, was too proud a Wolf Demon to accept defeat. It had been the ultimate insult. He didn’t want to think about that right now. What little time he had before the next hunt he wanted to spend with Kagome.
It wasn’t far from his thoughts, though, the upheaval that had happened the last time he’d left Kagome unprotected…He should have killed Kumiko. The bastard deserved a fate worse than death.
--~*~*~*~*~--
She hadn’t claimed to be his Mate, not vocally, where it wouldn’t be in question didn’t escape her notice. Kagome was all too aware of it. The other pack members didn’t say anything. But they didn’t say anything. They didn’t have to. Kouga mentioned that little fact to her every chance he got and with great patience. Why didn’t she just claim the title? Body and soul? Kagome didn’t know. What was holding her back? What was she missing…Kagome sighed, hanging her head. Things hadn’t been nearly so complicated when she’d thought he was dead…But he was alive—she needed him with her.
But that was Kouga. He made life complicated and she loved every minute of it.
That was why she loved him.
The thought caused her to pause, startled, as she stared at Kouga. He was across the cave, laughing at something one of the other men had said. As if sensing her gaze he turned those burning eyes to her grinned that gorgeous fanged smile. Her heart fluttered. She loved him. When it had happened, she wasn’t sure. All that she knew was that she…needed him. If he left her again she would die. She just wished that she could be strong. Be strong like he was, like he needed her to be. Everything he could ever need in a woman.
She clenched her fist. Like HELL. She WOULD be.
She stood, her eyes narrowing as she walked over to him. She couldn’t stop the unsteady beat of her heart as he turned his full attention towards her. God, she loved his smile. She never had to say anything to get his attention. He devoted it to her completely.
His arm snaked out, circling her waist and tugging her down into his lap. “What’s on your mind?” He inhaled her sweet scent. By all that was unholy—her scent was driving him crazy. It had been all day. Even across the room, when she wasn’t looking at him, it teased his senses…
“You ever thought of doing something else besides hunting?” Kagome asked and from the glint in those blue eyes of his, he had definitely thought of doing ‘something else’. She knew exactly what he was thinking of doing…She ran her hand through the fur encasing his right calve and pinched him to bring him back to focus. “I mean, you have plenty of game from the last hunting party. Please?”
Kouga sighed and cupped his hand over hers, twining their fingers together. Why couldn’t he just say no? But she was right, they had plenty of food. He ran a hand over his face, hiding his smile. “What’d you have in mind?” He knew what he had in mind. Her on her hands and knees, positioned just right so he could thrust—
“I’ve seen you rocking climbing. Please?” Except, their version of rocking climbing was different than what her world had considered ‘rocking climbing’. A lot more dangerous. There were no wires, there were no safety nets to catch you if you feel.
She had something better. Kouga.
--~*~*~*~*~--
Kouga knew he should have said no. Three hours later, hell yes he should have said no. As Kagome climbed steadily at his side, her slim hands following his, grabbing onto the rocks that he occasionally motioned her to, he couldn’t help but think how human she was. If she fell and he didn’t catch her…God, he loved that courage running so deep. She had the courage of any member in their pack. She gave and took better than anyone else. He wiped at a bead of sweat rolling down his temple and inhaled. Fuck, she smelled good. Like heat and summer rain…
"Stop it."
He arched an eyebrow and when she replied with a “stop looking at me like that”, he blew her a kiss. Kagome was definitely better at this than hunting.
If he hadn’t been so intent on her, he might have heard it. He might have heard the footsteps, the taunting whispers. And then the heavy rumble that followed. What did get his attention was the thick barreling rock that hurtled towards the spot where he’d been seconds before. He heard Kagome yelling his name.
“Get down.” Kouga snapped out. “Go. NOW.” He looked up, anger boiling up as he saw the cliff overhead. He hadn’t let Kagome go very far up the wall but she was still a good distance…Kumiko stood at the top, a twisted, enraged look on his face. His nose was crooked and that was saying something, since Demons healed pretty quick. His was slow in healing. Bastard deserved it.
"Try this on for size." Kumiko snarled.
He would have called Kumiko’s efforts pathetic and useless. Even insulting and childish. But they were on the side of a cliff and Kouga knew it would only take one jolt, one mishap to jerk them down. He ducked as another boulder was hurtled his way. “Fuck.” He hissed out, his attention snapping to Kagome to make sure she was alright.
Kumiko smiled and Kouga felt chilled to the bone. No. The distance between him and Kagome was a good jump? How the hell could things go so wrong in just a matter of seconds?!
“Kagome—“ Kouga literally launched himself away from the side of the cliff and into the air and down. He heard Kagome whispered something, smelled her fear as she glanced up. Her hold slipped as the rocks raining down pelted her slender fingers. He swore his heart stopped when he saw her lose that precious hold.
“Got you.” Kouga grunted out, hissing out a deep breath as he grabbed ahold of a large outcrop of rocks and with his other hand latched onto her wrist. He felt the burn in his palm as the rock dug into his palm from the added weight of her body. He ignored the pain but he couldn’t ignore the scent Kagome was giving off. Common sense told him to focus on the danger above. He couldn’t understand why her scent was driving him wild, not when she was inches from her death, held up only by his hand on her wrist…And then he smelled it. He understood. It was soft and sweet. His eyes dropped to her stomach and he knew. He knew why her scent had changed.
Kagome was pregnant with his pup.
