Prologue   A Day He Will Never Forget

They stood around the grave, all dressed in black. Most of them were family and a few friends. They stood silently, watching one person in particular. He stood with his umbrella closed, the cold rain pouring down his face and back. He was soaked, he didn’t care. They stood, holding their umbrellas over, keeping them dry.

As they shoveled the wet earth over her casket, he dropped the umbrella and growled at them in a feral way. He set his hands to the earth, burying her with the love he had given her in life. They stood back watching him as he grew covered in mud and grime. One man stepped forward, a man with short black hair and eyes that once were always laughing, he reached a hand out for his friend’s shoulder and withdrew his hand rapidly as the man growled. He remained close, unafraid of him.

Wiping a wet hand across his face leaving a streak of mud, he stood, satisfied that the coffin was fully covered by the soggy earth. He lifted his face towards the weeping heavens and howled in anguish, painful sobs wrecking havoc on his body. The rain let up, falling to a light sprinkle as the funeral procession headed back to the warmth of their cars, leaving the two men in the rain.

“You have a reason to live.” the one with the short black hair said softly, as he watched his childhood friend mourn. “You can not let yourself go, however much you want to.”

“Damn it! Why did she have to die? She knew there was a high risk! We knew! I told her she didn’t have to! I was happy just to have her by my side!” he slammed his fist into the soggy grass.

“There is a reason for everything. She was called away, her time with us was finished. She left you with a gift too precious, too great for you to perish. Will you let her death, kill you and your daughter?” He said as he picked up the discarded umbrella and opened it. He held it out to his friend.

The tall man with molten gold eyes and dark gray hair looked at him with such sorrow and pain as he grabbed the umbrella. “You’re right as always, what would I do without you?”

“Well, shall I take you to my apartment to change?” he said.

“Yeah, they wouldn’t let me in the nursery the way I am now.” He said as he followed him to the black car. “Miroku, this…this wasn’t my fault was it?”

“InuYasha, she died providing the world with new life, giving you the gift of life itself. You are not at fault at all, no matter how much it feels like it was.” Miroku turned to his friend, stunned and suddenly fearful. “She wanted to have your children, as you wanted her to have yours. Becoming a parent has it’s risks. You took a heavy loss, but you have the one thing that she gave her life for, your daughter. How is this your fault?”

“She was happy, so happy when she was pregnant with her, I tried to tell her how much pain, how much pain she would go into. Her body wasn’t made to bear children. The doctor warned her. He warned us. We chose to ignore it, it made her so happy to get the treatment, so happy…” InuYasha trailed off as he got into the car. They drove in silence, one not knowing what to say, the other so torn up inside he felt his heart crack and shatter. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
