Just a Note to Say…..

Silent Compliment

Chapter 4

Kagome silently entered Mr. Houkimato's office and sat down in the chair across from his.

"I am disappointed in you Kagome," Mr. Houkimato began, "I never expected to see you here, from all the compliments you have received from previous schools and teachers."

Kagome kept her head low and every now and again she nodded.

`I'm gonna get suspended.' `I'm gonna get suspended.' `I'm gonna get suspended,' her mind kept repeating.

"Kagome?"

She looked up at the man with sorrowful eyes.

"Yes?"

Mr. Houkimato sighed, "What am I to do with you? You have one of the best teacher reports from your high school I have ever seen. Yet you manage to disobey the most important rule. My question to you is, why?" Kagome breathed in deeply then exhaled.

"Well…" she began, "I really needed to talk to my friend. It was important." Mr. Houkimato nodded, "If I may ask, what is so important?"

Kagome shrugged her shoulders. "I just wanted to make sure she was ok. We both were really distraught when we were separated and I wanted to see if she was bearing it ok."

"I see."

He folded his hands together on the desk and dabbed his forehead with his handkerchief. "I am disappointed, but since you meant well, I will let you go this time with a warning, Kagome. If you wish to continue to learn here, then you must stay to your section. And I am hopeful to not see you again in my office."

Mr. Houkimato stood up and Kagome followed. He walked her to the door and opened the door for her to leave.

"Good bye," he said, "don't miss your next class now." Kagome smiled,

"I won't. But Mr. Houkimato, may I ask you a question?" Kagome was now determined to get an answer.

"Yes…"

"Why is the school sectioned? I mean, what is the purpose of it?"

"Good bye, Kagome," Mr. Houkimato said sternly and closed his door.

Kagome just stood there shocked.

"That was not the answer I was hoping for," she said disappointedly and walked away.

"Do you think everything's alright?"

"For the last time Sango, YES!!" Ayame said angrily. "Yes, everything's fine. Yes, she'll be fine. And No, she won't get in trouble. Now just, calm down!!"

Sango sighed and leaned against the wall.

History class just finished and it was lunch. She was sitting in the back field of the school, leaning against the wall next to the garden.

The back yard of the college was absolutely fantastic!! There was a giant track for running, a little forest area for picnics, fountains and picnic tables absolutely EVERYWHERE! And several ponds with fish and ducks.

Sango stuck her hand in the garden soil and let it run through her fingers. She sighed heavily and sniffled.

"Ok, I'm sorry. Was I being annoying?"

Ayame was trying to paint a picture of one of the gardens and Sango kept interrupting her.

"Yes, you were and are," she said jokingly. Sango hit her in the arm playfully, "Oh, well thanks a lot!" she said sarcastically.

Miroku was walking outside with Manten. They were obviously laughing about something hilarious, because Miroku was holding onto Manten's shoulder so he wouldn't collapse.

"Hey, Sango!" Miroku called.

Sango rolled her eyes and answered with the best answer she could think of,

"Yeah!" She sighed angrily at herself, `Stupid,' she thought.

"I was just talking to Manten and he said that this guy named Inuyasha is a major playboy and is asking to take naked photographs of attractive girls."

Sango scrunched up her nose, "What an ass. Oh crap! I think he's in Kagome's section. Poor thing." Sango's voice lightened and Miroku walked up to her and put an arm around her shoulders.

`What is he up to,' she thought, giving his a questioning glance.

"It's a shame isn't it? That no beautiful girl can feel safe anymore, because jerks like this Inuyasha are making their moves on them."

"So?" Ayame questioned, "What's it to you?" Sango smiled, wanting to thank Ayame for her question.

"What's it to me?" Miroku asked offensively. "I have recently met two gorgeous," Miroku purred as he looked at Sango, making her call him a pig, "and, that I don't want this lecherous creep hanging around my women."

Sango shook off Miroku's arm and looked appallingly at him.

"You're women?" she said raising an eyebrow, "What makes us your women?"

Miroku smiled deviously, causing Sango to no longer want to know the answer.

Miroku winked at Manten and held Sango in an embrace.

"That jerk, Inuyasha, will never touch you Sango, because you are my sweetheart."

Sango's voice squeaked with surprise, "Sweetheart?"

Miroku quickly moved his hands to Sango's butt, making her scream and slap him in the face.

"Hentai!!!" she screamed.

"Keep your hands of my friend's ass, you creep!" Ayame yelled at Miroku and slapping him on his other cheek.

Ayame gathered her stuff and took off with Sango.

"Wait!! Sango!" Miroku called. "When are we going to make plans for our painting!?!"

"NEVER!!!" she screamed at him.

Miroku put a hand over his heart, and his facial features saddened. Manten put a comforting hand on Miroku's shoulder.

"Let it go man, let it go."

Miroku sighed, his hand remaining on his heart.

"Ow," he whispered.

Kagome sat with Eri, Ayumi and Yuka at lunch, Rin was off with some other girls she had met in the section.

"What happened with Mr. Houkimato?" Eri asked impatiently.

Kagome shrugged, "Nothing really." Yuka scrunched up her nose,

"What? What do you mean, `nothing'? Something had to of happened!" Kagome leaned her head from side to side. "Well yeah. But I mean, I didn't get in trouble. He just let me go with a warning." Ayumi smiled, "Uh-huh…But what about in the hallway? Rin went looking for you but saw you talking to some boy and she left back for class."

The three girls looked at Kagome excitedly. Kagome smiled nervously and placed her hand behind her head, "Oh, yeah," she chuckled nervously, "that."

Ayumi moved closer to Kagome on the picnic bench and demanded answers.

"Who was he!?!" she demanded.

Eri and Yuka seemed just anxious to hear who the guy was, but Ayumi seemed like she was going to die if she didn't find out.

"Oh, no one special," Kagome lied. "Liar!" Yuka accused.

Kagome sighed, "All right, I'll tell you, but don't get all freaked out about it ok?" All three girls nodded happily.

"It was….Kouga."

Eri and Yuka both screamed, but not as loud as Ayumi.

"ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!" Eri screamed.

People were beginning to stare, since Eri, Yuka and Ayumi did scream loudly.

Kagome nodded bashfully. "Well, what did you two talk about?" Yuka asked. "About school. And…OH!! Did you guys know that on Saturdays we're allowed to spend three hours with the other sections!?!" Yuka's eyes grew wide and Ayumi became antsy.

"That's amazing!!! How did you find that out!?!" Eri asked excitedly. "Kouga told me," Kagome said coolly. "Why would he tell you that?" Ayumi questioned. "Maybe, because he sort of asked me out."

Ayumi screamed again, but this time it was so loud Kagome fell off the bench and onto the grass.

Eri and Yuka both laughed.

People were now definitely staring at the four girls.

"What's up with them?" she heard one boy say.

She smiled curtly and stood up and sat back down on the bench, elbowing Ayumi gently in the ribs.

"Thanks," she said sarcastically.

Ayumi, Eri and Yuka continued to ask Kagome questions, like, `was he cute in person?' `what color are his eyes?' `do you like him?' `where is he planning to take you?' and that sort of thing.

"I already said that he was taking me out to lunch, but I don't know where."

Rin appeared out of the back doors and made her way towards the girls.

"Hey guys. And…Kagome, why is your skirt all full of grass stains?" Kagome shrieked silently and excused herself.

"We have music class in 15 minutes. Don't forget your stuff!!" Rin called after Kagome as she dashed through the back doors of the school.

Kagome ran towards the elevator and when the doors opened, she didn't notice Amber Eyes already standing in there, and she ran right into him, knocking her onto the ground.

"Hey!" he yelled at her, "what where your goin'!"

She looked up at him and snorted angrily. "You could have at least said something nicer!" Kagome shot back at him. She picked herself up and stood as far away from him as she could in the elevator.

She looked at him out of the corner of her eye, but quickly turned away before he could catch her gaze.

She continued to look at him, until one time, she caught his beautiful amber eyes staring right back into hers.

"Will you stop staring at me!?! It's really starting to tick me off!! If you have something to say then say it!! Or leave me alone!!!"

Kagome was startled by his sudden outburst and she gasped quietly.

"I…I'm sorry. But you don't have to snap at me," she said solemnly. He just rolled his eyes and turned away from her.

"Feh!" she heard him say.

"Look, I'm sorry ok! We just seem to be running into each other all the time. Look, if it makes you feel any better, I don't enjoy running into you either, ok?"

He looked down at her. Her arms were crossed and she was staring daggers right back at him.

"Hmph!" he said, facing his back to her.

"Hmph!!" she said right back to him with much more emphasis.

`What an arrogant jerk!' she thought. `I hope I never see him again!!'

But, being the sweet and noble person she is, Kagome got the guts and apologized.

"Look, I'm sorry ok? We don't even know each other yet we seem to constantly be yelling at each other. Can I at least know your name?"

Amber Eyes kept his back turned to her, but he gradually turned his back away from her when she made her truce.

"None of your damn business," he said, but not as rudely as he normally said things. Kagome ignored him none the less.

"I'm Kagome," she said trying to get him to accept her truce, but…..he didn't.

The doors dinged open and she marched out in front of him.

Kagome reached her dorm room and searched her purse for her keys.

"Where are they?" she mumbled to herself. She began to search her purse frantically for her keys.

`I lost them!' `Oh my God, I lost them!' `Rin's gonna kill me!!'

"Ahem!" Kagome turned to meet the gaze of Amber Eyes and he was holding out his hand. And in it were her keys.

She took them from him, "Thank you," she said. He just answered with the regular "Feh," and he kept on walking.

His room was actually right beside hers and they were both standing outside their doors, trying to open them.

Amber Eyes opened his first.

"Inuyasha!" he yelled before he slammed his door shut.

Kagome just stood there, "Nice to meet you, Inuyasha," she muttered under her breath as she entered her room.

Finally, Kagome and Rin were standing outside the music room door. The teacher was a short and stout lady named Kaede. She allowed her students to call her by her first name.

Kaede told them that she wanted them in groups of two or three. Kagome and Rin were paired and Ayumi, Yuka and Eri were together. The five them planned to get tables beside each other, but unfortunately, the groups weren't for tables, which surprised Kagome, but so she could get to know everyone better. If she saw everyone together, she would be able to remember their names quicker. It seems she was going to choose the seating arrangements.

"I want all of you to stand against that wall over there. Now don't dally, come let's go!" Everyone moved to the wall.

"Now then, if I say your instrument I want you to raise your hands, ok?" Everyone nodded. She began with the usual, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, drums, but no piano.

Almost everyone was put in a group except for her, Inuyasha, Rin and another boy she didn't know.

"Piccolo?" Kaede asked, Rin raised her hand, she was the only one.

It turned out that surprisingly no one played piano except for Kagome. Inuyasha played electric and acoustic guitar and the other boy, whose name is Hiten, played the tenor saxophone and he didn't hear her when she said `tenors.'

Kagome was the last one standing there. Kaede looked at Kagome interestingly.

"You do play an instrument, don't you?" Kagome nodded, "Yes, but you didn't call it yet." "What instrument do you play, my dear?" she asked. "Piano," Kagome answered.

Kaede nodded and took Kagome's hand. "I should have known. You have delicate, slender fingers, perfect for playing piano."

Kagome smiled at the compliment.

Now that Kaede knew everyone's instrument (but may have forgotten) she began to assemble everyone on the orchestra stands.

Kagome was actually placed right beside the piano, and to her right was placed none other than Inuyasha.

She sighed annoyed, but kept her mouth shut.

"Now," Kaede began once everyone was where they were supposed to be, "I want to know how far each of you are in playing your music. So, I will go around to you and ask you to please play the most difficult song you know how to play."

Kagome nodded and began to flip through her `neat and organized' books. She began to look through songs by Mozart, Chopin, and Beethoven and didn't even consider playing one of her own songs.

Even though it wasn't one of the hardest songs she knew how to play, Kagome decided to play a song she was given, one she didn't really like. Her father made it, and he gave it to Kagome, but she didn't like to play it because she didn't like how it sounded.

Kaede asked six people all ready. Some of them were good, but the rest of them made bad mistakes and squeaked. She heard Eri, Ayumi and Yuka giggling in the back.

Now it was Rin's turn. She decided to play a song her great grandmother made, called `Rainbow Ice Cream.'

It was a really cute and happy song. Kagome could tell that it was an Irish song just by the tune. Rin smiled as she played from memory. She played wonderfully. She got the notes right on and made no mistakes at all.

When Rin finished Kagome, Eri, Ayumi and Yuka stood up to give her a standing ovation.

"Very good, uh, Rin, I believe?" Rin nodded.

"Excellent song. Your great grandmother is very talented."

"Was," Rin corrected, "she passed away last year." Kaede nodded her sympathy and continued on to the next anxious looking boy.

The boy, Kagome missed his name, began to play a marching song on his trumpet. The boys around him began to stomp their feet to the music. All the boys began to do this, except for Inuyasha, Kagome noticed. He just sat there staring at the music in front of him. His eyes were locked on a certain section of the page. Kagome stared at him bewildered, but she knew better than to stare at him too long, so she turned away.

Eri, Yuka and Ayumi all went.

Eri, on her flute, played a song called, `Mourning'. Yuka played a marvelous `Pachabel' on her violin, causing Kaede to get tears in her eyes. And Ayumi played a song called, `Ducks' on her clarinet, which made Kagome giggle.

It was now Inuyasha's turn. She was sure like all the other boys, he would play some stupid beat to make all the guys do idiotic motions too, but Inuyasha just sat there.

"Inuyasha, it be your turn," Kaede said. Inuyasha didn't look at her. He just sat there holding his acoustic guitar in his hands.

"Well…" Kaede began. Inuyasha ignored her again.

"Play something, Inuyasha, please?" Kagome whispered. And surprisingly, he looked at her, which made her stutter.

"P-play something," she said again.

Kagome noticed his eyes were all wet and shiny.

`He has tears in his eyes,' Kagome thought.

He sighed and began to strum notes on his guitar. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it made Kagome feel sad.

It was soft and melodious. Kagome had expected him to play some fast rock and roll song, but he chose this sad song that made Kagome feel butterflies in her stomach.

Kagome had tears in her eyes

"This is so sad," she mumbled under her breath. But then, Inuyasha stopped and just sat there.

Kaede looked at Inuyasha and nodded and went to the boy sitting behind him.

Inuyasha was staring at his feet, and then he looked at Kagome. She didn't realize it because she was wiping the tears away from her eyes. She stifled a sigh and awaited her turn. Unaware that Inuyasha's gaze was still on her face.

Miroku stood outside Sango's dorm room and knocked on the door.

"Go away Miroku!" came Sango's voice from the inside.

"How do you know it's always me!?!" Miroku asked curiously.

Miroku heard her walk towards the door, "Because," she began, "who else would be knocking on my door every ten seconds?" she yelled.

Miroku nodded, "Smart," he muttered under his breath.

`I need a plan to get in there!' he thought.

Just then he noticed Manten walking out of his room.

"Hey, Manten!" Miroku called. Manten turned around and smiled, "Hey, buddy, what's up?"

Miroku smiled deviously. "Could you knock on this door and begin a conversation with Sango, please?"

Manten shrugged, "Why?" Miroku rolled his eyes, "You know damn well why, now go!" Miroku pushed Manten towards Sango's room.

Manten rolled his shoulders then knocked, while Miroku hid himself around the corner and spied.

"Dammit Miroku!" Sango opened the door with her arm raised holding an unplugged lamp, but instantly put it down the second she saw Manten.

"I-I'm sorry, I thought you were….never mind." Manten smiled, "I heard that you were an excellent artist and I just wanted to say hello."

Sango blushed at the compliment, but her smiled faded when she remembered who Manten was.

"What a sec, you're friends with Miroku!!" Just as if on cue, Miroku ran around the corner, pushed Manten aside and dashed straight into Sango's room.

"This was all planned!!" Sango screamed as Miroku shut the door and faced Sango.

"Please, just listen to me. Just give me a second!" Miroku shouted back.

Sango stumbled backward and sat on the couch. Miroku crossed his arms across his chest and sighed.

"Sango, please, why won't you continue with our painting?" "Why!" Sango shouted, "I tell you why! You are a disgusting pig!!! You touch my ass every time you see me! Why do you grope me, huh? Miroku?"

Miroku looked away, he could see Sango's red face out of the corner of his eye. He leaned down and put his hand over hers on her lap.

"I'm sorry," was all he said. No answer, no explanation, just an apology. Sango blushed at his choice of action.

"I'm sorry I'm yelling," Sango apologized. "I was just, angry." Miroku nodded.

He kept his head down, so Sango couldn't see his face. She sighed and lifted his head with her hand. Her hand on his chin.

"How about Saturday?" she offered. Miroku jumped up and smiled.

"Great!!" she shouted.

That was all he said. He raced towards the door opened it and stopped.

"Thank you Sango," he said, "I promise you, you'll be pleased!" Miroku ran down the hall whooping and cheering.

"WHO'S GOT A DATE WITH SANGO!?! ME, ME ME!!!!!"

The door closed suddenly and Sango just sat there on the couch.

"Idiot," she said with a smile planted on her lips.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It was Kagome's turn next. Hiten was playing the national anthem on his tenor sax and Kaede smiled at his effort.. He kept squeaking, but he got all the notes right.

`Why am I nervous?' she thought, `I'm never nervous, not usually.'

She kept her head down. This gave Inuyasha the perfect opportunity to glance at her out of the corner of his eye.

The music stopped abruptly and Kagome gulped, "My turn," she whispered.

"Very good, Hiten," Kaede said happily. She stood facing Kagome, smiling down at her. Kagome raised her head.

"You're turn, Ms. Higurashi."

Kagome stood up and walked over to the piano. She sat down on the bench and adjusted her skirt.

She flipped through her book and picked up her father's song, `Song for the Broken Hearted'.

She put the music on the piano and placed her fingers on the keys.

Then as if someone pushed an `on' button, Kagome's fingers began to move. The song started sounding rough, but it was supposed to, that was why Kagome didn't really care for this song.

But near the end, she heard gasps and `wows'. Kagome smiled. She had forgotten how nice the ending sounded. But then she played the last chords and heard the applause.

She got up and sat back down in her seat.

"That was absolutely lovely, Kagome!" Kaede said, Kagome noticed her eyes were shaking with joy.

Kagome smiled, said thank you and looked at Eri, Ayumi and Yuka as they started to whoop and cheer Kagome's name.

Kagome looked at Inuyasha, but she saw his face had no expression.

"Ok," Kaede began, "that's it for today. You can all go back to your dorms until your next class."

Everyone cheered and ran out, saying a "great job" or "that was amazing" to Kagome as they passed.

Rin walked up to Kagome. "That was the most beautiful thing I ever heard! I think you're the best musician in the class!" "Maybe not the best, about average." Rin shook her head, "Average my ass!" she said loudly.

Inuyasha dashed pass them with his guitars flung over his shoulder.

"Where's he going so fast?" Kagome asked as Ayumi, Yuka and Eri walked up to her.

"I dunno, but maybe he's embarrassed at what he said," Ayumi blurted out.

Rin, Kagome, Eri and Yuka looked at Ayumi bewildered, "What did he say?" Kagome wondered.

"He seemed that he was in your music, like it was the only thing around him. Like it filled his head and his heart."

"How poetic," Yuka joked.

"He said, and I say this word for word. "`That girl can play the most beautiful music. Her hands dance around the keys and play songs that connect to the world.'"

Kagome shook her head, "That's not something Inuyasha would say."

`But then again,' she thought, `I don't know him all that well.'

A/N: I know it took me FOREVER to finish this chapter, but now I can work on my 5th. I don't think I'll include a lemon, but there's a chance there might be a lime. But who knows. I think Kagome and Inuyasha will get better "acquainted." I promise I'll try to update either tonight or tomorrow by the latest.
