Chapter 1 Sadness of the Past

There was a time in the world when the Youkai had fully dominated the Human race. What one means by dominated one means, took control over, COMPLETELY. There weren't many Humans in the world that were free. They were enslaved and put to work or simply put into cages, then put into slavery. Sometimes the Humans would sit in those dirty cages for months at a time. There wasn't a Youkai village in the world that didn't have at least twenty Humans. As slaves or pets. Quite sad really. They also put Humans in on display and showed off how they're breeding techniques have `succeeded'. Yes, they bred Humans.

Now there was a particular area in Japan where the Humans were put into zoos. Strange yes... but true. They would raise the Humans on farms then take them to the zoos. Or sometimes they were raised in captivity. The Humans were not allowed to talk, so they eventually forgot how too. This made them considered inferior to the Youkai race. And not all Humans were eligible to be in the zoos on display. If they were over fed, under fed, too tall or too short, they were sent to the crop fields to work. Slavery. There was no problem with killing Humans. In fact, there wasn't a village in Japan you could walk through without seeing a Human being killed. If not killed, then severely beaten. Be they young children or fully-grown.

This area had a zoo, The Shikon Zoo that had an unusual breed. A young creature that had long silver hair that reached his waist. His dog-ears, fangs and claws he was born with made him seem like a monster, but his amber eyes made him look like an innocent child. He wasn't a Youkai. He wasn't Human. He was half Youkai. Half human. Hanyou, if you will. How this happened, they still don't know. The lead "Human Breeder" and also head of the zoo, Naraku, said to have found him one day on the streets. Naraku had long black hair that flowed down his back and some of it was in a ponytail on the top of his head. He was very muscular and strong, as were a lot of Youkai. He was also considered the most powerful Youkai in Japan. He seemed to always wear clothes that were blue and purple and looked very expensive. Naraku recommended putting him up for adoption.

The co-workers of the zoo said, "No one would want a `Dirty Hanyou'". They said `Dirty Hanyou' because he was a supposed, DISGRACE, to the Youkai race, him having human blood in him.

But Naraku said "I don't want the little human mutt to die", not that he cared. He said that they could put it in the zoo.

But the co-workers once again said, "Having a dirty Hanyou was like having a horse that couldn't walk. It will have no use because, no one will want to see it." But Naraku said that he saw good profits for having a Hanyou in the zoo. It would be like having a freak show. So the co-workers gave up and took the Hanyou in.

That saved the Hanyou and gave him a home. But that did not mean that he was treated equal as the Youkai was. He was treated as a Human.

It was his job to make sure Naraku was comfortable. He was a slave to Naraku, since he was able to walk, which was around the age of two. He was expected to do everything that Naraku or his assistants told him. And if he did it to slow or to late, he would be beaten. Kicked, punched or thrown into the corner you name it. How could such a small child survive this variety of cruelty? Remember that he is half Youkai. But all the cruelty did not leave him unaffected. Feeling very afraid and alone, the very young Hanyou became quite timid. No one could walk by him without seeing him cringe with fear.

When he was three years old, he was sent to the crop fields to be among the Humans, to keep out of trouble. That meant that he would not learn how to speak. He could not play with the Human children... if he got near them the parents would shoo him away, thinking that he would hurt them. So, even the Humans rejected him.

He soon was old enough to work. At age five, he was sent to the working part of the field. This was very difficult. He didn't know how to pick the Thorny Brush, a type of weed that had huge, two-inch long thorns that grew over night, without cutting himself. And no one would teach him. So everyday, he would return to Naraku's office with deep, bloody gashes in his hands. During his first few days of `Brush picking' he would run to Naraku, crying, hands bloody from the thorns, thinking Naraku would ease the pain.

But Naraku gives him a nasty look and says "You pathetic beast! Keep your dirty Hanyou blood away from me!" then hit him over the head with his fist causing the young child to fall backwards onto the ground. So, the Hanyou had no one to turn to for help.

The Youkai and the Humans... they treated him like dirt. If he fell down out in the fields, no one would help him up. He had to get up himself. If he did something wrong in front of Naraku, he would be beaten until he couldn't move. No matter how much he cried out in pain... it would continue. But he kept getting up. Something inside kept pushing him to go on.

At age eight he was taken out of the crop fields and into the preparation house. He was suddenly treated like a Youkai... well almost. He still wasn't allowed to speak and was still under the command of Naraku and his assistants. But they didn't force him to work and he wasn't beaten. He was constantly being groomed and was given a new chamber to sleep in. But the Hanyou was still scared of the Youkai. Especially Naraku.
