Kagome's Will
Chapter Fourteen
Finding Truth in the Light of a New Moon
Sesshomaru entered the waiting room again, finding Kagura talking to a woman and young boy. The woman was crying un-consolably as Kagura explained to her the events of the evening.
“So, it was about an hour ago that Kagome's heart stopped. The managed to revive her, but her heartbeat was so weak, the decided it best to put her on life support.”
“Where is she now?” The boy asked.
“She's through those doors.”
“Mrs. Higurashi?” Sesshomaru made his way over to the two women and young boy.
“Mr. Taisho? Thank you so much for calling me. I knew something was wrong, but I didn't think it was this bad.”
“There is more, Mrs. Higurashi.” Mrs. Higurashi looked up at him, her eyes thick with tears.
“Kagome was with child, about seven months along. She tried to protect her unborn child as best she could. In the end, the child was removed and left to bleed to death.”
“Oh, my poor baby. Are you sure it was him? My husband was never abusive before; Kagome told me had lost his temper once or twice, but had never like this.”
“Mr. Taisho?” a voice called from behind him.
“Yes?”
Dr. Kota looked at him. “Mr. Taisho, Miss Higurashi's family needs to be notified. Also, the father does as well.”
“ This is her mother her. Why does the father need to know?” Kota nodded at the woman.
“She is dying. The only thing that can save her is her mate's blood. Same for the little one.”
“Mate's?”
“Yes, a term demons use when they take a spouse.”
“I see. InuYasha is Kagome's mate then right? Why doesn't he know?”
“It was Kagome's wish.”
“That doesn't make sense. Kagome would never hide anything from him, not something like this.”
“I'll explain to her, Sesshomaru.” Kagura offered. “For now, you go see if you can't more blood from InuYasha.” With that Kagura took Mrs. Higurashi by the arm and led her towards Kagome's room.
“Kota? Put in an extra order for InuYasha's blood. I'll explain to him later. Take as much as you need. Kota nodded and left.
Sesshomaru quickly headed for the elevator. When he arrived at the ninth floor, he found out that InuYasha had been taken down to floor two to draw his blood. Rin had gone with him. He felt relieved, but his face didn't show it. He walked past everyone into the Neonatal ICU and looked at the child who fought to hold his claim on life.
“You will make it little one, I promise.” He put his finger in the tiny palm and watched as the tiny-clawed fingers wrapped around his own. He smiled.

InuYasha rolled down his sleeve. He felt drained, and he should've. They had taken nearly four units of blood. He walked out of the lab and into the waiting room where Sango sat with the sleeping Rin. He looked at Sango, who was lost in thought.
“Sango?” InuYasha called quietly. Sango looked up at him, tears brimmed her dark brown eyes.
“Yes.” She sniffed.
“Something isn't right. Tell me what's wrong.” Sango looked him longingly. She was grateful to see Sesshomaru come in behind him though.
“It's time. Come InuYasha, let see if your blood can bring life back from the edge of death.” InuYasha nodded and stood. He looked at Sango, whose gaze was at the girl in her lap. He then turned and followed his brother.
“Have you decided on a name?”
“What?”
“For the child?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Normally, this is where I'd loose my temper. But, I am at loss. I don't know what to do.”
“How so?”
“I don't know what to name it. I know what I would've name my son if-.” InuYasha cut he sentence short. The thoughts that ran through his mind were endlessly painful.
“If what?”
“If Kagome and I had a child together.”
“Well, why not give this child that name?”
“It wouldn't be right.”
“Why?”
“Because he isn't mine.”
“So sure are you.”
“What the hell does that mean?”
Sesshomaru said nothing until they reached the Neonatal ICU. Sesshomaru looked at InuYasha.
“This is where we determine whether or not you are worthy to be a father.” With that he opened the door and entered. InuYasha sat there for a moment, lost in his words. Then, he followed behind him. The different smells of life flooded his senses. The aura in that room was filled with a strong will, as every single baby fought to hold on to life, every child had a will to live. The aura of one in particular was seemingly familiar to InuYasha. He walked over to the child in the corner, noticing the child's transformation as the moonless night had begun. He himself had turned human, but his only change was his hair, as his concealment charm hid his demon features. He noticed though, the child before him had tiny claws. They too disappeared as the moonless night began. He sat there the entire night, watching the small child fight to hold on to life. InuYasha knew that if he made it through tonight, he would live. InuYasha slipped his finger into the tiny hand. He was surprised when the little hand clasped around his finger tightly.
“You're strong aren't you?” As he spoke the baby opened its eyes. As the sun rose he watched the tiny hands regain their claws. InuYasha smiled as he looked at the small baby. His eyes were deep amber, like his. `Hmm, you look familiar.' What sealed the deal was when two small ears appeared on the top of the babies white head.
“No way!” InuYasha pulled away from the baby who started to cry. Ayame came rushing over and quickly put a concealment charm on the baby.
“InuYasha!” Ayame angrily whispered as she turned to look at him. However InuYasha was gone.
-*-*-*-*-
Kikyo sat in silence. Her doctor had said everything was fine, and she could have the baby any day now.
* Flashback *
“Your blood test came back, it all looks good. There was one thing though, didn't you say the babies father was a demon?”
“Half Demon.”
“Well, then. I must explain something. Half Demon males are different from full demons and humans. They can't decide when they can conceive; they have only two nights a month when they can actually impregnate their mate.”
“What are you saying?”
“I'm saying that the child within your belly is human. The night you said you were to have conceived, InuYasha was still a half demon.”
“So?”
“Do you know when his night of weakness is?”
“You mean the night he turns human?”
“Yes.”
“Yes, but why?”
“Kikyo, the child you carry is not InuYasha Taisho's. It is fully human. There is no way he could have impregnated you, as it was neither a full moon nor a new moon.”
“No, I woke up next to him it had to have been him!”

InuYasha ran from the Neonatal room as he began to put it all together. Miroku and Sango, Rin, Sesshomaru and Kagura. They were all here for this baby, why? His senses suddenly flooded with a familiar scent. A scent he longed to inhale. The scent was mixed with blood and tears. Though it was faint, it still lingered. It called to him, needing him. He looked around for Miroku or Sango. He followed their scent to the elevator. Knowing that he could tell what floor they got off on, he went down to the second floor where had left Rin. As he got there, he picked up a familiar scent. He followed the scent to the small meditation room and found the source of the sad but sweet smell. Mrs. Higurashi sat there staring at the small pew, praying. InuYasha knew when he saw her something had happened to Kagome.
“Mrs. H?” he gulped. “Why are you here?” The woman looked up at him, tears falling from her already swollen and red eyes.
“InuYasha, where have you been?”
“What do you mean?”
“How could you have not-?” InuYasha suddenly knew Mrs. H was told about Kagome, Kikyo and himself.
“I don't know.” He said as he hung his head in shame. “I love Kagome, I would never do anything to hurt her.”
“Yet, you choose Kikyo's honor over Kagome's love.”
“….”
“InuYasha, I want you to know that I still believe in you and Kagome. But, there is one thing that vexes me.”
“What is that?”
“You marked her. How did you not know that she was-?” She stopped. She couldn't hold in the pain from seeing her beautiful daughter's broken body. What had made harder still, was she sensed her daughters will to live was gone. It only wished to protect her child.
“Come with me InuYasha.”
InuYasha walked with the woman from the small meditation room. She walked to the elevator. They rode in silence to the first floor. InuYasha was puzzled as she walked out the front entrance.
“If you can find her, you can save her InuYasha.” With that she left InuYasha, knowing what she said wouldn't register. She knew he'd go and look for Kagome, that's what she wanted.
