InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Kids Will Be Kids ❯ An Unexpected Save! ( Chapter 1 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Disclaimer: Unfortunately, I don't and have NEVER owned InuYasha and his friends. Rumiko Takahashi actually owns him and came up with the anime. I thank her SO much for that!

Chapter 1: An Unexpected Save!
Kagome sat upright in her seat as she was slowly starting to fall asleep… Again. Her friend, Eri, shook her for the fifth time today to keep her from completely passing out.

“Wake up Kagome!” Eri whispered as she shook Kagome a second time, this time getting her attention.

Kagome shot straight up in her seat. “I'm awake!”

Yuka sighed. “Kagome, did you get any sleep last night?”

Kagome twiddled her fingers on her desk. “Well… I… Uh… No.” Kagome looked guiltily down at her lap.

“Kagome! You're only eight! You're acting like someone in college studying for exams or something!” Eri practically yelled at her but still quiet enough that the teacher couldn't hear.

Ayumi nodded. “Yes, Kagome, what were you doing last night anyway?”

Kagome looked up to face Ayumi who was sitting to her right. “Well I was -”

Her teacher spoke louder, cutting Kagome off. “Class, we have a new student today.” Kagome's head suddenly spun around to look at her teacher. She loved it when they got a new student. She would be able to meet someone new, which she enjoyed. “I want you all to give him a warm welcome.” Their teacher smiled at the class and then turned to the door motioning for the new student to come in.

The next thing they knew a tall boy, a youkai boy, was standing in front of the class. His huge blue eyes looked shy and kind, while he stood a few feet higher and was built wider than every child in the classroom. His hair was pulled into a small ponytail at the back of his head and, though he was the same age as everyone else, he didn't have much hair to begin with.

Two girls quietly screamed in the back of the classroom as many other kids, human and youkai alike, in the room started to whisper things back and forth to one another about their new pupil. “Quiet down, Class!” Their teacher yelled again to get their attention and the room fell quiet. “I would like you all to say hello to, Jinenji.”

The room was filled with bored hellos but one voice rang across the room with kindness and welcoming. “Jinenji, why don't you take a seat next to Kagome? I can see that she is quite excited to meet you.” Beaming, their teacher gestured to the empty seat next to Kagome and Jinenji sat down.

As he did, Kagome's three friends scooted as far away from him in their chairs as they could. Kagome shot them a disappointed look and tried to start a conversation with Jinenji.

“So… You're a youkai?” Kagome put a hand to her chin to look extremely curious, which indeed she was.

Jinenji blushed a bit, and then shyly answered. “No. I'm a hanyou.” Now Kagome was very interested.

“A hanyou? So you mean you're half youkai and half human?” Jinenji nodded his head.

“That's cool.” Kagome stated almost in awe. She had never actually met a hanyou before. “Do you have any hobbies?”

Jinenji was sort of surprised she had changed to a regular question so quickly and didn't linger on the subject of him being a hanyou. “Yes, I like to help my Ma work in the herb fields.”

Kagome was even more interested now since she was a miko in training, even though she had started early, she was learning many things about herbs and their healing abilities. “Really? Do you know how to use them for healing?”

Jinenji smiled, he had made a new friend already. Someone who wasn't afraid of him or mocked him for being who he was. “Yes. Ma and I give them to travelers or anyone else who needs them.”

Kagome smiled back. “That's very kind and generous of you. If you wouldn't mind… Do you think I could visit sometime? I'm learning about herbs right now. Would you consider teaching me a bit about them as well?”

Jinenji's smile became larger. “Yes. I would enjoy having you over and I would be happy to tell you all I know about the herbs.”

“Thank you.” Kagome slightly bowed in her seat.

Kagome made her way out of the classroom and headed for lunch when she was stopped in the hall by her friends. They looked concerned and confused.

“Kagome, why were you talking to that youkai?” Yuka sternly asked as she stepped out in front of Kagome.

“Yeah, he was scary!” Ayumi squeaked.

“He was so big. He could have hurt you badly if he wanted to.” Eri added.
Kagome put her hands on her hips. “But that's just it. He didn't want to hurt me. And I'm disappointed in you guys. You aren't the Eri, Yuka, and Ayumi I know. You've never been this mean to anyone.”

“Oh my gosh.” Ayumi put her hand to her mouth. “She's right. I can't believe I've become such an awful person.”

Yuka felt very guilty. “I'm so sorry.”

After a moment of silence Eri finally spoke the words on the other two's minds. “Can you forgive us, Kagome?”

Kagome grinned. That always worked on her friends. “Yes. I do. But you need to be nice to him, alright?”

“Alright!” Eri, Yuka, and Ayumi all yelled cheerfully in unison.

And satisfied, Kagome continued on her way to lunch, which she felt like eating outside. She just wanted to eat alone today and her friends always ate inside, so she knew she could be alone out there.

“Stop!” InuYasha yelled as his best friend, Shiori, was pushed to the concrete ground by a group of older human boys.

She had cuts and scrapes all over her body and the impact with the cement had knocked her unconscious. All InuYasha could do was watch because two of the bigger and older boys was holding him down. And that really pissed him off.

“You bastards! How dare you hit a girl! Especially my friend!” He was struggling under the boys' hold but they didn't budge.

The leader of the group was now hovering over him. “Language, language. Watch your mouth, hanyou. After all, you're only a stupid little eight year- old and can't talk to us like that.

“Feh. Who the hell made you the boss of me?” InuYasha made another attempt to get free but again failed.

“We're the boss of you because we're older and can do this.” As soon as he said that he gave InuYasha an Indian Rug Burn on his upper arm causing him to wince in pain. The older boy laughed as InuYasha heard the doors to the building open and close to reveal a human girl, about his age, carrying her lunch.

The older boy's head turned to look at her when he realized that InuYasha was looking her way. “Hey, Higurashi?!” The boy called almost infuriated at the girl. “What do you think you're doing out here?!”

The girl turned her head to look at the boy when her eyes narrowed at him. “I'm eating my lunch. What's it to you?” Then her eyes landed on Shiori and a baffled InuYasha being pinned to the ground. That's when she really got mad.

“What do you think you're doing to them?!” Kagome yelled furiously.

“Heh. None of your business, Higurashi.” The boy snapped at her.

Now that stupid girl was in his face. The boys that were holding him down seemed distracted so he tried to escape again but only ended up failing a third time. “Well… I'll make it my business.” The girl flipped open a cell phone and started dialing a number. When she started talking to someone InuYasha could hear both sides of the conversation, thanks to his good hearing.

“Hello. Mom? It's Kagome.” So the girl's name was Kagome. He'd have to remember that.

“Hello. What is it, dear?” Her mother sounded curious, if not a bit concerned.

“I've got a problem. Can you help?”

“Yes. What is the problem?”

“Well… There're these boys that are bothering me…”

And like that, the boys took off running. InuYasha was completely confused and frankly, had no idea about what to do but sit there and wait.

“What would you like me to do about it, Kagome?” Now her mother sounded worried.

“Never mind, Mom, they're gone now.”

“Oh. Well have a nice day, honey.”

“Bye, Mom.” And then she hung up.

The girl immediately grabbed her backpack and ran over to Shiori's side. “What happened to her?” The girl sounded very concerned for Shiori. Frozen from shock and confusion, InuYasha just sat there until he realized she was talking to him.

He softly growled. “She got scraped up and cut pretty badly, and then they pushed her to the ground.” It only took Kagome a few minutes to finish with Shiori. She's skilled at healing. InuYasha thought as he tapped his claws on the concrete

“Your name's Kagome, right?”

Kagome nodded and then turned to face him. “Yes. What's yours?”

“InuYasha. She's Shiori.” He said gesturing to the grey haired girl, bandaged and resting her head on the pillow Kagome had gotten from her bag.

“Now let me take a look at y-“ She stopped mid-sentence and was now staring at him in awe, which was making him nervous.

His expression changed from nervous to annoyed in a heartbeat. “What?”

Kagome was now completely starry-eyed and was freaking InuYasha out. “T-Those… Ears… Are… So…”

He did not like where this was going.

“Adorable!” With that Kagome reached out and rubbed his furry puppy ears.

InuYasha was frozen… Again. But this time it was out of pleasure, which he hated to admit, and surprise that she would do that in the first place. But it didn't last long.

Who the hell does this girl think she is?

“Um… What are you doing?” InuYasha asked, annoyed.

Kagome pulled her hands away. “Oops. Sorry. HeHe. I guess I got a little carried away there.”

A little?

“Why'd those guys run away when you called your mom?” InuYasha asked as Kagome was fixing him up.

Kagome stopped what she was doing to look at him. “Them? They live on my street and they cause a lot of trouble as you can plainly see.”

InuYasha nodded.

“When they mess around I tell my mom. In turn she tells their parents and they get in big trouble so they've learned not to mess with me.” Kagome laughed. “I think they're more afraid of my mom than me, though.”

And with that she went back to healing InuYasha. He wasn't that badly hurt, at least not as bad as his friend.

“Why were they picking on you?” Kagome asked not looking up from her work. “Did you say something that upset them?”

InuYasha looked down. “No.”

Kagome stopped again and looked at him. “Then what happened?”

“Shiori and I are hanyous. Humans think we're monsters. Demons think we're weak.”

Kagome was saddened. She had met three in one day and it seemed they were all picked on. Or looked down upon.

“I'm sorry. No one should be treated that way. No matter what.” Kagome was the one to look down now. She had no idea that people were being shunned for simply being different. I was crazy. It was cruel.

InuYasha was confused. Why was a human girl that had nothing to do with him and didn't know him, pitying him?

He stood up. “I'm fine now.”

Kagome stood up as well. “We should probably go inside now.” She gave him a warm smile. “I think we still have a while left for lunch.”

Before InuYasha could respond Shiori stirred.

“InuYasha? Are they… Gone?” She asked holding her head.

InuYasha smirked. “Yeah. They're gone.”

Shiori stood up and walked over to them, bringing the pillow with her to give to Kagome.

“Let's go inside.” Kagome said heading for the door, lunch and backpack in hand.

InuYasha followed not far behind but stopped when he noticed Shiori wasn't following.

He looked back. “Shiori, coming?”

Shiori nodded and ran to catch up to them.

A/N: I hope that you all enjoyed it. It was pretty long. I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of my longest chapters. I had to get it to a good stopping point. After all it is the first chapter. I had to have a good first impression. Please keep in mind this is my first InuYasha fanfic also. :D I'll try to get the next one up soon. And I was wondering if anyone would mind being my beta. I think I'm going to need one.
