Chapter 15: The Mystery of the Missed Slumber Party

“Kagome, you play with me?” Shippo asked as he shook her from her sleep. Kagome grumbled as she sat up. She hadn't gotten a good sleep last night… At all. If she slept at all it was obviously fitful since she remembered being up at least half the night.

 

Kagome rubbed the sleep from her eyes. “Shippo, what time is it?”

 

Shippo cocked his head. “Uh… It… Ten o'six?” Kagome looked at the clock. Sure enough it was ten o'six in the morning. She smiled at the little boy. “You're really smart Shippo.”

 

Shippo beamed with pride. “Yes, me smart big boy! Thank you Kagome!” She giggled at him. “Can you play with me now?”

 

Kagome grinned down at him forgetting that she was tired altogether. “Yeah, but let's get some breakfast first. I'm hungry.” She emphasized by rubbing her stomach.

 

“Okay.” He agreed happily as he hopped down from the bed. Kagome got off of the bed also and started to walk downstairs with Shippo in her arms. Why couldn't I sleep well last night? Everything's been so weird lately.

InuYasha sat up in bed with his hand over his eyes. He groaned; it felt like he hadn't slept at all last night. “Damnit Kagome. What happened? Did Sango hit me with her boomerang again?” He looked next to him in bed. It was empty. “Oh yeah, I came home last night.”

 

He sighed and got out of bed. InuYasha opened the door and began to walk down the stairs. “Wonder what's for breakfast.”

At noon there was a knock on the door.

 

“I'll get it!” InuYasha called as he made his way down the stairs. His brother was already at the door. “What part of `I'll get it' do you not understand Sesshomaru?”

 

He just chuckled and went back to the kitchen. All he wanted was to piss InuYasha off. “HA! HA! Very funny!” InuYasha yelled sarcastically as he opened the door to see Miroku and Sango beaming at him.

 

“Good morning. Having some fun with Sessy I presume.” Miroku stated with a smile.

 

“Do me a favor, get to the point.” InuYasha demanded impatiently.

 

“We were on our way to Kagome's so… We were wondering if you'd like to come.” Sango explained happily.

 

“Alright, I'll come.” He answered. “I'm going out!”

 

“Be back for dinner!” Sesshomaru called back.

 

InuYasha rolled his eyes as he stepped out of the house. “I swear, he sounds more like my mother every single day.”

Kagome was playing “Trouble” with Shippo when the knocking came to her door.

 

“Hold on Shippo, I've got to answer the door. And no cheating.” Kagome teased as she started walking downstairs. “Me coming too!” He shouted scampering down the stairs alongside her.

 

Kagome opened the door. “Hey Kagome.” All three of her friends said in unison. “Hi!” Shippo exclaimed hopping up on Kagome's shoulder.

 

“Come on in.” Kagome said as they stepped in. Then they all proceeded up to Kagome's room. “So, what we gonna do?” InuYasha asked.

 

Kagome put her hand on her chin in thought. “Ooh! We can play house!”

 

“Oh yay! I love house!” Sango squealed.

 

InuYasha snorted. “That's the girliest game we've played yet.” He mumbled.

 

“No, I think it's a great idea.” Miroku stated with a smile. It quickly turned perverted. “That obviously makes me the daddy. Sango's the mommy.” Then he wrapped his arm around Sango's waist.

 

SLAP!

 

“Get your hands offa me you lecher!” Sango yelled. Miroku sighed dreamily and just continued. “Shippo's the baby.”

 

“Yay! Wait… Me no baby!” Shippo shouted.

 

“He's not calling you a baby. You'll just be the baby in the game.” Kagome reassured.

 

“Oh, okay. Me baby in game then.”

 

Miroku rubbed his hand printed cheek. “Kagome will be the daughter… Our daughter.” He said smirking at Sango. “And InuYasha… InuYasha…” He grinned from ear to ear. “You're Kagome's fiancé.”

 

“W-WHAT?!” InuYasha and Kagome cried both with blushes on their faces.

 

“Okay now kids. Play nice and all of that stuff. Your mother and I are going to do some married people things.” Miroku stated in a deep voice as he somehow managed to pull Sango into the closet.

 

SLAP! SLAP! THUMP!

 

Sango burst out of the closet with a bright red blush on her face. She didn't look happy either. “Kids, why don't we try to help daddy out? I'm afraid he fell down the stairs. I think he needs some ice.” She said sweetly.

 

Kagome and InuYasha looked at each other. “Please?” Sango begged. They looked back at her, nodded their heads, and they dashed out of the room as fast as they could.

 

“Uh… Wah! Me want attention!” Shippo screamed as he dashed down the stairs.

 

Sango cracked her knuckles and looked back to the young monk in training still in the closet. “I didn't fall down the stairs. Why would I need-“

 

She smacked Miroku on the head leaving a huge bump. “That's why… Honey.” Sango added on afterthought.

 

Just then InuYasha, Kagome, and Shippo came back with the ice. InuYasha threw the ice and it landed perfectly on Miroku's bump with a `thunk'. “Yes! Two points!” InuYasha shouted victoriously as he pumped his fist in the air.

 

“Ow.” Somehow Miroku managed to keep a straight face the whole time.

 

“I hungry.” Shippo whined.

 

“Okay, baby.” With that Sango went over to the imaginary kitchen and made an imaginary lunch. Then she handed the “plate” to Shippo.

 

“This no food.” Shippo stated staring at his empty palm. “Yeah it is. It's imaginary food.” Sango corrected.

 

Shippo continued to stare dumbly at his palm. InuYasha snickered at Shippo's stupidity. “Shippo, we're playing house and in house everything is pretend.” Kagome stuck out her hand and started to shuffle some imaginary food into her mouth. “See?”

 

InuYasha sat down by Kagome and did the same. “Yum. Oh, compliments to the chef. Good job… Mom.” InuYasha played along.

 

Sango giggled. “I'm not your mom yet. You have to marry my daughter first.” She teased with a wink to Kagome.

 

Kagome smirked evilly. This was fun already. “Yes, dear, when are we going to get married anyway?” She asked putting her arms around his neck from behind. InuYasha blushed hoping no one would see.

 

“Uh… I… Don't know. C-Couple of months?” He stuttered. Kagome pouted. “But that's too far away.” She whined.

 

“I'm home.” Miroku finally came out of the closet looking totally recovered from the blow to his head. “How's my beautiful wife?” He asked and then slyly kissed her cheek making Sango blush profusely.

 

“How are you my son-to-be? My beautiful young daughter?” Miroku ruffled InuYasha's hair between his ears and kissed Kagome on the top of the head. Kagome resisted the urge to slap him since he was only pretending to be her father. But somehow she knew he was greatly enjoying this.

 

InuYasha resisted the urge to murder Miroku. He didn't have a reason to want to kill him though, right?

 

“How are you my pretty little baby?” He inquired picking Shippo up.

 

“Me no pretty! Me handsome.” Shippo huffed.

 

“Oh, sorry. My handsome little baby.” Miroku corrected himself with a laugh. “Daddy, me get a kiss?” Shippo asked innocently. He hadn't had a father for a long time after all.

 

InuYasha chuckled. “Yeah, Miroku. Why don't you give Shippo a kiss?” He asked making a kissy face.

 

“Of course, why would I hesitate to kiss my own child?” With that he kissed Shippo on the cheek and set him down.

 

“What are you making for dinner honey?” He asked Sango wrapping his arms around her waist. “I think he's enjoying this a little too much.” InuYasha whispered to Kagome. She responded with a nod.

 

“Lasagna.” Sango replied simply. “Wait, can we pause the game for a minute?”

 

When everyone nodded she continued. “I was wondering if you guys wanted to come over for a sleepover tonight. I haven't had one in so long and I figured since InuYasha's our friend now we should at least have our first one with him.”

 

Miroku and Kagome nodded. “What `bout me? Shippo asked feeling a little left out. “I don't know Shippo. Would you feel comfortable sleeping in a house with a lot of sharp weapons in it?” Sango asked in an eerie voice.

 

Shippo visibly shivered. “No.”

 

“There are weapons in your house?” InuYasha inquired curiously.

 

“Yeah, Sango's training to be a demon slayer so she has a training room full of weapons. I'm a fan of the bow and arrows myself.” Kagome explained.

 

“Sounds fun.” Then InuYasha remembered something. “What day is it?”

 

Kagome blinked. “Um… Saturday… Why?”

 

“Can I look at a calendar or something?”

 

Kagome blinked again. “Sure, it's downstairs in the kitchen.”

 

“Thanks.” With that InuYasha walked down the stairs but was back in a minute.

 

“Well?” All four of his friends asked in unison.

 

“I can't come.”

 

“Why not?” Kagome inquired.

 

“Because… I'm busy.” He answered halfheartedly.

 

“What cha doing?” Miroku asked. “…I'm just busy okay. Do I need a reason?” InuYasha yelled stubbornly.

 

“I guess not.” Sango responded. Kagome was still quite suspicious. She grabbed InuYasha's hand and dragged him outside of her room, closing the door behind them.

 

“InuYasha, you know you can tell me anything, right?”

 

“Yeah, I know.” He didn't look at her. He didn't think he could have even kept eye contact.

 

“Okay.” She said with a small, yet sad, smile.

 

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

KNOCK! KNOCK!

 

“InuYasha, why do you insist on staying locked in your room on these nights?” Sesshomaru inquired calmly.

 

“GO AWAY!”

 

“InuYasha… Have you even told your friends about this?” When he got no answer he continued. “If you don't want to tell your other friends… I think you should at least tell Kagome.”

 

Again, he got no answer. “When I come back I would like to know your decision, okay.” With that Sesshomaru walked back downstairs.

 

InuYasha covered his eyes with his hands. He sighed. What do I do?

 

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kagome had been crying since her friends had left the house. She felt really bad. Shippo had tried to comfort her the whole time. He was currently curled up on her lap. Kagome would snuggle up to him multiple times and he had even said that she could cry on him if it made her feel better.

 

Shippo really was a sweetie.

 

They were sitting on her bed in the dark currently. She hoped it would help if Shippo couldn't see her cry. The last thing she wanted was for him to get sad too.

 

When the phone rang she didn't even bother to check the Caller ID, she just picked it up.

 

She sniffled. “Hello?”

 

“Hey Kagome, it's InuYasha. A-Are you okay?”

 

Kagome wiped her tears. “Yeah, I'm fine.”

 

“You sure?”

 

“Yeah, I'm sure.”

 

“D-Do you think you could come over?”

 

Kagome looked at the clock. “But it's ten o'clock at night.”

 

“I know.”

 

“I-Is your brother awake? How could I get there? It's dark.”

 

“My brother's awake. The guy never sleeps. Says youkai don't need it. He could drive you… If you want.”

 

“I guess so.”

 

“Alright, I'll tell him to get you. He should be there in a few minutes.”

 

“Okay, I'll see you in a little bit.”

 

“Alright. Bye.”

 

“Bye.” Then Kagome hung up. She played with Shippo's hair a little bit which caused him to stir. He must have fallen asleep a little while ago.

 

“Kagome.” Shippo rubbed his eyes. “You feeling better yet?”

 

Kagome smiled down at him. “Yeah, I'm okay. I'm going to go over to InuYasha's house; do you think if my mom asks, you could tell her where I am?”

 

Shippo nodded and smiled up at her.

 

There was a light knock on the door. “He's here. Okay, just go back to sleep Shippo. I'll be back later.”

 

Kagome tucked Shippo in her bed and kissed his forehead. “Bye Shippo.” She said in the doorway.

 

“Bye Kagome.” With that Shippo dozed off again. He must have been tired. Kagome opened the front door. “Hello.” She greeted looking up at the tall man that was InuYasha's brother.

 

“Hello.” He said smiling down at her.

In the short car ride back to InuYasha's house Sesshomaru decided to strike up some conversation.

 

“So, you like InuYasha as a hanyou?” He asked looking back at her in the rearview mirror.

 

Kagome stared dumbly at him. “Yes, of course I do. That's what makes him special.”

 

Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow at her. “Special?”

 

“Yeah, everyone has something that makes them different. It could be something small like eye color, hair color, skin tone, or what size clothes they wear. But hanyous are special; I've only met three in my entire life. While the majority of people I've met are humans or youkai. And InuYasha's one of my best friends in the whole world, I like him exactly the way he is.”

 

Sesshomaru was certainly surprised. This girl was certainly a special one herself. She may not think so but many people discriminated against hanyous while she treated them fairly and kindly. Not saying that everyone was prejudice but it was a good fraction of people in Japan.

 

He smiled. This girl was absolutely perfect for his brother. Sesshomaru pulled up in the driveway.

 

“We're here.” He stated turning off the car and taking the keys out. “Why exactly did InuYasha want to see me?” Kagome asked getting out of the car.

 

“That's not my place to tell you. You'll find out soon enough.”

 

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kagome walked up the steps in the large house. When she got up to InuYasha's room she lightly knocked on the door. “InuYasha.”

 

“Come in.” Was the only reply she got. Kagome opened the door and slowly stepped in. InuYasha was hiding himself in the shadows of his room, the only light coming from a dim desk lamp.

 

“You wanna sit down?” He asked softly. InuYasha was sitting on his bed and was obviously telling her to sit down with him even though he had asked her. So she nodded and sat down on the foot of the bed while he sat on his pillow cross-legged.

 

Even though she was closer she still couldn't see him because of how dark it was. “So…” Kagome began. “What do you need?”

 

“Well… I kinda wanted to tell show you something.” He explained not quite sure how to go about all of this. “You've just got to promise me… You won't leave me after I show you this.”

 

For some odd reason InuYasha's voice sounded different. It was a lot more calm and smooth than it normally was. “Yes, I promise. I would never leave you. I'll always be by your side, okay.” Kagome reassured.

 

“Thank you.” He felt like crying at that moment but he would be strong even in his current condition. “I think this will probably explain why I couldn't come to Sango's sleepover.”

 

InuYasha slowly came into the dim light. All Kagome could do was gawk at him. InuYasha looked completely different. Instead of his hair being silvery-white it was jet black. His claws had shrunken down to a much shorter length and from what she could see it looked like his fangs had turned into… Well normal human teeth, though he still hadn't lost all of his baby teeth, like everyone else their age.

 

Instead of his normal golden-amber eyes they were a sort of grayish-blue color. Though, his eyes were still as intense and beautiful as they had always been. InuYasha was human.

 

“You… You're…” Kagome started she was extremely deep in thought. InuYasha could see that as well. She was about as surprised as he was when she put her hands on his face. Kagome couldn't help it she was really interested by all of this.

 

Her hands went to the top of his head. No ears. Then she went back down to where his ears should be. There they were. Two human ears alright. “Oh, wow.” Kagome said in bearly a whisper. “How?”

 

“On the night of the new moon I turn into my human form; being half human and half youkai. Did you see the moon in the sky tonight?”

 

Kagome shook her head. That's right; it was extremely dark out with no light from the moon because it was gone from the sky.

 

She couldn't help but look into his eyes to see how much they'd changed. The color change was obvious but his eyes were softer and they didn't hide his emotions away from the world like his hanyou eyes. She could tell what he was feeling; embarrassed and… Fearful, of what? Was he still afraid that she would leave him?

 

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

He was starting to blush under her intense gaze and she was… Touching his face. Well, it wasn't exactly the reaction he had been expecting. He had been expecting her to think he was weak and then she would leave him for good and never come back. And now she was sitting on his bed with him, in the dark of his room, touching his face. Okay, so it was extremely different from what he was expecting.

 

His whole `turn into a human on the night of the new moon' thing had started to scare him when he vowed to protect Kagome. What if she was in some sort of danger while he was at his weakest? He wouldn't be able to do anything about it. Not to mention he was a kid and not some big strong man/teenager.

 

InuYasha's blush was getting brighter by the minute and he was really hoping the darkness would hide it. If it didn't and she said something he might have to say something that might hurt her feelings. Wait, didn't he already do that? She was crying over the phone.

 

“Kagome, why were y-you crying over the phone?” He asked a bit nervously. He was frightened of what the answer might be.

 

Kagome paused for a minute her hands still on his face. She didn't seem to want to take them off. “Well, you wouldn't look at me when you said that nothing was wrong and when you said you knew you could tell me about anything. And I had the feeling you were still keeping something from me. I… I thought you didn't trust me.” She stated sadly starting to get worked up a bit.

 

“You don't understand. I have never told anyone about this. The only people who know are in their grave or downstairs.” Kagome blinked. “Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru knows.” He practically spelled out for her. “Oh.”

 

Kagome was feeling a little risky so she took her chances and asked the next question. “So… You do trust me?”

 

InuYasha smiled a little bit. “Yeah.”

 

Kagome smiled back. “Thanks.”

 

While Kagome continued to “observe” his human features InuYasha's boyish thoughts were free to roam. Damnit. I hate this. Not only am I weak but… I can't even smell her scent. That pisses me off to no end. Kagome was really close to him and her lips were parted slightly in awe. InuYasha gulped, inaudibly, of course.

 

Damnit! T-This is driving me crazy! He heard a small laugh in the back of his mind. Okay, that was really strange.

 

It's nice to meet you too. Um… First off… Who the hell are you and why are you in my head? That's really starting to weird me out.

 

Oopsy. I forgot, you're kinda thick-headed. Well, I'm your human thoughts. Weird, huh? Yeah, no duh. You just choose to spring up out of nowhere because…

 

Oh yeah, I need to talk to you. You've been doing that the whole time! Just get on with it! Okay, well you're in total denial. What? That was really random. What the hell am I in denial about? I was right. You are stupid… Way stupider than you look.

 

Enough with the insults just get on with what you need to tell me! Since you and I share the same body… If you screw something up I have to suffer for it too. And if you keep yourself in denial that's exactly what's going to happen, you're going to screw everything up. First, would you be so kind as to… TELL ME WHAT THE HELL I'M IN DENIAL ABOUT?!

 

Geez. You're really impatient. Anyway, you're in denial about how you feel for the person in front of you. Kagome? Finally you're getting somewhere. I thought I'd have to spell it out for you. What am I in denial about her for? Oh my GOD! Use your brain, man! Isn't it obvious?! No. Look, I'm not going to spell everything out for you but if you start to take too long I'll be stepping in for you.

 

Okay, that's over with. Now can you tell me a little bit about this whole “human thoughts” thing?

 

I thought that was kind of obvious too but, oh well. Your stupidity still ceases to amaze me. Being hanyou, you're half human and half youkai. This means you have your hanyou thoughts, which are the ones you're using right now, human thoughts, me, and youkai thoughts. You're just lucky you're not talking to your youkai thoughts. That guy's one pushy fellow.

 

Alright. But why do you choose now of all times to come to “talk” to me? Because you're presently in your human form which just happens to be in my field. It's much easier for your HUMAN thoughts to come out when you're actually in your HUMAN state. Get it?

 

Yeah, but am I actually talking to my human thoughts or have I just gone insane and am talking to myself? No, you're talking to me alright. It's a hanyou thing. You'll get used to it. So, am I not allowed to tell anyone about this? You can if you want. Though,most people would think you've gone completely mental. I'm sure Kagome would believe you though.

 

Okay, thanks for the “talk”. No prob. Oh, and remember if you screw up… I'll be back.

 

“Woohoo. InuYasha, are you in there?” Kagome asked waving her hands in front of his face. “Huh?”

 

“Sorry, you just zoned out for a moment. I wanted to make sure you were okay.” She explained beaming.

 

“So, are you done touching my face yet?”

 

Kagome pulled her hands away and put them in her lap. “Yeah.” She said with an embarrassed smile. “I… Um… Guess I should get home now.” She started to get up but InuYasha grabbed her wrist and pulled her back down.

 

“Do you think you could stay? Just for tonight.” He asked shyly. Kagome smiled. That was a new emotion. He had never acted shyly around her before; he must really want her to stay. “Yeah, I told Shippo to tell my mom where I was if she asked.”

 

“Thanks. I'm usually alone when I turn human. All I had was Sesshomaru and I'm definitely not going to spend time with my full-blooded youkai brother while I'm human.” InuYasha explained with a small relieved smile of his own.

 

He looked good when he smiled. In his human form too. “So… What do you think?” He asked obviously talking about his human form.

 

“I like it. But I miss your puppy dog ears.” She teased.

 

“They're not puppy dog ears. They're vicious… Inu youkai… Ears.” He stated stubbornly crossing his arms. Kagome giggled. Her InuYasha was back to normal. “Whatever.” Kagome yawned. “I'm tired. Can we go to sleep? Pwease?” She begged pouting.

 

InuYasha chuckled. “Fine, we can go to sleep if you're tired.”

 

“Hurray!” She exclaimed. InuYasha's bed was actually bigger than hers so they definitely had enough room.

 

“Goodnight InuYasha.” Kagome said with another small yawn. “Goodnight Kagome.”

Later that night when it got late enough that he thought they'd be done talking Sesshomaru walked up the stairs figuring Kagome would want to go home by now.

 

He didn't hear either of their voices through the door so he slowly opened it and peered inside.

 

What he saw made him grin from ear to ear. Kagome and InuYasha were sleeping in his bed and he was hugging her to him like a stuffed animal.

 

He almost started laughing. His little brother, at the young age of eight, had already found that special girl Sesshomaru had always known he'd find. He was so proud. If only InuYasha's father and mother were here to see this.

A/N: Wow. My longest chapter at 13 pages. I'm impressed with myself. I had to get InuYasha in his human form. I was starting to wonder what would happen if InuYasha turned into a human in KWBK (the short for the title) and then I answered myself by writing this.
