I can't believe I tried to kiss her. Inu Yasha thought as he drove to the office the next morning. What's worse, I can't believe she DIDN'T kiss me! He growled under his breath. Pulling up to the underground garage he flashed his ID to the guard, who pressed a button to let the gate up. Inu Yasha sped through till he found a close parking spot. He slammed his car door behind him and walked to the large metal doors. He looked directly into the retina scanner and waited as the machine scanned his eye. A noise above him rang, and the doors unlocked. Inu Yasha opened the doors and let himself in. They shut behind him as he walked to the many elevators. Standing in front of an elevator he mashed the button several times impatiently. The elevator finally 'dinged' and the doors opened. Getting on, he gave a sigh of relief that no one else was there to bother him. One of the benefits of getting to work late.
The elevator went up several floors, and in no time the doors opened and he stepped out. He walked down to his office, but as he rounded a corner, saw a highly annoyed looking female demon waiting at his door. He quickly stopped in his tracks and hid around the corner. Thinking quickly, he back-tracked to the elevators and hurried in. He pushed Sango's floor and waited. He didn't know who she was, but chances are he pissed her off somewhere somehow, and he wasn't in the mood to deal with a bitchy demon.
When the doors opened he walked down to Sango's door. He knocked several times loudly, waiting for her to let him in. Moments later she opened her door and gave him a confused look. "Can we talk?" He asked, walking into her office.
She scoffed. "Sure. Come on in! "
He rolled his eyes at her. "Shut up and listen. I need you to talk to Kagome for me."
"Why?" She asked as she walked back to her desk.
He stuffed his hands in his pockets. After a few minutes in silence, he told her about the date. She listened in silence while he told her all about, ending with Kagome's confession of her fear of Inu Yasha, and his job.
"And you want me to talk to her... why." She said.
"I need you to talk to her about your job." He explained.
"But why? Then she'll just be afraid of me, too."
"Not necessarily. She seems comfortable around you. Maybe, if you tell her what you do, then she won't be as upset about what I do."
Sango sighed. She thought about it for a minute. "It's worth a try. I suppose I have some time to talk to her before my job this afternoon." She sat down in the chair behind her desk and said, "Where does she work, again?"

Sesshomaru sat in his office writing some notes for himself while looking over some papers in front of him. He sensed his mate coming near his office, and called 'come in' before she even knocked. She opened the door tentatively and, closing the door behind her, refused to look him in the eye. He watched her with intense eyes, his gaze never leaving her small frame as she walked over to his desk and sat down. Finally glancing up at him, Rin swallowed and took a deep breath before speaking.
"Sesshy, will you please not listen and not talk, just for a minute? I have something to say." Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow slightly, so Rin continued. "How long have we been trying to conceive? Nearly three years! And each time, we've, we've been unsuccessful." She suddenly looked very sad. "I can't take it anymore, Sesshomaru. I can't it's to much. You want a child just as much as I do. Sess, please, let me find a way to make it work."
Rin held her breath as she watched and waited. Sesshomaru simply looked at his mate, his piercing eyes never leaving her soft brown ones. Finally he spoke. One simple word that shattered her hope. "No."
Rin hung her head and Sesshomaru stiffened. She was crying. His mate, the love of his life, was crying. He felt his heart constrict but didn't know what to do. Rin looked up, tears shining in her eyes and whispered, "Why?"
Sesshomaru finally stood up. He walked over to his mate and pulled her into a hug, ignoring the fact that she didn't hug him back. "You know why, Rin. I just cannot trust another human with something as precious as this. We must keep trying."
Rin slowly raised her arms and wrapped them around his waist. She hugged him back, causing him to kiss the top of her head. Rin understood, but that didn't mean that she liked it one bit. She knew that Sesshomaru would not change his stubborn mind about something like this, but she also heard something that she doubted he even noticed. The pain in his voice. He was as upset about this as her, only he would not show it. He tried to mask his feelings, and he normally did a very good job of this, but Rin had begun to learn ways of knowing Sesshomaru's emotions. Sadness was a particularly difficult one, but she could hear when his voice shook, just ever so slightly. The way he swallowed thickly before he talked, and the way he lowered his voice just enough to take a soothing effect.
She sighed and whispered, "It's just so painful, Sesshy."
Sesshomaru sighed, surprisingly happy that she used that strange name again. "I know Rin. I know."
They stayed in each other's arms for a bit longer until Rin pulled away and said, "I'll let you get back to work."
Sess lowered his head slightly to capture her lips with his own. He softly moved his own against hers and gently nipped at her bottom lip. Rin opened her mouth to allow his tongue entrance, and the two of this kissed for a moment before she pulled away again. "See you when you get home." She said to him.
Sesshomaru released her and watched her walk away before returning to his desk.

Kagome walked from the kitchen to the lobby holding a large tray on one hand, and the tray stand tucked securely under her other arm. She hurriedly set the tray up when she arrived at the table, grateful to set down the heavily tray. She smiled happily at the people waiting at the booth as she set the breakfast items in front of them. They thanked her, and Kagome walked back to the kitchen, tray and stand in her hands. She set them down and was about to ask another employee if they needed any help when she heard a familiar voice call, "Excuse me, miss?"
Kagome turned around and smiled when she saw Sango sitting at the counter. She walked over to the grinning Sango and said, "Hi! What are you doing here?"
Sango shrugged. "I had a free morning and was hoping we could talk."
Kagome got a coffee mug for Sango and set it in front of her. She filled it with coffee and said, "I don't know, I'm kind of busy..."
A few seconds later her boss came up to her and muttered, "Listen Kagome, we've got enough people for the morning, do you want to take off for a few hours and come back for the lunch rush?"
Kagome gaped at her boss and slowly turned to Sango, who was looking completely innocent. "Did you have something to do with this?" She whispered to her.
Sango grinned. "I had a feeling that you would be "busy", so I may have called in. Apparently, you aren't as busy as you thought."
Kagome sighed, turned around, and thanked her boss. He walked away and she came around the other side of the counter and sat next to her. "What did you say to him?" She asked as she poured coffee for herself.
Sango shrugged. "Nothing really. To some it may have been threatening sounding, but that certainly was not my intention."
Kagome rolled her eyes but couldn't stop the smile that played on her lips. "So what did you want to talk about?"
Sango motioned for Kagome to follow her and they walked to an empty booth in the far corner of the restaurant, where no one else was around. "Inu Yasha told me you two had a date last night." She said abruptly.
Kagome sighed. She nodded and said, "Yeah, I guess you could call it that."
Sango cocked her head to the side. "You didn't have a good time, I take it?"
Kagome shifted slightly in her seat. "I... I don't know. He was very sweet and everything, but..."
"But what?" Sango persisted gently, even though she already knew.
Kagome put her chin in her hands and mumbled, "But I'm afraid of him."
Sango sighed and sat back. She watched Kagome as she sat glumly, her eyes downcast. "Kagome... do you know what it is that I do for Sesshomaru?"
Kagome shook her head and sat up straight. "Why?"
Sango tapped her chin thoughtfully for a moment, wondering how to say this without freaking her out. "Kagome, I'm... an assassin." Well, not the most delicate approach, but it had to be said somehow. Sango was thankful that no one else was around to hear their conversation.
Kagome gasped and sat back quickly. She stared wide-eyed at Sango for an entire minute before squeaking out, "What?"
Sango sighed. "That's what I do for Sesshomaru. Assassination. Inu Yasha only kills when his job absolutely calls for it. My job is to kill." So much for delicacy, Sango. She thought to herself stupidly.
Kagome watched her, shock and fear all over her face. "I... You... But..." At a loss for words, Kagome could only stare. Finally she gasped, "Why?"
Sango sat back and crossed her legs under the table. "I had to." At Kagome's look of disbelief, Sango continued. "A demon killed my parents. I worried that he would go after my little brother, so I began searching for someone who could protect him. I learned from a few shady demons that Sesshomaru was the one to go to. Well, at first, Sesshomaru wasn't interested in what I had to say. I offered to pay him to put Kohaku, my brother, somewhere safe, but he didn't want my money. So, he came up with a plan instead. He would put Kohaku somewhere safe, and far away, if I agreed to work for him." She sighed a little. "I was so desperate to protect my brother, I didn't even ask what kind of work he wanted me to do. I just jumped at the opportunity for my brother."
Kagome sat in silence before saying quietly, "I'm sorry, about your parents."
Sango shrugged slightly. "It's okay. The point is, it was my decision, and I accept that. I choose to protect my brother, and I'll do whatever Sesshomaru needs, as long as Kohaku is safe." She gave a small smile. "He's the only family I have."
Kagome was silent for a few minutes. She finally looked up at Sango. "I, I guess I can understand that. If my mother and grandfather died, I know I would do anything to take care of Souta." She shivered slightly. "But killing is... Death is... So final."
Sango nodded. "I know. But, if it's any consolation, these people are not innocents. They always did something to deserve their deaths."
Kagome nodded slowly. "Okay. But, do they... suffer?"
Sango shook her head. "No, it's cruel to torture them, in my opinion. It's quick, and relatively painless. Same as Inu Yasha." She added.
Kagome looked up quickly, her mouth open slightly. She bit her lip as she thought. "I... see."
Sango reached across and took Kagome's hands in her own. "Kagome, we are not bad people. You have to believe me."
Kagome gave a small smile. "I do. This is all just so, sudden. You know? Unexpected."
Giving a small laugh Sango said, "Oh I know exactly what you mean. One day my brother and I are going on a picnic with my parents, and then before I know it, they're dead, Kohaku is shipped off halfway around the world, and I have a new job."
Kagome sighed and shook her head, a wry smile on her lips. "Things are never going to be normal again for me, are they."
Sango laughed and patted her hand. "Don't count on it."

Inu Yasha and Miroku sat in Inu Yasha's office watching TV. They were both waiting for Sango to come back, but for different reasons. "So tell me again." Miroku said looking over at Inu Yasha. "What exactly did you hope to accomplish with Sango talking to Kagome?"
Inu Yasha sighed. "I'm hoping that Sango will convince Kagome that I'm not a bad guy." He glanced over at him. "Why are you here waiting for her?"
Miroku looked back at the TV. "Do I really need a reason?"
Inu Yasha snorted. "Man, why don't you just ask her to date you for real? We both know that's what you want."
Miroku was silent for a minute. "Because that's not what she wants." Inu Yasha glanced over at him but said nothing. "I don't know what she wants out of me, actually. Besides sex, when we're stressed." He continued.
Inu Yasha shook his head and sighed. "I still stand by it. Most guys would be thrilled to be in the position you're in."
Miroku chuckled. "I'm not like most guys."
Inu Yasha rolled his eyes. After a few seconds of silence Miroku asked, "So what did that demon outside of your door this morning want? She seemed really pissed."
Inu Yasha shrugged. "I don't know, she was bitching about some thing, but I wasn't really listening. I finally just gave her some money to shut up and she left." Miroku laughed and shook his head.

As Sango and Kagome walked down the street, looking at all the different shops and such, Kagome turned to her and said, "I guess I can accept why you do what you do. But, Inu Yasha... What's his reason?"
Sango shrugged and shook her head. "That's something that you'll have to ask him."
Kagome sighed and stopped, leaning against a tree. "I..."
Sango stopped too and looked at her. "Kagome, give him a chance."
"I did!" She exclaimed. "I went out with him, didn't I?"
Sango rolled her eyes. "Give him another chance. To prove to you that he's alright."
Kagome looked down at her shoes. "Let's talk about something else. My head hurts."
Sango smiled and tugged Kagome away from the tree. The began walking again and Kagome asked, "So what's the deal with you and Miroku?"
Sango looked at her sharply. "What? Nothing!"
Kagome laughed. "It doesn't seem like nothing."
Sango shook her head. "Honestly, it's nothing. We just use each other for sex."
Kagome's eyes widened and she blushed. "You- what?"
Sango shrugged as if it were no idea. "Sex. Not a big deal."
Kagome's mouth was open and she blushed. "It certainly is a big deal! Do you even like him?"
Sango laughed at Kagome's prudeness and said, "Kagome, I wouldn't do this with him if I didn't like him!"
Kagome raised an eyebrow. "But, in what way do you like him?"
Sango pursed her lips before saying, "I should get back to work."

Miroku and Inu Yasha both glanced up at the door when Sango walked in. She shrugged off her coat and said, "Okay, I tried my best."
"And?" Inu Yasha asked, standing up.
She sighed. "I'm not one hundred percent sure. Give her some time, and I'm sure she'll come around."
Inu Yasha glared. "I don't have time ."
She rolled her eyes and looked at Miroku. "I'm going back to my office to get some work done."
Miroku got up, said good bye to Inu Yasha, and followed Sango. "Hey." He called when he caught up with her.
She looked at him. "What?"
He smiled. "What, I can't just say hey?"
She rolled her eyes. "Sure you can."
Miroku casually tossed an arm over her shoulder. "Plans tonight?"
She shrugged it off. "I have work tonight."
"What about after work?" He asked, frowning when she removed his arm.
Sango sighed and pressed the elevator button. "I don't know. Don't you have work to do?"
He sighed and nodded. "Yes, I suppose I do." The two of them waited for the elevator to arrive, and when it did they each pressed the appropriate button. Alone in the elevator, Miroku turned to Sango and prepared to seduce her, but Sango help up and hand and said, "Don't even think about it."
Miroku sighed again. Moments later the elevator 'dinged' at his floor and the doors opened. He turned to her and kissed her neck softly before walking out of the elevator and down to his office without a backwards glance. Sango took a deep breath. He was really evoking some different feelings in her. Could it be that she actually... liked him? She shook her head quickly. No. Of course not. Touching her neck gently she sighed and closed her eyes. Then what was it that she was feeling?

At the end of a very long day, Kagome wrapped her coat around herself and stepped out of the restaurant. She waved to one of her coworkers as they drove away and walked to the bus stop. She took the quick bus ride home and smiled in relief when her apartment came into view. Kagome climbed the steps to her door and unlocked it, letting herself in. As soon as she shut and locked the door behind her, her phone rang. She jumped slightly, but then shook her head. "Hello?" She asked, picking up the phone.
"Hey Kagome, it's Inu Yasha."
Kagome's eyes widened slightly and she mumbled, "Uh, hi."
He chuckled. "How are you?"
"I'm okay. I talked to Sango today."
"Oh?" He replied, feigning surprise.
"Yeah. We had a nice talk." She looked down at her shoes and took a deep breath.
"Well that's good." He sat down in a chair and sighed. "Listen, Kagome, I'd like to get together again." Kagome twisted her hair in her fingers but said nothing, so he continued. "I know that you're still scared and everything, but we should talk some more."
Finally Kagome replied, "I... Okay."

Okay."
