Chapter Eighteen

Three Become One:

Part Two

 

*Inside Leiko*

 

Yamainu was surrounded by a thick fog. He moved forward slowly, not sure where to go. As he walked forward, he caught sight of something in the fog. When he looked closer, the wolf youkai saw Leiko as a child. She was no more than seven and she was standing in front of Kouga. As the full scene played out, Yamainu felt his heart begin to pound. He was seeing into Leiko's soul. The wolf youkai took a step back.

As he backed away from the scene, another began to play out. Leiko lay on the ground in the clearing where he had found her earlier. Tenma leapt onto her back and Leiko was pinned down.

"So good to see you,too, my dear." the witch said.

"She...lied to me..." Yamainu said softly as the scene played out.

"Your sister will die before you can retrieve the Four Souls. If you had not been so selfish and had wished your sister to be well once more, none of this would have come to pass." Tenma whispered

Yamainu clenched his fists and ran at the fading image of Tenma. When he went to grab her, the wolf youkai slammed into the ground. He rose to his feet and turned back to watch the image of him and Leiko fade as they went to rejoin the others.

"Now, it's time for you to give up, my lovely lady." came Satourou's voice through the fog.

"Bullshit!" Leiko shouted. "I'll die before I give the Jewel to you."

Satourou laughed evilly. "Have it your way then, my lady."

Yamainu growled lowly. He charged through the fog and slammed into the dark silhouette that was Satourou. The falcon youkai flew through the air and landed with a thud some ways off. Yamainu glared in the direction that Satourou had gone.

"She's my woman, you piece of chicken shit!" Yamainu growled.

Leiko rose to her feet, shaking as she did so. The wolf youkai caught her before she fell and held her close to him. She looked up into his brown eyes, relieved to see him there.

"Yamainu..." she said, but her voice trailed off as he put his finger to her lips.

"Shh...You're way too weak to do anything." he said and took her into his arms.

An evil laugh pierced the silence that hung in the air. Satourou limped into view and stood grinning at the two of them. Yamainu glared at him.

"It seems that you have every intention of fighting me to the death for this girl's soul and body's freedom." Satourou said.

"I'd die for her." Yamainu said in a low growl.

Satourou smiled slightly. "Then I'll leave this weakened body. There's nothing she can do now that she has had three souls in her. Her body will be weak for a good while so I'm safe." he said. "I hope me meet soon, my lady. You have proven to be a worthy opponet wolf."

With that, the falcon youkai faded into the mist and was gone. Leiko looked up at the wolf youkai. He lay her on the ground once more and bent to kiss her. As their lips met, Yamainu felt himself being pulled away from her. He didn't know how, but somehow he knew that his soul was leaving her body since Satourou was gone.

 

*Back with the others*

 

Yamainu's eyes shot open and he gasped. He shot up, looking frantically over at the hanyou. Her body lay face-down on the ground, not too far from him. Satourou was sitting against the remains of the hut that his body had collaped by. The two looked at one another for a long moment. Leiko moaned and rolled over.

"Leiko..." Yamainu breathed and rose to his feet.

His body was slightly weakened but that was nothing to him. When he was at her side, Leiko opened her eyes. She smiled slightly and puckered her lips in an imaginary kiss. Yamainu smiled back. She knew what had happened. He lifted her limp body into his arms. Satourou had told him that she would be weak and it seemed that he'd been right.

"She can't capture him." Satzuka said.

Kari looked at the young priestess. "How do you know?"

"Looking at her gives it away." Sasuke replied.

"The extra souls inside her inexperienced body has taken its toll on her." Satzuka said.

Keiyo let out a hopeless moan. "So it's going to get away?" she asked.

"If he wants to." Shadow replied.

Garou snorted. "Well, we all know the answer to that one."

Satourou rose shakily to his feet. He stretched his wings and with a slight smile at the group before him.
