Chapter Thirty-One
Tenma's Joy
Leiko opened her eyes and found Yamainu sitting by the remains of her fire. His jacket was on top of her to fight off whatever cold might have touched her body in his absence. A tiny smile touched his face and he rose to his feet. He knelt beside her, running his fingers through her silver locks.
"Good morning." he whispered.
" 'Morning." Leiko said stretching.
Leiko rose to a sitting position and groaned. She was so sore. Very slowly, the hanyou rose to her feet and walked to the river. The water was cold but it washed off the blood and helped ease some of the soreness. When she felt that she was clean enough, Leiko returned to Yamainu. He helped her into her clothes, kissing her every chance he got.
"We have to get back to the others." she said.
Yamainu poked out his lower lip in a mock pout. "Sad face?" he said.
"No, that won't work. It is cute, but no." Leiko said, smiling despite herself.
The wolf youkai shrugged. "I tried." he said.
Leiko tied Yakeima to her side and started to walk in the direction of the village. Yamainu walked a few paces behind her. His eyes caught sight of the claw marks he'd left her on her back. The others would see them. He shrugged in indifference. The walk was quiet.
When they entered the village, it was completely deserted. Leiko stood staring at the huts. Yamainu just stood there. People had been there when he'd left the night before. How could a whole village of peolpe disappear?
"Leiko! Yamainu!" Keiyo called.
The little cougar demon, atop Garou ran towards them. The rest of the group wasn't too far behind. Garou must have smelled them. She waved at them and smiled. When they stopped in front of her, Leiko expected Garou to attack her with welcoming wolf kisses. They all looked at her in silence.
"What is it?" she asked.
"We don't know." Kari said.
"All the villagers were gone when we woke this morning." Sasuke explained.
Satzuka nodded. "They were here last night. Then they just vanished."
"It's just too wierd." Shadow said and snorted in disgust. "They could have warned us."
Garou growled at the other wolf. "Something scared them, you fool."
Before Leiko could speak again, an evil laugh filled her ears. She whirled towards the source. On top of one of the huts, Tenma stood with her hands on her hips. Leiko growled lowly in her throat. Her sister's murderer had finally come out of hiding.
"Tenma." she growled.
"Hello, my pet." the priestess laughed. "Miss me?"
"The only thing I missed was the chance to kill you."
Tenma clicked her tongue. "That's not very nice." she said. "Did it hurt you when you finally realised that you had no chance of saving your sister?"
Rage was building inside of Leiko. It was bubbling up inside of her like lava in a volcano. She knew that when it exploded, there would be no stopping her. Tenma smiled down at her. The evil priestess raised her hand in the air and muttered a few words under her breath. Behind her, Leiko heard the sound of bodies hitting the ground. She whirled to see her friends struggling with invisible binds. Leiko turned back to Tenma.
"Can't have them getting in the way of my fun, now can I?" Tenma asked.
Leiko ground her teeth. "It ends now, Tenma!" she growled.
From around her body, a deep blue aura began to cloud around her. Tenma stared down at the hanyou in fear. Why did she fear this pathetic creature now? When Leiko looked up at her, Tenma went rigid with fear.
