Author's Note: I'm writing this in dedication to my dear editor who does loads of shit for me and puts up with my Fullmetal Alchemist obsession every day of the week. I love her, and well, this is for you.
The silver haired hanyou looked down at the raven haired girl. His amber eyes watched closely at the forests surrounding the girl. His white dog ears twitched before he leaped up higher in the branches of the trees. He sniffed the air with his keen demon dog nose. He relaxed when he saw nothing was wrong. The tree held him up as he leaned against the trunk. His eyes closed, exhausted from the day. A sigh passed his lips before he fell into a light slumber.
It didn't last long. The girl awoke as the beginning hours of the morning crept by and stood up. After her brown eyes scanned the ground she looked up. Inuyasha's bright red haori caught her eye. A smile lit her face as she called up to him.
“Inuyasha!” she yelled. The hanyou awoke from his light sleep and looked down at her. A relief passed over him seeing that nothing had happened during the night. He jumped down from the tree and stood before her. She looked up as the sun finally breached the trees. He watched her intently for a moment before looking away.
“Is there something wrong?” she questioned trying to catch his eye again. He shook his head as a response and started walking without a look back. Kagome followed after him as they made their way through the wild forest.
Silence fell between the two for what seemed like hours. Inuyasha finally broke the quiet barrier between the two.
“Kagome, what are you going to do when we complete the Jewel Shard?” He had been meaning to ask her the question for a while now. He was almost scared to ask her. Scared of what her answer would be.
She didn't answer right away. Kagome found herself asking herself this question now and then. She herself didn't know what was going to happen. Sango and Miroku had already taken their own paths. It left her and Inuyasha alone to finish the little pink jewel that so many demons pursued. Finally, after considering for a few moments, she answered rather slowly.
“I'm not sure yet. I think I'll just go back and lead a normal life again. There won't be too much for me to do here. Besides, it's way too dangerous. I guess you can visit me Inuyasha. Why?” She looked up at him with a questioning look.
“Oh,” he answered, a hint of sadness escaping in his voice. “No reason, I just wanted to know since we never really talked about it.”
Over time, the two had grown fond of each other. But, neither knew just how fond the other really was. Inuyasha found it hard to be away from the girl. He found himself happier around her. He worried when she was alone, or when a demon neared. He wouldn't admit it, but it was like he loved her. He began to care less and less about Kikyo and more about Kagome. When he thought about spending his life with the dead priestess, it didn't please him as much as it used to. Now when he thought about the rest of his life, he thought about the raven haired girl beside him. Her cheery laughter, her bright eyes, innocent smile. He wanted to be near them forever.
Inuyasha wasn't the only one. Kagome had similar thoughts about the hanyou. She hated going home for periods of time and leaving him in Feudal Japan. She didn't like being away from him anymore then he liked being away from her. She sometimes thought about her mother's constant chatter about her and marriage. She would often imagine herself and the silver haired hanyou standing at the alter. She didn't care that he was only half human. Her heart was telling her one clear message: she loved him. But, it only caused her great pain and sadness. There was someone else there that would never leave the half-demon's thoughts. The woman she was a reincarnation of… Kikyo. She and Inuyasha were past lovers and Kagome could never keep this thought from creeping into her mind. She was sure that because of her, Inuyasha would never feel the same. It upset her more then ever that his heart belonged to another. Of course, Kagome never knew the hanyou's real feelings.
The silence again returned between the two. The day flashed by and again the sun set. Kagome had curled up, her head on her bag, and fallen asleep. Inuyasha was watching from his usual position in a tree. He stared at her, her answer to his question filling his mind. He sighed and jumped down. Carefully, he walked over to her and applied a little pressure on her shoulder. Her eyes fluttered open and looked at him. She sat up and stretched her arms upward, yawning. Inuyasha waited patiently for the Miko to fully awaken before he spoke.
“What's going on Inuyasha?” She finally asked looking at him with wide, tired eyes. At once he was sorry he had woken her and almost told her to go back to sleep, but another question was nagging at his mind.
“Kagome,” he started staring at her, “do you hate me because I'm a hanyou and not human?”
She seemed surprised by the question and blinked her eyes a few times. Quickly, she shook her head.
“No. I like you just the way you are. It's not your fault you're a hanyou. I don't think there's anything wrong with you.” A weight was lifted from his heart as he heard her reply. Her answer also let him know it was finally time. He took her hand and helped her up. He didn't let go of her hand, but instead, started leading her through the forest.
“Inuyasha, where-“
“You'll see in a second,” he cut in as she started to ask. Understanding, Kagome said no more and let him lead her through the thick wilderness. After a short few minutes, he brought her to a small clearing in the forest. The moon shone down brightly as they stepped out of the trees. He finally let go of her hand and turned around to look at her. Her eyes were filled with confusion as his look softened.
He took a deep breathe as he prepared himself. He reached down and gently cupped her chin, her warm skin sending tingles through his body. He expected her to move away, but she only stood there. He leaned down slowly, his eyes closing. She closed her own and leaned up a little. They met half way in a kiss. It was full of tender, sweet, passion, as Inuyasha had hoped. She didn't pull away, or make any sign that she was uncomfortable. He moved away, not wanting to startle her if he deepened the kiss. She opened her eyes and looked at him. Her cheeks had gone a light salmon, and it only deepened when their eyes met.
“Kagome, there's something I've wanted to tell you for a while, but I haven't been able to say.” She nodded, her heart filling with hope at what was to come. “I love you.” He spoke the three words quietly, but loud enough for the Miko to hear. She smiled a great happiness coming over her. He looked down, but was pulled into another kiss by Kagome. He nibbled at her bottom lip for entrance and she gave no protest. The moon shone down lighting their worlds as their tongues battled for dominance. After a short time, Inuyasha's ears perked as a twig snapped. He pulled away and looked to the forest.
A dark figure approached them and stepped forward out of the shadows. Her cold eyes met Inuyasha's. Her face was full of rage as her eyes moved to Kagome. Kikyo had her bow raised with an arrow tightly notched in. Inuyasha growled and stood in front of Kagome.
“What are you doing here Kikyo?” he asked coldly.
“The question is Inuyasha, what are you doing here? And, with your lips on her?” she moved her arrow to the side as if to point at Kagome. She shrunk back behind Inuyasha knowing that she had become Kikyo's target. Inuyasha's hand gripped the blade of Tetsusaiga. Kikyo let out a cold laugh as she noticed his hand over his father's blade.
“Do you intend to kill me?”
“You dare lay a hand on Kagome and I will.”
Kikyo let out another laugh and took a step forward as if to challenge him. “That imposter has no business here. She's just trying to replace me. Don't you love me anymore Inuyasha?”
“You wish I did. All you ever did was play around with my heart and told me lies. I don't love you. My heart is to Kagome now!” At his final words he had pulled out the large fang and leaped forward at Kikyo.
“In that case,” she dodged this attack by jumping to the side. As she did this, her hand let go of the bow and the arrow she had aimed so carefully flew forward at the now vulnerable Kagome. There was no time to move as the arrowhead pierced her tender skin into her heart. No scream came from her lips as she fell backwards. Inuyasha hurried forward and caught her.
“Kagome… Kagome!” he yelled clutching her body. He collapsed on the ground with her in his arms. He tilted his head forward and tears started to fall down his cheeks. They slowly crashed down on her shirt. Inuyasha felt as the dying Miko took her last few painful breathes. Her head fell to the side and her last bit of air escaped through her lips. Inuyasha's cheeks were glistening with wet, salty tears by now. Gently, he laid her on the forest floor.
He stood up clutching Tetsusaiga. He looked up at Kikyo. The priestess gave a small gasp as the once half demon revealed burning red eyes. His claws grew out in sharp points and each of his cheeks were marked with two streaks. Anger was gripping at his body, turning him into a full demon. He was losing control as Kagome's death took toll on his body. He gripped the fang and once again leaped forward. Kikyo had pulled out another arrow and let it fly. Inuyasha slashed it in half before coming down upon Kikyo.
“I warned you,” he hissed. The woman's eyes filled with fear as Inuyasha slashed down once more. He pulled the sword to the ground ripping through her already lifeless body. The figure that had once stood before him disappeared. It was over. The woman he had loved so long ago was finally dead, never to come back again.
Inuyasha's claws grew small again. His amber eyes returned and the marks disappeared. He dropped Tetsusaiga and ran over to Kagome's side. The girl had grown colder as Inuyasha pulled her into his arms again. He silently cried over her. He was alone in the world with no one to love. The one person who had ever loved, and accepted him as a hanyou was now lying dead before him. It was all his fault. He could have stopped the arrow, but it was already too late.
As Inuyasha mourned over the loss of Kagome, something was happening. Where Kikyo once was, a white ball of light had appeared. It floated in the air above Kagome and slowly it began to make its way toward her. Inuyasha moved back frightened by the little ball. He didn't dare touch it in fear of it being a demon. He instead inched closer to his sword preparing to slash out at the thing.
The light finally found its way to Kagome. It stopped its descent above her body. After what seemed like forever to Inuyasha, it flew forward into her chest.
“Kagome!” he yelled thinking some kind of demon had flown into her, about to possess her body. Instead, her body lifted a few inches above the ground. She fell back to the earth only seconds later. Inuyasha ran forward standing over the woman he loved. At first she made no movement, but after a few seconds, she took a deep intake of breath. Inuyasha gasped and kneeled down at her side. Her eyes flew open and a small smile came across her face. The arrow disappeared along with the blood that had stained her shirt. The wound was also gone where the arrow had pierced her body.
“Inuyasha?” she asked in a soft voice.
“Yes, I'm here Kagome!” He grabbed her hand and held it in his. The tears still stained his face as he looked at her. She reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck. He slowly stood up bringing her with him. He helped her steady herself. She leaned against him, her head on his chest.
“I love you so much Inuyasha,” Kagome said quietly. He kissed the top of her head. She looked up and he pulled her into another kiss. She put her hand up and wiped away his tear streaked cheeks. He found his hand moving forward to hold her chin. They stayed that way until they had to part and take a breath. Kagome looked up at the stars, her hand intertwined with Inuyasha's.
“I love you and I always will, no matter if you're a half demon or not.” Kagome's words filled the two with joy. Although they didn't know what the future had in store, they knew they would always be with each other.
