All standard disclaimers apply. I don't Inuyasha or Black or Pearl Jam…….although if I did I probably wouldn't owe the government my arms and legs to repay student loans. This is my first attempt at writing a fanfiction and it will be a Kagome/Kouga. I copied the lyrics to Black from lukin.com and they should receive credit for printing them, not me.

The Light in a Darkened Heart

Chapter One: Severing Ties

Kouga was sitting quietly on the side of a hill listening to the sounds of the approaching evening. There was a quiet stillness in the air that was becoming a rarity in the increasingly dangerous Sengoku Jidai. In his mind, Kouga was replaying his last encounter with Kagome over and over again. He thought back to their conversation and felt a deep sadness overtake him again.
Flashback:
A cloud of dust whirled around Kouga as he stopped in front of Kagome and her friends and grabbed her hands. "My love", he exclaimed. Kagome blushed prettily and shyly asked him how he and his pack were faring. Inuyasha began to growl low in his throat at Kagome attentiveness to the wolf.
"Get your hands off her!!!" he bit out. Kagome sighed. She couldn't stand to see them fight every time they crossed paths. Kouga did not deserve to give so much devotion and receive so little in return.

"Kouga, come with me, we should talk…..alone." Inuyasha immediately began to follow anyway but as Kagome and Kouga walked away she tossed a casual "Osuwari" over her shoulder and the hanyou dropped to the ground with a loud oomph. "Bitch", Inuyasha muttered under his breath. Kagome stopped in the middle of a small copse of trees and turned to face Kouga. Her face was haloed by the light filtering in from amongst the leaves on the tall trees surrounding them. She gently reached up and touched his cheek. He could see the pain and torment inside her mirrored on her lovely face.

"You are my friend….one of the best ones I have. I know you love me but right now my heart isn't mine to give. I can't help myself…I know
he doesn't love me back but God help me, I love him anyway. I feel deep down inside, Inuyasha can't even love Kikyo; he is only just beginning to love
himself." She sighed deeply and turned away. "However, I will wait till the bitter end and bear witness to his choice. That is the only way I will be able
to live with myself. At least then I will know that I never missed an opportunity to be loved the way I love him. I can't ask you to wait for me though, Kouga, I want you to be happy and to love and be loved in return. Please…..forget about me."
Kouga could feel a massive lump in his throat. He felt as though all the air had been sucked from his lungs. At that moment all he could think about was relieving the pressure in his chest. He turned from Kagome and ran. Kagome stood and watched him run away blindly and she whispered; "Now you are free to love and receive a whole heart in return, not a half a heart tainted with jealousy and pain." She closed her eyes for a moment and then slowly walked back the way she'd come.
End Flashback

I will write more as I go along and I promise that
future chapters will be much longer. I am just testing the waters for this
chapter. Please review!!!
