Chapter 4

Conflicting Thoughts

Sango yawned. It was eight in the morning, and she would have liked to snuggle back down onto the pillow (I'm sure a lot of you would have experienced this) but she still had her day time job as a sales assistant at the shopping centre. Her job ended at six, while work at the cafe started at ten, which would allow her an approximate four hours at the hospital to visit.

Making her way to the bathroom, she crossed Ayame's empty bed. It was not anything to be alarmed about, her friend attended high school nearby. Thinking of school caused a pang in her heart. Sango was not a nerd, she just enjoyed learning new concepts. A previous IQ test also revealed that she had an IQ of 180, meaning that she was really smart, but given her financial status, she was not able to handle both school fees and Kohaku's bills. She put the feeling of envy aside, she had long accepted it. As long as her brother was fine, she could sacrifice anything.

Stepping out of the shower, she changed into her work clothes, a neatly pressed black button-down shirt and skirt. She looked Ayame's cluttered dresser, filled with cosmetics. Sango was not one to care about her looks, not much anyway. Even though she worked at the cosmetics counter, she felt that making her face up like a clown just was not for her. Putting just a dash of pink eyeliner to look presentable, she grabbed her bag, slipping into a pair of plain black court shoes and stepped out of the house.

A few hours later

She sighed. Just a few more minutes to the end of her shift. The day had been uneventful, just tending to a few customers. The most recent one was a plump woman with a boy. She thought he looked sweet at a first glance but looks proved to be deceiving. He whined and bawled when his mother told him to wait at the side while she browsed at the cosmetics. The woman told- no, demanded that Sango helped her try on all the different makeup. She complained, that everything was unsuitable to her, that the service was terrible and when her son bawled, she fussed over him and walked away without a word. That was one of the reason why Sango detested people like them- rich, spoiled and full of themselves.

The clock on the wall showed six. Finally, she could leave. She did not enjoy her job here, the conceitedness of the customers were suffocating. But the pay was good, so she stayed. Sango was about to head off when a group of youths came over. Her colleague who was supposed to take over was not here yet, so she had to attend to them. As they came closer, she saw them as the same group as last night, with the boy that Ayame had her eyes on.

"Ooh look! Isn't that eyeshadow colour awesome?" The girl pointed at a pale violet eyeshadow, while the other boy with long silver hair just scoffed and looked away, almost as if wishing he was somewhere else. Odd, Sango had never seen anyone with such a curious hair colour before. Perhaps he dyed it, anyway it is not my business, she thought. The black haired boy nodded at the girl's question, although he did look bored. The girl, oblivious, continued looking at the other shades. Sango exhaled, what luck she had today. She went up to the group, and asked, "May I help you?" The girl flashed a bright smile and asked her to help try on the makeup. Sango nodded and set to work. Kohaku would have to wait a little more today, she thought. While Sango was applying the makeup on the girl, the shorter boy spoke up.

"Pretty lady, would you go out with me?" Sango was stunned. Could anyone be more straightfoward than that? She rolled her eyes, and resumed what she was doing. How could Ayame be attracted to a casanova like him was beyond her. The girl laughed, while the other guy muttered, "Bouzo..." "Sorry about Miroku, he's always acting like that, thanks for doing such a good job!" "Yeah, no problem." Sango answered.

"My name's Kagome, this is Miroku, and that's Inuyasha sulking in the corner." She pointed at the silver haired boy who just glared at her. Miroku nodded smiling. "Sango, nice to meet you." For some reason, the girl did not seem so bad after all, she even kind of reminded Sango of Ayame. The same cheerful smiles and bubbly personality. She shrugged it off, rich people were all the same, fake as plastic. "So I'll take this, this and this!" Kagome grinned, and wordlessly Sango packed it up. By this time, her colleague had arrived, so she took the opportunity to get away, without even a word goodbye, leaving the three puzzled. She knew she was being rude, but she felt that she just had to leave. For some reason that she could not fathom, the voice in her subconsciousness told her that she was just afraid to admit that perhaps she may be wrong about them.

At the hospital

The nurse had just told her that Kohaku did not meet with any complications today, and Sango felt relieved. Talking to Kohaku really helped to soothe her, seeing him well took her mind off her troubles. Kikyo told her before that talking to coma patients may help to improve their condition. After about two hours, she decided she should drop by that stranger. After all, Kikyo mentioned that no one had been by to visit him.

Stepping into the ward, her breath caught in her throat as her eyes took in his fine form. Even unconscious and pale, he looked almost glowing with life, she could almost feel his spirit filling the room, bathing her in its warm embrace.

"Hello, I am Sango, I saved you. I kinda wished I knew your name, it would make this so much easier. So I probably should introduce myself huh? Well, I am seventeen this year, I have a brother, Kohaku right here in this same hospital. Strange, both of you are in this state because of a car accident. Perhaps the two of you share a similar fate. I really would like to know more about you, I mean, something about you really intrigued me." Sango paused. Perhaps it would not be such a good idea revealing so much. He could be a psycho for all she knew, but in her heart she knew he was anything but that. She could almost trust him with her heart, but her stubborn mind refused to acknowledge the attraction. Perhaps when he woke up he would turn away in disgust from her. Sango's mind was in turmoil. She did not know what to do- she wanted to run away, she wanted to stay, and a part of her almost wanted to feel what those lips tasted like. She felt horrified at herself, it was totally unlike her to act like this, so caught up and confused over someone from the opposite sex.

Sango's heart told her to stay. And so she did. Taking a deep breathe, she continued, like nothing had happened, though her heart was beating fast. "Now where were we? How about I tell you about my day? ...."

She was probably away from guys too long, Sango assured herself. She was just here to visit, to be a friend to another lonely soul. When he awoke she would leave, never crossing paths again.
