Chapter 5
Inuysha was stunned; his knee's threatening to turn to mush. The questions kept buzzing around in his head. He walked closer to the painting, running a clawed finger gently down the figure of the woman in the painting. Feeling Kagome slip her arms around his waist, he calmed enough to ask a simple, “How?”
Grandmother said sympathetically, “Not all demons were against the union between your father and mother.” Wrinkling her nose in disgust she continued, “Most but not all.” The spell on the house was meant to keep you both safe. We tried to get her to stay, but she always returned to her village.”
Grandfather took up the story. “When the news of your mother's death reached us, I left immediately for your village knowing the villagers would not be kind.” Grandfather hung his head as he softly said, “I was ambushed and did not make it in time. When I arrived you had already fled. We tried to find you but you were always one step ahead of us. We could only hope that you remembered this place.”
“We lost all track of you for years. We could no longer sense you at all.” Grandmother shook her head confusion in her eyes.
Grandfather put his arm around Grandmother's shoulders. “Then suddenly the sense of you was back, but you were angry. We thought it best to leave you alone until the anger abated. Months passed, the anger in you turned to contentment. We had hope that you had finally found happiness. So many more months pass and here you are with your mate to be.”
Grandmother smiled and took Inuyasha's hand in her own. “We want you to feel that this is much your home as it is Ryu's. You will always be welcome here. It will be a safe place for you, Kagome and any pups you may have. We know we cannot replace what you have lost, but we would be honored if you would consider us your Grandparents too.”
Inuyasha didn't know what to think. He was being asked to be a part of a family. His eyes found Ryu's silently asking her permission.
Ryu nodded a soft smile on her face. “I've always wanted a big brother.”
Inuyasha gulped, stepping forward; he took Grandmother in his arms and whispered into her shoulder, “Thank you.' Feeling Grandfathers hand on his shoulder and hearing a gruff voice softly say. “Welcome home, pup.”
Releasing Grandmother, Inuyasha stepped back reaching for Kagome's hand. He felt shaken and needed time with Kagome to compose himself.
Grandfather said “I will return shortly to escort you to our home. Please relax. The ceremony will be soon.”
As the Grandparents left, Inuyasha sat down on a cushion pulling Kagome onto his lap; burying his face in her hair.
Sango motioned Ryu and Kurama over to her and Miroku, saying quietly “He needs time to compose himself.”
Miroku nodded adding, “He'll be feeling vulnerable and he will not be himself until he can shake that feeling.”
Ryu and Kurama sat down beside the couple. Ryu leaned her head against Kurama's shoulder. “I hope he'll be ok.” All Kurama could do was pull her close and wait.
Kagome stroked Inuyasha's hair saying nothing but just being there for him.
He finally lifted his head and kissed her. His eyes held a dazed expression but he was smiling. “Can you believe that?”
“I can believe it.” She hugged him close and said, “I think everyone is worried about you.”
He straightened and looked over his shoulder. Seeing his friends looking so worried had him turning to completely face them. “Hey, I'm ok. It was just kind of a shock.” Looking at Ryu he asked “Were you serious?”
Smiling she nodded. “Oh yea. I'm an only child. I've always wanted a brother or sister. Now I have an older brother and don't think I won't play up the little sister bit.”
He gave her a mock glare, “And don't think I won't be the high handed older brother.”
Miroku asked, “How does it feel to be without family and in a short amount of time gain a mate, a sister and Grandparents?”
Before Inuyasha could answer, Kurama spoke up. “Don't forget about me, you also have a brother-in-law.”
Inuyasha shook his head and finally answered. “Overwhelming.”
Interrupting everyone's thoughts a voice boomed, “Boys, gather everything you need its time to go!”
Solemnly the boys got up and grabbed their gear. Turning to Ryu, Kurama whispered “I'll see you at the ceremony.”
Kagome put her arms around Inuyasha saying “I'll see you later.” Inuyasha pulled her close whispering in her ear, “I can't wait.”
Miroku stroked Sango's cheek. She put her hands to his hair, fingering his hair tie. “Leave it down tonight.” Eye's widening slightly Miroku agreed.
With that the boys left.
The girls looked at each other, panic starting to set in. What should they do now? Grandmother walked in, noticing the wild eyed looks, took over smoothly. “Go to the hot springs, relax. I'll take care of everything.”
Looking around the room, Grandmother nodded decisively. Watching as the girls left, she put away the cushions. Settling her shoulders, she closed her eyes, lifted her arms and let her fox magic flow.
In the hot springs, clumsy fingers dropped soap and shampoo bottles. Finally Kagome gave a growl, “We have to stop acting like this. We're acting like we're being forced to do something we don't want to do.”
Ryu laughed at Kagome's outraged expression. “You're right. What are we so worried about?”
Sango said softly, “I think we're finally realizing the enormity of the step we're taking. That's all.”
Looking thoughtfully at each other, they began to grin and finally with giggles they
hurried through their bath.
Grandmother looked around pleased with her handiwork. She would wait until the girls were getting dressed to finish.
Walking into the room just then, the girls caught sight of flowers before Grandmother shooed them into the Ryu's bedroom.
“I want you girls to get ready and stay in here until I come and get you for the ceremony.” With that Grandmother left them alone.
“Wow, did you see the flowers?' Songo asked
Kagome nodded. “I wonder where she got them?”
“It's fox magic.” Ryu answered matter of factly. Noticing she was being stared at, she went on, “didn't you say you traveled with a young fox?” At their nod, she continued, “When he uses his magic doesn't he use things from nature?”
Kagome thought she understood. “Fox magic uses nature to its advantage?”
Ryu nodded. “We manipulate it to suit our purposes. It sounds harmless, but it can be used as a great weapon. When people see Kurama, all they see is long red hair and a gentle smile. In battle that gentleness disarms an enemy.”
Sango said thoughtfully, “It's hard to imagine him in battle. Does he have a sword?”
“No. He has a variety of attacks, but the one he relies on the most is called the Rose Whip.”
“How does that work?” Kagome asked
“It's a whip that looks like them stem of a rose, thorns and all. Only a lot stronger and deadlier.”
Both girls looked at Ryu, confusion in their eyes.
“Ah hell. I'm not explaining this right. Maybe after the ceremony I can get him to show you.”
While talking they had been brushing their hair. Now it lay gleaming down their backs. Now it was time to get dressed.
They had chosen dresses that were alike except for color. Now they pulled them out of the closet.
The dresses were deceptively simple. Lace up bodice, low scoop neck.
Dressing, they began to laugh at each other. “Here Ryu let me tie that for you.” Kagome said slapping her hands away. Ryu grouched, “I hate dresses.”
They turned to Sango, noticing her deep blush. “I've never wore anything so reviling before.”
Ryu put her arm around the girl's shoulders, “You look great.”
“I hope that Monk can keep his hands to himself until after the ceremony.” Kagome said with a smile.
Looking each other over, they nodded in approval. Sango's dress was a pale rose, Kagome's a deep green, and Ryu had on violet. They had picked the colors for specific reasons. Sango thought the rose color would look good against the black of the monk's robes.
Ryu sounding worried said, “It will be ok if Kurama wears black.”
There was a soft knock on the door and Grandmother walked in.
She looked them over and giving a nod said, “You look beautiful.”
She pulled a small black box out of her pocket. She handed each girl a gold ring. “When Grandfather tells you to, you will put this on your mate's hand.”
Ryu turned away, digging into a box she pulled out three gold chains. Handing them to her friends she said “Put these on.”
The chain rested just above the swell of their breasts just peaking out above the bodice of the dress.
“Are you ready?” Grandmother asked noticing the bare feet beneath the skirt swirling around their ankles.
“Yes Ma'am,” came the chorus.

The girls followed Grandmother into the main room that was now lit by dozens of candles. Flowers were on every available surface. Grandfather stood in front of a large wall hanging with only one thing on it, the kanji symbol for love.
Grandmother led the girls over to where the boys were standing. Smiling each boy took his girls hand and walked with them to where Grandfather stood.
Grandfather started in his most solemn voice. “Do you Kurama, from time after our time take Keiko to be your mate?”
“Yes.”
“Do you Keiko, from time after our time take Kurama to be your mate?
“Yes.”
“Do you Inuyasha, leader of the pack take Kagome to be your mate?”
“Yes.”
“Do you Kagome, from time after our time take Inuyasha to be your mate?”
“Yes.”
“Do you Miroku, member of the Inuyasha pack take Sango to be your mate?”
“Yes.”
“Do you Sango, member of the Inuyasha pack take Miroku to be your mate?”
“Yes.”
“Please take the rings you are holding and place them on the third finger of the left hand. This is a symbol of eternal love.” Waiting a moment until that was done he said “Please hold each others wrists.” Walking among them he tied their left hands together with a gold rope. “As the rope binds your hands together, may it bind your heart and souls together.” Passing his hands over each couple the rope began to glow. Then reciting what Kurama had taught him he said “You may now kiss your mate.”
Following the solemn kiss the couples shared, Grandmother used her fox magic to sprinkle flower petals over them.
After hugging everyone and offering congratulations, Grandfather put his arm around Grandmother and said goodbye.
Kurama went to where he had Ryu's portable CD player set up and turned it on. Soft music filled the room. He bowed to Ryu and said, “May I have this dance?”
Smiling she allowed him to pull her into his arms. Putting her arms around his neck, she threaded her fingers into his hair. They began to sway to the music.
Kagome, grinning held out her hand to Inuyasha As he blushed she said, “It's easy, just follow my lead.”
Inuyasha put his arms around her waist. He groaned as he felt her hands in his hair and her body sway against his.
Miroku pulled Sango up with him saying “It doesn't look that hard.” He groaned as he felt her against him. He felt Sango playing in his hair. “Why did you want me to keep it down?”
Sango smiled, blushed and said “I've always had a fascination with your hair, Monk.”
No one wanted to break up the party just yet, but each could feel the anticipation hum along their veins.
