Chapter 4: At Peace Once More

"Ok, here we are. What now? He could have called from Cancun for all we know." Sango was sitting on the park bench and when Kagome brought up this point she began to rock back and forth feeling very noxious.

"Do you hear that?" Sango looked up from the spot on the ground where she was staring.

"Hear what?" Kagome stated almost silently.

"Sirens." Kagome looked dazed and followed the sound of the sirens. The two girls ran as fast as they could.

"Oh my god. That is my apartment building." Sango said gazing up at the third floor window, where her living room sat, and she saw a police line around the door.

"I have to get in there, excuse me, that is my apartment. Please." Sango said pleading at the cops.

"I am sorry ma'am. What apartment?" The police officer was very kind, and tipped his hat when he spoke.

"Three F." Sango declared, praying to god it wasn't her apartment. The cop stared at her for a moment, before saying calmly,

"I am sorry ma'am, you can't go up there. That is the apartment under investigation." Sango's hand went up to her mouth and she gasped inside her hand.

"What happened? You can at least tell me that can't you."

"Well, ma'am. A man name Kouga Patterson, was found dead; looks like a suicide." the cop took his hat off and sighed deeply as he looked down at the ground.

Kagome crashed to the ground. She began to weep, yet no tears were falling down; perhaps, she had already cried to much. Sango leaned down beside her and put her arm around her, Sango had no problem crying however.

"Kouga? Why Kouga?" Kagome whispered these words as though they were the only words she knew, she was rocking back and forth, repeating these words. She buried her face into Sango's chest, she finally allowed the tears to flow.

"Excuse me, sir," Sango spoke up, "How do you know it was suicide?"

"Well ma'am to be honest, the only clue was the murder weapon in his hand. A little knife, with the word Cancun printed on it." The police officer walked away and began talking solemnly to a colleague.

Kagome looked up at Sango as Sango looked down, both of the girls mouths were wide open, Kagome's raven hair slightly hiding her face from view. The two girls couldn't bring themselves to thoughts, or to words.

The two girls went to a nearby bench to sit and were just beginning to catch there breath and have comprehension dawn on them when Sango's cell phone rang.

"Hello," she said through a stifled sniffle.

"Hi, it's Inuyasha. Is Kagome with you. I know she is. Will you put her on the phone?" Sango almost dropped the phone, she went from a flushed pink to a pale white. She handed the phone to Kagome without saying a word.

"Hello?" Kagome questioned; choking back every urge to wail.

"It's Inuyasha. I know I scared you before. I didn't mean to. I really have to talk to you." He attempted to say this in a "would be calm manner" but his voice was less then confident. Kagome hung up the phone and threw it in to the street; it got run over by an 18 wheeler.

"I am sorry Sango, it was Inuyasha. I was afraid and threw it. I'll buy you another one." Kagome began apologizing.

"Don't worry Kagome. Don't worry. You have more to worry about sweetie." Sango held Kagome close to her heart.

"Kagome! Sango! God, I came as soon as I heard. What happened? The details were sketchy. Is everything ok?" Brandon ran up to them and sat down beside Sango. Sango looked over at Kagome before turning back to her husband and whispered the story, of how Kouga committed suicide.

"That is horrible. Kagome, I don't even know how you must feel. I mean, he was my best friend." Brandon looked horror struck, he looked at the ground, and Kagome thought she saw him wipe a tear from his cheek.

Brandon helped Kagome sit down on the sofa; she was still too weak to move on her own.

"Sango, why don't you get a class of water, or a rum and coke or something." Sango went into the kitchen and began preparing a glass.

"Tap water is fine Sang." Kagome said from behind Brandon.

"Usually she gets mad when you call her that." Bradon made this observation casually as though one of their closest friends hadn't just died. Sango came back with the water and handed it to Kagome; Kagome took it but put it immediately on the table without even looking at it. There was a slight knock on the door, barely audible.

"I'll get it." Sango stood up and went to the door. After an unknown conversation that 't be heard in the living room Sango yelled to Kagome.

"Kagome! Kagome!" Sango was screaming practically at the top of her lungs. Kagome got up ran to her friend.

"Stay there Brandon, its not a big deal, we can take care of it." Kagome said as she looked at Inuyasha and Sango standing in the doorway.

"Look, I know I keep scaring you but you have to listen to me. It's about Miroku, I think he has lost it. He ran off looking for Sango when she left that morning and when he couldn't find her he decided to come here to find her. But I don't know where he went. I think he went crazy." Inuyasha finished his story and looked to the girls for sympathy.

"He killed my husband?" Kagome said this as more of a question then a statement.

"It is possible." Sango said as she glanced around to make sure Brandon wasn't within hearing range.

"Your husband? You are married!" Inuyasha practically screamed this last sentence and the girls attempted to shut him up, but Brandon had already heard.

"Who is there girls?" he got up and came to the door. He stared at Inuyasha calmly. "Who are you?" he asked in a would-be-calm manner.

"My name is Inuyasha Tenkai. I met Kagome in Cancun. My friend is missing and I thought these two could help me out." Inuyasha obviously wasn't the lying type.

"Yes, Brandon, darling. This is Inuyasha. Inuyasha, this is Brandon. My husband." Sango said trying to be sweet and not let her voice falter.

"You are married too!" Inuyasha shouted, Brandon looked down at Sango who smiled and tousled her ebony locks out of her face and shrugged. The awkward silence was broken by an odd ringing noise.

"That ring tone. I know that ring tone. Miroku! Miroku is here!" Inuyasha burst into the house and ran up the stairs. He could be heard rummaging around the upstairs rooms.

"What are you doing to my house?" Sango yelled as she too ran up the stairs, followed by Kagome and Brandon, who seemed less curious then the others.

"Look next time you decide to ruin my house, could you," Sango stopped speaking when she looked into the master bed room. No one could be seen in the room, but a sob could be heard from the closet.

"Inuyasha?" Kagome walked up to the closet and saw Inuyasha hugging Miroku close to him.

"What was Miroku doing in your closet?" Kagome questioned, slightly scared and confused.

"We'll never know," Inuyasha stated through mixed sobs, "He is dead." Inuyasha stood up, now covered in Miroku's blood. A champagne glass with the Senor Frogs logo on it, was broken and jabbed into his throat. Blood oozed on to the ground and had begun to coagulate to Miroku's cold, lifeless body. It seemed he had been there for a few days, which was plausible, the closet was only used for going out attire, and the couple hadn't gone out in well over two years.

"He must have killed himself when he found out you were married Sango." Inuyasha deducted, as though Brandon wasn't standing right there.

"Why would he kill himself in my house?" Sango questioned in a threatening tone.

"To leave you a message I don't know. Maybe he killed Kagome's husband and then realized that it was the wrong one. So he came here but freaked out and killed himself in the closet." Inuyasha's theory didn't seem to make sense.

"How do you know all this?" Sango asked plainly.

"I didn't say this was what happened. I was just trying to figure out what could have happened." Inuyasha sat on the bed and looked around the room, he looked in the closet and saw something glimmering. Inuyasha walked in to the closet and picked up the shimmering item.

"You kept this? If you were married I thought you would have thrown it away." Kagome looked over at Inuyasha and the bracelet he was holding.

"The brace... but I, I threw that away." Sango said stunned

"What is that Sango?" Kagome asked.

"It's a souvenir from Cancun. Miroku gave it to me." Sango added that Miroku gave it to her as more of an afterthought. Kagome heard this and looked around to see what Brandon's reaction was, but Brandon was no where in site.

"Sango? Where is Brandon?" Kagome continued to look around for him, but he definitely was no where in the room.

"I don't know. That is weird. He was there just a minute ago. God, this had gone to far, I need to tell him the truth." Sango stated, she looked over at Miroku's cold lifeless body one more time and left the room; Kagome close behind her.

"Wait," Sango was halfway down the stairs when Kagome made her stop, "Where is " she said and began to walk back up the stairs to find Inuyasha. Sango followed, somewhat annoyed. A loud scream from Kagome told her she better run. Sango ran up the stairs, around the corner and back into the master bedroom.

Kagome was backed into the corner breathing heavily and staring straight ahead, as though her head were immobile.

"What, what is it?" Sango looked over to what Kagome was staring at. There stood Brandon, a bloody ash tray in his hand. As though his hand had suddenly lost all muscle the ash tray crashed to the hardwood floor, with an earth shatter sound. Sango looked down to the bleeding Inuyasha, as she tried to scream Brandon began to talk.

"You can hide nothing from me. NOTHING!" he shouted as Sango ran to the corner Kagome and tried to pull Kagome to the door.

"I knew. The day you came back. The guilt on your face! The shame in your heart, wouldn't allow you to be forgiven. EVER! You knew it, I knew it. Everybody knows it! I went on a business trip. My buddy M.T. here confirmed all my doubts." Brandon pointed down at the rotting flesh that once belonged to an animated young man. Sango mumbled M.T. under her breath. A flash back in her mind occurred "Who was that Sango?" Brandon walked in reading, what appeared to be stock quotes.

"That was Kagome.. We are getting together tomorrow for coffee." Sango smiled as though Kagome and her hadn't been separated for three months.

"Oh, I was expecting a call from M.T, oh well."
Just as quickly as it had come, the flashback ended.

"I met Miroku here on business. We became good friends. He told me about this girl he met in Cancun, said he was in love with her. Described her radiant beauty and amazing personality. Then he told me about how dog boy over here was in love with her best friend. Two custom made hotties. I asked there name's naturally. Kagome and Sango, two best friends from our quaint little town.
"Now how many girls do you know, that are best friends, from our town, with those names? I brought him up here with me, we went to the park, I asked him if that was you. Man you should have seen the look on this man's face when he saw Sango. His eyes bugged out of his head, he said 'yeah that's her. Isn't she amazing?' Naturally I agreed you being my WIFE AND ALL!" Brandon's temples began throbbing and his anger was increasing as he relived this memory. Sango and Kagome began quickly running back out the door. Brandon followed them and began to pick up speed, the two girls spun around and ran down the stairs, Brandon following closely, running to catch up to them.

"Come on, don't you want to hear my story! You lying mother fucker!" he yelled through staggered breaths. He kept yelling as he chased the girls all throughout the house.

"So then, I told Miroku the truth, I brought him back to the house, explained my side of the story, he got pissed off and I killed him. Then I went over to Kouga's. I told him what happened, but he didn't believe me, so guess what I did. Yep," Brandon made a slicing noise but neither girl could see the motion he made with his hands. Kagome stopped running and turned around quickly.

"You killed my husband and blamed it on suicide. You mother fucker!" she screamed at him and began to run toward Brandon instead of away.

"Kagome no! He is insane, come on we have to go now." Sango was to late, a gun shot had gone off, Kagome was laying on the ground bleeding from the stomach.

"KAGOME!" Sango crashed to the ground and stared up at Brandon. "Why? Why did you kill my best friend in the whole world, the only person who knew exactly what I was feeling? You could have let her live. Why Brandon?"

"You are so stupid. Because you two cheated on me and Kouga, hello! Then you lied about it and you tried to run away and tell the cops." Brandon said all this in a very sarcastic manner, as though this were all make believe and that they would wake up good as new.

"Well Brandon, there is something I didn't lie about," Sango looked up defiantly at Brandon, "the day I said I would love honor and cherish you, till death do us part. I wasn't lying about that." she took a deep breath, "Well, looks like we are about to part," she paused for a moment allowing the effectiveness of her sentence to set in, "Cause you're gonna die." She stated this nonchalantly picked up a lamp from a nearby table then she broke it over the coffee table and ran at Brandon.

Brandon shot at her, but the chamber was empty. Brandon threw the gun down and ran away. Sango picked it up, looked in the chamber and notice another bullet, silently she put the gun under the sleeve over her oversized sweater.

"Brandon. Don't run away from your fate. It was my fate to cheat on you and loose everyone I loved in the process. Well, now its your fate to die at the hands of your beloved." Brandon turned the corner holding an arsenal of kitchen knives.

"Oh Brandon. You stupid, stupid boy. Why am I in love with you? You are such a moron. No wonder I didn't stop myself from sleeping with Miroku." Sango finally let all of her honesty poor out of her, much like Kagome's blood poured out of her stomach.

"You shut up! You are the evil person here! Not me! You cheated on your husband! I just out my revenge!" Brandon began throwing knives like wild, Sango slid the gun out of the sleeve and unlocked the safety. Brandon looked up as he saw Sango pull the trigger, he muttered, almost to himself, 'all I ever did was love you Sango', when the bullet hit his head and he collapsed to the floor. Sango dropped the gun and began to sob openly. She ran over to Brandon's dead body and began to pick him up, expecting that she missed, and the pool of blood flowing out of Brandon's head was only fake. As she continued to weep, she heard a faint cry.

"Kagome? Kagome." she cried and ran to her best friend.

"Sango. God. How did this happen?" Kagome was crying and holding her stomach. She sat up and sat with her knees bent to one side.

"Well, they do say in Cancun, anything can happen." Sango smiled halfheartedly, she was tired of crying and laughing was the next best thing.

Kagome began to cry openly but she was also smiling and laughing.

"Hey Sang," Kagome said, sitting in a pool of her own blood.

"Yeah Kaggy." Sango replied, staring at her blood stained hands and sobbing.

"Let's go back to Cancun, forever." Kagome smiled and brushed away a tear.

"I'm with you." Sango smiled at her friend.

"Friends forever?" Kagome asked.

"'Till death." Sango said soothingly. Kagome took out a miniature dagger she had bought for protection, she had written on it Cancun she smiled at the word, looked at Sango, smiled brightly and sliced her jugular. As the girl collapsed to the floor, a new pool of blood began to build around her.

"I'm right behind you." Sango pried the dagger from Kagome's hand, and without a second thought or glance at the room she followed Kagome's example and she too cut her jugular. The room faded slowly, and as she sat there dying she began to think about the white sandy beaches, and the gorgeous water. Back to Cancun, with her best friend. Back to be with Marcos and Jeff again.

A distant voice called from somewhere as the black abyss engulfed her; ". . . where it is ninety degrees in the nightly shade, and the sun never stops shining."
