What Was in the Bottle

"Kagome,

This liquid is a sort of… preventative mixture. I have noticed the way you look at InuYasha when you think no one watches. And the other way around. This will make you smell alluring, but is spelled to keep you from conceiving children until you are ready to do otherwise. Apply it to the base of your throat before you…think you need it and it should work.

~Kaede"

Kami! She notices that? Wait she thinks we'll…? He looks at me??? Kagome's mind was reeling and she had to steady herself. If Kaede had noticed it maybe there was a chance that her seemingly hopeless dreams could come true.

"Thanks a lot, Kaede-babaa," InuYasha nearly growled. "Why couldn't Sango have delivered that? You must have known she would think I was peeking! Thanks to you, I ate dirt again!"

Kaede felt a little sorry, but truth was, InuYasha had to touch the vial to activate the spell.

"Well, Sango is busy. Besides, it's not the first time."

"Well don't ask me to do it again, because I won't." InuYasha huffed and crossed his arms. He went outside to lounge in his most comfortable tree when he smelled Kagome coming up the path. She smelled…odd. Different. Must just be perfume or something that Kaede had given her. Damn, she smelled good.

"Hey!" she called into his tree. "You ready for your first lesson?"

"Lesson?" he answered.

"Yeah, I'll teach you how to read, if you still want me to."

InuYasha didn't really care about reading very much. Sure it would be nice not to be thought of as illiterate, but he could get along without it. He'd refuse, but she was the first person since his mother to care enough to offer him help on ANYTHING. His mother died before he was old enough for her to teach him much of anything.

"Okay," he said and leaped down.

"Build a small fire, so we can see and I'll run in and get some things. You hungry?"

"Hai…," he replied, a little embarrassed.

She giggled. "Always. Okay, I'll be back."

He gathered wood and made a fire with an instant torch-thingy that Kagome had given to him. So much easier than flint and steel.

Kagome returned holding (rather precariously) A notebook, a book, two pencils, two sodas, two sets of chopsticks, a cook pot, and balanced on top of it all were a couple of packages of Ramen. InuYasha loved Ramen.

He rushed over to help her carry her things.

"Thanks," she said. He grunted.

Within the next hour, they had cooked the Ramen and were sitting near the fire eating and discussing his education. It was very late, but she wasn't even tired. InuYasha had that effect on her. Made her feel like she could do anything… maybe she could.

"See these symbols? They mean `InuYasha'. InuYasha this is how you write your name." The boy's eyes looked amazed. She giggled and he looked at her.

"How do you write yours, Kagome?" he asked.

"Like this," she replied and scribbled something down. She showed it to him. Her name written was even more beautiful than when it was spoken.

"Okay, one more thing, then I should let you go sleep… How would you write `Kagome loves Shippou'?"

Kagome was startled… "Okay, like this." She showed him.

"Thanks. Can I keep these?" He indicated the sheets of notebook paper.

"Sure. Goodnight, InuYahsa."

"Goodnight," he called after her as she walked into the hut silently.

The hanyou spent the next hour by the fire practicing writing the phrase `InuYasha loves Kagome'.
