Love Can Sometimes Mean Pain

Kagome knew InuYasha had lain down beside her. His presence was something she could sense even through slumber. A few moments after she felt the warmth at her side leave, her eyes sprang open.

InuYasha? She was thinking. Where could he have gone to? (Kagome! You should know the answer to that by now!) She pushed her sleeping bag aside and left the hut to follow her secret love. She was just in time to see a silvery white head disappear into the trees of what is known as InuYasha's forest.

She followed and kept herself at a good distance, wondering why he hadn't already caught her scent. He probably reeked of her, having had his arm draped over her waist, but he should have been able to pick up the anxiety and fear that Kagome's scent was newly laced with.

When he came to the well and stopped, she hid behind the trees and looked past him to the other figure standing in the clearing.

Her heart skipped a beat and an involuntary tear escaped her eye.

The only person in the world she hated, other than Naraku, of course. The only competitor she had for InuYasha's heart. The undead miko that she was reincarnated from. Kikyo.

Stopping to tell herself, beyond all hope, that he is finally leaving her for good, she quieted herself and listened.

"Kikyo," InuYasha whispered, his eyes looked close to tears.

"Yes, InuYasha, I have come for you again. Will you come willingly?" The dead woman looked intently at the one she had loved so many years ago.

"No, Kikyo. I can't. You know that I can't."

"Why? Is it you're pathetic little quest to defeat Naraku for what he did to you? To us? That won't matter after you and I are together. After we find the shards and wish for your humanity." The older miko's voice took on a venomous tone. "Or is it that miko girl? That Kagome?" She practically spat the name.

InuYasha lost all his words at the mention of the one he cared for so deeply. Kikyo saw his emotions flash across his face. "How could you? How could you love another? She's just a girl. And on top of that, she's just a copy of me. Why would you want a copy when you could have the real thing?" Kikyo's hand brushed lovingly over InuYasha's tear stained cheek. Kagome's heart broke and she left as quickly but as silently as possible. She couldn't bear to watch the rest.

"Kikyo, I won't deny that I love Kagome," InuYasha started and Kikyo's loving gaze turned into a glare. "I love her, it's true. I know I made a promise to protect you, and that is still my intention. I can be your friend and I can protect you, but I could never love you the way I once thought I did. I've waited so long to screw up my courage and say this. I hope you understand." InuYasha breathed out. It felt like a weight had been removed from his chest.

"They way you once THOUGHT you did?"

"Yes, Kikyo. I never loved you. It was never possible for me to."

"Why? InuYasha, I cared about you. I loved you," Kikyo looked like she was about to cry.

"No, you didn't. I thought you did. Someone who loved me wouldn't have wanted me to change for her. You asked that I become ningen so that we could be together. That was the most selfish thing I've ever noticed of anyone. You wanted me to alter my entire being so that you could have what you called a `normal life'," he said with growing animosity. "I was just so eager for the chance to be accepted, I didn't notice it then."

"Did that lowlife copy push this into your brain?" Kikyo asked the raw seething hatred she felt towards the hanyou and Kagome creeping up into her voice.

"No, I have a brain of my own, thanks. I figured out my mistakes on my own and I will make sure not to repeat them. In fact," he added, "you know what I love most about Kagome? She never asked what I would change myself into with the Shikon Jewel. She became my friend and accepted me as a hanyou."

"She is a fool. She should have seen that demon blood is demon blood no matter whose it is. I wanted to take your evilness away. She celebrates it."

"No, Kikyo. She celebrates life. She realizes that just because one has demon blood, doesn't make them evil. Look at Shippo. Not an evil bone in his body, yet he is a full blooded kitsune demon. She knows that I am not evil. No one who loved me ever would.

You know what?" he continued. "I'm not even sure she loves me back, but I know that I can't live without her, so love reciprocated or not… she'll always be my first choice."

Kikyo was beyond rage. "I thought you said you'd protect me?"

InuYasha steadily looked at her. "I will. I will make sure you are safe and as you should be."

Kikyo looked a little more relieved as at least that was a starting place for winning him back.

"Which is why," he continued, "I'm using my wish on the Shikon Jewel not to turn youkai or ningen, but to set your soul free so you can finally rest."

With that he turned around and walked away, leaving Kikyo fuming.

You cannot live without her? She thought menacingly. Then prepare to die because I'll see that you loose her all too soon.

InuYasha was fast approaching the hut when he heard the fait sobs that told him Kagome was crying. He smelled salt. He found her leaning agains a tree to the side of Kaede's residence and tried to help her up. She pushed his hand away. InuYasha's heart shattered. "InuYasha. How could you? How could you have hurt me so?"

~End of Chapter Five

InuYasha: I'm glad somebody finally realizes I DON'T love that hollow dirt clump Kikyo. ::Gives Kate a "Thank You" kiss (HEY, I AM the author, right?) ::

Me: Well, be fair… you used to love her.

InuYasha: That's what they want you to think.

Me: Be real! You did. And you still hold on to her because she was your first love.

InuYasha: Oh, fine! So what?

Me: Just you wait. Didn't I tell you Kagome would be furious?

InuYasha: Damn, remind me to stay on your good side, Kate.

Me: Reminded.
