Part 6

Kagome took slow, even breaths to steady out her breathing. She could still hear her heart racing as in pounded painfully against her ribcage, her lungs burning with much needed oxygen that she couldn't seem to get.

What was wrong with her? Why was she so nervous and shaky? She had never, in her entire life, tremble before like she was now. What was wrong with her?

She tried telling herself that it was because that just seconds ago her life was almost taken away from her, it laid in the palm of her enemy. He had scared her and she was just now starting to feel the after affects of it.

That was it… she was just calming herself down from a near death experience. Not because she was being held by the most gorgeous man she had ever seen and was only inches way from her, causing her to feel the warmth of his dreamy body. His lips just an inch away from touching her own.

She did not care about him! He could die in the middle of the night for no reason and she wouldn't care less. How could she? She didn't know him or owe him anything. Hell, she didn't even know his name!

Why would she care about him?

Kagome flopped down on her back onto the futon, pulling her blanket up over her head in hopes to pretend that it was all just a dream. She never went out on patrol, she didn't break the rules by bringing a wounded demon into their house, she didn't tend him and bathe him, and she most certainly did not see "it". She wasn't laying on the couch but laying in her nice, soft, warm bed just waiting for the comforting depths of sleep to consume her. None of it was real… it was all just a bad dream.

But unfortunately, no matter how many times Kagome said it didn't make it any more the truth.

'Still…' she thought. 'If it was a dream, it really wouldn't be all that bad. He really was nice to look at, even if he is a demon.'

Kagome sighed to herself, removing her head from under her blanket and rolled to her side, facing towards the living room doorway.

She could hear him moving around on her bed, the springs squeaking loudly under his heavy weight. He was more than likely going to complain about the mattress in the morning, probably something about it being too soft or too firm for him and demand a room of his own. One that isn't as girly.

And that was another thing. How was is possible for someone to look so sweet and peaceful and innocent at one moment in sleep while being rude, arrogant, obnoxious and a complete asshole when they are awake?

'Maybe he has brain damage or something.'

Kagome giggled to herself at the thought. Of course, she knew that the possibility of him being so were unlikely, it really would explain one or two things about his kind.

"Ahem."

Kagome stopped laughing and turned to see him standing a few feet away. She could instantly feeling her body reacting to his closeness, her heart picking up in tempo and her lungs shrinking a couple of sizes too small.

He was taller than she had first thought, maybe a good head taller than herself. His shoulders looked broader and had a strong looking build to them. It was hard to be certain of what he might look like under all of the heavy bandaging but regrettably for her, she already knew what he had to offer and didn't need to use her imagination to picture his perfect body.

He looked like a Greek God standing in front of her, his long white hair hanging loose around his frame and shining a soft light blue in the moonlight. His intense amber-gold eyes looking tamed and gentle while holding a hint of wildness.

"I came to apologize."

Kagome arched an elegant brow and sat up, crossing her legs underneath her. "Apologize for what exactly?"

He seemed to feel uneasy and nervous, shifting his weight from one leg to another while being careful of his injured thigh. It was almost as if he was unsure of what he was doing, like he didn't know how to go about apologizing. Hasn't he ever apologize before?

"I didn't mean to snap at you," he started, finding something on the floor in front of his feet interesting to look at. "I have no reason to be angry or upset with you, but I let all my anger and frustration out on you anyway. And for that, I am sorry."

Kagome observed him carefully, her eyes not failing to miss how his muscles seemed to tense up a little before composing back to normal. He was trying to hold something back from her.

"What happened to you?"

His body stiffened and his muscles seemed to turn into wire, his body tensing up so badly that it seemed like his whole being couldn't help but tremble. His hands clenched into fists at his sides and his jaw locked firmly into place in attempts to fight for some control.

Kagome got to her feet and moved to stand by his side but kept enough distance so that they weren't touching. "Please…" she said softly, the soothing sound of her voice helping him to relax a little. "Tell me why they attacked you. Why would your own people do that to you?"

"They were not my people." He replied coldly, his eyes darting up to lock with hers. The wild look in their golden depths making her want to take a step back. "They are his."

"I… I don't understand."

"It's a demon matter, so drop it."

Kagome grabbed him by the upper arm as he turned to leave and pulled him back. "Not anymore!"

"It is none of your business!" He screamed, pulling his arm free from her grasp. "It's between me and him, demon to demon! This situation doesn't concern you or your kind so leave it be!"

He stepped away from her, forgetting about the huge slash and stitches in his thigh - his leg giving out under the opposing weight that it was unable to hold.

Instinctively, Kagome reached out to help him - wrapping both arms around his torso to catch him and to take some weight off of the weak limb. "Careful."

She ignored the little growl he sent her way and helped him straighten. She could feel the muscles in his back and stomach quiver, giving her goose bumps all the way up her spine.

Unaware of how close they actually were, Kagome tilted her head up to see if he was alright. Her nose only a hair away from touching his. Her ocean blue eyes met his golden amber again and locked, the strength of looking away flowing out of her as the power of his eyes captivated her.

Something passed between them, the air around them cracked and neither could hold back the shivers that raced down both their spines.

'Lord help me… he's so handsome…'

Kagome felt herself blush, her cheeks turning a light shade of pink. Her heart skipping a beat and started to pound faster. The natural smell of him flowing over her in waves, intoxicating her mind.

'By Jävä… she's so innocent looking…'

Inu Yasha's breath caught in his chest at the pure sight of her. Her ocean blue eyes looking like crystals as they danced with desire in the faint moonlight, the light shad of pink on her checks giving her appearance a mesmerizing look. He hadn't wanted to admit it but since he first saw her in that alley, she appeared to look fragile - like a porcelain doll that could shatter into pieces with just one wrong touch - something he secretly wanted to help prevent. His eyes darted down to her lips as her tongue unconsciously peeked out to wet them, causing the surface to look shiny and look oh so inviting to him.

God how he wanted to taste those lips!

Slowly they leaned forward until their noses brushed. Both of them searching the others eyes for answers to unasked questions that raced through their minds. Somehow they seemed to understand each others silent plead, their faces leaning towards each other. Eyes closing as their lips touched with just the slightest of touches.

"Kagome?"

Miroku's voice seemed to penetrate through the haze fog in Kagome's mind and she quickly pulled away as soon as she felt his warmth gone. She could feel herself turning hot in the face and avoided making eye contacted.

"Kagome?" Miroku called again. "Is everything alright out here? Do you need any help?"

Kagome took a shaky breath. "Ye-yes… everything's fine Miroku." She waited until she heard the door to Miroku's and Sango's room close before letting out a breath that she didn't know she was holding. When she looking up back at him, she found him watching her with keen eyes, something unreadable moving in the back of their depths. "You should head back to bed now and get some sleep. You'll be going in front of the elders tomorrow and you're going to need your strength."

He nodded, turning to head back to bed. "In the future, it would be wise to prevent this from happening again."

Kagome watched as he disappeared down the hall, not even bothering to turn around to see her reaction or even wait for a reply. Not that she had one. What could she say? No? She knew that it shouldn't happen again and it wouldn't. What had just happened a moment ago was a mistake. And he was right - it was something that shouldn't be repeated and should be forgotten about.

'Good thing too…' she thought, feeling a little bit relieved. 'Because I don't think I could survive another one…'
