Whispers in the Night
Kagome, Miroku, Sango and Shippo all sat around the small fire in the middle of the room. Kagome was boiling the water for their daily ritual of instant noodles, Inuyasha's favorite. Kagome spent all night worrying about him, after what happened, and then he walked off somewhere and was out all night.
"I wonder where Inuyasha is?" Kagome asked aloud.
"He's probably thinking of what to do about last night... He did attack you after all Kagome-sama," replied Miroku as his hand glided toward Sango's rear like a serpent hunting its prey, but then, with equal slyness, Sango jabbed him in the ribs, just before the monk's hand could move any farther. Miroku sighed and continued, "He should be back soon, I'm sure."
"I agree," said Sango, "Inuyasha is never far when rumors of Naraku are floating around."
"Did someone mention Naraku?" asked Inuyasha entering the room on cue.
"Inuyasha! You jerk," whined the tiny kitsune, latching onto the hanyou's face. "Where were you? Kagome was."
"Shippo," Kagome interrupted, "that's enough... Come eat your lunch." Her eyes never left the ground.
"Kagome..." But he did as he was told, climbed down from Inuyasha and started to eat his lunch in silence.
"You too Inuyasha. After what happened last night you probably need a good meal." Inuyasha's ears slightly drooped at the reminder. Inuyasha took a cup of noodles and inhaled them slightly apart from the group.
"So..." mumbled Inuyasha quietly through mouthfuls of noodles, "You said there were rumors about Naraku?"
"Yes," said the exterminator stiffly, "There was a rumor that some villagers in the east saw a giant jaki flying over head just yesterday."
"Then we go east," Inuyasha said, his mouth full of the last of his noodles. "We should get going as soon as possible." So, after a rather awkward lunch the group started their journey east.
Meanwhile, in the east, a shapeless, faceless figure lined in the dark stood waiting.
"Come to me Inuyasha... And when you do... all your dreams will come true..."
"Hey guys... I think we should set up camp," mentioned Kagome as she saw the sun setting behind her.
"Why?" Asked Inuyasha, "We haven't even been walking that long."
"Yeah, I know... But look," Kagome pointed to the setting sun. "It's getting really dark."
"I agree. We should set up camp here for tonight," Miroku said as he sat with his back against a nearby tree.
"Inuyasha, it's your turn to build the fire," said Sango as she sat next to Miroku.
"So, you stick me with the dirty work," growled Inuyasha under his breath as he walked toward the forest to get firewood.
"I'll help you..." said Kagome as she followed him into the woods.
"Do you think they'll be okay?" Asked the exterminator.
"Yeah, they'll be fine." Said the Monk as he put an arm around Sango's shoulders, and for once didn't grope her.
"Um Inuyasha, what happened last night?" Asked Kagome as she collected dry wood for the fire. "Why did you start to change into your youkai form?"
"It's because you love her..." the voice whispered in his ear.
"N-nothing, it was just a dream."
"But that's all it was, right? Just a dream?"
"It's because you love her..."
"..."
"Inuyasha?"
"It's because you love her..."
"Y-yeah... just a dream..." he said as he continued to pick up wood with one hand and put it in the other.
"It's because you love her..." the voice continued.
"Kagome..." Inuyasha walked up to Kagome, their faces barely a breath apart.
"It's because you love her..."
Inuyasha grabbed her around the shoulders with his free arm and held her to his chest tightly. "I'm sorry if I worried you..."
"N-no problem," she stammered.
"We should head back," Inuyasha loosened his grip and walked back to camp, Kagome close behind.
When they returned, Inuyasha set up the wood and Shippo lit it with his Foxfire. Since no one was really hungry everyone retired early and had a restful nights sleep, everyone, that is, except Inuyasha.
Inuyasha looked around the white atmosphere. "Damn it. Where are Kagome and the others?" Inuyasha asked out loud. "Keh, probably took off without me." Inuyasha kept the hard look on his face but couldn't help but drop his ears a bit. "Feh, why should I care?"
"It's because you love her," taunted a familiar voice.
"What the hell are you talking about!!!" Yelled Inuyasha to no one in particular. "Who the hell are you!"
"Are you really that stupid Inuyasha?"
"What did you say?" Inuyasha asked in a low growl.
"I mean look at you. First, you're ignoreing the fact that the love of your life is slipping away from you, now you're talking to yourself. I'm ashamed," the voice said, ringing in Inuyasha's head. The voice came down to a mere whisper. Inuyasha's ears swiveled back to pick up the barely audible words, breath tickling the tips, "But I can help you... I can give you what you want..."
"...Kagome..."
"Heh, bingo." Inuyasha felt the breath on his ear disappear. Turning to see where the voice had run off to he found an all too familiar no-face. A dark, shapeless figure he had seen many times already this week.
"You! Your the bastard that killed Kagome!" Inuyasha yelled as he went for the spot where tetsuaiga was, only to grip the air. "... Damn it."
"Excuse you? I didn't kill Kagome, you did."
"You fucking liar!" Inuyasha flexed a clawed hand sweeping it fiercely at the youkai's neck. When it made contact Inuyasha smirked in triumph. He looked up, expecting to see the youkai fall to the ground, only, that wasn't what he saw. There was a terrible pain in his heart as he found himself unable to breath, "... Kagome..." he choked out as the girl fell to the ground, her once blue eyes fogged over in a gray haze. "...No... He was... right?"
"Told you so. You killed her," the demon lifted Kagome's head up by her hair, not wanting to get blood on his perfect, non-existent hand.
"...No."
"Yes. But it's not the end. I can fix it. I can make her ours. All you have to do is what I say and I can make it right. I wont let her leave us... Not to death nor to another man..." The nothingness of the demon slowly started to take form, it effortlessly transformed as he continued, "Come now Inuyasha, let me make it all better."
Inuyasha slowly walked toward the demon, eyes half shut. It was now, before him, nothing more than a red and white blur. Finally, he reached the one that promised him such great things as love. "How...?" Inuyasha started to ask weakly.
"Shhh..." Cooed the demon, "Let me worry about that. You just rest now. When you wake up, it'll all be better. I promise." Inuyasha nodded as his newfound friend came and embraced him in a fierce grip. "Now Inuyasha, sleep."
"Sleep...." Inuyasha repeated.
"Heh, you are now mine." Said the demon, as he gave an evil grin in spite of himself. "Sweet dreams."
Inuyasha woke slowly taking in his surroundings. "What happened..." he asked. As if answering his question a gust of wind blew a small train of leafs about. Inuyasha followed them with his eyes until they met with a pair of feet. He looked to see whom they belonged to, but before he could reach the face, they had disappeared. Only a second later did he see a flash in the corner of his eye, then another, then behind him a stick cracked. "Who's there?!" Inuyasha demanded. When he heard no reply, he decided to check it out. No way was he going to let them get away, it could be one of Naraku's spies after all. With that in mind, Inuyasha sprung from his perch on the tree branch to the next with ease. "You can run, but you can't hide," Inuyasha laughed. He was finally starting to enjoy himself after many long days, too bad it wouldn't last.
Inuyasha finally caught up with the figure ahead of him. "Ha, got you now!" He said arrogantly as he cracked his knuckles. "What were you doing back there!?"
"Oh, just passing by." said the voice humorously turning to face Inuyasha.
Inuyasha stared at the figure before him. It had flowing white hair, just like Inuyasha. Its eye's were a piercing amber, just like Inuyasha. It wore the same billowing fire rat haori as Inuyasha and even mimicked his confused expression. "What are you looking at," it seemed to ask. The copies lips moved but the sound was in Inuyasha's head. This copy smiled, showing Inuyasha's fangs, and crossed his arms. He leaned toward Inuyasha and whispered, "I'm handsome, aren't I?"
Inuyasha stepped back and almost lost his balance on the tree branch, "Who are you?" He asked in a low growl.
"I'm disappointed Inuyasha," it said, "really, you should know yourself." The copy turned and walked tight rope to the end of the branch. He turned abruptly and smiled a sly smile. It hopped off the branch and disappeared.
"Inuyasha?" Kagome called out to him, looking this way and that.
Inuyasha looked down at Kagome mechanically, he had seen himself kill her in this dream. His copy was there, stroking her cheek. The copy looked up, "She really is beautiful you know. I'm surprised you'd ever dream of killing her."
"Get away from her," Inuyasha growled menacingly, "I'll kill you if you hurt her." He jumped down and stood over the copy, glaring daggers at it.
"Yeah, we know how well that worked!" The copy stood and smiled at Inuyasha, "Don't worry, buddy. I am." he looked around suspiciously and leaned in as if to tell Inuyasha a most guarded secret, "You," it whispered. The copy then broke into maniacal laughter and walked off holding its side. It stopped at the edge of the forest and looked at Inuyasha over its shoulder, a serious look upon its face. Inuyasha looked at the copy, something told him that this was indeed only a figment of his imagination, yet in the back of his mind he thought otherwise. "We'll talk later, dog man. Don't forget, I can help you." With that, he leaped into the sky and disappeared.
"Um... Inuyasha? W-who were you talking to?"
