CHAPTER 6 :)
InuYasha slowly woke from a deep, peaceful slumber. The sun was high, shining brightly through the window. He felt the warmth of someone cuddled against him, cool breath caressing his chest, warming his heart. The memory of last night was fresh in his mind. He had taken Kagome, the last thing he had ever imagined possible. Kagome was asleep, her head buried in him, she looked exhausted even in her sleep. He would let her rest, she deserved it. Needed it.
It gave him time to think. InuYasha thought about the coming days, what they would be like now that he had loved Kagome. She didn’t want him to hide from her...that would mean being open...Miroku and the others would find out. He didn’t know if that was a good thing or not, but one thing was certain, the Enemy would discover his weakness. He would have to be more alert and keep Kagome safe.
Kagome’s breathing patterns began to change, she was waking, but it would take some time. Another thought suddenly struck him. That night he had made love to her...she could be...pregnant! Sure, he could prevent it, her scent would tell him when she could and couldn’t conceive his child and he could hold his seed back when necessary. But he hadn’t done any of that. Lust had taken over. She could be carrying his child...that would be very bad. It would burden her and terminate their search of the Jewel Shards. Naraku would cause more chaos...and her mother, what would she do if she found out Kagome was pregnant by him? Not something I want to find out!
InuYasha gulped and began praying for everything to be ok. He wouldn’t know for a couple days, her scent was the key, it told him everything. Oh boy... Kagome stirred, finally coming around. She felt the warmth of his body against her and she smiled, opening her eyes. InuYasha swallowed his worries for her sake and returned the smile, running his claws through her hair. Her tangled strands slid off her shoulders, revealing pink fang marks on her neck, his marks. The wounds were already scars. How had they healed so quickly? Maybe he hadn’t bit her as hard as he thought he did. Well, it didn’t matter. That was over with now that Kagome was his lover. “Morning...love.” He tried the new word on his tongue, liking the sound of it. Kagome’s sleepy eyes softened at what he called her. “Love...I like that name...say it again.” She said in a low whisper.
InuYasha pushed himself up to lean half over her and repeated the word. “Love.” He kissed her, unable to resist the urge to touch her. Kagome wrapped her arms around his neck, in pure heaven. They didn’t stop at one kiss or two or three, it was impossible. InuYasha was drawn to her and before he could think, he found himself straddling her, caressing her breasts and kissing her body. Kagome welcomed the attention, remembering how good it felt when he filled her, the kisses and caresses, the rhythm of his sweating body. She wanted to feel those things again.
She was to the point of begging as he licked a path down her belly when there was a loud knock on the door. It snapped them both out of their desires, Kagome grabbing at InuYasha in surprise. “Oh god!” She struggled to sit up, pushing a shocked InuYasha off her. The knock pounded louder a second time on the door, obviously as to wake up who they guessed was sleeping on the other side. “Hold on a minute!” Kagome called in as loud of voice as she could choke out at the moment. She shoved back the covers in haste, a large stain suddenly visible on the sheets.
She blushed, looking at InuYasha who noticed the evidence of last night’s events. He matched her in color and pulled the blankets to hide everything. Kagome grabbed her robe, feeling bare and embarrassed in the open. “InuYasha...uh, just stay there. Pull the sheets over everything but your head and pretend to sleep.” She ran to the other bed and thrashed about the blankets and pillows to make it look like she had slept there and not with InuYasha. More pounding echoed through the room and Kagome yelled that she was coming as she pulled the robe tight to her, tying the sash. Her hair was a mess but it didn’t matter.
“What?” She practically yelled as she cracked the door to see who it was. Yuka, Eri, and Ayume were all crowded at her door as if expecting to come in. Kagome gasped when she saw Hojo hanging around in the back and she all but slammed the door in her friends’ faces. “Uh...hi? What do you want?” She was speechless, trying to think of some excuse to chase them away, especially Hojo. Yuka gave a puzzled look at her friend’s odd behavior. “Kagome? What’s up with you? It’s 1:00 in the afternoon, your cousin came in about two hours ago.” Kagome blinked. “I slept that late! I didn’t know, I forgot to set the alarm when Inu- uh, I mean when the storm hit. I’m so sorry, I’ll go get dressed.”
“Whoa, slow down there Kagome. You’re hiding something, I know it.” Eri stepped in, pushing at the door to see into Kagome’s room. Kagome was getting desperate. They’re going to see him, why does Hojo have to be here! Wait...he’s gone... She looked down the hall to see him turn a corner and vanish. Eri shoved the door open and stood in the doorway. “You’re hiding a guy in here I bet. I smell sex.” She joked, not seeing InuYasha who was trying to become invisible where he lay. Kagome went pale when Eri said that.
Ayume was staring at the lump that was InuYasha’s form hidden under the covers. She immediately saw the white hair and ears sticking up from the white and green sheets. Kagome knew she had discovered InuYasha, but Ayume kept her mouth shut. “Guys, I really need to get ready, I’m late as it is.” Kagome pleaded, hoping to shoo them out before anyone else discovered her lover. It worked as they all filed back out of her room, Ayume as quiet as a church mouse. Kagome’s eyes thanked her and begged her to keep quite, Ayume winking and following everyone else down the hall to the elevator. “Hurry up, everyone’s waiting on you!” Yuka called as they turned the corner and vanished like Hojo had done.
Kagome sighed with relief and shut the door, almost slamming it. “That was too close.” InuYasha crawled from the covers and stood up, glad that that was finally over. “I think Ayume saw you, she’ll question me afterwards...they all want to meet you...” She was blushing again as she saw InuYasha standing naked by the bed, her virgin blood on him. InuYasha felt himself harden and he quickly sat on the bed to hide it. Kagome was dying to finish what they had started before the intruding knock. But she didn’t have time, everyone was waiting on her.
She fled to the bathroom and found InuYasha’s cloths which were a tad damp. She tossed them on the bed to get his attention, motioning him to come in the bathroom with her. “I want you to come with me.” She said, pulling him into the square room with her and locking the door.
Shift...
Sota spotted his sister coming down the hall, his jaw dropping when he saw InuYasha walking beside her. She’s letting him come out in the open! She’s finally lost it. “Mom, Kagome’s here with InuYasha.” He warned, dodging into the huge dining room filled with tables, food, and people. Tioen heard his warning and smiled a devilish grin. “About time.”
Kagome walked down the hall, InuYasha following behind her, his eyes taking in all the new sights before him. He was nervous, there were too many human here, too many eyes staring at him. It made him feel small in the strange world that was not his. But he was here for Kagome, nothing more. She had asked him to come...No I think she bribed me. He smiled on the inside, remembering the interesting game they had played in the shower. Kagome pinned between him and the wall, moans of pleasure and torture echoing through the steam filled bathroom, her wet body heaving with his rhythm...he liked that game and hoped there would be more like it...
Kagome led him to a room filled with more people with tables and chairs strung out in rows. He picked out Sota, Gramps, and Kagome’s mother gathered in a corner, Sota stuffing his face with food from a plate. There was another person with them, a young man with dark brown hair dressed up in a fancy brown suit. He smelled odd, like something familiar but new at the same time, something that made his spine crawl. Kagome saw the guy too and bolted to join the small group. She ran and jumped at the stranger, hugging him tightly. InuYasha was shocked and stopped dead in his tracks, seeing Kagome all over another male. His blood was beginning to boil until Sota grabbed his attention, pulling him aside.
“Hey, what are you doing down here? I thought you went back.” He offered InuYasha a plate of crackers with cheese smeared on top and pointed to an empty set of couches on the opposite side of the room. InuYasha looked back at Kagome who was in deep conversation with her mom and the stranger. He suddenly felt left out. Who is this creep? Who ever he was, he didn’t like him.
“Who’s that guy Kagome’s all over?” InuYasha questioned, pouting. “He’s our favorite cousin Tioen. He’s the one who put this whole thing together, turning a one-day event into four so everyone could come. When we were little, Tioen took us all over the place, to the mall, out to eat...Until he got that job offer a couple years ago. Now it’s always work, work, work. He moved to Kyoto, a good day’s drive from here. It’s strange though... there was an accident about two weeks ago and Tioen was hurt pretty badly. He looks ok now, not one scratch.” InuYasha only growled. I don’t care if he’s a cousin or not. I don’t like him.
Sota gave him the plate of crackers he had in his hand and sighed. “I just want to go home. I can’t do anything here, mom says I’m too young.” InuYasha laughed at his complaining. “Called life kid. Try growing up and stop whining.” He shoved a cracker in his mouth and leaned back into the sofa. He tried to ignore the stares he could feel from other people looking at him. “What is this place supposed to be anyway?” “I don’t know really. It’s used for big celebrations and parties from what mom told me.” InuYasha reached for another cracker, finding the plate empty. “I’ll go get some more.” Sota jumped up and walked to the table where the rest of his family was gathered.
I should have stayed in the room... InuYasha hated feeling alone. He felt like an outcast cornered in a strange room with people giving him weird looks, some pointing, some giggling and turning their heads. His nightmare was coming back to haunt him... “InuYasha?” Kagome’s voice startled him. She sat down next to him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to run off like that.” She could tell he was uncomfortable, probably hurt by her. “I didn’t expect to see Tioen...well maybe I did but I got a little excited...Sorry.” InuYasha didn’t look at her, choosing to stare at the ground, feeling people’s eyes on him.
Kagome put her head on his shoulder, her mind racing to find a way to open him back up. He was crawling back into his think shell, hiding again, from everyone, from her. “Say something, please.” She pleaded in a low voice. She took notice of the people glancing in their direction. That’s what’s upsetting him! Damn it people, stop staring! He’s no different than you! I need to get InuYasha’s attention off them before he disappears on me again. He always runs from the past.
Kagome sighed, trying to gather the courage to put plan B into action. To kiss InuYasha in public didn’t bother her. To kiss him while her mother, grandfather, brother, and cousin were all there in clear view...that’s what nipped at her. What would they say? What did it matter? She loved the feel of his lips against hers, she loved InuYasha. That’s what mattered right? Kagome pulled her legs up under her on the couch, leaning over to kiss InuYasha on the cheek. Hmm, that got him. She laughed inside when InuYasha jumped in surprise, blushing.
She stole a look at her family. Gramps and Tioen looked dumbfounded, both of them turning out of sight to talk quietly about something, probably about the peck she had given InuYasha. Her mother had missed it, along with her brother who was nowhere in sight. She turned her attention back to InuYasha. “Relax, that’s all you need to do. Mom says my party starts in fifteen minutes, better find an empty table for us to sit at before they’re all full.” “I think I found my ‘table’ right here.” InuYasha said, his full attention on Kagome.
“Can I join you?” Kagome teased, easing herself into his arms. It was working; she could feel his body relaxing, he wasn’t wary of the people around them anymore. “I think you already have...” He found himself with Kagome sitting in his arms, feeling the warmth of her body, her scent surrounding him. It was plain torment. “Kagome! Hey, Yuka, Ayume! Come quick.” Eri’s voice yelled across the room when she spotted Kagome in a guy’s arms. “Kagome’s cuddled up with her boyfriend!”
They all ran over and crowded around her and InuYasha. The first thing on everyone’s tongue was “Dog ears? What, is he dressed up in a costume?” Kagome looked at InuYasha who made a face and began to put on the pout act. “Uh...yeah! It’s his...family tradition to, uh, dress up as an animal when there’s a party...” She came up with the stupid lie, unable to explain the truth. InuYasha gave her a “Nice try Kagome. They’ll never buy it!” look.
Eri was smarter than that and blew off the lie with a wave of her hand. She reached over to pull the ‘fake’ ears off, InuYasha growling as she tugged his head this way and that. “They won’t come off...they’re stuck...and warm, almost as if they’re real.” “That’s because they are real stupid! Stop pulling my ears! Why must everyone go for the ears?” InuYasha snapped, fed up with Eri’s tugging. He batted her hand away and would have stuffed his hands into his sleeves had Kagome not been sitting in his lap. “Because they’re cute. I like you’re ears.” Kagome answered, reaching up to rub one, laughing when InuYasha leaned into the caress. Her friends were confused. “They can’t be real. What are you, some hybrid science experiment?” Yuka joked, glaring at Kagome to spill the truth about who this guy really was.
Kagome sighed having no other choice. She would have to tell them, not that they would believe her. “He’s a Half-Demon.” She said simply, waiting for the questions to flood her. “Half-Demon? Hey, I heard that term before...In the history book I think.” Ayume spoke up. Her mind always drifted back to school, especially when it came to math and history. No wonder she had straight A’s.
Kagome gasped at Ayume’s comment. He’s in the textbook! How could I have forgotten? My InuYasha is in our history book, he’s a legend. I wonder if I’m in there too... “Ayume you’re a genius! Guys, this may sound crazy, but InuYasha’s not from here. He lives 500 years in the past in the Feudal Era. He’s a Half-Demon, born between a human and a powerful Demon. It’s in the history book like Ayume said. Yeah, I see you don’t believe me Eri, but it’s the truth! See look. He has dog ears, claws, and fangs...” Kagome pried InuYasha’s mouth open to show the fangs, her mind suddenly flashing back to last night and the pain in her neck. He bit me last night...why? Are the marks visible? I hope not...then I’ll never hear the end of it! I need to check when I get back to the hotel.
Yuka was about to protest, thinking it was all just a prank when the lights suddenly blacked out. Kagome grabbed at InuYasha, scared witless like so many other people who gasped in surprise. InuYasha was instantly alert, his Demonic golden eyes darting everywhere, unaffected by the darkness. He held Kagome close, his muscles tense, ready to spring out of danger with her. The next moment the lights flickered back on and everyone sighed in relief. Tioen came pushing past a clustered group of people, jogging over to Kagome who was blinking at the sudden bright light. InuYasha kept a firm hold around her waist as the man approached.
“Everyone all right? I don’t know what that was all about...I have someone checking it out right now. Uh, hi. I’m Tioen, Kagome’s cousin.” Tioen nodded to InuYasha who was glaring at him. InuYasha felt uneasy about this cousin. There was just something that wasn’t right about him. Sota joined in, a cup in his hand. “Hey, when is the party starting? I’m hungry.” Tioen laughed at him. “Hungry? You’ve eaten everything in here and you’re still hungry?” “No, not really. Just bored. I can’t do anything remember, I’m too young. I want to go home and play with Buyo.” Tioen laughed again, patting Sota on the back.
“Don’t whine Sota, be a man like InuYasha over here for example. It’ll all be over soon enough.” InuYasha continued to glare at him, hoping to chase him away. “Kagome, sorry to keep you waiting, but some things haven’t come in yet. The pizza guy is last and now we’re having trouble with these stupid lights.” Kagome swatted away the excuses. “Now look whose whining. I could care less, take your time. I’m not complaining.” Tioen nodded and took off back the way he came.
“That cousin of yours gives me the creeps. I don’t trust him.” InuYasha growled, drawing in everyone’s attention. Yuka, Eri, and Ayume were silent. They had finally met Kagome’s “Mystery Man” and so far, they had gotten nowhere. Where did he come from? Why was he dressed in weird cloths...he was barefoot! His eyes weren’t normal either. Golden. Must be contacts...and what was up with his hair? Long and dyed a silvery white? Don’t forget the ears... This guy had to be a thug or punk. Kagome didn’t need to put up with this kind of guy...already he was showing his aggressive and possessive side.
“What are you looking at?” InuYasha snapped, seeing the three girls staring at him. “Kagome...can we talk to you?” Yuka grabbed Kagome’s arm and pulled her away from InuYasha. Ayume stayed behind, not wanting be involved with any arguments. If Kagome liked this guy, then there was no reason to worry as long as she was treated ok. Besides, Ayume thought to herself, I think he looks cute, Kagome’s got good taste in my opinion. Eri and Yuka ducked out of the room dragging a frustrated Kagome with them who apologizing with her eyes to InuYasha at their rudeness.
Nice try guys but he can still hear us from way over there. He’s Half-Demon. Kagome leaned against the wall, waiting for the lecture. “Kagome, please, listen to me,” Eri spoke firmly. “That Inu...Inu...” She struggled to remember the name. “His name is InuYasha.” Kagome finished, crossing her arms. “What ever his name is. He’s bad for you. You deserve better than that. Look at the way he’s dressed, don’t you realize that people are staring at you like you’re crazy? He looks weird dressed like that.” Kagome stiffened as Eri continued to degrade her lover. How dare she! “He could be dangerous and-” Kagome cut her off.
“Stop! I won’t hear it. I can’t believe you, both of you! You don’t even know him like I do! You haven’t even tried to get to know him. You’re acting like everyone else. So what if he’s different, I love him for who he is!” Her raised voice shocked Eri and Yuka. Ayume wasn’t in sight. Kagome felt sick at her friend’s words. “I thought you were my friends...Maybe I should have stayed at the village with Sango and Miroku. They treat us both like living beings, not like dirt.” She said that portion more to herself than to the two shamed girls in front of her.
“I don’t think it’s wise to come around us. If InuYasha wants to bite, I won’t stop him.” She stalked away and headed back to the lounge corner, finding the area filled with other people, InuYasha gone. He must have heard them and ran off...maybe he’s in the concert room in the rafters, either there or back in the hotel. I hope he’s not hurt. She ignored Eri and Yuka as she passed them, trying to find her way through the maze of rooms and connecting hallways. It took her a minute, but she found the huge concert room, filled with people and music as always. But no InuYasha. The rafters were empty.
“Where is he?” She turned to leave when screams suddenly erupted all around her. People scattered, some running for the open door, others dodging under tables and behind chairs. It all happened too quickly for her to know who had knocked her flat on the ground, gunshots firing milliseconds before she hit the floor hard. She felt terror grip her as her brain recognized the loud bangs as a gun at work. There was a strong body shielding her, InuYasha she hoped.
For a few seconds, everything was dead quiet, nobody daring to move. Her protector held her tightly as they both slowly eased up, looking for the shooter, ready to dodge the next bullet. InuYasha’s red kimono confirmed Kagome’s guess as they saw that the coast was clear. “W-what...what was that?” She asked, her body still shaking in shock and fear in the pit of her stomach. InuYasha sniffed the air, picking up the scent of blood... Wait...that scent, I know that scent... He unwillingly released his hold on Kagome, wishing there was some way to distract her, before she found what his Demonic side had traced. Someone was wounded, dieing. He couldn’t mistaken that scent of death...
Kagome looked around, nervously. Something wasn’t right. She saw people begin to crawl from their hiding places, some fleeing out of the concert room, others coaxing the terrified to release a table or chair leg they clung to. That’s when she heard someone yelling for help. “There’s someone bleeding over! Call for help, she’s been shot!”
Kagome was there in a heartbeat, pushing and shoving to help whoever needed it. She suddenly went weak in the knees, her face becoming a ghostly white when she saw Ayume lying one the ground, covered in her own blood. She was crying, her body shuddering in shock, terror and pain clouding her eyes. “AYUME!”
Shift...
Kimi shrieked a bloody cry, launching from a dozing Sango’s shoulder in pure fright. The energy had hit so suddenly, so powerful, everyone felt it pulse through their veins. Kimi screamed, darting through the dark hut that sheltered them from the night in Kaede’s village. She threw herself against the walls, pain and confusion gripping her mind, making her blind. But it wasn’t her actions, that wasn’t her pain, confusion, or energy. ‘Kagome!’
Something was terribly wrong. Kagome was separated by Time, there was no possible way to hold a connection to the Priestess. Sango was on her feet and out the door in a second, Kaede and Miroku right behind her. “Did you feel that energy? It was so strong, I felt it pulse through me...Kimi’s gone crazy. What’s going on?” Sango watched as Kirara began growling, her fur standing on end, tiny fangs beginning to poke from her mouth. She burst into flames, roaring and hissing threats. “Even Kirara felt it.”
What everyone didn’t know, what they couldn’t sense, what they couldn’t feel deep in their bones, was the deep growl echoing from the pit of a black chamber. Two watery blue eyes opened from a deep slumber, a slumber that had lasted for so long...Chains rattled, pulled to the length of their limit, an irritated rumble gathering into a growl of fury, claws slicing out into the air, fangs bearing, clamping down on what stole freedom from its grasp. She was awake!
Kirara hissed again and bolted away to the Well, Kimi way ahead of her. Sango called out to her Demon companion, confused at Kirara’s behavior. “Let’s follow them, animals are more sensitive to what’s around them than we are. They may have a clue to this mystery.” Miroku spoke up, nodding to Sango as he jogged after the Two-Tail and bird. Sango silently agreed. They ran through the woods, finally coming to the Bone Eater’s Well where Kirara sat with her head cocked to one side, staring down into its mouth. Kimi was perched on the closest branch possible, unable to keep still.
The Valker had awakened. The pulsing energy that had gripped everyone, had stirred the Leader of the Elements from slumber. She was calling, roaring and pulling at her chains in the darkness. The waters were flowing with speed and strength, provoked by her angry growls. Kagome had done it, somehow, someway, she had reached out, her energy had exploded, tapping into the key of her power. How? Why?
“The Well?” Sango said in a clueless voice. “Maybe this has something to do with Kagome. Look at Kimi, she’s trembling. Isn’t she connected to Kagome?” Sango nodded at Miroku’s question, agreeing with his theory. “Then we’ll wait for her and InuYasha to come back...Let’s hope they come back soon. I’m worried about Kagome. She was upset when she left.”
Miroku sat against a tree and began praying, Sango sitting beside him, deep in thought. For some reason, her mind was rushing back to her brother, the loss of her village and family fresh in her mind. Miroku’s hand on her shoulder startled her. She looked up at him, glad that the cover of night hid her blush. She chose not to slap him, he wasn’t being a letch at the moment...and the gesture was comforting. How she wished he would change his womanizing ways. It hurt when he chased after a girl, groping their rear end and getting a kick out of it. Now why am I thinking about something stupid like that? He’s just a letch, a womanizing monk who...!...-Slap-...The nerve of him! Can he never be civilized! Always with the grabbing!
She jumped up to sit by Kirara, glaring at Miroku who was smiling and rubbing the red hand mark on his cheek. “Good night Monk!” She spat. Miroku sighed at another failed attempt at wooing Sango. He just couldn’t understand why she always slapped him. Most girls liked his friendliness. Hmm. She’s so beautiful when she’s mad...I bet she’d slap me if I ever said that to her face. He gave up and began to pray again for the safe return of their friends and for Sango’s heart. He knew she liked him. Even though she tried to hide it, she had a huge jealousy flaming around her whenever a young lady came prancing by. The though made him laugh to himself. One day she’d understand. One day.
Shift...
Kagome woke from another fitful sleep. There was the familiar sound of knocking on her locked door, but she only shook her head, tears filling her already swollen eyes. “Go away!” She yelled through her sobs for the millionth time. She could hear her mothers pleading voice begging her to come out and eat. Kagome had no use for food, no will to care. Her life meant nothing to her, the pain inside so great it hurt to breathe. She buried her face deep in her pillow and cried herself back to sleep like every other hour since they had come home.
Kagome’s mother shook her head helplessly. It had been this way for five days straight. Kagome had locked herself in her room in denial the second they had gotten home, pushing out everyone around her. She could be heard sobbing in the middle of the night, but she refused the comfort offered to her. InuYasha had done everything he could to help, holding her when they had driven home from what was once a family reunion. The place had been filled with police cars, fire trucks and three ambulances, red lights flooding the streets and open windows.
Ms. Higurashi looked down at the pained Half-Demon sitting against Kagome’s bedroom door. He was staring at the floor, his mind in another place, miles away. He was hurting like Kagome, she could read it by his slumped shoulders and dropped ears. Seeing a human die wasn’t the cause, even though it was Kagome’s best friend who had killed. He was hurt and confused at being pushed away, locked out, unable to get to Kagome in any way. She had locked both the door and window to keep everyone out...including him.
Kagome’s mother went down to bring him something to eat. When InuYasha had discovered his way barred from Kagome’s room, he had planted himself at her door, not budging for anything. “Here...you need to eat.” InuYasha blinked and looked up at the bowl of steaming vegetables held out to him. He took the offer silently and nodded his thanks, his heart not set on food like it usually was at this time of day. She left him then, seeing that at least someone was eating supper. Sota and Gramps had only picked and played with their food...no one had an appetite these days.
InuYasha rolled his bowl around, watching its contents bob in the spiced, hot liquid. Kagome’s soft cries reached his ears. She was awake again, remembering that day at the reunion. He wanted to brake down the door and run to her side, to hold her, comfort her. He hated it when she cried, it tore him up to see her hurting.
Everything was finally mended, she was smiling and laughing like before...and it had to be ruined. All the joy washed away like a flash-flood...She’ll die if she finds out who did it... the person who murdered her friend. No...that wasn’t a human, it was a Demon. I know it. That weapon he had used...what was it? I’ve never seen it before. It was loud and now I know it’s deadly like a sword...She would have been hurt or killed too...I felt something hit my back. When I jumped to shield her, it hit the back of my kimono and was repelled by it, but I still felt the sting. What did that man call it? A...bullet? There were three shots that I heard before Tioen took off. Ayume was in front of us a few tables down...Tioen must have been aiming for Kagome, but Ayume got in the way and took the main hits. I could have blocked the blows, the girl could have lived! Damn! I wish I knew ahead of time! I should have stopped that monster when I had the chance! Kagome that was not your cousin...he was a Demon in disguise, he led you there to kill you. How could I have been so stupid? It was all a trap, a lie to lure us away...
The sobbing wasn’t stopping. He had tried to give Kagome her space, giving her time to mourn her loss, but he was reaching his limits. He stood and knocked on the door, receiving the same response that she had yelled earlier. He tried the handle, but it was still locked. “Kagome open up.” InuYasha got no answer. Then I’ll open it myself or break the door down trying. He grasped the handle and, with some force, he twisted it until a clean snap answered him. The handle gave way to his strength and fell to the floor, leaving a hole in the door as it slowly opened, having nothing to lock it to the frame.
Kagome heard the door creak as InuYasha crossed the room to her bedside. She felt gentle hands wrap themselves under her and she was pulled away from the bed. InuYasha held her tightly as she continued to sob on him. He stroked and kissed her hair to calm her even though that notion was useless. She clamped her fingers on his kimono, afraid she would die if she let him go. The image of Ayume was haunting her soul, it scared her and shredded her tangled mind to pieces. To watch in helplessness as paramedics gathered around, shouting orders, strange instruments and bags thrown everywhere while her best friend struggled to breathe…the memory made her shudder and her sobs wouldn’t stop.
I couldn’t help her, I watched her die in front of me and I couldn’t comfort her, couldn’t save her! She was so scared, so pale and…Why…?... I want to know why this happened to me. Why is everything falling apart? Ayume I didn’t mean to hurt you, I feel like it was my fault…They were aiming for me, not you, it was an accident! Who did it? Who tried to kill me? Who murdered my best friend? I’ll get to the bottom of this, one way or another. I’ll avenge you Ayume! I’ll kill them, whoever they are!
Kill a human? Was she that terrible to threaten such things? Why not? Ayume’s life was taken by another who would have taken hers. He didn’t deserve to live. The police would hunt him down, they had to, and the murderer would pay dearly. She’d make sure of it. She’d fight to the end until Ayume was avenged.
Kagome coughed, trying to stop her flowing tears. She was sick of crying, but it seemed the only thing her body would allow. Memories of her childhood, the games she had played with all her friends, the birthdays, the school crushes, leaning on a friend’s shoulder when you needed comfort... They were all gone. Now that she thought about it, her relationship with everyone here in her own world was going down hill.
She was almost a stranger in her own home...Sota seeming to grow an inch every time she came back from the Feudal Era. At school everything had changed. She couldn’t remember half the names of her classmates and the geometry work...no, ALL the work...she was so far behind, none of it made any sense. She might as well start the whole year over. Then there was Yuka and Eri. Now she was fighting with them. And Ayume was gone... It was like she didn’t belong here.
Kagome managed to quite her sobs, welcoming InuYasha’s comfort, wishing she had had it sooner. But that was her fault. She had been too stubborn and selfish to think about everyone else’s feelings. InuYasha pulled her chin up to look at her. She was a wet mess, her hair tangled and her eyes swollen and red. “Kagome, I’m sorry...” He said, trying to dry her tears. Kagome held back the endless flood of salt water at his words. It wasn’t his fault. “For...what? You didn’t...do anything...wrong.” She sniffed. She suddenly felt sleepy. It made her wonder why crying always made her drowsy.
InuYasha kissed her forehead and gave a sad smile in answer. He dare not say anything, it would crush her. He scooped her up gently and laid her back on the bed, crawling under the covers with her. Kagome didn’t protest, she wanted him to stay, no matter what her mother might think. She snuggled against him, trying to blot out the nightmares that had consumed her the past few nights. His presence oddly enough drove them away into the dust. But that was a good thing. “Get some rest Kagome. I’m not leaving without you.” InuYasha whispered to her, holding her close. Kagome didn’t answer, her breathing patterns softening as sleep took her. He willed himself to sleep with her, ready to wake if she woke up crying again. Please let this nightmare end!
Shift...
Ms. Higurashi took a warm cup of tea up to Kagome’s room, greeted by a dozing Half-Demon settled on the sill of an open window. Kagome was asleep, her body twitching as if in a bad dream. Not much had changed in the passing week. But change had to come, for everyone. Kagome needed to leave this place for a while. Staying here wasn’t improving anything, it was only making things worse. Kagome was beginning to snap at InuYasha for no reason, it was a wonder that he didn’t just get up and leave like he usually did. Kagome’s mother set the glass cup next to the alarm clock and looked around for an empty yellow book bag, finding it thrown in a corner with a bunch of other bags from the reunion. I’ll get her stuff packed for her.
A few hours later she came back to find the cup empty and Kagome buried deep under her blankets. InuYasha was staring out the window, fully awake but still exhausted from all the trauma. “InuYasha.” He blinked at her voice and pulled his wandering mind back to the present. “InuYasha I want you to take her back with you. Kagome needs to get away from here. Take her to the Feudal Era, some place far and new to her eyes. Get her mind off this place and the reunion.” InuYasha sighed, looking over at Kagome sound asleep. That’s all she did everyday. Cry and sleep, with InuYasha trying to shove food down her throat when she refused to eat. He understood and nodded.
“I have her stuff packed, it’s by the Well. Did she drink the tea or dump it?” “I watched her drink it all. I don’t think she wanted to fight me this time...I think she hates me.” “No, she’s just upset. I put something to make her sleep in the tea so she won’t wake for a while, that way there won’t be arguing.” Ms. Higurashi left to find a light blanket, coming back with one and nodded to InuYasha who stood and stretched. She helped him get Kagome onto his back and wrapped the blanket around her to keep her warm. It was getting cooler everyday outside with summer over.
InuYasha walked quietly down the stairs, passing Sota and Gramps who were sitting at the table. He ignored them and headed to the shrine that housed the Bone Eater’s Well, finding Kagome’s yellow book bag stuffed full with who knew what. He froze when he saw Kagome’s bow, the one he had given her for her birthday. How did her mother know about the bow? Feh. What a stupid question. How could she not know about it, look at the size of it. Plus it’s from my time.
Ms. Higurashi followed him with Sota by her side. The boy looked sick like Kagome, his eyes red and irritated from crying. “Are you taking sis back with you?” He asked quietly, staring up at InuYasha with Kagome asleep on his back. InuYasha nodded, grabbing the bag and bow as he stepped onto the Well’s edge. “If I could take you there too, I would. But that’s not possible...sorry kid. I’ll take care of Kagome for you, I promise.” He said that to both mother and son, trying to cheer them up a little.
Kagome’s mother put on a smile, even though it was hard to do. She waved as InuYasha dove into the Well, once again disappearing into the dimensions of time with Kagome on his back. She heard gasps behind her and turned to see Eri and Yuka at the shrine entrance, their mouths hanging open. Yuka ran over to the Well and peered into the gloomy hole, only seeing the empty bottom. “She wasn’t lying...They disappeared! Eri! Kagome vanished with that guy, look, it’s empty! She was telling the truth...and only Ayume believed her...”
Eri looked over at Kagome’s mother, confused. They had come to see how Kagome was doing and to apologize for the fight they had started. Everyone was feeling the effects of Ayume’s murder, now was not the time to have petty arguments. “You know about InuYasha?” Ms. Higurashi asked. She motioned them to follow her back to the house. If Kagome had told them about InuYasha and if they had just seen the two of them vanish to the Feudal Era, then it would be a good idea to explain everything. It might even pull everyone’s mind from depression for a while.
“Well...Kagome tried to tell us something...but we didn’t believe her and blew it off as a prank or story. She got mad at us and then Ayume... We came to apologize.” Yuka said, her eyes watering up. “Come on in girls, we need to talk. I have some cup cakes baking in the oven for everyone.” Kagome’s mother ushered them inside, asking Sota to set the table for their guests. She glanced back at the shrine and said a silent prayer for her daughter who was now in the Feudal Era. She prayed for everything to be all right, that this mess would clear up soon. “Please keep her safe InuYasha.”
Shift...
“Sango! It’s Kagome and InuYasha, here they come!” Shippo called from his comfy spot on Kaede’s roof. He had been looking out for his friends ever since Kimi had had her screaming fit several nights ago. He could see InuYasha running in his direction, Kagome on his back...was she sleeping? Why was she covered with a blanket in this lovely weather? Sango and Miroku heard Shippo’s warning and went out to meet the Half-Demon and Miko. InuYasha hushed them and pointed to the hut. “Get packing now, I won’t wait more than five minutes. We’re heading north, hurry up.”
“Why in such a hurry? Kagome looks exhausted, you should have let her rest before coming back, what happened?” Miroku poured his questions on InuYasha who said nothing. Sango was silent, seeing the grimness in InuYasha’s eyes. She ran inside and gathered her things together, stuffing Miroku’s stuff in the same sack. Shippo joined everyone on the ground, confused by the odd behavior. “How come you want to leave so suddenly?” InuYasha only growled. “Are you ready yet Sango?” “Yeah, here Miroku. Lets go. Oh wait. What about Kagome’s bike?” “Leave it. That annoying thing will only get in the way.” Miroku shook his head at InuYasha’s comment. “Ok, but you’ll be the one getting ‘Sat’ in the end.”
Shippo hopped up onto the Monk’s shoulder, peering at the sleeping Kagome. He wondered what all the fuss was about. “I want to travel as far as possible tonight, I’m running to the limit so you might want to ride Kirara.” InuYasha stated as he turned to make a run for it. Kirara transformed at the sound of her name, allowing Sango and Miroku to mount her back. Kimi was nowhere in sight. She had vanished days ago.
“Wait for us InuYasha!” Shippo called out as Kirara jumped skyward with her burden. Everyone was puzzled, but kept quiet as they headed north, following the leader, InuYasha. The Half-Demon leapt high into the air, hoping the wind wouldn’t wake Kagome on his back. Kagome unconsciously felt the chill of the licking breeze and huddled closer to him, her hands gripping the back of his kimono and her face dipping into the pocket formed by his back and her rippling blanket.
InuYasha felt pain inside as he thought about the days ahead. After the reunion, Kagome had been snapping at him for no reason. She acted as if he had been apart of the murder, pushing him away, ignoring his presence, she had even yelled at him to get out of her room at one point. Why was she upset at him? Why did she suddenly hate him? What kept me from just coming back here without her?
I don’t understand. No...I do understand. I know what it feels like to lose someone...I hated everyone around me, blamed others for what had happened to mother. I pushed out everything, wanting to forget it all. And I didn’t want anyone’s sympathy...That was the only thing I had left, my pride, though I doubt anyone cared about my pain or whether I lived or died. I don’t think Kagome’s ever lost a friend before...or anyone for that matter...I wonder what happened to her father. She doesn’t talk much about her past now that I think about...But I won’t think about the past. The past is painful and should be left alone. I just hope this plan works. I want to see Kagome smiling again, I want the old Kagome back, the one that loved me, the one that cared... My Kagome.
