Chapter 1 – Who doesn’t like mint?

Just one more herb, come on, it’s got to be around here somewhere... Ah yes! Here it is!

It was a seemingly innocent afternoon, but looks could be deceiving. Out in the tranquil herb fields that grew beside Kaede’s village, our favorite hentai monk was up to no good. Miroku had learned at an early age, from lecherous men with lecherous purposes, how to brew a love tea, and he had discovered not long ago that all of the necessary ingredients were available almost literally under his nose. Kaede already stocked many of them, though the elderly miko would never think to use the herbs for that particular purpose. Singularly, they had many other uses, but when mixed together just right, the collection could be used to make this special brew. It was said to awaken the heart’s hidden desires, not casting anyone under a mind control spell, per se, but rather, unlocking the feelings they had been keeping hidden all along. You couldn’t use this potion to bed a woman who honestly didn’t want you, but it sure made inhibitions disappear in a hurry, if she were merely worried about propriety. Miroku had never before felt like he needed such a potion, but with the cold shoulder Sango had been giving him as of late, he suddenly found that he was willing to try anything. If she cared nothing for him, as she often claimed was the case, then nothing would happen. But, if her heart truly called out to him, then she would no longer be able to hide it. He hoped, if all went well, that come morning they will have bedded, and she’d be his…knock on wood…pun intended!

Damn, it tastes too strange, she’ll notice... he realized in worry, giving the brew a quick sip, not that he needed any help. I know, I’ll add mint... he decided then, reaching for the flavoring in question. Everybody loves mint, don’t they?

“Ready to head down to the hot spring, Kagome-chan?” Sango asked with anticipation present in her voice.

Hot baths were so few and far between, and while there wasn’t really a hot spring within what anyone would consider walking distance to Kaede’s village, with Kirara’s assistance the nearest spring was close enough to make the trip worthwhile.

“Just a second Sango-chan, let me grab our canteens.” was Kagome’s response, as she checked her bag to make sure she had all of the necessary supplies.

Suddenly, Miroku appeared before them, acting more helpful than usual as he handed Kagome said canteens with a friendly, “Here you are, ladies.”

“Thank you, Miroku-sama.” Kagome acknowledged with a surprised, but pleased smile.

“Not at all, Kagome-sama.” was the monk’s reply, adding, “And I’ve already taken the liberty of filling them for you.”

“You have?” asked Sango, raising a suspicious brow. He must really be trying to get back on her good side.

“Why yes…” He replied, his face as innocent as ever, which was another clue that he was up to no good. “Instead of water, I have mixed a relaxing herbal tea for you both. Just something pleasant to help your muscles relax and ease your mind.” While this was true of Kagome’s tea, he obviously failed to mention the special ‘bonus’ ingredients added to Sango’s mix.

“Hey thanks!” the miko beamed, truly touched by the gesture.

“Not at all.” he replied with a smile, bidding the pair safe journey as they headed off on Kirara.

It had been a rough past few days. The inu-tachi had battled one too many youkai, or so it seemed, and everyone’s muscles were sore and aching as a result, putting the group in less than favorable spirits. Sango had been a bit snappy at Miroku as of late, and she felt badly about it, honestly, but since Kagome had been just about as snappy towards Inuyasha, the taijiya felt a little bit better knowing that it wasn’t just her. She wasn’t the only one suffering the ill effects of nonstop fighting. Honestly, as she thought about it, Sango found herself feeling a bit sorry for Kagome. At least she had been trained for such a lifestyle since early childhood, but poor Kagome...her body wasn’t used to such continuous activity: hunt, travel, fight and camp; hunt, travel, fight and camp; hunt, travel, fight and camp...it was good to finally be back at Kaede’s, even if only for one night.

They had arrived back at the village late that morning, and since Kagome was temporarily out of school for something called
‘summer break’, the miko wasn’t going to be needing the next few days off for her studies. She had already returned home briefly to let her family know that she was well and to restock their supplies, and so now after one night at Kaede’s they planned on hitting the road again come morning.

“Ahhh, this feels soooo much better…” Sango sighed with relief as she sank her aching muscles into the steaming pool. “Kagome-chan,” she asked after a moment, “Could you pass me my tea?”

“Sure thing Sango-chan.” the miko replied, a pleasant smile gracing her lips. Kagome, too, had quickly begun to lose her earlier irritability once she had submerged herself within the soothing spring. Reaching for their tea, she tossed her friend the thermos she’d given her from her time. They worked so much better than gourds or leather pouches, and she had puchased one for everybody, each with a different pattern so they could tell them apart - which had subsequently made Miroku’s job much easier earlier that afternoon.

After a short-lived moment of silence, the miko’s attention was captured when she suddenly heard her taijiya friend make a loud, exaggerated gagging sound, and looking up, she saw Sango glaring at her thermos in such a fashion that she couldn’t help but to bust up laughing. Sango gave her a dry look, and after a another moment Kagome managed to get her giggling under control long enough to ask her what was wrong.

“This is mint tea, that’s what.” Sango answered, making another face.

Grinning in amusement, Kagome shook her head before taking a sip of her own tea, only to glance across at her friend in surprise when she discovered that her tea lacked that particular flavoring.

“That’s strange. Mine isn’t mint.” she confessed.

The taijiya merely snorted.

“That isn’t strange at all.” she stated with a knowing look. “He was probably trying to make mine extra special to show his favor. Too bad he didn’t know I can’t stand the taste of mint.” Still... she added in her mind, I suppose it’s the thought that counts...

“Well, I like mint just fine.” Kagome stated then. “Wanna trade?”

“Thank you.”

“No problem.”

Twenty minutes later...

“Kagome-chan, are you feeling all right?” Sango asked with genuine worry in her voice. The future-born miko’s face seemed much more flushed than normal, even for sitting in a hot spring, and was it her imagination or was Kagome breathing heavier than usual?

“Yeah, I’m…fine…” Kagome answered slowly, her head starting to spin as she fanned herself with a hand above water. “All of a sudden I’m just really hot.” she added, sitting up straighter to pull part of her upper body out of the water.

“Well, then perhaps it’s time we head back to the village.” Sango suggested. “Your body is probably protesting its recent mistreatment.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right. I mean, I don’t feel sick or anything.” the miko stated, feeling her forehead with her dry hand to check for fevor. “I guess dunking overworked muscles into hot water is going to make them feel hotter than usual. Still feels good, though...” Laughing a bit, Kagome agreed that she would probably be feeling the effects of their recent long-haul come morning. Little did she know that come morning, she would have much more important things to worry about than any lingering stiffness in her legs due to overexertion.

Sango, meanwhile, was already allowing her thoughts to wander as she climbed out of the water alongside her friend. After finally having a chance to relax, she found herself feeling much better, and she decided in that moment that she would apologize to Miroku for her earlier temper. Calling Kirara from where the fire-neko had been doing her rounds in the surrounding woods to ensure their safety, the girls climbed atop their feline steed and were back amongst their companions shortly thereafter. Issuing forth said apology, Miroku eagerly accepted, neither the taijiya nor miko noticing the extra twinkle in his eyes as they passed him to enter Kaede’s hut. The elderly miko was already in the process of preparing that evening’s meal, which Kagome immediately offered to help her with, the meat augmenting that night’s stew courtesy of Inuyasha. They had run out of Kagome’s ‘ninja food’ two days prior and had spent the last wing of their journey surviving on nothing but fish, so earlier that morning while Kagome had been restocking their supplies in her time, the inu-hanyou had decided to treat everybody by sniffing out a large wild pig. There would be enough leftovers to ensure that Kaede ate unusually well for several days to come, but he considered it a payment of sorts for the old woman so willingly allowing them all to take over her home from time to time.

“Thank you, Inuyasha.” Kagome murmured quietly with a gentle smile on her lips as she handed him his bowl of stew. Her tone bespoke of her own silent apology for how she had previously been acting, as well as her genuine gratitude for his subliminal show of kindness towards Kaede in his oversized catch.

“Keh.” he replied with a light dusting of pink on his cheeks, grateful she didn’t say anything more as she turned back to get her own stew.

“This is excellent, Kaede-sama.” Sango complimented after tasting the stew.

“I concur.” Miroku chimed in.

Kagome didn’t say anything because she was too busy eating, humming out a mumbled “MmmHmm” in the affirmative in between bites.

Guess she was hungry... Inuyasha snickered to himself, never before having seen her exhibit quite so much appetite, though he supposed it made sense under the circumstances.

As the group all settled down for bed for the night, Inuyasha excused himself and headed for the nearby tree line, so that he could keep his usual vigil over the entire village. Well, he was really only concerned about the occupants of Kaede’s hut, but they would be better protected if he had a broad enough vantage to assess the approach of potential threats from all directions. Kagome, still finding herself feeling unusually warm and silently berating herself for having apparently soaked in the hot spring for longer than she should have, opted to leave her skirt on rather than changing into her flannel pajama bottoms. Summers in the Sengoku jidai were already on the hot side as it was, and without air conditioning, Kagome seriously doubted she would get cold during the night in her skirt and tank top. Shedding the long sleeves of her school shirt definitely made her feel better, though it was still warmer than she would have preferred.

Oh well, not like there’s all that much I can do about it... she told herself, settling down the best she could.

Miroku, meanwhile, did his best to nonchalantly set up his bedding alongside Sango’s, without making any sort of lewd commentary.

Is he...is he actually going to be a gentleman, and show genuine affection?

*Rub*

“Hentai!”

*SLAP*

I guess not...

Shippou chuckled quietly to himself as he snuggled up against Kagome for the night, while Kirara merely rolled her eyes, settling herself against her mistress in a strategically protective position. The reverberating echo of the slap even reached Inuyasha’s ears at the edge of the forest, the hanyou merely shaking his head as he muttered to himself about how certain lechers would never learn. Said lecher, believing Sango to have ingested his love tea, which he was quite certain had been brewed correctly, sighed dejectedly before resigning himself to the fact that the woman he loved apparently detested him as strongly as she claimed. For her part, Sango didn’t fail to notice Miroku’s brief and somewhat forlorn expression, but not believing the monk to have any measure of genuine feelings for her beyond mere physical attraction, she shrugged it off in that moment, thinking he was just pouting over her rejection of his advances. They each went to bed without any further words shared between them.

Shaking her head, Kaede knew it was not her place to interfere, though she certainly hoped those two would admit their feelings to each other sooner rather than later. Some muffled moaning reached her ears as sleep slowly consumed her, the sounds too vague to pull her mind back from its encroaching slumber, leaving Kagome to toss and turn uninterrupted.

*Kagome’s Dream* (deliberately switched to present-tense for effect)

It’s hot... She’s hot...

Where am I?

Looking around, she sees that she’s in the forest, but it’s on fire! The fire burns all around her, burning her flesh, yet it does not cause her pain. She feels nothing but the searing heat.

It’s so hot...

She is sweating now, so much so that the flames sizzle as they dance across her skin. Suddenly, Inuyasha is standing there before her. The fire does not burn him, his robes protecting his body from the all-consuming flames. Blinking, Kagome suddenly finds Inuyasha’s suikan drapped across her shoulders, protecting her from the fire. Its weight across her shoulders cools the heat she feels from the flames, and yet it does not. Looking back up to meet Inuyasha’s eyes, their gazes lock, as he stands topless before her. He is on fire now, like the forest around them, but it does not hurt him. He is on fire for her...the fire of passion. It burns them both from the inside out as they embrace, their bodies becoming one as the fire consumes their souls. The heat is overwhelming as they make love, his strong body pounding into her relentlessly as she cries out his name...

*End Dream*

Kagome awoke with a start, her body drenched in sweat.

Whoa... she thought slowly, raising a hand to her frantically pounding heart. What was that? she questioned herself, having never before experienced one of ‘those’ types of dreams that was quite so...passionate.

Sure, she’d dreamt about being with Inuyasha like that before, several times in fact. It was only fitting that he would be the literal man of her dreams, considering he was the man she loved. But that dream...

Wow... she thought, her hand still resting over her pounding heart. I must be running a fevor after all, she thought then, feeling her forehead a second time.

She was hot all right, although it was decidedly a different kind of heat. A heat she soon recognized as an aftereffect courtesy of her dream, she acknowledged begrudgingly to herself. She felt the burning, the itching, the desire to be touched... At first, Kagome tried to just lie back down and ignore it, figuring that sleep would eventually find her again, but she couldn’t get comfortable. First, she kicked off the blankets, but she was still hot. Then, she gently, carefully separated herself from the slumbering kitsune who thankfully slept like a log, and she was still too hot. A couple of times unconsciousness did slowly start to consume her, but enough lucidity remained to angrily catch an independent hand relocating to where it shouldn’t at those times, no doubt in an attempt to recreate the more lively aspects of her recent dream. That wouldn’t do...

At least not here... she silently compromised then, figuring she probably wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep until she took care of her little problem, lest she risk taking care of it in her sleep, which could potentially make for an extremely embarrassing morning. Not something she would like to experience if it could be avoided.

Finally agreeing with herself that it was the only course of action left to try, the future-born-miko proceeded to quietly shimmy herself out of her bedding, tiptoeing silently across Kaede’s hut, which she found remarkably hard to do on such shaky legs. Still, she managed to slip out into the night undetected by the hut’s other occupants, the images from her dream tattooed to her brain.
