Maybe Tomorrow
Chapter 4
Inuyasha steadied the girl, who had just barreled into him full force, which was awfully hard considering her size. The top of her head barely reached his shoulder. Looking down at her, he realized she seemed familiar to him. She was looking at him in shock.Chapter 4
He could feel her start to tremble under his fingertips. Was she that frightened? He had caught her. She shouldn’t still be afraid, unless she was afraid of him. But that didn’t make sense, they didn’t even know each other. Still he couldn’t shake the feeling that he knew her from somewhere.
She was still staring at him. “What’s your problem, wench?! First, you nearly knock me down. Now, you’re looking at me like I’m some kind of monster that’s about to eat you!”
The girl gasped at his sudden outburst. Okay, maybe he had been harsh, but she was starting to make him feel uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry,” she managed to squeak out. “I-I was afraid you were very angry with me. C-Can you please let me go now?”
Realizing he was still holding the girl by her upper arms, he let go as if he had been burned. “Sorry,” he mumbled, rubbing the back of his head and looking away in embarrassment. He could feel the blush spreading across his face. Damn it, I’m acting like a school boy. “Are you all right? I didn’t hurt you, did I?” He couldn’t quite meet her eyes, so he settled for looking just over her shoulder.
“No, I’m fine. Thank you.”
Forgetting his embarrassment for a moment, he looked into her soft brown eyes. Her cheeks were also slightly reddened. She seemed extremely flustered for some reason. It’s actually kind of cute, he thought, as he watched the blush slowly spread across her face.
“Are you sure you’re all right?” he asked again. She was acting so strangely, but so was he. “Do you need any help? You seemed to be in a hurry to get somewhere.”
The girl began stammering. “Uh-Actually-Um. I was just-Uh. I was looking for the ladies’ room,” she finally managed to blurt out. Much to his amusement, her face began to turn a deeper shade of pink. He laughed softly at her embarrassment.
“Okay, that makes sense. The women’s restrooms are in the Baby Department. I could show you, if you’d like me to.” What? What am I saying?!
“No!” she replied, quickly, “No, thank you. I’m fine. I’m sorry I ran into you like that. Thanks for your help, but I’ve really got to go now.”
Quickly, she took off in the direction he had indicated and before he could say another word she was gone. No wait! Don’t go. He started to follow, though why he couldn’t figure out, when he was distracted by loud voices. They were coming from the direction of his department’s desk. Glancing once more after the girl with the hopes of catching a glimpse of her and not finding what he was looking for, he took off to investigate the source of the raised voices.
Kagome mortified beyond belief, rushed as quickly as she could to the ladies’ restroom. I can’t believe I did that. I acted like such a fool! He’ll only remember me as that freak girl who nearly knocked him down and then couldn’t put two words together to make a coherent sentence. Oh, my god, how embarrassing! The ladies’ room. I can’t believe I asked him that. I am such an idiot! My one chance and I blew it. I’ll never be able to look him in the eyes again.
Finding her way inside the restroom, she quickly walked up to a sink and proceeded to splash her heated face with cold water. Pulling out some paper towels from the dispenser she dried her face off and began to study her reflection in the mirror. It was a decent face with large brown eyes, a straight nose and a chin that was just a little too pointed for her liking. Her high cheekbones still carried a faint blush. She continued studying herself a few moments longer, slowly allowing herself to relax.
“Well, I don’t have any hopes of getting his attention now after that artful display,” she said to herself. “What will Sango say when I tell her what a fool I made of myself?”
At the thought of her best friend, her eyes widened in alarm. “Oh, no! Sango. I just left her there. That means I have to go back there and risk the chance of seeing him again, after making such a fool of myself.”
Realizing she was holding the edges of the sink in a vise grip, she eased her hold on the white porcelain. When she met her reflection’s gaze in the mirror, she was startled by the tears she saw there. She hadn’t even realized that she had been crying. The truth of the matter struck her as odd. “This man, I don’t even know him, and yet I can’t imagine never seeing him again,” she said softly, “I want to see him again. No matter how stupid I feel right now, I want to see him again. Today, tomorrow and every day after that, I want to see him.”
Leaning over the sink with her folded arms supporting her chin, she allowed the tears to flow unbidden down her cheeks to drip into the basin.
When he reached his department, Inuyasha was surprised to find Miroku, sporting a large red hand print on his face, nose to nose with a tall brunette. The woman’s cheeks were flushed red in anger and she was jabbing her index finger hard into Miroku’s chest.
He had only one guess as to what had happened. Miroku was infamous for his wandering hands.
The damn idiot is going to lose his job if he isn’t more careful.
“What in the hell is going on here?” he yelled, startling them both.
The woman turned her head so fast, her high ponytail swung around and hit Miroku in the face. Her finger paused in its path and then turned to point in Inuyasha’s direction. He watched as some strange emotion flitted across her face.
“Oh, you’re –!” she said.
“Do I know you?” he asked.
She was staring at him in wide eyed wonder. Why is everyone staring at me today?!
“No, I’m sorry. It’s nothing,” she replied, shaking her head. “I was just confused for a moment.”
Miroku had yet to move from his position. His gaze had never wavered from the woman in front of him. What is wrong with him? Is he spaced out or something?
“What is going on here?” Inuyasha asked Miroku again.
Before Miroku could make a sound, the young woman was again poking him in the chest and vehemently exclaiming, “This jerk grabbed my ass! I should have him charged with sexual harassment!”
Inuyasha quickly intervened before the situation got of hand again. “You’ll have to excuse my friend, miss. “He has a slight problem with keeping his hands to himself. I’m sure it won’t happen again. Right, Miroku?” He pointedly glared at the debaucher.
Miroku, looking thoroughly chastised, nodded his head in agreement. “Yes, I’m terribly sorry. I don’t know what I was thinking. It really was just an accident.”
The girl peered at him skeptically. “Well, I guess, if it was an accident.” Then shaking her head decidedly, she held her hand out to him. “My name is Sango.”
He accepted her hand gracefully and started to place a kiss on her knuckles. He thought better of it when he saw her glaring at him, so instead he merely bowed politely. “I am Miroku Houshi and I am honored to make your acquaintance.”
Sango blushed slightly at his gallantry and quickly removed her hand from his grasp. Inuyasha rolled his eyes at Miroku’s ridiculous display. Does the man never quit?!
“Great. Now that it’s settled, let’s get back to work,” he said to Miroku. He watched as Sango turned her head around looking expectantly. “Is something wrong?” he asked.
She frowned slightly. “I was just looking for my friend. She was just right here, but now I don’t see her anywhere.”
“Friend?” Inuyasha asked.
“Yes, she’s a little shorter than me and has black hair and brown eyes. Her name is Kagome. Have you seen her?”
His eyes widened when he recognized the description of the girl he had met earlier.
Kagome.
He nodded his head. “I think I may have run into her a few minutes ago. She said she was looking for the bathroom.”
“Oh, okay. I’ll just go look for her.”
“Would you like me to help you?” he heard himself say. Shit, why do I keep offering to take women to the bathroom?!
Sango looked at him strangely. “No, just point me in the right direction. I think I can manage it from there.”
“Sure, no problem,” he said and then gave her directions.
Without so much as a wave or a good-bye, Sango quickly headed off to find Kagome. Miroku watched the gentle sway of her hips as she left.
“She’s beautiful,” he mumbled to himself, completely forgetting that he wasn’t alone.
Inuyasha snorted, “She almost kicked your ass! If I hadn’t gotten here when I did, she probably would have had you arrested, idiot. Aren’t you ever going to learn to keep your hands to yourself?”
Miroku cradled his bruised cheek in his right hand. “It was worth the pain.”
“Come on. Let’s get back to work,” Inuyasha said, rolling his eyes. He was obviously a hopeless cause. Briefly, a picture of a brown-eyed girl flashed before his eyes. Yeah, she was definitely beautiful.
