“How did I get myself into this.”
Kagome found herself standing beside Sango‘s blue Jeep Wrangler in the middle of the store parking lot. Sango was already walking towards the front doors, unaware that Kagome wasn‘t beside her.
"Sango, this is crazy!" Kagome said, running to catch up to the tall brunette. "I don't even know this man."
"So get to know him, Kagome," Sango replied as she strode purposefully through the parking lot to the doors of the store, her high heels clicking against the cement. She seemed intent on getting inside as fast as possible. Once Sango’s mind was set on something; she was an unstoppable force.
I've got to stop her. I can't do this, Kagome thought. Panicking, she grabbed Sango's arm as she was about to open the door and step inside. "Please, Sango. I can't do this. What if he's a complete jerk or worse yet, he's perfect, but isn't interested in me. I don't think I could take that kind of rejection. At least this way he can be anything I want him to be."
"Oh, Kagome," Sango looked at her compassionately. "What if he is everything you ever dreamed of? What if he's the love of your life? Do you honestly want to give up before you've even tried? Besides, your beautiful, your kind and intelligent. What guy in his right mind wouldn’t want to date you? You’re never going to know if you don’t even try.”
Kagome's eyes welled up with tears as she contemplated Sango's questions. Slowly, she shook her head and wiped her eyes. "No, you're right. I'm just scared. I've never done this sort of thing before. And I‘m not beautiful."
“Yes, you are,“ Sango gently hugged her friend. "Look, you don't have to say anything to him today. We'll just silently observe him. Maybe we'll learn a little bit about his personality. Think of it as a reconnaissance mission.”
“Ugh,” Kagome wrinkled her nose in distaste. “You make it sound like were on a stake out!”
“Well, we are sort of. Aren’t we?”
“He’s not a criminal, Sango!”
“You don’t know that! He could be.”
Kagome’s eyes widened at the thought. “Don’t even say that! Suddenly, her face froze in horror. “Oh, my god! What if he is?” What will I do! I can’t fall for an ex-convict. What am I getting myself into?
Sango began laughing uncontrollably. “Geez, lighten up! I was only kidding, I seriously doubt that he has any sort of record. This isn‘t exactly Wal-mart, you know. Now quit thinking crazy. Everything will be fine, you‘ll see.”
Kagome glared at her reproachfully. “It wasn’t funny,” she said through gritted teeth. “I told you I couldn’t do this. I haven’t made it through the door and I’m already thinking the worst. Maybe we should wait until tomorrow? Yes, tomorrow would be much better.” Sango stopped her as she turned to leave. “I’m not going to let you chicken out on me. We’re already here and we are going to do this,” she said as she finally pushed Kagome through the door. “Besides, I want to get a look at this dream guy of yours.”
Kagome was walking along, scuffing her designer shoes on the floor like a petulant child. At least she’d managed to get Sango to slow down, instead of charging head long into “battle”.
Kagome sighed, “The Men’s Clothing section. That’s the whole problem, remember? What do we do if he asks to help us? Who are we supposed to be shopping for?”
Thoughtfully, Sango tapped her chin. “We could always say we’re looking for something for your father’s birthday.” Kagome stopped short at the statement. “I can’t say that. My father’s dead! I’d be lying to him. I can’t start out lying to a guy I may potentially date.”
“How about your little brother?”
“I said he works in the “Men’s Clothing”, not the “Little Boy’s Clothing”. Souta’s only eight years old and don’t say Grandpa, because he’d never be caught dead in that type of clothing. Believe me I’ve tried,” she muttered. This seemed like an impossible task to her, but Sango wasn’t about to let her leave until it was accomplished or she died of embarrassment.
“Well, then we’ll just say it’s my boyfriend we’re shopping for,” Sango replied.
“Fine, let’s just get this over with,” Kagome sighed as she was forcefully propelled forward.
They continued walking through the store, Kagome silently leading the way and wishing the ground would swallow her up, preferably, before they made it to there destination. I should never have told her about him. Then I would never have been in this situation. Of course, she is right. What if he really could be the love of my life?
As they were making their way past several rows of shoes, Sango suddenly stopped short. “Oh, what cute shoes! Remind me to come back and look at those,” she remarked as she picked up a pair of pink high heels. Kagome glared at her reproachfully. “What? Can I help it if I have a shoe fetish.”
“If I’m going to die from embarrassment or, worse yet, a broken heart, the least you can do is get it over with.”
“Fine, fine,” Sango said raising her hand in apology. “I was only trying to postpone your mortification. What better way to get your mind off of it than a new pair of shoes.”
Kagome gave her a small smile. Sango was so crazy sometimes. For a girl who wasn’t “girlie”, she sure did love her shoes. She had to have at least twenty pair in her closet, but she was always buying more. Sango was a definite shop-a-holic.
“Come on. You’ve finally got me talked into this. We’ll look at shoes latter. We’re almost there anyway, “ she said, motioning towards the back of the store.
Sango sighed regretfully as she put the shoes down. “You’re right.“ She gave one last longing look at the shoes as she followed Kagome down the main isle. “But I am coming back before we leave.”
Reaching over, Kagome looped her arm through Sango’s and gave it a slight squeeze. “Thanks”, she said softly.
“For what?” Sango asked quizzically.
“For doing this with me. For being such a good friend.”
“Your welcome. Now let go of me or your guy is going to think you‘re taken.”
“You sure do know how to ruin a good moment,” Kagome snorted as she let go of Sango’s arm.
“Kagome, I think I see someone. I’m not sure, because there is a big rack of clothes between us and the desk. Come on, let’s get closer.”
At that statement, Kagome latched onto Sango’s arm and attempted to burrow deeper out of sight at the same time. The brunette managed to catch herself before falling to the floor.
“I thought you wanted to see this guy?” Sango whispered harshly, as she wrenched her arm free from the frightened girl’s vice-like grip.
“I do, but can’t we do it from a distance?”
“I told you. I can’t get a good look at him. He’s behind a huge rack of clothes!”
“Shh! He’ll hear us.
At that moment, a man walked into her view.
“So what-- oh!” Sango pulled in a breath. “Kagome, if you don’t want him; can I have him?” She was staring at possibly the best looking guy she had ever seen. She wasn’t kidding! He’s gorgeous. Wait, what am I saying! This is Kagome’s guy. This is the first guy she’s talked about like this in a long time. I can’t be attracted to him, too. She still couldn’t help but stare at him.
“Hey, wait a minute! I saw him first!”, Kagome whispered harshly. Slowly, she peeked over Sango’s shoulder. Her face fell in disappointment. “Sango, that’s not him.”
The man, although handsome, was not the same man she had seen before. He wasn’t quite as tall and slimmer in build. His black hair was pulled neatly into a little ponytail at the back of his neck. He wore small golden hoops in his ears and was dressed nicely in a blue silk shirt and black slacks.
“That’s not him.” Kagome stared in disbelief. She nearly smacked herself in the forehead. Of course, how could I be so stupid. There would be more than one employee working in this department. Her chances of finding the same guy here were slim, unless she came here everyday, several times a day. It was likely they didn’t keep the same schedule from week to week.
“I’m so stupid.” Kagome did smack herself then. “It’s not him, Sango. I should have known I probably wouldn’t see him again. Sango?”
The girl was in a daze, still staring at the man who appeared to be inventorying the clothes and restocking.
Kagome poked her in the back. “Sango, snap out of it. I said that wasn’t him.”
“Huh? What? It isn’t?” She slowly blinked her eyes, her trance broken.
“Come on, let’s go home.”
Kagome turned and started to walk away. Before she could get very far, Sango stopped her with a hand upon her arm.
“Wait, don’t give up yet. Maybe he’s in the back or on lunch break. Let’s stay a few more minutes. After all, we just got here.”
“All right, but only for a few minutes.”
Kagome looked at the man who was still occupied with his job. Slowly, a devious smile spread across her face. If she couldn’t see him, maybe she could set Sango up. She could really use a good guy. Somebody who would appreciate her and not be turned off by her frankness. This was the first time she had ever seen Sango speechless. Especially, by a guy. Yes, it was definitely time for her to play matchmaker for her best friend.
“You’re only staying, because you want to check out this guy. He is kind of cute. Maybe you should go talk to him.”
Sango’s face flamed red as she spluttered, “ I can’t do that! I don’t even know him.” Immediately, regaining her composure she stated, “ Anyway, he’s not that cute. He’s a little on the scrawny side.
“Wait a minute. You wanted me to talk to a perfect stranger just seconds ago. Now you’ve found someone you’re attracted to and you’re not going to take your own advice. And don‘t lie to me, you couldn‘t keep your eyes off of him! You were in a daze and I couldn‘t get your attention for a full two minutes.”
“Don’t exaggerate. Besides, we’re here for you, not me. Remember!”, Sango stated rather loudly. “Now lets start looking, before we draw attention to ourselves.” She walked over to the nearest rack of men’s shirts and began flipping through them.
Perhaps, it was the spark in her eye which was fast turning into a deadly glint. This girl had fire and he badly wanted to see how close he could get before getting burned. Captivated by her, he stood stone still for several minutes watching the myriad of expressions crossing her face. My god, she’s gorgeous! He just had to get a closer look.
Cautiously, he approached the women. They seemed to be in a heated argument and were paying no attention to the man walking towards them. He stood silently, mere feet from the object of his interest.
Miroku was a ladies’ man and enjoyed the conquest more than the capture. But here was a woman who would surely give him a run for his money and keep the game interesting. She had a lovely figure to go along with that beautiful face. Long legs for miles, that curved into the most perfect backside he had ever seen.
Clearing his throat loudly, he tried to get their attention. “Excuse me, ladies. Can I be of service to you?”
They ignored him. Well, he knew of one way that never failed to get their attention. Without thought he extended his right hand and innocently reached for the girl’s shoulder. Or at least he meant to touch her shoulder, instead he found himself holding something deliciously soft and well rounded. Oops, a little too low!
“How did I get myself into this.”

Sango was trying to look inconspicuous, as they slowly walked through the men’s clothing. Which was hard considering Kagome was crouching behind her, trying to hide herself amongst the clothes as they walked. If they didn’t find the guy soon she was going to strangle the girl. Best friend or no best friend. The girl was acting ridiculous. It’s only a guy for crying out loud! Movement caught Sango’s eye from the left.“Kagome, I think I see someone. Miroku Houshi was so caught up in his work , he didn’t notice the two arguing women. When he finally did notice, he couldn’t help but stare at the beautiful woman with long chestnut hair pulled into a high ponytail. Her companion was also attractive, but not like this goddess. Something about this woman drew him like no other had before.b>

Kagome stopped rummaging through the clothes in front of her, when her friend suddenly stopped talking in mid sentence and let out a loud squeak. Turning to her with a slight frown marring her face she asked: “Sango, is everything all right?” She was surprised to see Sango’s face turning a bright shade of red. Suddenly and without warning the tomato-faced girl whirled around and landed an open-handed smack on the man standing behind her. Kagome gasped in surprise, “Sango, what has gotten into you?”
“You pervert! How dare you?! What makes you think you can go around grabbing women’s butts like that?!
Sango was screaming at the man who was currently sprawled on the floor with a dazed expression on his face. As Kagome watched in fascination and disbelief, the man picked himself up and began to try to apologize to Sango.
“My lady, I meant no harm. I was merely trying to get your attention to see if I could help you. I’m sorry if I offended you. You see, my hand has a mind of its own. I am terribly sorry, it is a cursed hand and I cannot seem to keep it under control,” the man said.
“That is no excuse for grabbing me like that. I should have you arrested for sexual harassment.”
Sango was turning to leave when the man quickly grabbed her hands and clasped them in his own. Shocked and embarrassed the girl’s cheeks were tinged pink. Kagome could see the struggle on her face, trying to decide if she wanted to continue listening to the man or make a scene again by laying him out unconscious on the floor. She could not hit him with her hands held so tightly in his, but there were other ways she could take him down. Kagome knew it was only a matter of time before Sango totally lost her temper.
“Please, if you would only allow me to make it up to you, “ he was saying. “ Perhaps I could take you to dinner and a movie. Maybe drinks at my house afterwards and then you could stay for breakfast.”
Kagome gasped at his implications. He sure works fast. She could see Sango visibly stiffen and she cringed as she saw the girl jerk her hands free, then she smacked him in the face. So much for him being Mr. Perfect. He may be cute, but he sure is depraved. She glanced around and noticed that a few people were gawking at them. Desperately, she tried to get Sango’s attention. “Sango, let’s go. People are starting to stare.”
However, Sango was too involved in giving the lecher a piece of her mind. He had a red handprint across the left side of his face and she could see a small bruise was already beginning to form. He was adamantly trying to express his regret for his forwardness, but Sango was having none of it. Growing bored with their argument and wanting to leave immediately with or without Sango, Kagome turned and preceded to rush out of the Men’s department, down the aisle and stumbled straight into a broad chest.
“Watch where your going, wench!“
Strong hands gripped her arms to prevent her from falling. Mumbling an apology and feeling a little put out with the “wench” comment, she looked up into violet eyes and the face of the man she had been looking for.
Author's Notes: Yes, its a cliffhanger! Sorry about this taking so long. I've been working on this for months now and I'm really tired of looking at it. I know where I want this fic to go, it's just getting it there that's the problem. I would work on it for a little bit then wouldn't touch it for weeks and I'd totally forget what I was trying to say. So I've decided it would be better to work on it a little bit each day even if it's just a word hear and there. At least then I won't forget what I'm doing and where I'm going. If you find any errors let me know.
