Magic is Just Around the Corner
Chapter Three: The Shadow In My Soul
“Kagome, do you know what happened with the hat? What were you talking about when you said, `it wouldn't listen, it went to the dark place' or something like that?” once again, Hermione was prodding in places she shouldn't. When would they learn that she would only talk when she wanted to? No demon with any amount of touchier could get her to talk; it was a proven fact, so why did they have a chance?
Sighing, Kagome simply ignored Hermione in favor of eating food. She only ate healthy, the three food groups, so she could stay in shape and wouldn't ware her body out. The last thing she needed was to get fat and die because she was to out of shape. That would be a humiliating death for anyone.
“Kagome are you even listening to me!” Kagome smirked when she heard the annoyed tone in Hermione's voice. Apparently the girl just realized she had no intention to listen to her when she asked personal questions. Something she hoped everyone would learn faster then her.
“I only listen to you when you do not ask questions you have no business asking. That way, I wont be forced to kill you for your rudeness.” Kagome stated, like she had killed many before for that same reason, even though she hadn't. It was just fun to watch the horror play on their faces when she told them that, she did sound very sincere after all.
The one thought that ran through everyone's head was, `this girl has ALL qualities of the houses stand equally out? I don't see the kindness anywhere…' they still had trouble believing that the dark, rude, cold, and mysterious girl Kagome was in all the houses.
“A short announcement, Quidich (sp?) trials will begin in two weeks! All second years to seventh years are permitted to tryouts!” Dumbledore announced happily after the room went silent for his speech. As soon as he sat down, excited squeals and murmurs broke out through the students as they discussed their excitement in joining the team.
“So I gather that this sport is very famous, I read a little about it. Maybe I shall…tryout?” Kagome pondered to herself slightly, not excited or scared, more curious then anything. If a sport could have both good and bad people wanting it, then it had to be something of importance, just like the Shikon no tama. Inwardly she cringe when she made this realization.
Kagome sat up from the table, suddenly feeling overcrowded. `There is to many happy faces in here, I can't take them right now!' she thought smothered as she continued her way to exit the building. No rules said she couldn't go for a little walk BEFORE hours, so that was precisely what she was going to do.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione watched Kagome get up and leave with confused eyes. They didn't here her murmur about the tryouts, but they did see the suddenly pain-stricken face she held upon leaving. Deciding it would be better if they followed her, they all got up and left the main hall as well, blue eyes through half moon glasses watching them all leave curiously.
/-----/
“Gosh, I am so pathetic. It's the hats fault, when it attacked that part of my brain it made me weak to these…emotions again!” Kagome seethed, feeling ashamed of herself for still morning over her friends, she thought she had gotten at least a bit past that. Not that she wanted to forget them, but she knew that she would make herself vulnerable for attack if she kept this up.
Sighing she made her way towards the field, subconsciously going there because it reminded her of the feudal era when she wanted peace and quite to think. Sitting down on the cold grass swaying in the cool breeze, Kagome looked up to the heavens. `Do they really hate me so much? What did I do to deserve this? Stupid question, I caused thousands to die when I broke that jewel, is this my ever lasting punishment?' she wondered silently to herself, thinking it would be a fitting punishment indeed. She was a horrible person.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione watched her with saddened eyes. When she was not around anyone, and not knowing she was being watched, you could really see a lot of the pain she hid under her cold mask of indifference. They all wished they could help, but the problem was she let no one in. Was she afraid? They didn't know.
Suddenly Kagome's face went back to the cool mask they all knew so well. She turned her head in their direction, causing them all to tense up. “It's rude to spy on people, I know your there Harry, Ron, and Hermione, come out now.” It was said in a calm fashion, but it didn't take a genius to here the underlining threat that clung thickly to her words.
“Hey Kagome!” Ron said cheerfully, trying in vein to cover up the fact that they were spying on her. “We were just passing by when we came upon you! Coincidence eh?” he laughed nervously, rubbing the backside of his neck all the while. Ron was a bad liar; Kagome didn't even have to check his aura to know that.
Giving him a cool stare, Ron halted in his tracks, “I do not like liars, and I would be incredibly stupid to fall for your falsehoods. I don't even need to check your aura to see if the truth is being told to me, you're just a plain bad liar.” Kagome stated coolly, causing Ron to blush in embarrassment and awkwardness.
Harry, seeing that this was only getting them into a deeper grave, stepped up, “Kagome, what are you doing out here all alone anyway? Its not safe.” Harry wasn't expecting the reaction he got, for he was pinned to the ground in ten seconds with a dagger to his throat by Kagome.
“I think I can take care of myself thank-you,” she stated in a devilish tone, causing goose bumps to run down Harry's back. `She sure is scary when she wants to be!' he thought horrified as he waited for the dagger to be removed from his neck.
Slowly and as swift as a cat, Kagome got off Harry and went back to the spot she was before. Harry let out a breath he didn't know he was holding when the weapon was no longer near his vital veins. `She is scarier then Voldermort sometimes!' the thought wasn't amusing the least bit; Voldermort is the most terrifying wizard alive and currently had his own body to wreck havoc with.
Shaking off the unwanted memories, Harry took a bold move and sat down beside Kagome. She tensed before relaxing when she realized it was him, funny thing was she never did look to see if her assumptions were correct.
“What do you want now?” she asked annoyed, and her annoyance grew when Ron and Hermione decided to join them as well. Biting back an irritated sigh, Kagome got up and walked to a different part of the field. She hated being around people, and the familiar feeling of companionship that it brought with it. She was not ready to open herself up like that, and she wondered if she ever would be.
“Harry, what do you suppose is wrong with her? She is very strange. I am sure it has something to do with her friends, considering how she never talks about them and is always closing people off from herself. It's like she's afraid to let someone get close to her.” Hermione stated, staring sadly in the direction of Kagome.
“I agree with Hermione mate, that Kagome chick has some serious people issues.” Ron added as well, also looking sadly in the direction of Kagome.
Harry nodded in agreement, it was obvious she had a dark past, but it wasn't like the wizarding community's past was full of sunny days and smiles. Voldermort insured that everyone had a dark past, the jerk.
“Do you think we should just leave her be?” Harry asked Hermione, she was the expert on girls and their feelings after all.
Still staring in the direction of Kagome, Hermione answered, “Yes, I think it's best.” So the three of them got up and left, deciding to figure out the puzzle of Kagome at a later time.
/-----/
Kagome knew that they were talking about her, she could here them with her heightened senses. Since the unleashing of her miko powers on that fateful day two weeks ago, she had noticed a lot of changes in herself. One being her hearing and eyesight, another her strength, and last her speed. Who knew that miko powers could be used to concentrated youkai qualities.
Sighing, Kagome looked to the Forbidden woods, something that was a lot like her. You could see the front, cold and foreboding, it looked like a place that held promise of beauty but something destroyed it. In the deeps of its vast inners, lay the monsters of its past, present, and future, forever haunting its land that once was a promising place of purity. No one knew the true secrets that lie within, people could only guess at what it may truly hold within its dark passes.
“Am I to be forever destined like the forest? To never find peace of the monsters that haunt my soul?” Kagome pondered out loud, looking up to the heavens that for shamed her for guidance. It was times like these that she truly felt so lost, times when she reflected on herself and past events. Her mind taunted her with scenarios of what she could of done different, and her dreams haunted her with the things she had done wrong.
A familiar humming of youkai snapped Kagome out of her thoughts, instantly she was on guard. Peering around she stretched her senses to locate the sudden youkai aura that filled the air in an intoxicating amount. `Why does it feel so familiar?' she wondered inside her mind, beads of sweat beginning to gather at her temple. `Why do I fear this familiar feeling? Is it because I am afraid of anything that belongs to my past?'
Her thoughts were put to rest however, when the demon emerged from the Forbidden forest. What Kagome saw, almost made her faint. `How can this be!' she thought unbelieving as she showed her first emotion other then hate, regret, sorrow, and betrayal; shock. Yes, Kagome was absolutely shocked at what she saw before her.
Still wearing his old fashioned white kimono, the lord of the Western lands, Lord Sesshomaru, walked out in all his glory. Even after all these years he still wore that expressionless face, something that was hauntingly familiar for Kagome. `I wore that face once; I was even starting to wear that face all the time. I never realized just how, creepy and haunting that face truly was.' Kagome thought with a small chill running up her spine.
“Miko, I thought I smelled your scent, what are you doing alive?” Sesshomaru questioned, his emotionless cold voice still in place like it was 500 years before.
Kagome simply gapped at him, the cold emotionless Kagome sat there gapping like a fool at the great lord. `Man, I must look stupid.' Her more reasonable mind decided to come back from whatever trip it had taken. Shaking her head, Kagome put her old façade back on.
“Sesshomaru.” Kagome breathed out in a deadly whisper. After all, the guy tried to kill her more then one time. Instantly, she went in a battle stance, prepared to fight to the death, `would the after life really be that bad?' she couldn't help but think on the inside of her mind.
Shaking off the thought, she cleared her head and put aside her selfishness. `If I died, the Shikon no tama would fall into the wrong hands. I can't allow that as its protector. I must stay alive to keep it safe, and also to keep my family happy.' Kagome thought determined, the spark of yearning to live coming back to her.
Sesshomaru gazed at her coolly, his eyes narrowing just a bit, but enough that Kagome could see it. “Miko, you are different. Why have you changed, why are you still alive? It has been 500 years if my memory serves correct.” Sesshomaru repeated himself; he hated doing that.
“Because I was never really from that time, I belong here.” Kagome stated, noticing the small enlarging of his eyes. `He is…surprised? I guess I never paid enough attention to this guy when we did meet. Back then I was a stupid love-struck naive girl, I hope I am never that dumb again…and weak…' Kagome mentally thought, still keeping her cool cold eyes on the emotionless youkai before her.
“Why have you changed, do not make me repeat myself again.” Sesshomaru may have spoken in his normal voice, but the underlining threat in his voice was loud and clear to Kagome.
Narrowing her eyes, Kagome locked hers with his, never looking away while she said, “You're half-brother tried to kill me.” Kagome's eyes glazed over with memories as she continued, “In a last attempt at life, my hidden miko powers were unleashed and by doing so, killed him.” Kagome kept her cool gaze, but she was unable to hide the flash of pain that entered her cold hardened eyes.
“So that is the true story of what happened to my half-bastard brother.” Sesshomaru spoke casually, like he was a curious person who had their curiosity fulfilled. This made Kagome mad, the very action of Inu-Yasha attacking her had caused her so much loss and grief. He stated it like it was nothing.
“Yes.” Kagome hissed out, venom leaking in her words. If Sesshomaru was surprised by her sudden change in scent, he didn't show it.
“Miko, I simply wished to ask a few questions, now that they are answered I have no need to be here.” With that, the cold emotionless demon turned his back on her and stalked away. Kagome just sat there, still not believing what happened.
After a while of staring at the stars, Kagome got up and left; her emotions now under control. Unknown to her, cold emotionless golden eyes watched her retreating figure to the castle.
/----/
“It's been a while, are you sure we should have left her out there all alone?” Ron asked, gazing worriedly out the window. Harry agreed with Ron full-heartedly, it had been to long.
Hermione shrugged, starting to doubt her own decision. `No, Kagome needed space to herself, whatever happened to her happened recently.' She stated in her mind firmly, trying to get rid of the nagging seeds of doubt that planted in her mind.
“Yes, I am sure, she should be here soon. After all, it is not after hours so she still has a right to be out of the common room. The time is almost up though, so she should be here soon.” It was hard to tell if Hermione was trying to convince them, or herself.
Nodding, the two boys sat back down by the fire. Everyone else had gone up to his or her dormitories for an early nights rest, something they should be doing. The fact that Kagome was still out there made sleep impossible however; so here they sat waiting for her.
Without realization, Kagome had crept into their hearts during the short time they had met, even with her cold exterior and self-containment. It was for some odd reason hard not to be drawn to the cold and sometimes seemingly heartless girl. There was something about her, something off, that told their souls to be near her and get her to talk about it. Something they all understood, and yet, didn't.
The creaking of the portrait made them all jump and turn. To their great relief, it was Kagome entering the common room, her expressionless mask set firmly in place. That's when they all knew, something happened to her while she was out there.
“Kagome are you ok? You look like you seen a ghost!” Harry asked perplex, Hermione and Ron nodded, “Yeah, you look like a vampire came up and bit you!” Ron shouted, trying to cheer her up a bit with a laugh, even if she had yet to crack a smile.
Hermione nodded in agreement with Ron's theory, “Yes, you look very pale.” She said in a more calculated way, causing Harry and Ron to roll their eyes.
“I'm fine, goodnight.” Was all Kagome said before heading up to the bedroom she was told Kilala was at. The other's watched silently and sadly.
“Well that went sooo well.” Ron commented sarcastically, looking to the ceiling in exasperation, Harry and Hermione simply sighed.
“I suppose we should get to sleep as well, we have a big day tomorrow. Plus, Kagome is in my room so I can see if I can get something out of her!” Hermione said cheerfully, liking the idea of talking to Kagome more and more.
With that, the three friends headed off to bed, two with worry, the other with determination.
/-----/
“Kilala!” Kagome cried silently when she spotted her neko curled up asleep on her bed. Kilala slowly opened up her crimson eyes and stared sleepily around until her eyes fell on her mistress.
With a happy mew, Kilala leapt into Kagome's arms, snuggling her tightly while Kagome hugged her close. It was obvious the two needed to be with each other, they were the only ones left from the feudal era who know what the other's been through.
“Hey Kagome!” a familiar, and currently unwanted voice rang through the dorm. Slowly, Kagome turned around and came face to face with Hermione, the most annoying girl around in her books. `She is alright if she doesn't prod!' she thought annoyed as she gazed at the bushy brown haired girl whose eyes were shining with determination. `Oh no…'
“So what's up?” she questioned brightly, looking at Kagome with those determined eyes of hers.
“I'm going to sleep, goodnight.” Kagome said with an emotionless voice, trying to end the conversation before it headed in a direction she didn't want. Of course, to her great `luck' Hermione wasn't having any of that. Instead of it ending quickly there, it only sped it up.
“What is wrong with you Kagome? Why can't you tell someone what happened? Why can't you let people in?” Hermione pleaded questingly, hoping for an answer. Instead she got a cold glare, which made her cringe slightly even though she tried not to.
With icy eyes, Kagome bore down at Hermione. “I do not have to explain myself to anyone. Stop asking me, go to sleep before I make you the hard way.” With the look in Kagome's eyes, you'd think she was going to hurt you if you denied her, but Kagome was merely going to put a sleeping charm on till morning.
To her great dislike, Hermione remained indifferent, trying her hardest to be brave. “You can't hurt me, it's not aloud at Hogwarts.” She declared firmly, like it was the most obvious thing in the world, however, Kagome only smirked.
“Who said I was going to hurt you?” Kagome questioned lightly, causing Hermione to look quizzically in her direction. With a swift movement Kagome fired off her magic and Hermione fell on the bed that she was leaning against asleep. Sighing, Kagome decided it was time for another walk, even though it was after school hours.
Taking Kilala with her, Kagome snuck out of the dormitories and headed down to the common room. To her delight it was empty, perfectly quite, and dankly dark. `Wonderful!' she thought with delight as she snuck silently through the portrait out into the halls of Hogwarts. All the tracking and sneaking practice paid off from the feudal era.
/----/
“How do you think Hermione's doing with Kagome? Do you think Kagome cracked?” Ron asked Harry while pulling his PJ top on; Harry shrugged, “I don't know, probably not. Kagome doesn't seem like the type you can get information out of easily.” He said thoughtfully, curiosity causing him to wonder why.
The two pondered on that bit of information for a while, before sighing and heading to bed. “Ron,” Harry spoke out in the quite room, Ron grunted sleepily in response, “What do you think is going to happened with…you know who.” Harry asked nervously, trying not the fall into the shudder that the very name brought.
Ron turned over in bed to look closely at Harry; he hadn't brought Voldermort up for a while. “I don't know mate, best not to ponder on it though. Now get to sleep, we have to start school tomorrow.” Ron stated, wanting the uncomfortable conversation to end as quickly as it started. To his delight Harry agreed to go to bed and the conversation was dropped.
/---/
“Kilala, do you feel that?” Kagome questioned, peering around through silted eyes. Kilala gave a low half grow, half mew, showing her displeasure of the feeling at hand as well.
Kagome peered around once more, sweat starting to pool at her temples. “It can't be him though, he's dead!” she whispered hoarsely to Kilala, still looking around for their seemingly invisible foe. Kilala simply growled in return.
“Kagome, I always knew you were from the future, just not this time.” An unfamiliar voice rang out through the field that Kagome had been resting in only moments before. Now she stood on guard gazing with worry around her surroundings.
“Who's there, how do you know my name? Dammit, it can't be you, you sound different!” Kagome seethed, trying not to show any of the panic she felt. The voice's haunting laugh made her shudder as she tried to not vomit, how she hated everything to do with this person.
Regaining, herself, she peered into the shadows, not knowing exactly where her enemy lie. “Scared Kagome? Pity, I thought that you were braver then this…” The voice felt like all around her, as well as the energy, it was smothering.
Glaring hard in all directions, Kagome's bravery kicked back into gear, “It is you isn't, you bastard. You were reincarnated weren't you? Who the hell was stupid enough to do something like that! What I want to know is how you kept you're old life's previous memories?” Kagome spoke deadly, trying to urge the figure to speak.
The voice just laughed again, the sound hollow and empty and harsh to her ears. “Kagome my dear, if I revile myself to you now, then what fun would that be? Maybe I'll just let you sit at Hogwarts for a while, and let you grow more fearful just knowing that I'm out here, alive and well, and more powerful then before.” The horrid voice was taunting her; how she despised the person it belonged to.
“Come out you coward!” Kagome yelled out to the dark night, peering around herself hoping to catch a glimpse of the one person causing her turmoil. Again, the evil laugh erupted around the field, causing small animals to flee the vicinity.
It happened to fast, first the surge of great power, followed by the bright light of raw energy. It came out of nowhere, it was fast as lighting, and it was heading towards her. She didn't have time to evade it for it was shot at close range. `Oh no, it's going to hit me!' she thought panicked, staring like a deer stuck in headlights at the on-coming energy wave.
All of a sudden a white blur came out of nowhere, grabbed her, and dodged the seemingly dodge-less wave. When she was roughly thrown on the ground, Kagome looked up to her savior, and she almost fainted in surprise.
Cold steely golden eyes, long white hair, and an expressionless face were the characteristics of, “Sesshomaru!” Kagome choked out exasperated, having a hard time grasping that it was Sesshomaru who had saved her life, when it was he himself who tried to take it more then once.
“Miko, I am displeased with your show of battle skill, I expected more from you.” Sesshomaru stated in his usual expressionless voice, not even looking at her but where the blast of power came from. Kagome inwardly seethed, even though she knew he was right, she shouldn't have froze like that.
“You were saved this time miko, until the next…” the presence then left, leaving Kagome, Sesshomaru, and a hissing neko in its wake. Kagome quickly shushed Kilala down, not wanting to get into a fight with Sesshomaru at the moment over a hissing neko demon.
“Miko, do you know who that was?” Sesshomaru spoke out all of a sudden, Kagome looked at the direction of the blast in distaste, “Yes.” She practically hissed out, still glaring in the direction the blast came from.
“Then you know what to expect in future predicaments.” Sesshomaru stated, still not looking at her but at the starry night sky instead. Kagome decided not to take notice of this, and continued glaring at the spot where the blast came from instead.
“Yes.” Was once again the only word she had spoken, Kagome was still sitting on the ground where Sesshomaru rudely `disposed' of her, staring at the spot the blast came from. `That bastard almost killed me!' Kagome was angrier with herself for almost getting killed then she was at the person who fired the blast that almost killed her.
“Miko, you must get some rest.” Sesshomaru cut through her thoughts with his expressionless voice, causing Kagome to look up at him when his words sunk in. To her surprise, he was gone without a trace.
Getting up, Kagome dusted herself off and straightened her clothing. Looking around once more in hopes of seeing Sesshomaru and properly thanking him, Kagome sighed when no sight greeted her. `What possessed him to save me? Why would someone save me anyways?' thoughts were continuously rolling around in her head, and she decided to just stop thinking all together, it was too hard to sort them out. Shaking her head, Kagome headed to the castle, deciding that only one thing was worth pondering, the resurrection of Naraku.
