Chapter 2- Making it Right
Inuyasha woke up that morning tired, grouchy, uncomfortable, but still determined. He looked down at his sleeping companions with love. Maybe yesterday was just the kick in the pants he needed. He looked around and took in his surroundings. He figured that everyone would be asleep for a little while, so he had some time to plan. He took off to find the perfect place to tell her what was on his mind.
Kagome woke up with a start. She just couldn't seem to get him out of her mind. She even dreamed about him. When she looked up she noticed that he wasn't there. She sat up angrily and thought. He was probably off seeing Kikyo again. He was probably declaring his undying love for her at this very instant, while she sat there and seethed. She hated herself for thinking this way. For so long she had wanted him, loved him, longed for him, and for so long she had been spurned. When was she going to learn?
She gazed around. Everyone was still sleeping. It really wasn't her place to wake them. She figured that no was as good a time as any to go to the hot spring and bathe. She had started rummaging through her things when he had come back.
“Hey Kagome, can you cook these?”
Kagome didn't know what was up, or why he was acting so funny, but she was not about to protest his kindness. She never answered him with words; she simply took the fish and began preparing them. She was about halfway done when he interrupted.
“Hey Kagome, after breakfast do you mind talking with me? I have some things I want to get off my chest?”
Frankly, Kagome was flabbergasted. She had never seen him so…. So sweet. But, she was still mad at him. However this was an offer she couldn't refuse. But that didn't mean that she had to accept graciously.
“Fine, Inuyasha. Are you going to wake the others, or am I going to have to do it?”
He was a little irked with her tone, but he understood. He was, for all intensive purposes, in the dog house. Normally he would have thrown a fit, but this time he let it go. He didn't respond, he just did the task at hand.
He woke them just as breakfast was finished.
Everyone was surprised. Not only did Inuyasha not wake them early, but when he did wake them it didn't involve yelling. Sure it was still awkward between Inuyasha and Kagome, but this act of consideration was enough for them to be a little less angry with Inuyasha about yesterday.
Sango, Miroku, and Shippo sat in silence as they ate their food. Each had their own suspicions, but none of them were bold enough to voice them, or anything else for that matter. They just watched in utter silence as Inuyasha nervously eyed Kagome, while Kagome stared at her plate. Were it not for the fact that they were all eating the same type of fish, they would have wondered what it was about Kagome's fish that was so much more interesting than their own.
Shippo was the first to break the ice. He simply asked Kagome if he could sit with her. It wasn't much but was enough to make Kagome look up from her extraordinarily interesting food long enough o acknowledge the people sitting next to her. She smiled weakly and responded with a weak,
“Yes.”
After that no one uttered a word. Although the fish was delicious everyone sat paralyzed in silence. Even after everyone had finished no one had dared to say a word. They all sat there and looked at each other for the most awkward two minutes of their lifetime. They all prayed for release, but no one would speak. Inuyasha was the first to break the ice this time.
“Well if you're done we should get going Kagome. I've already wasted too much time.”
Honestly everyone was perplexed. Not only was Inuyasha being courteous, but he didn't even blame them for the tardiness. It was almost as if Kikyo had sucked the evilness out of him and sent him back to his friends. Sango wondered if she was the only suspicious one in the group. Was Inuyasha being nice because he fucked up big time, or because he had been replaced by a Naraku clone? Most importantly, where was he going with Kagome? Sango sat perplexed, unnerved, but silent. She stayed silent as Kagome walked over to Inuyasha, climbed on his back, and went away.
“Miroku, What do you think is going on between them?”
“I don't know Sango, but I though Kagome would be a bit more upset.”
“I think she is. It is Inuyasha I am worried about. Do you think he has been cloned or something? I mean he is never that nice.”
“I don't know Sango, but we will see when they return. I am sure Kagome will want to talk later. Please do not leave me out of your confidence if she does.”
“Miroku, if you think that I will tell you what Kagome tells me in confidence, you are more stupid than I had previously thought.”
“Why my dearest Sango, I would never ask you to betray her confidence. I just want to know that she is okay”.
“Hmmm, I'll consider it”.
Inuyasha must have taken Kagome five or six miles out by now. Kagome was starting to wonder where they were headed. She thought that he wanted to talk, not jump around”.
“Hey Inuyasha, where are we going? I thought you wanted to talk?”
“I do” Inuyasha replied through gritted teeth.
He was beginning to get tired of her tone. He was trying to be nice, but she wasn't making it easy. He knew she was upset, but damn! Oh well, he would just have to put up with it for now.
Kagome sat back. She was going to have o wait, but that didn't mean that she felt any better about it. She thought to her herself `Is he going to apologize? Or is he going to replace me?' She couldn't figure it out. He had never apologized before, but it was always a possibility. She was more inclined to believe that he was going to tell her that he had picked Kikyo over her, but that he wanted her to stick around until they found the Shikon Jewel. Then she could leave so that he could live in peace with his walking zombie from hell! She was so sure that this had to be the reason for their `talk' that she began to seethe even before they got to where they were going. She was livid. How dare he do this! She was so upset that she didn't notice her surroundings. She didn't notice until Inuyasha opened his mouth and said the words she never thought that he would say.
“Kagome, I am so sorry. I had never realized how you felt, and I was my fault. I had never paid attention to your feelings before. I had never realized how you felt until you told me yesterday. I am sorry I have treated you so poorly. I love you so much Kagome, and if you will have me, I will never leave your side again.”
Kagome was shocked. He seemed so sincere. She didn't know what to say, and for a moment she just stood there and stared at him.
Inuyasha looked back at her. This was the hardest thing he had ever had to say. He had to be honest; he was a little hurt that she hadn't said anything. I mean he understood why. He didn't deserve her forgiveness, but he had still hoped. He was about to give up all together until she said something, or more like did something. She tackled him. He wasn't expecting it. He hit the ground pretty hard.
“I've been waiting for you to say that for so long”.
He also hadn't expected her to begin sobbing uncontrollably into his shoulder. He couldn't figure out what was wrong.
“Hey, why are you crying”?
Kagome looked up at Inuyasha.
“Why Inuyasha? Why did you wait so long”?
He looked back at her. He could see the hurt and relief in her eyes.
“I don't know Kagome. I guess I just need to hear you say it first. I never thought about whether or not you loved me. In fact I never thought. I am sorry”.
“Why did you go to her”?
“Because I was a dumbass. Kagome I'm sorry. I was trying to cling to the only thing that reminded me of happiness. We didn't do anything. I wasn't that dumb”.
“You swear Inuyasha. You swear that I'll never have to worry about you leaving me again. I'm not asking you to never see her again, I ... I just want to know that at the end of the day it is me you want to be with, not her”.
Inuyasha smiled. He was overjoyed almost. Not only did she forgive him, but she wanted to stay with him too. He couldn't help himself. He pulled her into a tight embrace, and kissed her passionately. He reveled in her softness, in the texture of her hair, the way her lips parted for him, and the way she sighed when he kissed her. Of course he couldn't love anyone else. That is not what he said, but what he did say was close enough.
“Only you, Kagome. Only you”.
