chapter five

Compromise

"We have the results," Dr. Kobayashi--or rather Kouga said as he and a nurse entered the room. Kagome and Mrs. Higurashi took a seat as Kouga showed them the results. He pointed to the area below Souta's ribs to where his stomach was. "Here," he said, "in the stomach cavity, you can see the figure of the kidney plant." He drew an imaginary circle around the supposed plant. "My theory, though it may sound absurd, is that a kidney bean had somehow germinated and augmented within the stomach cavity of your son, therefore creating this plant. As to how it came to be so extensive in a little over an hour, I have no idea."

"So can you fix it?" Mrs. Higurashi asked.

"Of course, we just need a surgeon to remov--"

"Wait a minute! A surgeon? There is no way some guy is going to open up my son and probe his insides with sharp objects!" Mrs. Higurashi protested.

"Well if you put it that way Mrs. Higurashi--"

"And aren't you a little too young to be a doctor? Shouldn't you be an apprentice? Maybe you are and you're just posing as a doctor," Mrs. Higurashi speculated.

"Mama! He's trying to do his job!" Kagome defended. Mrs. Higurashi shot her daughter a suspicious look. Kagome quickly shut her mouth.

Outside, Inuyasha could hear the conversation perfectly. Why was she defending that son-of-a-bitch? He's probably going to kill her brother.

Oh, not like you already did, a small voice in his head said sarcastically. It was right. He did cause the kidney bean plant to grow excessively fast. Maybe he should apologize. He knew he couldn't be that heartless.

But it's not like you have to respect that bitch. She freed you from that everlasting hell of a doll form, but placed you back into slavery by subduing you with that stupid voodoo thing. A human! Subduing a powerful hanyou such as yourself! Besides, what has she done for you except make your life miserable? The other side of his conscious said.

But she's been nice to you all along. She tries so hard to make you comfortable by talking to you and sharing stories about herself. She even gives you food, lodging, a nice warm place to sleep at night, and she has friends trying their best to find you a spell--

--that would either seal you back or free you. You know what they'll choose.

No you don't.

Yes you do.

No you don't.

Yes you do.

Inuyasha shook his head. He had got to stop consulting with those voices in his head.

Once Dr. Kobayashi left to allow Mrs. Higurashi to calm down, Inuyasha walked in. Kagome turned her back on him, still angry at doing this to her brother.

Inuyasha sucked in his pride and walked up to her. "I need to talk to you outside," he whispered.

"Why? To make fun of my brother's situation?" Kagome scoffed.

Inuyasha glared at her then, without warning, he promtly picked her up over his shoulder and brought her outside.

"Hey! Inuya--what are you doing?!" she asked, throwing her fist at every part of his body she could reach. "Put me down! Mama!"

Mrs. Higurashi watchd stunned as Inuyasha carried her daugther off. She waved her hand at him and said sympathetically, "Sorry honey, I don't want to get involved."

"Why are you trying to purposely ruin my life?" Kagome asked as they passed some watchful eyes down the hallways. Inuyasha didn't seem to notice them. "I mean, I wouldn't hate you if you tried to accidentally ruin my life, but this--this is completely mean!" Kagome stopped to hear his irascible arguement, but nothing came out. "Inuyasha? Are you even listening to me?" He remained silent until he found a stool outside of the hospital and dropped her on it. "Oww!!"

"Look Kagome, you didn't listen to me earlier. I wanna apologize--really--I'm not playing any jokes and I'm not lying anymore. I'll even try to help your damn brother out," Inuyasha said, hoping it would please Kagome. Yet...Kagome saw through it. He felt utterly uncomfortable apologizing.

She turned away. "I don't want to listen to you. You're not going to help my brother out, you'll kill him. Just leave it to Kouga."

Inuyasha made a face. "So you two are on a first name basis now huh?"

"Yes we are. Do you have a problem with that?"

"No," Inuyasha began.

"Then don't ask stupid questions," Kagome said, her back still facing him.

"Fine! If you're gonna be a bitch, I'll just leave!" Inuyasha shouted as he began to stomp back into the hospital. Kagome watched him.

"Wait...Inuyasha..."

Inuyasha turned.

"I'm sorry. You-you just got me really mad...that's all...I'm sorry I said that I regretted taking off the arrow...and all the other stuff I said that I don't remember right now," Kagome said softly. Of course, Inuyasha heard her pefectly clearly. He watched as her eyes tried to prevent themselves from releasing tears, but Inuyasha saw it as clearly as he heard her voice.

He sat down silently next to her, staring into space completely bewildered. I don't get it...she's apologizing and she didn't do anything wrong. He watched as she sniffled softly, so softly that any human ear wouldn't hear it if they sat next to her, but Inuyasha did. He suddenly felt a pang of regret. After probably traumatizing her brother permanently and treating her like dirt after she freed him, she apologized. He suddenly felt dehumanized.

Poor gentle Kagome had to go through all this crap because of him. He began to think. Maybe it would have been better if she never freed him. He watched her cry. He never knew how to handle a girl when she was crying.

It's good that she's crying. It's her fault.

No it's not.

Yes it is.

No it's not.

Yes it is.

"Shut up!!" Inuyasha yelled.

"I'm sorry!" Kagome wailed. Inuyasha hit his forehead hard with the palm of his hand.

"Dammit, Kagome, I wasn't talking to you."

"Then who were you talking to? The imaginary voices in your head?" Kagome guessed sarcastically.

Wow, she's good at this guessing stuff.

"Just believe me...but...anyways I should be the one who's sorry."

"No--"

"Dammit, yes!"

"Actually you're right," Kagome sniffled. Inuyasha gave a gentle smile, involuntarily. If he knew he was smiling, he would definitely wipe it off. He offered his sleeve. Kagome chuckled softly.

"Sorry?" he apologized, sheepishly. Kagome nodded as a consent to forgiveness and looked down at the ground. She stopped crying. Only the occasional sniffs could be heard in the silence of the night. Inuyasha sighed.

"Inuyasha? Why don't we make a deal?" Kagome said suddenly, looking up at him.

"What kind of deal?"

Kagome sniffed. "If...if you promise not to cause Armaggedon in my life, then I'll never use the doll to subdue you again."

"Promise?"

"Yes, I promise."

"Deal."

"Deal."

Kagome smiled over at Inuyasha as Souta was being brought into the car. Inuyasha glanced back at her and lifted an brow in confusion.

"What?"

"Nothing," she replied quickly, turning away. "I just wanted to thank you."

"Well, don't." Inuyasha looked straight ahead. He was blushing. At least she was the only one who knew he had been so nice as to apologize to her that way. He even made her swear not to tell anyone about his "acts of kindness" as Kagome called it.

Earlier that evening, Kouga had just left the room and everyone had fallen into a deep sleep. It had been a long day. Mrs. Higurashi was already preparing to sign papers for Souta's surgery even if Kagome gave a heated protest. Eventually, the Sandman reached them and they all fell wonderfully asleep.

When they woke up, doctors and nurses were trying to hold out the reporters who'd heard about the news of the little boy with a living plant in his stomach from little gossiping nurses at the front desk. They were astounded when Souta bounced out of bed.

Dr. Kouga was also confused when Souta had stood out of his bed and said he was feeling much better. Kagome had awoken at this time and was mortified when she found her brother standing. She told him to lay back down, but he wouldn't listen to her. He simply told her that it was gone.

More x-rays were done and strangely, doctors found nothing wrong. They assumed that the medication they had been giving him to destroy the plant in his stomach worked.

Kagome smiled again. She knew Inuyasha did it. He could be nice if he wanted. There was no other explanation. He denied it when she asked, but of course, he wouldn't admit he did something nice for a change.

"Stop smiling," Inuyasha said gruffly.

"I'm not smiling!"

"I saw you smiling," Inuyasha pushed on stubbornly.

"No you didn't. You were looking straight ahead."

"Did too."

A/N: Well, that's finished. I'll have the next chapter out as soon as I get the time! Promise!
