The night was cold and the half moon shone brightly in the crisp night air. All around the noises of the night could be heard in the scratchings of small nocturnal animals and the forlorn hooting of an owl as it sought its prey in the night. But all of these activities were irrelevant to the two people sitting around the fire, they were aware, and they were watchful - but these noises were unthreatening and so unimportant.
The firelight flickered in his eyes as her stated at her across the campfire, those golden eyes that only seemed to soften when he was looking at her. She stared back at him, wanting to tell him how she really felt, but knowing that she never could, not while she knew he truly loved Kikyou. Suddenly he raced around the campfire and held her to him, almost crushing her with his need to hold her close, whispering her name……Kagome…..Kagome…..
Kagome!! Kagome!! Jesus bitch would you get up already! The sun rose hours ago and even Miroku is awake and ready!
Kagome rolled over in her sleeping bag to see the face of an indignant hanyou just an inch from her own; his eyes screwed up in annoyance and his face beginning to turn pink from the realisation of his position. Quickly jumping away, with inhuman speed and grace he glared at the monk off to the left, who was observing the scene with a knowing smirk.
“Don't retreat so quickly Inuyasha, Kagome didn't look like she disliked where you were, it could have been a tender moment,” he mocked. “It is not the men who should run from the women, but the women who should run from the men.” He recited as his hand reached for the right cheek of a certain youkai exterminator.
WHAK!
“I rephrase the statement…men should run from those women which are armed.” And dangerous he thought. I wonder if she is as forceful in the bedroom…
WHAM!!
“And none of your dirty lecherous thoughts either houshi. I can see when you are thinking them from that look on your face….it's even worse that when you actually are feeling me up,” said Sango as she resumed packing.
During which an even pinker Inuyasha had jumped up a tree and was angrily shouting down insults to a monk with a swelling bump on his head and a cheeky grin on his face.
Ahh sighed Kagome, Another morning in the sengoku jidai, she thought as she began to pack her oversized backpack; rolling up her sleeping bag and generally helping the others pack up camp. With Inuyasha rushing around uselessly telling them to hurry, or shouting insults from his perch up the tree.
As Kagome watched the madness that was their typical morning she sighed once again. It's so strange how I have come to think of this as normal…I couldn't imaging not waking up to this ever again, with no Shippo, Sango, Miroku, and no Inuyasha…she thought. Which brought her thoughts back to a problem that had been plaguing her for some time now, especially in the mornings, what will happen after the shards are all collected, after the jewel is complete and he no longer needs his `shard detector'? Kagome knew that she was more than a shard detector to her friends, but she couldn't help but wonder when Inuyasha would leave them…her…for Kikyou.
“Oi Kagome, are you ready yet!” yelled Inuyasha as Kagome put the finishing touches to packing her bag, making sure that the straps were tight and properly in place. “Coming!” She replied and almost jumped as he suddenly landed in front of her, grabbing her bag and loading it on to Kirara in her transformed state, as he stated “So can we get moving or what?”
It was a clear and bright morning, the sun was shining as it was now well past dawn, and the air was filled with the refreshing scents of Spring which are almost always covered and masked by pollution in Kagome's time, but are clear and vibrant in the Sengoku Jidai.
They were heading back to Kaede's village after another unsuccessful shard attempt, it wasn't that they hadn't defeated the evil youkai plaguing the village, just that like so many other times recently the youkai hadn't possessed a shard. Which other than being disappointing never failed to piss Inuyasha off, I don't know why he can't just admit that helping people isn't all that bad, or that much of a waste of time, I know he doesn't mind it nearly as much as he makes out to. Thought Kagome as she climbed onto Inuyasha's back, and she couldn't help but wonder once again what her friends would think if they saw her like this riding a boy, especially a boy like Inuyasha.
As Kagome climbed onto Inuyasha's back and squirmed around to get comfortable he growled out, “Oi, bitch stop squirming or I'll drop you right here and you can damn well walk,”
“Sorry Inuyasha, but I am trying to make sure I don't sit on any of you hair and pull it, I am only thinking of your comfort, you know.” She replied indignantly.
“Oh…well then hurry up and get set then,” he replied huffily a bit taken aback, how was I to know that she was trying to help, shit, that girl is always making me feel like I am the bad guy, instead of the guy who carries her everywhere, protects her, looks after her, lov…ok, now that is going too far, now look what that bitch has me thinking. Gruffly returning to the task at hand, Inuyasha began to run, not as fast as he could of course, but at a comfortable pace which the others who were riding on Kirara could easily keep up with.
“You know you wouldn't have to carry me if you had let me take my bike,” Kagome said innocently. “What, and then had to carry that piece of crap too? Keh, I don't think so, I don't know why you love that thing of your so much, it's noisy, slow and dangerous.” And I like you right where you are, retorted (and thought) Inuyasha. Why does she love that bike of hers so much, surely she likes me carrying her, right? Or else she would have stopped letting me by now, right? and anyway it's…easier to protect her this way…yes, that's why I prefer her here so it's easier…
“I don't know why you always complain Inuyasha; I mean the way you always choose to carry me around all the time anyone would think you liked it.” She answered playfully. He stopped dead, and Kagome knew that she had gone too far.
This statement had been too close to his thoughts for comfort, “Fine then bitch if you aren't gonna appreciate my giving you a ride you can bloody well walk!” He growled as he dropped her on the ground. Stupid cow thinks she knows my thoughts; well she isn't so cocky now eh. We'll see how much she likes me carrying her when she has walked all the way back to Kaede's. Yeah that'll teach her to open her big mouth.
Looking behind him and seeing Kagome as she sat in the dirt, slowing getting up and rubbing her but in discomfort, Inuyasha felt a twinge of guilt, but as his eyes travelled to her face the twinge disappeared as he met flinty eyes filled with annoyance, and he braced himself for the `sit', glancing around in surprise when it didn't come.
“Fine if that's how you see it maybe I don't want to ride with you anyway!” she shouted angrily as she made her way to the now alighted Kirara, “I am sure that Kirara won't mind me riding with her, and I am sure that she will make it a much more comfortable journey.” She added stormily as she climbed up onto Kirara, making sure that she was out of a certain monk's reach sitting in front of Sango, but behind Miroku.
The rest of the journey was made in angry silence as the animosity between Kagome and Inuyasha was so thick it was almost tangible. They were all tired from their fight with the youkai yesterday, and after Kagome and Inuyasha's fight nobody really felt like talking anyway.
As he rushed on ahead Inuyasha was left alone with his thoughts. Why does she have to be so difficult? At least when she sits me I can be angry with her, but now she has me feeling like the bad guy again. She always does this, always makes me feel like I did something wrong, when it was her that was complaining, and her that was being slow in the morning, he glanced behind to see how far behind the others were, and caught a glimpse of a sad and distant looking Kagome, there she is again, probably thinking of her world, and all its great things, those `tests' she likes so much, of the boys of her time. Yes that is what she must be thinking of, the men of her time must be lining up at her door asking her parents for her hand in marriage. She'll marry one of those bastards and then they'll probably laugh when she tells him all about the stupid pathetic hanyou that she used to ride like a bloody horse! Well not anymore, no, now she can damn well walk!!
He glared angrily behind him causing Kagome's distant look to become one of hurt surprise as he abruptly called a rest, all the while glaring daggers at her as images of her and her `husband to be' plagued Inuyasha's mind. Why should I care if she marries some bastard from her time, its not like she means anything to me, and she doesn't even belong here. No she should just go and laugh, it's not like I'd care at all!
The place he had selected for their lunch break was a small glade only a few meters from the path, there was springy green turf, and the bubbling sound of water foretold of a stream nearby. All in all it was a beautiful place to stop for lunch, and Inuyasha was secretly proud that he had provided it. They would be eating on the side of the road if they didn't have me.
Jumping into the nearest comfortable looking tree Inuyasha quickly surveyed the surrounding area for danger, and after deciding it to be safe enough plopped himself down to lounge comfortably on a branch. He watched over the group as they began to set up for lunch, with Miroku and Sango arguing over who should collect the wood with Shippo absent.
Shippo had stayed at Kaede's village, but only after being bribed by Kagome with chocolates and sweets from her world. Spoilt little shit, he will never learn to survive on his own with Kagome babying him all the time, I didn't have anyone to baby me when I was young, I was on my own and had to survive on my own and it made me strong…and lonely...just then Inuyasha's thoughts were then interrupted by the shaking of his tree.
“What the hell do you think you're doing Kagome?” he shouted down at a rather silly looking Kagome who by now was almost halfway up to where he was sitting. “Well I thought that it was rather obvious that I was climbing a tree.” She replied a little short of breath. “Since I thought that you might like your lunch and you weren't answering me when I called.”
Embarrassed that he had been too absorbed in his thoughts to notice her rather pathetic attempt to climb his tree he jumped down to the ground, looking up at the struggling Kagome with a smirk. “Hey Inuyasha, if you want to look up her skirt, you shouldn't make it so obvious!” came Miroku's jeering voice from the other side of the campfire; causing both Kagome and Inuyasha to turn an amusing shade of pink.
“Not everyone's mind is set to lech monk!” came Inuyasha's heated reply to which he once again jumped up into the tree, looking down on Kagome and wondering why she hadn't seemed to have moved at all.
“Well bitch are you up or down? Make up your mind you look stupid clinging there like that.” He shouted down at her, feeling safe again now that Miroku's taunt now no longer applied.
“Um, well, I can't. I'm stuck. And your ramen is getting cold.” She replied a bit sheepishly. Looking down again Inuyasha could see that she had attempted the climb whilst carrying two steaming cups of ramen, and that she was, as she had said, stuck.
Oh and I suppose that she expects me to rescue her again. He thought as he jumped to the ground again, landing for a second before jumping up again scooping Kagome into his arms and landing on his branch all in one swift movement.
Kagome was clinging to the tree feeling more than a little idiotic, and glad that her only audience was Miroku (whose opinion didn't really matter much) and Inuyasha who had seen her in worse situations then this. Looking back now she realised that she probably shouldn't have tried climbing with the ramen, but Inuyasha had been acting strangely and seemed so sad and alone sitting on his branch deep in thought that she had wanted to keep him company; and when he didn't answer her, she, thinking that he was still mad at her from her remark before, decided to take matters into her own hands.
Still clinging to the tree with her face still lightly pink from Miroku's earlier comment Kagome was taken completely by surprise when she felt herself being picked up by Inuyasha, instead of putting her on the ground, carrying her with him up once again to alight on his branch.
“So where's my ramen? You better not have spilled any of it during that stupid stunt of yours.” Inuyasha said as he sat himself back down against the tree looking at Kagome with feigned annoyance. Kagome, who was still stunned at now finding herself up a tree with Inuyasha had almost completely forgotten about the now cooling ramen in her hands, and his words snapped her out of her reverie.
“Um, yes here it is Inuyasha, and I wouldn't have even tried climbing up if you hadn't been off with the fairies!” she replied playfully, but then I would be on the ground instead of up here with you. Handing Inuyasha one of the cups of now almost cold ramen Kagome tried to make herself comfortable. She wriggled around on the branch trying different positions, how can he sleep up here? Eventually settling for a daring position leaning near Inuyasha's arm, at least if I fall he'll be able to catch me, she tried to convince herself. Yes this is purely for safety.
Inuyasha had now finished his ramen with a speed which probably could have gotten him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, not caring that it was now cold and slightly gluggy, and was once again lounging back against the tree. Well at least I got some ramen out of that whole mess he thought and now I have Kagome up the tree with me, maybe this day won't be so bad after all, now he had noticed that she was squirming around trying to get comfortable, if she keeps that up she'll fall out of the tree, stupid bitch…and as she settled against his arm he almost fell out of the tree himself with surprise.
Startled and a little hurt by the way Inuyasha had tensed with her touch, Kagome started to carefully move away, but just as she began to move she felt his arm wrap around her shoulders, “If your not careful bitch, you'll fall, and don't think I want to be carrying your injured ass all the way back to the village, and then having to wait for your slow pathetic human body to heal.” Inuyasha said gently, his tone undermining his words.
Kagome relaxed back into his semi embrace, with a huge smile on her face, and began to eat her now stone cold ramen. She knew that one day Inuyasha might leave her to be with Kikyou, but in moments like these she could almost pretend that he wasn't, and that it was her that he wanted to be with.
After they had both finished their ramen, Inuyasha, taking a surprised Kagome into his arms jumped down from the tree, landing on the springy turf with his typical grace and agility. “Alright we've wasted enough time already I want o be back at Kaede's by sunset, and if we're not you can all damn well walk in the dark, because tonight we aren't stopping until we get there.” Inuyasha yelled rudely before setting off ahead leaving the others to pack up and ready themselves for the rest of their journey.
“Typical…” Miroku stated peevishly, “he's the one keeping us here while he hugs Kagome in a tree, and then he yells at us for wasting time.” Kagome, now a lovely shade of pink and having just finished packing her bag, then quickly stormed off after Inuyasha leaving a startled monk, and an annoyed taijya in her wake.
A/N: Ok everyone there was chapter 1, I hope that you liked it. I know that nothing interesting has happened yet, but don't worry I am just trying to set the scene, something interesting will happen involving the well, Shippo and maybe even some men in white coats, but for that you will have to wait. Also I hate chapters that are really short so I am going to try to make sure these chapters are all about 3000 words long, and the next chapter should be up pretty soon as I am in the mood for writing.
Please R & R and of anyone out there is willing to beta for me please email me because after you have read this I am sure that you can see I need one.
