InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Moving Up in the World ❯ Moonlight Sonata ( Chapter 19 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Hello all,

One wonderful reader suggested I update and put the banquet on Christmas, as it could be all of your Christmas present and that is when it takes place in the story anyway.
Unfortunately, I was not up to the task, Though the second I read the review I was like, “THAT IS THE GREATEST IDEA EVER!” Xmas is a very hectic time of year, and since I have very little conviction event without all that, I did diddly squat. I did work on them a few times, but I was only able to do a page at best.
But back to the point, I haven't given many of my real life Christmas presents to my friends yet being a forgetful and lazy person Soooo, my plan is just to say sorry and MERRY Christmas! (Pretend I'm there, right next to your desk, handing you this lovely full-length chapter on my knees. Also I have a Sesshie plushie tied to it.) ;)

Here you go:

Rin thumped her feet and rolled over violently. This was certainly not the first time she had done this that night. She had not caught one measly wink of sleep. That night had been disconcerting. They got home and Sesshoumaru immediately removed himself from her presence and closed himself behind the forbidden door that led to his room. So basically, she had spent all night fuming and worrying without anything to take it out on.

Rin flip-flopped over once again. Maybe a nice snack would do her some good…. Yes…skittles…purple ones(she normally hated those…) ginger ale…cheetos…she ripped off the covers and out into the cold she went. Rin noticed the way she had torn her room apart. She gave a pile of stuff a half-hearted kick. Finally she reached the heavy door and gave a mighty twist…

Whuh? Rin could hear a distinct noise running through the house. Wait, it wasn't just noise…it was piano. Somebody was playing a sweet, haunting melody. Rin ducked back in and peeked at the alarm…2:26…Hmm. She decided it had to be Sesshoumaru. But what on earth was he doing? Her better judgement beckoned her to return to the cozy bed and leave well enough alone...but it was such a haunting melody…

Out she went. Her socked feet thumped lightly upon the floor. She finally reached the living room's door and ducked out of sight. She sat upon the floor and oh-so-carefully peeked out. What she saw left her speechless.

There he was in all his glory. His silhouette and the piano's outlined by the city's bright night sky. Rin's jaw dropped as she saw that he was shirtless. His moonlight hair and pale skin stark against the ebony piano. He had his eyes shut and was playing from deep within. Rin crawled silently to a closer spot behind the couch. She hadn't realized he could play…but then again, all upper class were usually taught to play an instrument.

The song was a deep one that spoke of honor, love, and sorrow. Its striking chords caught her off guard. It made her feel betrayal, loyalty, and a love beyond knowing. She looked to him with a tear in her eye, because what the song really made her think about most was Sesshoumaru himself.

Suddenly the song cut off. Rin inhaled silently. What had made him stop. Too afraid to look, she stiffened.

“Rin?” she heard a gruff voice call out softly.

“Yes?” something compelled her to answer.

“What keeps you from your slumber?” he asked without looking from her.

“Nothing…I just heard and…” She tried to explain.

“You heard me?” he stated more than asked.

“Yes…it was very good.” She whispered back.

“Well next time…you need not hide.” He said softly as he graced her with his amber eyes. Rin was breathless…there was just something about him…

Rin

Rin sat straight up in bed with a jolt. She smacked the top of the alarm clock and rolled over. Today was an important day, for tomorrow was the banquet. Izayoi had told her that this was an even busier day than the actual party for her, so Rin had offered to help. Rin threw her legs off the bed and into the plush carpet. She sighed as she realized that she could probably never go without all these luxuries again.

Rin was brushing her teeth in front of the mirror. She probably never had looked better in her life, but that wasn't saying anything since she had been living on the streets for most of it. She couldn't say how pretty she was exactly. It was hard for her to properly access herself. She knew she was no true beauty like Sango or Kagome, but she liked to think she had her own cute charm.

```````
Rin yawned as the usher held open the door for her. She was a little down, Sesshoumaru hadn't left his room that morning. A black Mercedes pulled up to the curb in front of her just as the usher was about call a cab for her. A tall young man stepped out and stood in front of her. After further inspection she noticed a golden nametag that stated his name and that he worked for West Oni corp. Rin immediately relaxed, she had been expecting Izayoi herself.
“Miss Rin?” he asked she nodded. “Mrs. Takahashi apologizes for the lack of her presence, but asks that you would accompany me to the Grand Taiyoukai Hall, where she is finalizing the preparations for the banquet.” He said stiffly.
She nodded once more and hopped in the back. The Mercedes was outfitted for only the most divine guests. There was champagne in a mini fridge as well as some of the finest sparkling water. Rin dared not touch any. Rin had barely stopped rooting through the Mercedes when the driver let her know they were there.
Rin got out lazily. She noticed some writing in a metal block in the concrete. It had some old Japanese figures imprinted on it. She was about to inquire about it but once she looked up she was lost in awe. Now Rin had seen some breathtaking things in the past months, The Takahashi house, Oni Corp, the stores, Sesshoumaru's house, but this was different. Somehow it's grandeur wasn't even of the material world, but more of an ethereal quality. Rin couldn't place it exactly, but it reminded her of something…
“Miss Rin? I know it's quite a sight, The Takahashi family has owned this marvel for it's entire existence.” The driver said jovially.
“The Takahashi family is that old?” Rin asked.
“Yes, they can trace their blood back into a time where it was said demons ruled the world and humans lived in terror, but that is probably a load of hooey.” He said as they went along.
Rin felt a shiver run through her. This man's words didn't mean anything to her, and at the same time… they meant something to her… she just didn't know what…
“Here we are.” He said as he pried the gigantic door open…That door had to have been designed to let something the size of a killer whale in…
“Hello dear.” Izayoi's voice echoed through the hall.
Rin looked up to the vaulted ceilings, the night sky was beautifully depicted upon it's ceiling with some sort of glowing rock speckled across it. It's interior had obviously been refurbished a thousand times, but Rin could still see the Old style preserved in the golden tiles.
“Admiring the hall? It is surely beautiful. Inutaisho and I got married here. All the marriages in his family for a thousand years have taken place here.” She said wistfully, her voice echoing.
“What are those glowing stones?” Rin asked.
“Well, no one really knows. They are from a time lost to us. And Inutaisho won't have them ripped from the ceiling for some silly experiments. They glow each night, perfectly representing the night's sky. I believe they are magic, others believe we spent millions of dollars putting them up there. Either way they are very spectacular.”
“They…are magic.” Rin whispered.
“Well, do you like the decorations? We pretty much just let the hall speak for itself, but I did put up some silk cloths…I thought a great theme for this banquet would be the feudal era.” Izayoi trailed off into a deep examination of everything she did. Rin knew that the most supportive thing to do was nod encouragingly. “I always work so hard, but in the end no one notices anything but the stars…” Izayoi whispered. “ are you excited about tomorrow night?” she asked.
“Yes, yes I am.” Rin whispered as she looked up into the sparkling ceiling.
Sesshoumaru---------------------------
Sesshoumaru refused to admit he was moping. He also refused to admit he was avoiding her, but that didn't change the facts. He was sipping on his umpteenth cup of coffee as he read through the alternate language of the stock markets.
Oni corp. was up again. It had been going gradually up ever since his father had started it. His father was an entrepreneur if there ever was one. To Sesshoumaru there was no finer man, he had had no faults. Until Izayoi of course. Sesshoumaru could not account for that, and he hated when he could not account for something. Another thing he couldn't account for was Rin…
He sighed. It was getting onto 11 and he was still in his bathrobe. This wouldn't do, he had a busy day ahead of him…
``````````

Sesshoumaru had been driving for some time now and he could tell he was reaching his destination. The streets were getting progressively more dank and the buildings more and more disheveled. He was entering a much shadier place in town, but that was were he had to go if he wanted to find Narraku.

````````
“Oh hello, Sesshoumaru.” Kikyo crooned. “Narraku is expecting you.” She gestured to a door behind her. Sesshoumaru straightened up and entered the misty room.
“Mr. Takahashi, quite nice to see you.” Narraku said without turning around.
“Wish I could say the same.” Sesshoumaru growled.
“Eh eh eh, tomorrow is quite a big day now isn't it?”
“Is it?” Sesshoumaru asked innocently.
“Now now, Sesshoumaru, don't play with me. You know tomorrow is the day you are going to be attending the banquet with none other than the beautiful Kagura.” Narraku said.
“I know this. Tell me how this will happen.” Sesshoumaru snapped.
“Don't worry, she will come to you,” Narraku purred.
Narraku--------------------
“So how exactly, will we get this to work?” Kikyo asked darkly.
“Simple. We have his weak spot now. I hardly see how it could possibly go wrong.” Narraku hissed.
“And how do you know he loves the girl anyway? Sesshoumaru has never shown any affection,” Kikyo warned.
“Oh I know all right. Our great Lord Sesshoumaru loves the girl more than his own self, and that shall be his undoing.”
TBC!!!
Whoa, we really are getting waist deep into plot now aren't we? Don't you worry your pretty little heads, I don't mean to brag, but I do believe I have weaved together an insidious plot! Until recently, not even I would have thought of it!
BWAHAHAHAHAH!
Up next: The Banquet (yes I will have a more creative title that that…) Love, betrayal, heartbreak, and the culmination of Narraku's nasty plot!
Update info: I hope to update ASAP, but as my Grandfather always says “Why don't you start wishing into one hand and pooping in the other and see which one fills up first.” (I don't really get it either, but I think it has something to do with hopes and wishes not really meaning diddly squat sometimes.)
Misc. Info: At least this was mostly a full- sized chapter. And as for the rest of the story I imagine quite a few chapters left to end the conflict, and then even more to end the story happily.
Thank you: Everyone.
Love you all,
Kitkat
IMPORTANT:
I received a very important question I thought you all need to look over from an especially vigilant reader
(normally I post a few FAQs in my bio)
Q. Hey why doesn't Rin freak out since Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha, etc. are all demons?
A. (clears throat) This is probably going to be more long-winded than necessary, but here I go.
In my Pseudo- Tokyo, things are a little different, and a little unexplained. You see I wanted Inu and Sess to remain white-haired and fanged etc. because I think they look much better that way, and even when other authors describe the with black hair or something, I still end up imaging them with white. Also, I wanted to nix some of the fear.
And so, my Tokyo is a mishmash of humans and demons. Rin (just like in the anime) has no fear of Sesshoumaru. I don't really have an explanation as per why this is, but neither do I want to commit myself to making up one on the spot. There are many great AU fanfics focusing on overcoming the demon-human separation (can we say slave fics anyone?) but my fic is not like that, I wanted them to be overcoming a social separation (rich-poor) not species (demon-human) And to speak the truth, I never really needed an explaination…
(Takes deep breath)
Hope that answered your question.
