InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Moving Up in the World ❯ Red Roses ( Chapter 20 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

A/N: Hello, finally the long awaited Christmas Banquet. I hope you all remember this is taking place a little before Christmas so no “Where is Santa!”s from all of ya. I hope you enjoy it. I really liked it.

Rin awoke with a start. She was not in her bed. After having a quick look around, she realized she was on the couch. Then she remembered, she must have passed out on the couch, she had been very tired. And then she noticed she was covered in a blanket. Surely she hadn't gotten that herself? She didn't even recognize it. It must have been Sesshoumaru….

Yesterday had been a swirl of placemats, wineglasses, and tablecloths. Izayoi surely was a wonder woman to be able to do all that. All of the decorations had been in traditional feudal style. They would all feel like Old time Lords and Ladies. It had all been so lovely. The thought struck her; tonight was the night… She had a lot to do.

She ran herself a hot bath in her large tub. She was surprised to find a full array of amenities you might find useful during a bath. After a good hour-long soak she set all her things up and prepared for a nap. She had a feeling that they would be up fairly late that night. Or at least, she hoped she would.

She awoke from a good, long nap to find that it was nearly noon. She felt flutters of anticipation for the coming night. She may not be going with Sesshoumaru, but she might just get to dance with him. Rin could not fathom who his date would be. No doubt she would be gorgeous in that ravishing way that Rin knew she couldn't compare to.

Rin made her way into the kitchen for something to eat. To her surprise, Sesshoumaru was there. At first, she was embarrassed because all she had on was the slip to her dress and an open housecoat, but then she saw how he looked and forgot all about that. He had his tuxedo pants on and no shirt. Rin stopped where she was and let her hands fall to her sides.

“I ordered some takeout, it will be a long time till be eat tonight.” He said almost cheerfully, if it was possible for him to be cheerful anyway. Perhaps `benign' was a better expression to fit Sesshoumaru.

“Oh, thanks.” Rin slid to the counter to scope out the food.

It was some Japanese restaurant's lighter dishes. She was grateful; she was hardly in the mood for say, Mexican. After making her plate she looked at Sesshoumaru once again. He looked godly without a shirt. He was perfectly defined in every way. Her eyes burnt holes into his abdomen. When her eyes traveled lower, she blushed and took a seat at the table.

Sesshoumaru threw on his white button-down shirt. Rin was relieved that he didn't button it. He made his way to sit down across from her. She could see he was in a rare mood, one minute cheerful, and the next, solemn, she could only guess that he was thinking of something.

Sesshoumaru

Sesshoumaru did not miss the fact that Rin was staring at him. He didn't know what he felt about this, in one way, he felt very, very, disturbingly pleased. On the other he felt like he was…. Well, that's the problem, there wasn't much of another side.

He sat down across from her and began eating. She looked stunning as always. He didn't really want to think of how she would look tonight, when he had to be with Kagura. He was lost deep within his mind until he heard a buzz that he knew was the doorbell. Who could it be? He went to the door and held the intercom.

“Who is it?” he said gruffly.

“Sesshie, darling, its me, Kagura.” Said the intercom.

“What the hell are you doing here? It's only one thirty!” He yelled through the buzzer.

“Sess, Narraku says that you must make me happy tonight, otherwise that Inu-hanyou brother of yours shall be history.” She said reproachfully.

“Fine.” He buzzed her up.

He knew that this would certainly have consequences. He realized slowly that Rin was in the kitchen and no doubt that is where Kagura would end up. He rubbed his temples; this is not what he wanted to happen.

“Hello, Sesshoumaru.” A seductive voice filled the doorway.

He turned slowly, unprepared for what he would see next. There in the doorway was Kagura in the outright sluttiest thing he had ever seen. She was leaning on the doorway. Her dress was black leather, it just went below her upper thighs. And it was cut low, very very very low. He could very nearly see her nipples. His stomach rumbled with impending doom.

He said nothing and simply walked back into the kitchen, where he knew he must face Rin. Kagura clung to his arm like a wet limpet. He only wished he could simply kill her, he knew in the end he would. Rin was at the table reading a book while she ate her meal. He compared the two women, besides just being more innocent and moral than Kagura, Rin was so much more beautiful. Sesshoumaru hated to admit it, but even without any makeup and in a bathrobe she outshined Kagura like the sun to a candle.
Rin finally looked up to him and the beast woman. He immediately saw her face drop. A second after taking all of Kagura in, she dropped the spoon right out of her mouth. The expression in her eyes was worth so many words. He felt like he was betraying her.

“Oh, you must be the new personal assistant.” Kagura said spitefully while rubbing Sesshoumaru's arm.

“Yes.” Rin squeaked.

“I am Kagura, Sesshoumaru's dream woman.” She said haughtily while daring Sesshoumaru to correct her. He wouldn't take the bait.

“I…see…” Rin whispered. Sesshoumaru bit his lip.

Rin

Rin was fully aware that even though she was lifting the fork to her mouth quite often, that it rarely made it there. She had to have piles of rice on the table by now. She wished there were some polite way to run away. Kagura was alternately cooing into Sesshoumaru's ear and saying horrible things aloud. Rin did her best just to nod. Sesshoumaru's face probably the most impassive she had ever seen it. She could not get even an inkling as to what he was feeling.

“I'm done, thank you for the meal Sesshoumaru-sama, I better get ready now.” she said meekly as she made a move for the door.

Once she had reached the confines of her room she slid to the floor. She took a deep breath and felt tears sliding down her face. Kagura was so different than Rin, if that was what he wanted, that she would never compare…Rin took another deep breath and wiped her eyes, this wasn't the end of the world, she might just still prove her worth.

Inuyasha

“Why are you making me go with Kagome anyway?” Inuyasha said contemptuously as Izayoi was brushing his hair.

“Honey, I rarely ask you for anything, just give her a chance.” Izayoi cooed.

“Alright, but if this ruins my business plans I am not going to be happy,” he said gruffly.

“That's my boy.” She said as she tweaked his ear and started walking away. “Call her and tell her when you'll pick her up.”

“Feh.” Inuyasha said to no one in particular.

Izayoi

Izayoi had her beautiful golden silk dress on. She had finally decided to move on to the more classical dresses instead of scandalous. She was still beautiful and more than capable of wearing them, but she knew she must give the limelight to the new set of girls. Kagome and Rin could shine tonight; Izayoi already had her man.

She was wondering when Rin would show up, it was nearly four.

Rin

Rin stepped back from the mirror. It was more than true to say she was gorgeous. She looked fantastic in her dress; it really was perfect for her, its pink highlighting the pink in her pale skin. She had done her makeup perfectly. She hadn't put much on, but she had gone heavier with the eyeliner and lipstick.

She even had the perfect earrings, they where dangling pink lotus flowers that made her look so lady-like. Her strappy shoes looked gorgeous with her calf-length dress. She had left her hair down and put waves ion it to make it fuller. She doubted she could look better.

She made her way into the rest of the house, cautious of the whore, Kagura. She stepped lightly upon the carpet, hoping for a clear run to a taxi, but there he was. He was breathtaking. His white hair made a brilliant contrast against the black tuxedo. His face was still impassive, but she could see he was taking her in, just as she was taking him in.

Sesshoumaru

Sesshoumaru just stood there. She was more beautiful than he thought was possible. He was unprepared for her. She was standing there, looking up at him with an unreadable look. He wished he didn't have to go with Kagura. To speak of the devil, here she came.

“Sesshie dear, when will we- Oh…. Is that the girl form earlier?” Kagura stammered as she laid eyes on Rin.

“Yes, this is her.” Sesshoumaru stated almost pridefully. Rin's eyes glistened.

“I think I should be going…” Rin whispered so Kagura couldn't hear.

“I will…call you a cab…” Sesshoumaru almost offered to drive her, but he realized the Porsche could only hold two.

“Thank you.” Rin whispered before rustling past him to head down the building.

Rin

Through many deep breaths, Rin had managed not to ruin her makeup with tears. She reached the curbside when she saw a limo. Wha-? Rin had no clue who it could be, until she saw Kouga pop out of the sun roof with a big bouquet. Rin heaved a sigh. It might be a dream come true to many, but it only seemed a burden to her.

“Rin my woman, you look ravishing tonight.” He crooned, his ponytail flying in the wind.

Rin didn't say a word, she just silently got into the long vehicle. Kouga greeted her with a sloppy kiss and champagne. Rin acted politely as possible. He was acting as if he owned her adjusting her dress and hair. Rin was all too happy to arrive to the Christmas banquet.

Rin was absolutely shocked to find herself greeted by a red carpet and mass of photographers. She supposed she should have known this would make the paparazzi swarm.

“Mr. Wolf! Mr. Wolf! Who is this young beauty!” The garbled message of the crowd came out. Kouga leapt at the chance to talk to them, while Rin shrunk against herself.

“This is my woman, Rin.” He said suavely as he clutched her possessively. He posed with her and the photographers went wild with flashes. Rin was very relieved when Izayoi came out and saved her from the masses.

“Rin honey, you are so beautiful…” Izayoi whispered as she hugged Rin in the entrance's shelter, away from the flashing lights.

“Not like you!” Rin said as she accessed Izayoi, who looked glorious in her golden gown. “You are gorgeous!” Rin took in the tall, regal woman.

Izayoi had trailing metallic gold gown on and a white stole. She had her hair up with a gold brooch and gold dusted makeup to match. Her pitch black hair and dark brown eyes gleamed with intent. Rin could tell this was a big night for Izayoi.

“Come with me Rin.” Izayoi took Rin's hand and led her to the big door, which was being guarded by two big burly men.

“Mrs. Takahashi,” One held the door open for them.

They were greeted with hundreds of faces turned to see them. The different colors of gowns and droves of tuxed men overwhelmed Rin. Rin looked around the glorious banquet hall and felt an intense feeling of déjà vu, but she let it pass as she was dragged by Izayoi to see Inutaisho.

Rin had to admit that he did clean up nice. He looked wonderful in his tuxedo as he presided over all the people. He had a red rose pinned to his tuxedo. She then noticed Izayoi did too.

“What are the flowers for?” Rin asked.

“Well, they are tradition. Red means the person is in love, and white means the person is looking for one to love.” Izayoi explained as she produced a white one for Rin.

“Oh I see.” Rin sighed as Izayoi pinned it to her.

“Well Rin, I have to go continue playing hostess, but I will be back when the eating begins.” Izayoi said cheerfully as she patted Rin on the back.

“Have you seen Sesshoumaru?” Inutaisho asked levelly.

“Oh, yes he and his…date were at the apartment together when I left.” Rin said careful to choose the right words.

“And his date?” Inutaisho prodded.

“She's…interesting.” Rin supplied hesitatingly.

“I see,” Inutaisho looked thoughtful. “Here's Inuyasha.”

Rin followed his gaze to find Inuyasha. She sighed as she realized that the Takahashi's were probably the most gorgeous family ever. Inuyasha looked like some type of god in his armani tux. He was followed by a gorgeous woman in a floor length red gown. Rin realized it was Kagome.

“Rin, you look gorgeous!” Kagome squealed as she met Rin.

“Kagome, you are absolutely perfect.” Rin said reverently.

“Some one gonna tell me how pretty I look? Then we can all squeal and giggle.” Inuyasha said in a very sarcastic voice.

“Doesn't Rin look pretty?” Kagome asked him demandingly. He looked at Rin through one eye.

“Yes, yes. Okay. So she looks pretty good, not that my stupid brother will notice.” Inuyasha huffed.

“Where is Sesshoumaru?” Kagome asked.

“He is with his…date.” Rin replied.

“Date?” Inuyasha asked skeptically.

“Yes.” Rin stated.

“But he hasn't dated any one in forever, maybe sleep with them, but not date.” Inuyasha said louder than necessary.

“Inuyasha.” Inutaisho said reprimandingly.

“What? It's true, the only woman he's ever shown any interest, other than carnally, is Rin.” Inuyasha spat angrily. Rin looked to the ground.

“Stop it. This isn't necessary.” Kagome hushed Inuyasha.

Rin gave a polite smile and walked away. She crossed her arms and took a deep breath. This was all so surreal. She had been a homeless girl, doomed to wander the cold streets, until Sesshoumaru had stepped in and changed her fate. It was as if he had given her back her life. But why wasn't she satisfied? She knew why. She didn't have Sesshoumaru. And no matter what, she would never be happy without him.

Sango

“Miroku! We shouldn't be doing this!” Sango pleaded as Miroku pressed his lips to hers once again. They were in the back of his car in the parking lot.

“Sango, you know I love you.” He whispered in her ear.

“We'll be late for the banquet!” She said with waning distress.

“So? No one will notice.” He said softly as he unzipped the back of her dress.

“Miroku… we are in the car!” she mewed hopelessly.

“I know, but I love you.” He said gruffly as he unsnapped her bra.

“You are a hopeless hentai!” She whispered harshly as she unzipped his fly.

“I know, but you love me.” He said before he pressed his mouth against hers. Sango replied with an angry moan against his mouth.

Rin

“Rin. No need to fret.” A manly voice told her. She looked up excitedly, only to find Kouga.

“Oh, hello Kouga.” She said disappointedly.

“Are you thirsty? I shall get you some champagne.” Kouga said as he began to stride away.

Rin shivered and pulled up her shawl. Where was Sesshoumaru anyway? Rin thought the festivities were about to begin. As soon as she thought it, an icy breath fell against the back of her neck.

“Thought you could get him, now didn't you?” Kagura's snide voice made her spine tingle. Rin turned around to face a very satisfied looking Kagura.

“I never presumed that much.” Rin said steadily.

“You know you want him. It's just too bad, he isn't interested in little homeless girls.” Kagura whispered into her ear. Rin stiffened. How did she know?

Suddenly a chime rung out. Rin was literally saved by the bell. Rin looked towards the source to see Inutaisho and Sesshoumaru standing on a platform before a sheath of red velvet.

“Please take a seat everyone.” Inutaisho's voice, magnified by a microphone, said as he gestured towards hundreds of little four or five-seater tables.

They had been tastefully adorned with a white tablecloth and an appropriate amount of silverware. A familiar waiter came and escorted Rin to a table in the front. Rin noticed it was Shippo. He looked fine in a waiter's uniform.

“Hey Miss Rin.” He said as he took her arm and led her to a long, thin table in the very front.

She saw it had all the important business people seated at it. Kagome and Inuyasha were seated at it. As well as Kouga, who appeared to be talking to Kagome. She also saw Kikyo, Kagura, and a tall, dark man.

Rin was seated near Izayoi and Inuyasha. She didn't really want to sit by Kouga, whom appeared to be flirting with Kagome. Inuyasha didn't seem to be pleased by this. In fact, he seemed rather violent.

Everybody was just getting settled when they all heard the large door creak open and a blast of cold air flew in. Seconds later Miroku came striding in, looking rather pleased. He was followed by a very flushed looking Sango.

“Sorry We're late everyone.” Miroku said lazily as he pulled out a chair and sat legs spread.

“Why are you late?” Kagome asked Sango, who flashed a fuchsia shade.

“Um…Traffic?” She supplied as she adjusted her dress.

“Sango, if the traffic was bad, then we'd all be late too.” Kagome said as she looked suspiciously at Sango, who only twisted her hands in the hem of her skirt.

“Way to go,” Inuyasha said deeply as he gave Miroku a manly arm lock.

“Hey, it's love.” Miroku said reverently.

“Now I'd like to start the annual speeches. Eh?” Inutaisho said, gathering everyone's attention off the new couple. Sango was all too happy for the relief, though Kagome showed no sign of letting up.

“This year was another highly productive year, as always.” Inutaisho said to the crowd. “There were some important breakthroughs in the technology department as well as some highly beneficial customer service additions. But what I would most like to talk about are the most recent events of this quarter. However, I believe the best person to tell you about that is the Vice President of the company and my eldest son, Sesshoumaru Takahashi.” Inutaisho gave over the microphone as the audience clapped.

“Good evening.” Sesshoumaru said in that voice she could die just to hear. “As you all know, I have recently been made Vice President of West Oni Corporation. This year has been another wonderful year and we have continued out climb to the top and above. This last quarter has brought some major business deals. Mr. Wolf of Oogami industries has made a deal with security with us.” He gestured towards Kouga, who was still arguing with Inuyasha.

Rin couldn't help but be at awe. Sesshoumaru was so in control. His prowess was very evident as he made the whole crowd bow down to him. Rin was giving him her full attention. Then his gaze fell onto her. His golden eyes held her and made her feel as if there was no one else but them.

“The most important thing that has happened to West Oni is a proposition made to us by Ms. Kikyo Shard. She has proposed a project that has consumed a lot of time at West Oni. My brother, Inuyasha has been assisting her. And with this project came the help of Kagome, an expert analyst who can do wonders.” He gestured towards her and she blushed.

“I as well have received a new helper, Miss Rin, a better personal assistant, I have never had.” He said with an odd air. He looked to her and so did the rest of the audience. She smiled.

“This new project hopes to become a new revolution and effect all our lives. I hope you are all planning on attending the spring benefit, where it will be revealed.” He finished as he handed the microphone to Myoga.

Myoga continued to inform them all of every little going on with his own opinions included, procuring quite a few laughs from the audience. Rin, however, was fixated on Sesshoumaru, who had gone to sit by Kagura. Rin sighed deeply and found little comfort in Kagome's patting hand. Soon enough, Myoga had finished and dinner was being served. She was blessed with the opportunity to overhear the gang's friendly banter.

“Who is that slut anyway?” Inuyasha asked.

“That is Kagura, his old secretary.” Miroku said in his sagely way.

“Yeah, I remember, she is nothin' but a ho bag.” Inuyasha said uncouthly.

“Shouldn't we talk about something else?” Kagome said angrily as she saw Rin's drooping face.

“Like how Miroku and Sango got it on?” Inuyasha teased.

“We did no such thing!” Sango said outraged.

“Um, yes we did.” Miroku said smoothly. Sango promptly smacked him.

“So you did?” Kagome asked secretively.

“Ah…perhaps…” Sango said while twisting her hands.

“You did! I just knew you two loved each other!” Kagome shouted in a celebratory manner.

Suddenly Rin's attention was called by a gust of spicy wind. She looked up. Sesshoumaru was walking by and looking at her. Somehow she knew he wanted her to follow him. She got up and briskly walked after him.

“Heh, heh, looks like someone else is gonna get lucky tonight.” She heard Miroku say in the distance. She also heard Sango's smack.

“You did not `get lucky'!” Sango shrieked.

Rin followed him down a long white marble hall. He was far ahead of her, but she knew where she was going. She just didn't know why she knew where she was going. She noticed beautiful tapestries and ancient art adorning the walls. She was heading to the head of the building. She felt a sense of climax, as if something were coming to completion. She came upon a door with painted glass. She knew this was it. She timidly twisted the knob and pushed it open.

There he was. He was leaning against an altar of some sort. It was a dark room and his face was shadowed behind his hair. She stepped forward. He had something in his hand, two red roses. He looked up and their eyes met.

“It's tradition during this banquet, you know, that if one is in love, that they wear a red rose.” He whispered. The tall ceilings carried his voice and caused an echo. “Are you in love, Rin?” He asked simply.

“Yes.” She closed the distance between them. Wordlessly he replaced her rose with the red one. “Are you, Sesshoumaru?” she asked.

“Yes.” He brought his mouth onto hers and they kissed. Short, sweet, and chaste, but it was more than enough for Rin.

“Go now, Rin, we must return to the banquet.” He said as he looked down into her eyes.

Rin turned and left. She was shaking. Such a quiet, soft moment, she would remember forever. Sesshoumaru had said he loved her. Could it be true? Before she knew it, she was back into the main chamber and all eyes were on her. She only hoped the red rose would remain unnoticed.

She finally reached her seat and for the first time, it seemed, breathed. She looked over and noticed everyone's attention, or at least that of her table's was still on her. She looked around and smiled, most were satisfied and went back to their conversations. Izayoi, though, reached across the table and fingered the red rose. Rin exchanged teary smiles with her.

“It is now time for dancing!” Inutaisho, who obviously had been having some drinks, shouted.

Kouga had long since abandoned Rin. She wasn't sure what exactly she was going to do for the rest of the night. Sesshoumaru was still with Kagura and everyone else had his or her partners. Rin wandered over to the large glass punch bowl and moped around. She was pleased to see Sesshoumaru `checking' on her every now and then out of the corner of his eye.

“Hello, lovely lady.” A very deep, dark voice said to her.

“Um…hello.” Rin replied to the dark man who had been sitting at the head table earlier. “Who are you?”

“I, am Narraku.” He stated. “And you are Miss Rin.”

“Yes.” She confirmed. She hoped to catch a glance of Sesshoumaru, but he was nowhere to be seen.

“I run my own company, we have… dealings with West Oni.” He explained as he moved in front of her line of sight.

“I see.” She said impatiently.

“Come with me, I have something to show you. Your boss asked for your presence.” Narraku interjected.

“Oh, did he? I have a beeper, I'm sure if he would have needed me, he would just beep." Rin replied, but before she could finish her beeper went off.

“See? Come with me.” He said roughly as he grabbed her arm. She didn't feel like she could argue.

He led her outside, to a parked car. It was dark, and snowy. She rather wished she could run, but Narraku still had a tight grip on her. She panicked and started to scream. What if he meant to hurt her? He overpowered her and threw her into the back seat. She banged her head and lost consciousness.

Sesshoumaru

Sesshoumaru had no idea what Kagura meant to do, she had led him back into the kitchens, where she had begun undressing. Sesshoumaru didn't like the idea of being out of the sight of Rin and immediately began to protest. Kagura did not want to let him go. Something seemed suspicious.

He ran back into the main hall and didn't see Rin. He ran outside, causing quite a stir. Once outside all he saw was a black car speeding away. Kagura caught up with him.

“You're too late, she's already dead.” Kagura said before giving way to a fit of sinister laughs.

TBC!!!

A/n: I know what you are all thinking! This is the same damn plot of all the other Sess/Rin's out there!!! But I assure you, that it is not, just wait, you'll see. I have quite a few twists up my sleeve. It isn't just Narraku uses Rin as a weakness to get Sesshoumaru, Sess beats Narraku up and everybody goes home happy, I swear.

Anyways, PLEASE REVIEW! This is the climax chapter people, I need some feed back! I love ya!

I think you'll be surprised at where this is going, I'm rather proud of myself for thinking it up. Is it bad that most of the twists in this story come to me in dreams?

Next time on Moving Up in the World:

How did Narraku make Rin's beeper beep? Will Rin be killed? Will Sesshy kill Kagura? What about Jakken? He's been gone a while? And most importantly, Will Miroku get `lucky' again? (sorry, Miroku added that part) Find out, on the next exciting chapter of Moving Up in the World!!!
