Chapter 3 ~ Captured
A tall man with long black hair stared down at her. His hair seemed stiff and windblown giving him the `surfer' look, although Autumn highly doubted this man had ever surfed, let alone graced a beach with his presence. His skin was deathly pale and his eyes…they seemed red now, but that had to be a trick of the moonlight.
She swallowed, trying to gather the courage to talk to this mysterious stranger. After several tries and releasing nothing but air, Autumn finally managed to utter the words, “I think I'm lost. Do you think you could help me?”
At first the man said nothing and Autumn considered repeating the question, wondering if he'd even heard it. That wouldn't have surprised her. This guy terrified her, all though she didn't know why. She was having trouble controlling the volume of her voice. He didn't give her the chance to repeat herself. In a cold slow voice he said, “Girl, what is your association with the miko wench?”
Autumn returned his gaze boldly. This man was trying to stare her down, but she would have none of it. He had already intimidated her once, she would not allow the same mistake to happen again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Instead of cowering she said, “Miko wrench? What is that? Some kind of newfangled tool?”
The man's eyes narrowed, “So you wish to play games? If you do, I must warn you. You play by my rules.”
Once more, Autumn began to feel afraid. He radiated insanity. “I-I have no idea what you're talking about,” she said, hating herself for the tremor that had crept into her voice.
“Yes,” he said. “I think you have a very good idea of what I'm talking about.” Suddenly, he yanked her up by the scruff of her shirt and said, “DO NOT LIE TO ME!”
Dully, Autumn realized that she was being lifted off the ground and he didn't even appear to be exerting himself. That scared her. “Look,” she said gently, trying to go by his rules. “I don't know what a miko wrench is. Perhaps if you explained to me…”
“I EXPLAIN MYSELF TO NO ONE, WENCH!” he roared, voice rising every minute.
Great, now I'm a wrench too. Maybe we can all go to the great tool shed in the sky…
Suddenly, the man appeared to see her for the first time and his smile became almost friendly. If you can call a possibly homicidal maniac with a grin like Santa Claus crossed with Jaws friendly then sure, why not?
“Never mind,” the man said, setting her back down on the ground, but still not releasing his grip. “There will be plenty of time for explanations later. Finally, after all these years of searching…you are perfect.” He left that bit of information for her to chew on while he pulled on a white baboon costume.
“Is it Halloween already?” Autumn asked, before she could stop herself.
The man had his mask on, so she couldn't read his expression, but she guessed he was grinning that psycho grin again. Without a word he gathered her into his arms and started floating. Were they floating? Autumn wasn't sure. There were all these weird reddish purple clouds around her and it was making her feel sick and a little sleepy. She soon realized she was exhausted, so snuggling against his warm costume, Autumn fell asleep.
