Chapter 7 ~ Arrow
Autumn's breath stuck in her throat. Get it out? Is he going to gut me like a fish to get that shard? One look into Inuyasha's determined eyes told her, yes, that was exactly what he was planning. The youkai blood boiled and she said, “Yeah? Well, I'm not going down without a fight!”
Inuyasha smiled slightly. “Now that, I can do.”
To Autumn's surprise, her transformation had made her faster than she could ever have hoped to be when she was human. The woman had a giant boomerang and the monk had his weird staff, but those were no match for Autumn's speed. All I have to worry about is Inuyasha.
An arrow whizzed by Autumn as she ducked a blow from the tetsusaiga. She looked over her shoulder and saw Kagome, her friend Kagome, shooting arrows at her! Autumn looked away so that Inuyasha would not see the hurt in her eyes. Perhaps it was because her friend did not recognize her in this state? Thanks to Naraku, her own mother probably wouldn't recognize her.
“Kagome, it's me Au--
“Die!” Inuyasha shouted, lashing out with that giant sword again.
Doesn't he ever get tired? She wondered.
The sword just clipped the front of her yakuta landing a shallow cut on Autumn's side. Autumn stumbled and that moment of weakness and hesitation provided Kagome with the perfect shot for her arrow. She fired and hit Autumn's shoulder. Her arm began to go numb and Autumn's eyes widened in fear. “What's happening?” she cried.
“That is a purification arrow,” Inuyasha said. “In a matter of moments, it will battle the youki in your body and you will fall into a deep sleep…”
“NO!” Autumn got to her feet and started to run. If I fall asleep… Then she was as good as dead. It was as simple as that. Just like those Goosebumps books: (don't go to sleep…) She started to shiver.
Inyasha didn't bother chasing after her. “Go on and run. The more you move, the more you allow the arrow's power to circulate. I'll just wait here for you to take your little nap.”
Damn it! I'm gonna lose!
She ran blindly, and then heard someone say, “Fleeing? After I told you to stay and fight? That would not be wise, Hanyou. Unless you wish to die…”
Autumn skidded to a stop as Naraku appeared in front of her. Great, I've got nowhere to go with Naraku in front of me and that psycho demon guy close behind.
She collapsed on the ground, the arrow already taking affect. Naraku knelt beside her and said, “Now what's this? Is the miko's arrow too much for you? I'm disappointed, aisuru. Here I was, thinking you would be strong and then you disappoint me by being so weak.”
Autumn's eyes snapped open. “Don't call me that!”
“What?” he asked, laughing. “Aisuru? But you are my darling little hanyou.” He gripped the arrow in his hand and pulled, making Autumn scream. “Damare!” he said. “Silence. I am trying to help you, hanyou. You should be greatful.”
“It…hurts…” she muttered, threatening to sink into unconsciousness.
Naraku gave the arrow another tug, eliminating any chance of Autumn falling asleep, and eventually pulled the arrow free. “Daijoubu kai?” he mocked, shaking the bloody arrow at her. “You should be more careful.”
Autumn gave him a withering look as he helped her up, wondering what he was plotting. “What are you scheming, Naraku?”
He chuckled. “Can't have my little fighter passed out, can I? No dear, not when there are battles to be faught.” She tried to swing at him, but he caught her elbow. Over her shoulder he shouted towards the group, “So, what do you think of my newest plaything?”
“Pitifully weak,” Inuyasha snorted. “She's not even a whole demon.”
“Ah…I see…and is the pedigree of a demon really all that determines strength, mutt?” Naraku asked, glaring daggers at Inuyasha. “I, myself, am a half-breed and hanyou and yukai alike fear me. Moreover, you are always saying that you are better than your full-blooded brother are you not? So either you are too fool-minded to create a solid opinion or this is just another example of typical dog demon arrogance.”
Inuyasha's eyes filled with white-hot rage. “You bastard!”
“Perhaps this…hypocrisy is due to the fact that you fear my little neko girl?” Naraku suggested. “After all, you managed to weasel your way out of a battle with the cat youkai before. Is this situation any different?”
Autumn tried to squirm out of Naraku's grip. What the hell is he doing? He's going to get us both killed!
“I didn't fight in that battle because THAT BITCH KIKYO SEALED ME TO A GODDAM TREE WITH AN ARROW!”
“Is that so?” Naraku said. “Are you certain it was the arrow holding you back?”
Inuyasha had had enough. “All right, that's it,” he said, approaching them. “I'll kill you, you bastard. But first…I'm going to kill her.”
Naraku's grin widened and he disappeared, leaving Autumn to fight this battle…alone.
Damare - silence!
Daijoubu kai - are you okay?
Aisuru - sweetheart (Naraku's using it to mock her)
