Chapter 8 ~ The Rage of Inuyasha

Inuyasha watched Naraku disappear and then whirled around to face Autumn. His eyes were murderous with tears coursing down his cheeks. “I have had much pain in my life,” he says, unsheathing the tetsusaiga, “So much pain.” His eyes turned towards Autumn, brimming with more tears and fury, “MOST OF WHICH WAS CAUSED BY THAT BASTARD YOU CALL YOUR MASTER!”

Autumn opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out.

Inuyasha stared at the sword he held in his hands. “My mother and father are dead. My only kin in this world wishes for me to be extinguished from the very surface of this earth. And why is that?” He raised his eyes to Autumn's face and says, “You know why? Because I'm a hanyou. Every time my brother--half brother, I'll grant him that much--looks at me, it's as if he's stepped in something foul. So I tried to find the next best thing. I tried to find love, but Naraku would not allow that simple pleasure. He turned Kikyo and me against each other…and why? Because of that jewel. I wanted the jewel too because maybe if I became a whole demon…my brother would not hate me.”

He continued staring down at his sword. “All I wanted was to be happy. But no…the half-breed Inuyasha is a jerk. Every time I tried to be serious it's always `Inuyasha, go away!'” A growl escapes his clenched teeth. “This sword is a legacy from my father. With it, I have learned that when I cast away this sword, I cast away my humanity.” He shot Autumn a sideways look, “And I can kill without regret.”

“What about your friends?” Autumn cried. “Don't they make you happy?” She was beginning to understand what he was getting at, the raw truth. The truth hurts…but this scared her.

“Feh! Yes! My friends make me happy. But did you or did you not come here to take them away from me too? I will not allow it. So for that…Prepare to die!” With that, he cast away the tetsusaiga. His friends had caught on to what he was doing and said, “INUYASHA! NOOOOOOOO!”

He didn't listen to them. Autumn wondered if he could even hear them anymore. Even now, a rapid transformation was occurring. Purple markings grew on his cheeks and his eyes turned a red color that reminded her of a snake…and his claws. They had been sharp before, but now it looked as though he had twin sets of Freddy Krueger gloves on. “Afraid?” he asked with a sneer.

Yes, she was afraid. She couldn't fight this monster! Never in a million years. So instead of fighting, Autumn turned tail and ran.

“You can't run,” the inu-youkai called out. “Not when your master ordered you to stay and fight.”

“Naraku is not my master!” Autumn shouted.

A new voice joined them. “Inuyasha!” Kagome shouted, out of breath from trying to keep up, “You've lost control!”

“Silence wench!” Inuyasha said. “That is none of your concern.”

Kagome stopped running and stared after him, looking like she'd just been slapped. “Inu…Inu…yasha…”

Autumn raced for the forest, but Inuyasha had other plans. With his claws, he swiped down a massive tree that fell upon Autumn's waist effectively pinning her and knocking the wind out of her. If she had been human she most certainly would've been killed. Autumn groaned, feeling what felt like blood drip down her chin and hoped that nothing vital had been damaged. Not that it would make much of a difference, she thought, seeing the Inu-Youkai approaching.

With Autumn immobile, Inuyasha took his time getting to her. “It hurts, doesn't it? This is how I feel on the inside all the time. You are feeling my pain.”

She flexed her claws in pain. “You fool! Can't you see what you're doing? You're becoming just like the…creatures…that upset you so much in the first place!”

That threw him for a moment. Inuyasha stopped walking for a few moments and actually thought this over. Autumn thought… she hoped that she might have seen a little flicker of humanity in his eyes. In the next instant in was gone and Inuyasha said, “Lies. A clever lie spun in the same manner the spider spins his web. Just like…Naraku.”

In that moment two things happened. 1) Inuyasha leapt at Autumn, claws extended and 2) a burst of emotion and fear raced through Autumn's body. Suddenly, there was a bolt of blue light that shot from Autumn's fingertips and sent Inuyasha back. Kagome raced towards him, cradling his head in her lap and placed two fingers under his chin to check his pulse.

Autumn felt her heart begin to ache at the tenderness of this scene (either that, or one of my ribs is poking into my lung). “Is he okay?” she cried. “I didn't mean to hurt him. I didn't know that I could do that I just…” she broke off as Kagome looked at her, expecting anger or sadness. Perhaps both. Instead, Kagome wore an expression of confusion and gratitude.

“Inuyasha will be fine. That bolt of power…had the same aura as the shikon no tama in its purified state.” She glanced at Inuyasha in wonder, “You erased his feelings of hatred…what are you? That is no power of Naraku's.”

“My name is Autumn,” she said sadly. “And I am a cat youkai.”

Kagome's jaw dropped. “Autumn? Could it be…?”

“Well done,” Naraku said, choosing that moment to appear. “You came out the winner, although much of your tactics seemed to be composed entirely of running away.” He knelt down beside her and said, “What an interesting predicament you've gotten yourself into now, my pet. You're in worse condition than the last time I found you.”

“Shut up, you bastard!” Autumn shouted.

“Well,” Naraku said. “I guess you can just get that tree off you by yourself…if you don't bleed to death first, that is.”

Autumn spat blood at his feet. “I'd rather die than serve the likes of you.”

Naraku shrugged, “Your choice,” then walked over to where Kagome cradled the sleeping dog demon. She shivered when she felt his shadow upon her and glanced towards her bow, far beyond her reach. She had dropped it to get to Inuyasha before he hurt himself…or that girl.

“You…if you touch him!”

He smiled, flashing fangs, and said, “I will not harm him, miko. At least not right now. For what fun is it to kill your enemy as he sleeps when he cannot gaze into the eyes of he who steals his life's force?” Naraku gazed back at the trapped neko-youkai and said, “I will leave you at this point. We shall meet again if you don't come crawling back first.”

“Oh, you wish,” Autumn muttered, feeling a burning sensation rise through her chest. Yes…something was definitely poking, if not puncturing, her lung. Probably some internal bleeding, too with my luck, she thought.

She was distracted as Kagome touched her arm and whispered, “Who are you?”
