Chapter 11 ~ Midoriko: Origin of the Shikon no Tama

Autumn sighed and sat on a rock. When had life become so confusing? What was the point of no return?

It was the well… I never should've gone in. I should've left well enough alone… no pun intended.

She reached into her shirt and pulled out the shard. When she touched it, it glowed a faint blue. The light captivated Autumn, and made her feel safe and warm. I have to protect it ,she thought. This…whatever this is, this is real. She sat staring at the necklace for several moments longer when she heard the footsteps of someone who wishes to remain unseen. Autumn turned around instantly, tucking the necklace back into her shirt.

“Oh! Inuyasha! What do you want?”

“You have good hearing,” he said bitterly. “Good to know.”

Autumn's eyes narrowed, “Were you…spying on me? Surely you trust me by now. I mean really!”

“I don't trust mikos.”

“Well that's your problem. And besides, you seem awfully friendly with that Kago-” Autumn was cut off as a hand clamped down over her mouth. She bit it making him draw back in pain. “What are you-”

“Shut the hell up!” he hissed. “We're being watched.”

Autumn froze, immediately resisting all struggles. Hand over her mouth, Inuyasha crept slowly towards the edge of the trees and said, “Aw crap. Not him…”

Not him who?

Then possibly the most gorgeous man she had ever seen stepped out from the trees. “Sesshoumaru,” Inuyasha growled.

The man looked at him, a glimmer of irritation in his eyes. Then he saw Autumn, looked her over and dismissed her, just as quickly as he had with Inuyasha. She couldn't help but feel a little insulted. She may not have been gorgeous, but she sure as hell wasn't that bad to look at either. “Who is that?” she asked Inuyasha, deciding now was as good a time as ever for a temporary truce.

“My half brother,” he said back. “He's a real pain in the-”

“INUYASHA! HAVE YOU SEEN AUTUMN? KAEDE FOUND HER SOME NEW…” Kagome broke off as she saw Sesshoumaru standing in front of her friends. “What on earth…?”

Sesshoumaru who had remained silent during this whole encounter said, “Added another miko to your collection, then?”

Inuyasha gave Sesshoumaru a look that could cause ice. “Shuddup, bastard.”

Sesshoumaru looked at her again. “At least she's not a human… Your standards are…slightly higher.”

“I'M NOT WITH HER!” Inuyasha shouted, just as Autumn shouted, “I'M NOT WITH HIM!” They both looked at each other in surprise and astonishment. In that moment, one could have mistaken them for brother and sister.

Kagome ran back with Miroku, Sango, and Kaede. “Demon,” Kaede said. “What ye be wanting here?”

He merely looked at her. “That is none of your concern.”

Inuyasha looked ready to attack just then, but Sesshoumaru turned and started walking away, silver hair swishing behind him. Autumn watched him go, and blushed when she realized she had been staring.

“Well,” Miroku said. “That was odd.”

“I wonder what he wanted,” Kagome said thoughtfully.

“Hai,” Kaede agreed, watching Autumn.

Autumn looked in a mirror, wearing a white haori with blue pants (like Kikyo's outfit except blue pants instead of red). “Is this really what I have to wear?”

“It looks great!” Kagome assured her.

“It does,” Miroku agreed, stepping closer, but Sango shot him a look that made him freeze in place.

“I guess…I could wear this,” Autumn said doubtfully. Her tail twitched slightly in agitation. The pants were so baggy and the haori was a little tighter than what she was used to, but it wasn't as if she could just pop into the nearest mall and buy jeans and a tee-shirt. “Thanks…”

Kaede said, “You know who ye be remindin' me of? Not in looks, but in spirit, ye remind me of the priestess Midoriko.”

There was a collective gasp, but Autumn just frowned in confusion. “Who was she?”

“She was the one who gave birth to the shikon no tama,” Sango said. “She was feared by all demons, so they decided to unite and create a monster demon that was said to be the biggest in the earth. They battled for seven days and seven nights and Midoriko was thoroughly weakened in battle.”

Miroko nodded and said, “Just as the demon began to devour her soul, she took the demon's soul into her body and expelled it, thus purifying it in the process. The result was the shikon jewel, or jewel of four souls. They say that Midoriko and that demon of demons are still fighting against one another in the stone and that it will take on the properties of he who carries it.”

“Wow,” Autumn said softly.

“Hai,” Kaede said. “You may be the only one who can purify that stone. I have never seen power such as yours in my entire life. Even my sister…wasn't quite up to the task. But she was noble. I'll give her that, gods rest her soul.”

“Oh?” Autumn asked. “Is she dead?”

“Not exactly,” Kaede said darkly. “She be like a walking corpse now, but Kagome be her living incarnation.”

“Can we go now?” Inuyasha asked gruffly, already heading in the direction of the door. If Autumn didn't know better, she would have said something was wrong with him. But she had witnessed the true rage of Inuyasha…first hand. An experience that she did not wish to repeat.

“Thank you very much, Kaede,” Kagome said with a respectful bow of her head. “We should probably be heading off, too.” She glanced over at Inuyasha hanging by the door and looked at Autumn. “Do you want to come with us?” she asked.

Autumn started to say yes, but Kaede shook her head and answered for her. “Nay, she will not be going with ye. She has much to learn…” To Autumn she said, “I have sent a messenger to Toto-Sai. He will be arriving tomorrow to judge ye for what type of weapon ye will be receiving.”

“M'kay,” Kagome said. “Bye Kaede! Bye Autumn!”

Autumn watched them disappear and couldn't help but wonder what tomorrow's events would bring…

Had to leave you with a little cliffhanger, here. I'm sorry. ^_^;; Gee I hope I didn't overdo the `ye' thing with Kaede. She's a hard character to impersonate. I wish I could give this story a soundtrack. I think the song `Just Communication' fits the mood I'm going for. Well, see ya'll later!
