Chapter 10 ~ The Perverted Monk/A New Miko

The ponytailed man Inuyasha called Miroku stood behind her with a plate of food. He looked happy.. a little too happy. Autumn watched him warily as he sat himself beside her.

“Hello lady demon,” he said with a smile. “I thought you might like some food.”

“Uh..okay…” she sniffed it, wondering if Inuyasha sent him to poison her. He sure didn't like her much, and after Naraku, she wasn't that eager to trust anyone.

As if reading her mind he said, “Do you not trust me enough to bring you supper, fair demon?”

Uh-oh… smart move, Autumn. Now I've just gone and hurt his feelings.

Trying to lesson both of their evident embarrassment Autumn said, “No I was just smelling it. It smells very good.”

He looked a little happier after that so she started eating it, some kind of meat with some roots.

“Kaede sent me to make sure you were up.”

Kaede… where did I hear that name?

As Autumn continued to eat, she felt something strange. She turned around and… MIROKU HAD HIS HAND ON HER BUTT! Autumn blushed about fifty shades of red. “W-what are you doing? HENTAI! Take it off, or I'll break it off!”

The monk withdrew his hand reluctantly and said, “Oh forgive me, lady demon, but won't you let me ask one small favor of you?”

“Depends on what that `small favor' is,” she retorted, wondering what he had up his sleeve and watching his hands for signs of wandering.

He grasped her hands in his and said, “Won't you honor me by bearing my children?”

Autumn stared at him, “What?”

He grinned, “I don't mind that you're a demon. I think it will actually be quite interesting.”

“You pervert! YOU HENTAI!” Autumn groped around the ground frantically, looking for something to hit the perverted monk with. The best she could come up with was the food tray he had brought. Before she could hurl the rice and veggies, a dark haired woman entered the hut.

She surveyed the scene going on and said, “I thought that's what the noise was.” She gave Autumn an apologetic look. “He can't keep his hands to himself, but don't mind him. He's harmless…”

“Sango!” Miroku cried out. “You look beautiful…but I know what would make you even more beautiful…”

Before he could continue, she slapped him on the face. Miroku drew back immediately, a red hand imprint glowing on his cheek. “Sango?” he says calmly, “Why did you hit me? Not that I mind or anything…but…”

Sango explodes, “I told you…several times…not to bother our patient. And what do you do? You take advantage of the situation. Gods, monk, are there no limits to your lechery?”

“I didn't think you were serious,” he admitted.

Autumn wondered if Sango could look any more murderous. She was beginning to feel a little scared, but the monk remained as cool as an ice cube.

“It's a pity the poor girl isn't well enough to give you the smacking you deserve.”

Miroku grinned at the prospect.

“OUT!” Sango said. “Or I'll make it so that you can never ask anyone to bear your children again.”

The monk left.

“I am so very sorry,” she says, bowing her head. “Both about Miroku AND Inuyasha.”

“Why are you apologizing?” Autumn asked. “You did nothing wrong.”

She sighed, “Because Inuyasha is too stubborn to apologize and Miroku…I don't think he even realizes that he's doing anything wrong.”

“Where am I?” Autumn asked.

“In Kaede's hut. She's sort of a priestess, but she won't talk to you until you're feeling better. Just stay here and I'll go tell Miroku to keep his grubby little paws to himself.”

Autumn smiled a bit thinking how friendly this group seemed. Well…maybe a little too friendly, she thought, remembering Miroku with a shudder. I think I need a good sleep…

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“You wanted to talk to me?” Autumn asked, rubbing the sleep dust from the corners of her eyes.

“Hai,” Kaede said. “Ye be demon, are ye not? And yet ye have all the power of the priestess who origionally carried the shard.”

“About that…I don't know what caused it. I'm sorry.”

“Sorry?” Kaede laughed, in great bellows. “Sorry ye need not be!”

“She wants to make you a priestess,” Kagome said. “Has there ever been a demon priestess before, Kaede?”

“Nay, they all be wanting to used the shard's power for themselves…but there be something strange about this girl. There be something almost divine about her.”

Autumn folded her hands in her lap. “I feel pretty stupid, but how would I be a priestess, and won't Naraku come looking for me if I've got the shards?”

“That's a risk ye will be needing to take.”

Autumn smiled tensely, looking at all the faces around her. Kagome's was interested, Sango's was sympathetic, Inuyasha wasn't even looking at her and Miroku…WINKED AT HER?! THE NERVE! She thought, cheeks heating up. “I really don't know what to say except…sure… I'll do it!”

“How many mikos do we need around here?” Inuyasha muttered loud enough for her to hear.

“SIT BOY!!!”

Kaede reached into a box and produced a necklace with shattered crystal fragments still attached to it. “This is all we could recover from Kikyo before she handed the shards over to Naraku. All you have to do is guard these shards from any demons, hanyous, or humans ye may come across.”

Autumn nodded, tucking the necklace into her yukata. It glowed a light blue at her touch, but no one except Kaede noticed. “I will. Won't I need a weapon?”

Miroku said, “We may be able to ask Toto-Sai. He has an armory in the mountains not far from here.”

“In the meantime, ye must know how to be a proper guardian. And ye needs new clothes as well. That dark yukata is just what a servant of Naraku would wear.”

Servant?!

“What colors should I wear?” Autumn asked, bristling once more at the term `servant.'

“White. It is a pure color.”

“Okay then…”

The meeting disbanded around that point and Autumn went out to the fields to contemplate her new career as the shard's protector. How could it have possibly ended up that she would end up guarding a stone that everyone was after? And it isn't even that pretty… she thought.
