Chapter 2: Never Alone

Kagome watched as the man stepped into the dim light of the well house. She gasped when she got to see his face up close. “Inu…No…InuYa…” was all she could get out before her eyes rolled back and she was engulfed by blackness. “Kagome!” InuYasha shouted as he stepped forward to catch her, upon catching her he turned her over to see if she was alright. After listening to her even breathing, he determined she had just fainted

InuYasha carefully lifted her into his arms and started out of the well house towards to main house. When he reached the door, he found it locked and with no one home to open it for him. “Where the hell is everyone? How the hell am I supposed to get in…wait?” `Does she still keep her window open, like she used to?' InuYasha stepped back and peered up at her bedroom window, holding Kagome a little tighter he leapt to the roof. After shifting her weight a little bit, InuYasha reached out to slide the window open. “She still keeps it open, -looking down at her he smiled- Thank You” InuYasha finished opening the window, stepped in, walked over to the bed, and placed her on it.

After he placed her on the bed he knelt down beside her, “I'm so sorry Kagome; I wasted so much time back then, I was such a fool,” he whispered before lying his head down on the bed. Waiting for her to wake up InuYasha fell asleep.

~Kagome's mind~

`InuYasha? I thought I saw InuYasha' Kagome thought as she sat up, “Where am I?” she asked as she stared out into the forest…`Wait Forest?'

“What do you mean `where am I', you're in feudal Japan. Where you have been for the past three years, where else would you be” Came the rough and all too familiar voice from behind her. Kagome felt a pain in her chest when she heard that voice, `No, no not again' Kagome refused to turn around and face this again. She had been having this dream for months now and it was always the same. “Come on Kagome we need to put the jewel back together, we just got the last two pieces back from Kouga. You need to purify it” the voice came again. “No” she said “What?” the voice asked now sounding harsher, “I said NO InuYasha, I won't do it; not again…I won't loose you again…I can't…” she heard a figure step closer “What are you talking about? How can you not want to do it again if you haven't done it a first time? Now get over here and purify this thing” Kagome stood up and without looking at InuYasha picked up the jewel and its remaining fragments from his hand. “I said NO; Sit Boy!” and with that Kagome shot off into the woods trying to get as far away as possible from InuYasha before the spell wore off and he would chase after her. As Kagome ran, her tears started to fall as well.

~Reality~

InuYasha awoke to the sound of Kagome's mumbling and thrashing around in her sleep, “Kagome…Kagome wake up” he tried calling and shaking her shoulder. He than noticed the tears, there were tears streaming down her face. So InuYasha stood up and carefully lifted Kagome out of bed and held her as he turned to sit on the bed with her held protectively in his arms. “Shhh…its ok Kagome I'm here and I'm not leaving…not again…Shhh,” InuYasha said as he rocked her back and forth slowly trying to comfort her. Kagome slowly started to calm down and mumbled “InuYasha” before snuggling into his embrace and falling back into a peaceful sleep.

(A/N: D_L: Yes I know that he is OOC here but hey he has had 500 years to -grow up- so:-P
Skele: Haven't you heard the saying once a moron always a moron?
D_L: Well…I was trying to give him some credit; and well, you all know how InuYasha can be
Skele: yeah like I said once a moron always a moron,
D_L: Oh Skele -_-')

~half hour later~

Kagome started to wake up a little later, the first thing she remembered was her dream; it had been just like all the rest at first but near the end, it had started to change. `I ran away like I always did but than the InuYasha that was chasing me…changed. He became his human self, and he was holding me…comforting me. I-I miss him so much' Kagome started to cry again when she heard running water in the bathroom, `Is that mama? I think I need someone to talk to' getting up from her bed, not noticing that the window is still open, walks to the door and down the stairs to the bathroom. Once she was a few feet from the bathroom, she went to call out but stopped when the door opened. “InuYasha?”

~Few minutes earlier~

After Kagome had been asleep for a little while InuYasha put her down and went to the bathroom to clean up, after using the facilities he washed his hands than proceed to was his face as well. When he was done, he just stared at his reflection trying to figure out what he was going to say, and how he was going to say it. After a minute he sighed, “I'm just going to have to tell her the truth” that said he reached for the knob and opened the door only to come face to face with Kagome herself. “InuYasha?”

They just stood there staring at each other for a few minuets before InuYasha thought it was time to say something, “Well…” but Kagome cut him off. “So it wasn't a dream?” InuYasha shook his head, “So it's you, you're really here” InuYasha stepped forward and hesitantly pulled her in to his arms, “Yeah Kagome; it's me and I'm sorry for…” she cut him off again when she grabbed him tight and buried her face into his chest, “InuYasha! InuYasha you're alive, you're ok,” Kagome was crying again but these weren't tears or sorrow but of joy. He hugged her back and ran a hand up and down her back “I'm sorry Kagome”

Kagome pulled away and looked up at him with a confused face, “Sorry for what?” he took her hand in his and gently pulled her to the stairs. “Let's go talk upstairs, Ok?” InuYasha asked “Ok”

~Upstairs~

Once upstairs and in her room, InuYasha motioned for her to sit on the bed while he closed the door. Walking over to the bed after his task was complete InuYasha pulled her desk chair over so he was sitting backwards with the back facing her. After a long silence, Kagome spoke up, but the only thing she could come with was “How?”

InuYasha smiled sadly at her and she could she an emotion in his eyes that she couldn't name, “Well, after you lef…were transported back home. I'll admit I was mad, I thought you had left me on purpose-” she was going to say something but the look in his eyes made her change her mind and he continued “- and it took a while for Miroku and Kaede to explain to me that you hadn't really belonged there in the first place. And that when the time came that the quest was completed you would be transported home” he paused for a moment and ran a hand through his long black hair; Kagome was still wondering about that. He continued after he collected his thoughts “And even then I still didn't want to believe it, I ran to the well and jumped in…oh, at least a hundred times that first day. I must have tried at least twenty times everyday after that for about two months…until it…it finally got to me that, that you were gone…” there was a long silence after that neither dared to speak. Kagome could have sworn she saw one tear fall down his face when he was finished talking.

Kagome finally started to talk, “But…but you weren't alone were you, I mean what, what about the others; Sango, Miroku, Shippo even Kaede? They didn't abandon you did they…” at that, InuYasha smiled. “No they didn't leave me…even when I tried to leave them-(Kagome gave him a look)- I tried to stay in the forest, I wanted to stay as close to the well as possible; just in case…but you know, they never gave up on me. They made sure I ate and sometimes Sango or Miroku would come and just sit with me when I was in one of my moods, or just when I needed someone there.” Kagome just smiled at him; their friends had come through for him when she couldn't. “What happened with everyone?” Kagome asked. “Well after everything was finished with me; Sango and Miroku got married and settled down in the village. Shippo, well Shippo stayed with me. We got closer after you were gone, each of us helping the other. I raised him as my own, taught him how to fight, hunt and protect himself. A few years later Miroku and Sango had their first child,” he smiled at the memory “Your going to love this; they named their daughter after you. They named her Kagome, Kagome. She was just like her namesake too, always so kind and accepting of everyone. A couple of years after that we lost Kaede to old age and laid her to rest. Than Miroku, many years later in his old age had gotten sick and was in bed for a long time. A few months later on their anniversary and after the kids had left, he had passed away later that night in his sleep…-Sob-” InuYasha looked up from his tale to see that Kagome was crying “Kagome? Are you all right? I don't have to con…” she shook her head “No finish, please. I want to know what happened to my friends.” After she gave him a smile to let him know she was alright he continued, “Sango stayed with us for a few more years after that before she joined Miroku, but not before she made me promise to watch over her children and to…to take care of you if I ever saw you again. Over the years I did odd jobs here and there, made up with my brother -Kagome looked shocked at that one- yeah I know. Shippo and I were able to get through the wars because we had one of your books.” At Kagome's puzzled look he elaborated, “Your books got left behind to so we used your history book.” InuYasha went on to tell her more stories from the past until they were interrupted by the phone ringing, Kagome reached to pick it up but InuYasha beat her to it.

“Hello Higurashi residences, InuYasha speaking” he answered with a practiced ease, Kagome was I little shocked. “Eh…Hello? Is Kagome there please?” the person on the other end of the phone answered. “May I tell her who is calling?” InuYasha replied as Kagome continued to stare at him. “Yeah it's her friend Ayumi, I was just wondering if she was ok, I mean about what happened at the club and all I feel really bad about it, is she ok?” InuYasha glanced over to Kagome and smiled, “Yeah I think she will be fine now; was there anything else you wanted to tell her?” he asked. “Yeah there is can I talk to her, please?” InuYasha said `yeah' and handed the phone over to Kagome “Hello Ayumi” said Kagome “Hi Kagome how are you? Listen I'm really sorry about the whole club thing, if I had known that…” Kagome cut her off “No, no, no it's ok Ayumi! Really, if anything me leaving the house tonight was really good for me” Kagome said as she got up, walked over to InuYasha and sat in his lap. “Really Kagome? Well I think so too” Ayumi said happily, Kagome looked a little surprised. “Why?” she asked, “Cause you won Kagome! I don't know how; you must have been really, good! They want you to come tomorrow to receive your prize,” Ayumi said happily. “What are you talking about?” Kagome asked slightly shocked and disturbed. “The prize; the one for the singing contest we all entered.” Ayumi said. Kagome dropped the phone, “Kagome? Kagome…” Ayumi shouted, “Listen I'll call you back” she said hanging up.

“What happened at the club?” InuYasha asked when Kagome had hung up. “Why are you so curious?” Kagome asked turning to face him, “Well…because…I” InuYasha stuttered. Kagome smiled and pecked him on the lips, “Thanks for worrying,” she said getting up and putting the phone away. InuYasha sighed and stood up as well. “So what happened?” InuYasha asked as Kagome stretched. “I won a singing contest, I have to go and pick up my prize tomorrow.” she told him. “Wanna come with me to get?” Kagome asked InuYasha. InuYasha smiled. “Well?” Kagome pressed, “Sure I'd love to.” InuYasha said as a small smile crossed his face.
