Kagome rolled over pressing the snooze button in the digital alarm clock by her bedside. It might have sounded funny but she loved the buzz setting. The radio was nice but it often didn't wake her up. Her other choices were awful nature sounds that just annoyed the hell out of her like chirping birds, who the hell liked to wake up to chirping birds. Rolling onto her back she sat up scratching her unruly hair squinting her eyes. She smacked her mouth a bit thinking how bitter morning breath tasted in her mouth. She slowly got out of bed leaving the covers undone and walking into the bathroom dragging her feet. She walked to the right wall of her room to the door that led to the bathroom she and her sister shared. Their parents weren't rich, but they weren't poor either. Her sister had gotten the bigger of the two rooms and most often hogged the bathroom, but Kagome had learned how to pick the lock, knowing when her sister was already fully dressed. Opening the dark, walnut colored, wooden door with a black metal handle, she stepped in turning on the light and groaning. God she hated mornings. She looked in the mirror, just staring at her reflection. The counter tops were a traditional white with silver faucets and dark walnut cabinets and drawers. There were two showers both on either side of the toilet, the textured glass serving as the curtain. You could easily tell which side was Kikyo's. It was covered with makeup, perfume, hair curlers, you name it, she had it. She also had a pink bathrobe that Kagome found hideous in the fact that it was pink. For a long time she just stared until her sister came in.
“Is school over yet?” She whined sleepily
“Kikyo, it's only been a few months. There is still about six months left. ” Kagome reminded softly.
“Heh, whatever. Anyway, my chicks are givin me a ride so you better find your own way.” Kagome had already figured that she would have a change in mind and already had Sango picking her up.
“Ok…” Kagome replied picking up her brush and starting on the task of getting ready. By the time she was finished, she had her hair up in a bun with two chopsticks holding it, white tennis shoes, Large white socks that went up her calves, and her school uniform composing of a maroon skirt, white button-up blouse with a maroon stripe around the sleeve and the school emblem on the left side of the chest, and finished off with a maroon tie and black pin stripes. She was very thankful that the skirt went down to almost her knees. True enough it was autumn, but it was still nice a pleasantly warm outside. She could hear her sister singing to one of her favorite songs in the bathroom, a little off key.
Her cell phone started vibrating on the desk and she walked over flipping it open. “Hello, Kagome Higurashi…”
“Kagome, you answer the phone so properly, I'm not the queen of England ya know?”
“I'm sorry Sango, I didn't mean to…”
“It's alright. Anyway I'm like a few blocks from your house so I'll see you outside in a few.”
“Ok! Bye Sango.” Kagome flipped the phone off and packed up her stuff in her brown book bag stuffed with books and papers, some due today. She could hardly believe she was a Junior. It was unreal. Not to mention, with that title came cuter boys like Inuyasha Takahashi. She sighed as she thought about him, blushing ever so slightly. He was so cute, everyone knew him too. She had no doubt her hadn't even noticed her. She looked around to check she had everything and shoved her phone into her bag before heading downstairs. She could hear her mom cooking and talking to her father, Naraku. She walked over to her mother giving her a good morning and kissing her father on his cheek, giving him the greeting as well.
“Morning Kagome, do you have all of your stuff?” Her mother asked not even turning around.
“Yes I do.” She replied as her sister came down stairs.
“Hello all!” Her mother turned around now smiling happily.
“Hello dear, my you look so beautiful the way you fix up your uniform.” Kikyo wore the same one as Kagome, only she had bracelets galore, necklaces all over her neck, the top three buttons undone, white leg warmers over black biker boots, and her hair was done curled out at the tips where she had died it hot pink. Her lips where like plastic with all that lip gloss on, and she had a dark array of Maroon and black eye shadow, where Kagome settled for just some mascara.
“Thanks. I've got to go see ya!” She said walking out smacking her bubblegum loudly.
“I've got to go too bye mom, bye dad.” Her mom simply nodded.
“Give me a kiss before you go.” Her father reminded and she gladly complied giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. She walked out to find Sango ready and waiting. She smiled walking over and getting into the small car.
“God you took like forever, AND you're wearing your glasses?” Kagome lifted a hand to the brownish-red rimmed contraptions.
“What's wrong with them?” She asked innocently.
“… They're glasses… Oh well, lets hit the road, we have to stop by Miroku's.” She said speeding out of their driveway and out onto the street.
“Are we giving him a ride?” she asked happily. Sango looked at her like she was an idiot.
“No, I thought we'd show him the car before we got to school…” She replied sarcastically making Kagome sigh. Sango laughed. “I'm teasing you Kagome.” They pulled up and Kagome hopped into the back letting Miroku take the front.
“Hello my dear.” He said kissing Sango on the cheek as he got in.
“Close the door, lets go.” Sango replied making Miroku pout and Kagome giggle a little. He closed the door anyway and she sped off toward the school.
“Good morning Kagome.” He said turning around and smiling at her.
“Morning Miroku, ready for school?”
“Not really no…” Miroku and Inuyasha were best friends, and Kagome had slipped to Miroku about liking him before she knew, but he had been kind and didn't tell Yash. He honestly didn't want to introduce them because he knew Yash only too well. Sango pulled into a spot outside the school hurriedly. They all got out of the car walking toward the school. Sango and Miroku had their arms around each other as they walked up, with Kagome behind. She felt a little lonely, because she was always behind in the back but…
“Hey, get up here Kagome.” Sango always made sure she was next to her. The girls got their books inside their lockers and went to homeroom together, History. They took their two seats in the middle of the back. People filled up the rest of the seats except for three in the front and the one next to her. The teacher was pretty young, it was Inuyasha's older brother. He was busy writing stuff on the board that Kikyo and her two friends thought they could sneak in after the bell without getting in trouble, and with them, Inuyasha. She hated this class. He sat next to her.
“Hey.” He whispered and Kagome looked up. “Can I borrow some paper?” Inuyasha asked. She nodded, handing him a few pieces of paper.
“Do you need a pencil too?” She whispered back holding up one of her mechanical pencil.
“Yeah thanks.” She nodded and handed him the pencil. The teacher turned around capping his marker.
“Ms. Higurashi, Ms. Hino, and Ms. Yoshizumi, you will all stay 30 minutes after school for being tardy.”
“Huh?” Her sister asked laughing.
“Pay attention Ms. Higurashi, you have detention today after school.”
“I don't think so.” He looked at her incrediously.
“Why is that Ms. Higurashi?” He leaned back against his desk looking at her.
“Because everyone knows I'm the lead cheerleader here and practice is today after school.”
“Oh! Forgive me, my mistake Ms. Lead cheerleader.” He said sarcastically.
“It's ok, I think I can let it slide this time teach.” Kikyo winked.
“I'm so relieved! One hour after school, If you choose to ditch you will be taken off the squad perminatly.” Kikyo made a small sound of protest. “I'm sorry, did you want to stay longer?” She wisely remained silent. “That's what I thought. Same goes for you little brother, you will not be tardy to my class.” Inuyasha sighed but nodded never the less. “Very well, lets begin.” Class was the same as usual, notes on the feudal era, and other stuff. Kagome always tried to block off the fact that Yash sat next to her. It was pretty easy since he acted like she didn't exist. She knew he would never give back the pencil. In fact he would probably ask for another in math 6th period. The bell rang and everyone shuffled out talking about the upcoming quiz that Friday and their plans for the winter dance. Kagome's Plans: Nothing. Sango had asked her again to go with her and Kagome considered it. Kagome walked with Sango to their next period class not really listening, just staring at the ground as she walked. She felt a familiar bump into her shoulder causing her to fall forward.
“Oh sorry…” The guy apologized but kept walking.
“You okay?” Sango asked offering her a hand.
“Yeah…” Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “Thanks.” They finally made it to drama and Sango opened the door for her. She sat down at a place with Sango after putting her bag in the back as they continued to work on their play of Modern Cinderella.
They hadn't assigned lead roles yet, but auditions were next week and people practiced during class. They had been working on props so far and most of them were finished now. The bell rang again as the last of the people shuffled into their spots.
“Ok people, next week auditions are going to be held for the casting of Modern Cinderella. So get with your buddies and practice, you have today, tomorrow, and Friday, and of course the weekend before we start next week. Ok go.” Sango and Kagome took their normal spots in the corner of the bleachers, taking their scripts with them.
“So what are you doing this weekend?” Sango asked holding her script up like she was reading off it.
“I thought I might start a new book.” Kagome replied honestly.
“How about you and I go shopping for our dresses this weekend? The Halloween dance is a little over a week away. Besides, you can't be the same thing two years in a row.” Kagome sighed, she hated shopping. “I'm not rehearsing with you until you say yes.”
“Fine.” Kagome agreed, instantly regretting it.
~*~*~
“So how was your day so far?” Sango asked sticking some vanilla ice cream into her mouth.
“It was ok. Inuyasha and I have almost all the same classes, but he doesn't talk to me.” Kagome sighed.
“I meant your morning classes, but whatever suits you.” Sango giggled, spoon-feeding some ice cream to Miroku.
“No offense, but Yash….you're not really the type of girl he looks for.” Miroku couldn't have been more direct.
“Because I'm a geek?”
“No… Because you're too smart to fall for his lines and you're not easy.” Kagome looked away.
“Why does he like `easy' girls?” Man she was naïve.
“Because he's an idiot.” Kagome looked at him where he sat at another table with a bunch of guys. He held his maroon jacket on his finger over his shoulder, and had his leg on the table. The boy's uniforms were identical to the girls except for the jackets, and they had pants instead of skirts. “Kagome, forget about him. You don't need to be barking up that tree.” He was a playboy, plain and simple.
“I can't help it. I've known him for two years now and we say hi but every
time its like he sees me for the first time. He doesn't even know my name.” She leaned her head down on the table. Sango put her hand on her back.
“He's an asshole Kagome.”
“I know… Don't worry guys, I'll get over it. Besides, Miro is right. No guy would ever even take a second glance at me.” She walked away leaving Sango to punch the poor boy in the arm.
“What was that for?” He asked.
“For making her feel bad.” She stomped off leaving him bewildered behind.
“But I didn't say anything close to that.” He whined to Miro.
“Hey Roku!” Inuyasha called walking over to him.
“Hey. What's up?” They both slapped hands and fist bumped.
“Not much. You?” He asked keeping his jacket on his shoulder.
“Not much. Haven't seen you `round for like ever.” He joked, they had a lot of classes together, including the one just before lunch.
“I know. Well what's with you hanging with the chicks?”
“Well you know Sango, my girlfriend.”
“'Course.”
“Yeah that was Kagome.” Inuyasha still looked like he didn't know. “…Sango's friend…” Still no click. “…Kikyo Higurashi's little sister.” He sighed.
“That's Kikyo's little sister?!?” Miroku nodded. “Wow. They are nothing alike are they? Hey, is she taken?” Miroku looked at him alarmed.
“Kagome?!?” Inuyasha chuckled and shook his head.
“Dude, you know she ain't my type.”
“Kikyo? Not as far as I know but-“
“Great thanks! Wish me luck!” Miroku sighed as he watched his best friend run off to court Kagome's sister. He sighed heavily and looked up to the sky.
“Why me?” He whined and went on to class.
~*~*~
Kagome got home opening the door to the medium sized, white house. “I'm home!” She called out into the room.
“Good…” Her mother started walking past her with her purse. “…I'm going shopping, make sure dinner is done when I get home. You father is coming home late tonight.” Kagome nodded and set her stuff down as her mom left without even so much as a goodbye. Kagome didn't mind however, she was used to this. Her mother, Abi, never liked her ever since she had started picking up books instead of clothes. Her father was at least semi-nice to her, although at times it freaked her out but whatever. She sighed as she reached into the closet and pulled out her old apron and started her work. About half way through cooking the stir-fry her sister finally came come sighing loudly.
“Mom I'm home!”
“Out shopping.” Kagome called back putting in the veggies.
“How long will she be?” Kikyo asked popping in.
“She should be home soon. Dad isn't coming home till late.” Kagome replied stirring the mix in the hot, sizzling pan. Kagome did notice the goofy grin on her sister's face as she picked up the pan and flipping the mix in the air a little. “What are you so happy about?” She asked kindly.
“Oh this cute guy at school asked me out this weekend.” She smiled leaning against the fridge.
“Really? That was fast.” Kagome commented putting the pan over the stove again.
“Yeah well you know how it is when…oh wait you don't never mind.” Kikyo snickered, but Kagome ignored her.
“Well what's his name?” Kagome asked picking up the pot again.
“Inuyasha Takahashi.” She responded dreamily. Kagome gasped dropping the pan onto the stove and accidentally getting hot oil on her sister who howled in protest. Kagome immediately turned off the stove and turned on the cold water taking her hand and bringing her arm under it.
“I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry,” She chanted over in over as her sister whined looking at her hand. “Let me get you some ice.” She said going over to the fridge and her sister shut off the faucet. Kagome had a small ice pack in her hand and didn't even notice her sister's hand go up. When she looked up her sister brought it across her cheek so hard it made Kagome stumble a bit to the side and grab the doorframe. As if called her mother then walked into the kitchen to see Kikyo holding her arm and Kagome against the frame clutching her cheek and an ice pack.
“What on Earth happened?” Her mother shouted angrily.
“She burned my arm with hot oil!” Kikyo cried pointing her finger.
“It was an accident!” Kagome replied in defense.
“My poor baby, come on lets get you cleaned up.” Her mother cooed and walked with her out of the room leaving Kagome to finish up dinner. It would be a very long year.
