Chapter 2
Money and Softball

Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha…sorry to disappoint you. Or Salt for that matter…

Summary: She was a shy, soft-spoken, girl unseen to the world. He was an outgoing, loud-mouthed boy everyone knew and loved. He was in all her classes, sat next to her, and fell in love…with her sister.

“Hurry up I can't be late today!” Kikyo cried into Kagome's room. SHE couldn't be late? She was ALWAYS late and she never gave a damn. Nonetheless, she took her pack and walked downstairs to the smell of her mother making fresh bacon for her father.

“Leaving already?” Her mother asked wiping her hands on a towel.

“Yeah, I want to be there a little early today.” Kikyo said, smacking her gum loudly as she talked. “Lets go Kagome. Bye mom, bye dad!” Kagome grabbed a piece of toast off the table and kissing her father's cheek before she left saying goodbye. Her sister drove a very nice 2002 Lexus, black in color. It had a very smooth ride and it didn't complain when Kikyo constantly broke the speed limits, maybe even the law of gravity at times. It was really simple; her sister was a scary driver.

“So, what did you decide about that guy?” Kagome asked trying to keep her mind off the driving.

“Inuyasha? Oh well we just agreed to go out sometime. He's really hot but he's far too sweet. But it comes in handy. If he is the same as he was when he dated Yuka Yoshimoto, then I'm looking at lots of jewels.” Kikyo seemed so cheerful, so why did Kagome's stomach turn.

“So are you saying that you're dating him for his money?”

“And the sex, I heard he's built to please.” Kikyo smiled, licking her lips and smirking suggestively. “You know Kagome if you just like dropped the books and like hit the clothes the guys would like you better.” She had Kagome there.

“I know, I just… I can't get into those types of things.” Her sister pulled in and put the car in and put it in park almost angrily.

“Well you better start because I am not going to have a little sister like you to embarrass me any further then you already have. Your social status might be lower then low but mine is high, right where I like it. So you either start becoming like me or I will talk mom into sending you to a different school across the city.” Kagome knew she could. Mom was always on her side. Kagome remained silent, nodding her head and lowering her eyes. Kikyo smiled, happy she had won, and got out of the car. Kagome also did shutting the door on the small black Lexus. As they walked, some of Kikyo's friends came, walking beside her. Kagome was instantly shut out; they hadn't even looked at her. It was like she was invisible. She sighed and walked down the small, concrete path to a tree that sat on the grass that surrounded the school. It was right next to the east entrance, and her classroom was right inside. She sat down at the base of the tree and pulled out her newest book. She opened it to where her leather bookmark was and began. When she read, she could visualize it all in her head from character's points of views. She had just started it when a shadow cast over her. She looked up a little and saw black army boots peaking out from under a pair of worn pants.

“No Miroku, I don't know where Sango is, she didn't give me a ride today.” She sighed going back to her book.

“Well when I see him, I'll let him know.” Her eyes shot up to meet those gorgeous amber ones.

“Oh, Inuyasha… sorry I thought you were-“

“Miroku, yeah I know.” He shifter his weight from one foot to the other, hands in his pockets. “Actually I was looking for you. You're Kagome right?” Kagome's heart doubled its beat as she removed her glasses, trebling. She could see with or without them, she mainly used them for reading.

“I am?” She whispered. “I mean, yeah, that's me.” She corrected herself. She couldn't help but stare at the beautiful purple streaks that ran down his cheeks and his wonderfully pointed human ears.

“Well I was wondering if you knew where your sister sits at lunch.” She tried not to look disappointed.

“Uhh yeah, you know where the cherry trees are on the patio? She sits at the tables under there.” He smiled showing his sharp fangs.

“Great thanks.” He nodded and walked away. `Well at least he managed a thank you.' Kagome thought a little angrily. Off in the distance she could see him finally find her and sighed heavily putting on her glasses. This didn't last long though, for someone tripped over her legs that she had extended out on the grass.

“Oh I'm sorry, I didn't see you.” He apologized while his friend laughed, calling him and idiot. Kagome just sighed and nodded her acceptance. `No one ever does' she thought to herself.

“So then I was like no way and she was like way way and I just like couldn't believe it.” Kikyo giggled on the other side of the ugly, pale blue lockers, barely big enough to fit their clothes and valuables.

“So are you going out with Bankotsu Yura?” Kagura asked popping the buttons to her blouse.

“I don't know. He hasn't asked me out directly yet, but all my sources say he will.” She replied shoving her skirt with her top into the locker. “Plus, who can resist this body?” added, seductively running a hand up her red, mesh clad body.

“Save it for the guys Yura, you're gonna need it.” Kagura laughed throwing Yura's gym shirt at her. Kikyo laughed with them, holding the white shirt up to her chest, hiding her pink, satin bra momentarily.

“Well, I heard SOMEONE struck gold.” Yura teased, glancing knowingly at Kikyo. Kagura turned to Kikyo with her mouth open.

“Who's the lucky, rich, bastard you caught in your web this time?” Kikyo smiled as she tugged on her shirt.

“Inuyasha Takahashi.” She replied coyly.

“INUYASHA! Are you serious?!?!” Kagura gasped.

“Yep.” She replied stepping into her maroon shorts, which she folded over at the top so they fit right on her hips, and went down and inch below her bottom.

“Wow, that's going to be great! He's loaded!” Yura exclaimed closing her locker, now fully dressed, the same as Kikyo, only the sleeves were bunched at the top.

“Yeah. He's taking me out to Salt tonight, that new restaurant downtown.” Kikyo replied tying her shirt up to show her tight stomach.

“The one that's like… really expensive sit down?”

“Yep, that's right. At first he tried to take me to a movie! Ugh! Like I really want to go sit in a filthy theatre with gum sticking to my brand new Anne Kline heels.” Kikyo scoffed.

“Yeah, no kidding, I never got that one piece of my coach bag.” Yura whined.

“Well whatever, come on let's go before Coach gets angry.”

“Let's go! Team two, out in the field!” The coach called loudly. Turning he spotted the chattering girls, now coming down the dirt path to the baseball field. “Girls! You're late! Kikyo, out on the field, Yura, you're up batting with Kagura!” With a groan the girls split up, Kikyo, grabbing a glove and walking out into the grass. Kagome walked up with the metal bat in her hand, to the dust covered plate, ignoring the laughter and groans from the boys that were split among the teams. It was their first day out for softball, and Kagome was so excited. She loved to play any sport, but mostly flag football. Powder Puff Foot-ball tryouts were going to start soon and she could not wait. Some of the boys in her classes were seniors, mostly because they had taken something else before, and needed the credit. Inuyasha was one of them. He hadn't taken P.E. his first year, so he and a few of his buddies, who had taken theatre, now were stuck in this class. Inuyasha got most of her classes, because he had gotten into the higher levels early, and couldn't go any higher so they placed him in the ones he skipped. And some he failed… but that was for other reasons. She focused herself back into the game as she took her stance, pursing her lips at the insulting laughter of the male pitcher. Bases were loaded, two outs. She pushed that aside and just waited for the ball to come. It did. It came fast too. She swung…. And missed.

“STRIKE 1!” The coach yelled. Kagome took her stance again. The ball came toward her again, and she missed. “STRIKE 2!” The groans from her teammates grew louder, and so did the opposing laughter. She could see her sister even laughing at her with another prep from her group in the field. She gripped the bat tighter as they all moved in. The pitcher grinned as he swung his arm back, and threw the ball at her once more. Time seemed to slow down; her heart beat rhythmically in her chest as she watched the ball come closer. She lifted her right foot a little, took a small step back to get a better stance, and swung as hard as she could. For a moment she thought it might be another strike, but no. The ball flew in the air all the way to the end of the field; Kagome watched it for a few seconds before taking off as fast as she could. She was already on second when they got the ball and was now almost to third. One of the men threw the ball at the third baseman, and Kagome ran as fast as she could. Behind her she could hear the man catch it and picked up her pace. Near the base, she slipped. Turning it into a slide, her foot reached the base, a mere second before the guy had caught it. “SAFE!” The coach yelled, making the arm movements.

“Nice job, but ya gotta be careful with the shorts.” She looked up at Inuyasha, who had been catcher for the opposing team. He held his hand out and she gladly took it. She looked at her stinging right arm and both legs. She had wonderful raspberries on both right limbs. The left leg wasn't as bad thankfully.

“Yeah, thanks.” She winced.

“No problem.” The coach came over looking at her arm.

“You should go to the nurse so it won't get infected or scar too bad.” He instructed. “Think you can take her there Yash?” The coach had known him for several years. Inuyasha was a star football player way back; no one knew why he quit. Now he did several TA jobs for the team.

“Sure.” Inuyasha threw his glove off to the side and escorting her out. “Can you walk ok?”

“Yeah, just a little painful.” Kagome laughed as she walked next to him.

“I'd Imagine, you probably twisted your ankle on the fall. You covered your clumsiness pretty well though.”

“You noticed!” Kagome cried in alarm as he laughed.

“Only because I have a trained eye. It wouldn't be so noticeable to the other students though.” Kagome sighed in relief.

“Yeah, I'm afraid I am a little klutzy in a lot of ways.” She laughed nervously.

“Well don't worry to much about it.” A long pause followed as the two walked through the empty school halls. “You don't seem anything like your sister.” He finally commented.

“Yeah.” Kagome lowered her head. “My sister is very smart, but she doesn't use it. She'd rather go shopping and use her brain to figure out what colors would match, then studying to do well on a test. But she's still nice.” `Way to go Kagome, just TELL him how perfect she is.'

“Yeah. I'm taking her out to Salt tonight.” Kagome gaped at him.

“That place is so expensive!”

“Yeah, my parent's weren't too happy, but they were nice about it and put some money on my card.”

“They sound nice. I bet you'll have fun.”

“I hope so.” He opened the door to the office, letting her go in first. They went to the nurse, stopping outside the door. “Well, I'm gonna head back, if you need me to get your stuff or something, the office can call coach `Kay?”

“'Kay.” Kagome nodded.

“See ya `round.” He turned on his heel and got about five steps.

“Hey! When you come tonight, bring a rose if you can afford it. Red.” Kagome called after him. “Those are her favorite.”

“Thanks!”

“No problem.” She sighed after the door closed. All she could think now was Kami she was stupid.
