“Inuyasha?”
“Yeah I feel it too, Miroku. Wake the others.”
It was still a few hours until dawn, but as Inuyasha gently shook Kagome and Shippo who were both curled against him asleep, Miroku stood and walked to where Sango and Karma had passed out for the night. Miroku nudged them with the end of his staff.
“What is it?” Sango asked instantly alert and rising to her feet.
Karma rolled away from the annoying prodding, not actually conscious until she landed on her back with her dagger’s hilt pressing painfully into her shoulder.
“Ouch, why didn’t I take these damn things off?” Karma muttered as she sat up to do just that.
“Don’t, Karma, we’re going to have company shortly.” Miroku informed her.
“Wha? Company? Who would be enough of a jerk to visit this early?” Karma questioned as she yawned.
“Don’t be stupid, bitch.” Inuyasha snapped, concerned that she wouldn’t be alert during the battle that he was certain was about to begin.
Karma jumped to her feet as the others were, ready to give Inuyasha a taste of her temper, when something streaked through the trees and exploded on the ground. It sent the embers of the dying fire flying everywhere. Still exhausted, Karma couldn’t raise a barrier to protect her family. Sango instantly realized Karma’s dilemma and raised her boomerang to shield her own face as well as Miroku’s and Karma’s. At the same time, Inuyasha used his own body, covered with the fire-rat cloth, to protect Kagome and Shippo.
“It is time I take the shard back, Inuyasha.” Byakuya said evilly as he landed on the ground, across from the group.
Inuyasha spun around to face the demon. At the same time, Sango pulled her boomerang into position to throw if needed and Miroku whipped out four spells from his sleeve and tossed them at Byakuya. They stopped in mid-air in front of the demon and folded into pointed spikes that glowed eerily. There was a loud tearing sound as the papers multiplied.
“Did you actually expect these little spells to work on me?” Byakuya asked sarcastically, “I’ll return them to you, Monk.”
With a wave of his hand, the paper spears shot at the group, forcing them all to dive sideways. When the spears hit the ground, they exploded and sent dirt flying everywhere.
“Miroku, leave this small fry to me.” Inuyasha ordered as he stood and drew Tetsusaiga from its sheath.
Miroku simply nodded as he got up and helped Sango to her feet from the spot he had knocked her. As Karma got to her knees she saw a small girl run by, followed by a white-furred demon. Rin? I have to help her. Karma thought, her mind clouded by the need for sleep. Kagome had also seen the child but before she could call out a warning that the girl was Kanna, Naraku’s offspring, Karma raced into the forest after the little girl. Kagome grabbed her bow and arrows before she followed with Shippo clinging to her shoulder.
“Go with them.” Miroku needlessly told Sango as she was already doing so.
“I’m sick of you, Byakuya. Prepare to die!” Inuyasha growled.
“How do you expect to defeat an opponent you can’t see, Inuyasha?” Byakuya asked as a thick fog began to stretch out through the entire forest.
“I don’t need to see you to kill you, fucker.” Inuyasha shouted into the dense fog as Miroku came forward to stand back to back with him.
“The women went that way,” Miroku said as he stretched out his staff so Inuyasha could see it from the corner of his eye before warning, “Don’t use the wind scar if he goes over there.”
“Got it.” Inuyasha responded then he ordered, “Don’t move an inch from this spot.”
Inuyasha jumped into the trees before Miroku could argue over separating in the fog.
“Dumbass.” Inuyasha growled as he landed on a large branch and swung Tetsusaiga at Byakuya.
“I’m just getting warmed up.” Naraku’s spawn replied as he blocked the blow with his own sword.
While the pair leaped from tree to tree battling, Karma came to an abrupt halt in a sparsely wooded area of the forest. Not ten yards in front of her stood the girl she had thought to be Rin, right next to the white-furred demon that resembled a baboon. It can’t be! Karma thought as the surrounding forest faded into a black void.

At the same moment in present day America, Captain Jack Sheller was downing his fourth shot of whiskey after reading Karma’s letter. He had just decided to ignore her warning and use his contacts to locate the mysterious person who could travel between times, when a knock sounded on his front door. He went to the door unsteadily and opened it, still clutching the letter in his fist.
“Whatcha doing, Captain? People shouldn’t drink alone. It’s unsociable and people will start calling you a drunk.” The young woman on the other side said as soon as she caught a whiff of his breath.
“Respect your elders, Corina. I don’t have time for your mouth right now and shouldn’t you be in Louisiana studying or something?” He snapped.
“I’m here on official business, Captain. The higher-ups sent me to have a chat with you.” Corina said as she flipped her pale blond hair over her shoulder.
The captain opened the door wider to let her enter then closed it firmly before snapping the locks into place. He motioned for her to have a seat and took the chair across from her after she sat down.
“Why would the bosses contact you instead of me directly as your superior?” He asked as soon as he was comfortable.
“Don’t play dumb, sir.” Corina said bluntly, “You’ve suspected I outrank you from our first meeting.”
The Captain nodded and asked, “Are you going to tell me what the hell is going on or just sit there twiddling your thumbs all night?”
“I’m going to tell you what I know, just chill out a sec, would you.” The young woman replied. “We know you can keep quiet when needed or the higher-ups wouldn’t have let you near Karma when she was young let alone place her with your family. This is definitely one of the most important times you need to keep your mouth shut from what I understand.”
“Go on.” He nodded when she paused to stress that point.
“I’m sure you’ve noticed we get a lot more missions lately. That’s only a small part of the bigger problem, there are a shit load of upper level demons that want to return to the old ways. The bosses have already had to take down a few of them and they think they’ll have to fight many more before this dies down. Apparently Karma got herself involved in something major in the past and it could fuck with our reality majorly. I was told you received a letter from her that tells you there is a chick that can travel back and forth between times. Is that right?”
“Yes, I got the letter today. It didn’t mention the person was female, though.” He answered.
Corina shrugged, “I’m just telling you what I know, as ordered. Anyway, if this chick is found before they do whatever they have to, our world will dissolve and no one knows what it will be like then. Under no circumstance are you to attempt to find her, if your contacts mention to theirs that you are looking for someone the wrong people will hear it and the demon rebels will start looking too.”
“You knew Karma would be sent to Feudal Japan, didn’t you? That’s why you had her helping you study the ancient form of Japanese speech instead of the modern style.”
“No, I didn’t know at the time. I was ordered to do it, so I did. Karma didn’t even realize it wasn’t modern because I claimed it was for a class. I just found out where she is a few hours ago. I need your word that you’ll keep quiet about it and I have to take the letter so I can give it to the bosses for safe keeping.”
He nodded his agreement to remain silent and reluctantly held out the letter but before he released it, the Captain asked, “How did you earn this much trust from the brass when you’re so young?”
Corina jerked the letter from his hand and laughed as she stood informing him, “I’m much older than you think, sir. I have to get this to the bosses immediately, but I’ll be in touch. I’m going to be reassigned most likely, now that Karma is out of the picture.”
The Captain rose and walked her to the door. As he opened it for her, he said, “Don’t be a stranger if you do get reassigned. I’m attached to hearing your smartass mouth every now and then.”
Corina laughed and promised to stay in touch no matter what as she gave him a friendly hug and walked to her car. He watched her tail lights disappear then closed the door mumbling to himself, “I’m getting to old to deal with this kind of shit.”

< br> Within the void Karma could only see the little girl holding a mirror and the demon, which now appeared to be human, standing beside her. A green light suddenly shot from the mirror and engulfed Karma. The demon stuck one hand into the center of the beam, which was connecting Karma and the mirror. After a moment, the demon smiled evilly while the light and the girl vanished from the void. Even though she felt strange after the light disappeared, Karma pulled the poison dagger from her hip and a smaller throwing knife from her thigh.
“You’re Naraku. Aren’t you?” Karma questioned the demon.
“I am indeed Naraku,” he answered with a small tip of his head, “but you seem to have other problems at the moment.”
“KARMA!”
The woman turned in a panic at the sound of her mother’s voice shouting for her. In the darkness, Karma watched as her mother’s deceptively angelic form appeared from the far reaches of the void. She was followed by the man who raped Karma and a demon that could have stepped right out of the paintings of hell Karma was forced to hang in her room when she was young as a reminder of where she was destined to go.
“NO! YOU’RE DEAD! I KILLED YOU!” Karma screamed in terror.
Kagome, Sango, and Shippo stared in shock as they stood in the fog frozen by Karma’s words and tone.
“Karma, it’s one of Naraku’s tricks. Fight it!” Sango called as she saw Kanna holding her mirror with a demon puppet against it, pointed straight at Karma.
“Karma, I have come for revenge. Fight me.” Karma heard the hated man say within the void.
“I killed you once, bastard. I’ll do it again!” Karma shouted as she threw her knife at his black heart.
To her dismay, Karma was shaking so bad that the knife missed the heart and plunged into the bastard’s shoulder instead. As Karma watched the demon from her worst nightmares pulled the man down to the ground and removed the knife before using it’s hands to stop the flow of blood.
“The necklace keeps your mother alive, Karma.” Naraku told her, “Remove it and kill her as you wanted to so long ago.”
“Karma, don’t listen! It’s a trick!” Kagome yelled frightened by the words spoken by a bodiless voice, but Karma heard the words in her mother’s frightened tones and took them to mean Naraku was speaking the truth.
Karma charged her mother and ripped off the large cross the woman always wore. Karma flung it behind her as she punched her mother in the jaw and knocked her to the ground. She straddled the evil bitch and raised the poison dagger above her mother’s heart. Karma plunged it downward as she suddenly felt Kagome’s soul crying out to her own. It shattered the spell Karma had been under, but not in time to stop the plunging dagger. Karma just managed to angle the blade into her own thigh, which was pinning Kagome’s arm to the ground. Karma rolled off Kagome as she pulled the blade out of her leg and tossed it aside.
“Fuck.” Karma grunted in pain.
Kanna vanished with the jar on a broken string that Kagome had kept the jewel shard in and she left behind the demon puppet that was already beginning to transform. Before it could achieve its goal, Sesshoumaru appeared and ripped it apart with his claws. The fog began to vanish as he walked to where Kagome had just pulled a vial from Karma’s belt.
“Is this the right one?” Kagome asked Karma urgently.
Karma looked at it and nodded once as she grimaced in pain. Kagome opened the vial and poured it down the woman’s open mouth. Sesshoumaru took in Karma’s cut leg, which was already beginning to smell of burnt flesh, and then he spared a glance at Kagome’s bruising jaw and Sango’s shoulder that Shippo had just finished wrapping his vest around as a makeshift bandage.
“You’re late.” Karma said weakly as Sesshoumaru knelt down to cradle her head in his lap.
“No, I am early, woman. Dawn has not yet broke and will not do so for a few more minutes.” Sesshoumaru told her gently.
“SHIT!” Karma yelled as fire ripped through her body.
“This is going to be bad, Sesshoumaru.” Kagome warned without taking her eyes from Karma.
The instant Kanna had the shard Byakuya created one of his paper birds to escape from the battle in the trees with Inuyasha. As he flew off the demon yelled tauntingly, “If I were you, I’d check on my female companions. It seems your new follower attacked them for Naraku.”
Inuyasha jumped to the ground, briefly noticing Jaken and Rin were in the camp with Sesshoumaru’s lizard.
“Hurry.” Inuyasha told Miroku as he ran in the direction the monk had pointed out as the way the girls went.
Miroku picked up Karma’s bag and once he caught up to her, he picked up Rin, who started off after Inuyasha herself. Jaken stayed behind not willing to disobey Sesshoumaru’s orders to wait at the camp.
“What is Lord Sesshoumaru thinking to force us to travel with that scum and his worthless pack?” He questioned the silent lizard and continued to rant and whine as he sat down to wait as told.
Inuyasha arrived at the spot where Karma lay surrounded by the others, who were staring at her anxiously. He knelt next to Kagome by Karma’s legs. Miroku came from behind a moment later and set Rin down. The little girl ran to her master and stood by his back as she looked worriedly at Karma whose head was resting on Sesshoumaru‘s lap. Miroku immediately saw Shippo’s torn vest around Sango’s sleeve and dropped to her side. He and Shippo began to bandage the shoulder properly as soon as Sango consented to pull her arm free of her clothes. Sesshoumaru glared at Inuyasha.
“This is the protection you offer.” Sesshoumaru snapped, “I am surprised your pack has lived so long.”
“Not…brother…fault” Karma gasped just before a wave of intense pain caused her to scream.
Powerful seizures over took Karma’s control of her body. Sesshoumaru pulled her upper body into a tight grasp to prevent her flaying arms from causing more damage to her and Inuyasha pinned her legs when they came dangerously close to kicking him in a sensitive spot. The sun had fully risen before the pain and thrashing subsided. Karma passed out as her loved ones let out a sigh of relief for the fact that she lived through the traumatic experience. Inuyasha released his hold of her legs and sat back to stare at his brother who was wiping sweat from Karma’s brow. When Sesshoumaru looked up, Inuyasha and the others could clearly see the concern on his face.
“What has happened to Karma? Will it cause more pain to move her now?” The demon inquired of his half-brother.
Inuyasha turned his own worried gaze to Kagome for the answers.
“I think we should put that balm on her cut, you know the stuff she used on Shippo, Inuyasha.” Kagome said after a minute. “We need to bandage it as well, before we take her back to the camp.”
Inuyasha nodded and after only a slight hesitation, he used his claws to carefully cut off the leg of her pants at the rip. Rin chose that moment to speak.
“Lady Karma is gonna be VERY angry with you, Inuyasha, when she wakes-up. You shouldn’t cut people’s clothes.” the little girl informed him gravely.
“We shall provide Lady Karma with proper attire to replace the men’s clothing Inuyasha has ruined, Rin. She should be dressed fitting to her station as my intended mate.” Sesshoumaru informed the child.
Rin looked pleased with the idea but Kagome laughed.
“I think Karma will be angry with you Sesshoumaru, once I tell her what you just said.” Kagome teased while she searched Karma’s belt compartments for the tin Karma had used on Shippo. To herself Kagome muttered, “She’s carrying a whole pharmacy in here. I wish these bottles were labeled so I knew what they are.”
Kagome finally found the tin and liberally applied the balm to Karma’s wound. With Inuyasha elevating Karma’s leg, Kagome wrapped the cut tightly. Sesshoumaru picked Karma up, holding her so that her now bare leg was pressed against him. Inuyasha and Kagome lead the way back to the camp as they cleared the path of stray branches that might scrape against their injured friends. Miroku ended the line, carrying Sango’s boomerang for her. The monk had to keep reminding the children in front of him and Sango that they were capable of talking and walking at the same time. Sango laughed at him then clutched her shoulder as the motion from the laughter sent a small sting of pain through it.
“Are you alright?” Miroku asked in concern.
“Yeah, it’s better than being dead anyway.” Sango replied making all the blood drain from the monk’s face. “I really wish I knew what Karma was seeing she kept yelling that we were dead.”
“I’m more concerned about the fact she could have killed you, Sango.” Miroku said seriously.
“She could have killed Kagome as well but she didn’t, so don’t worry about that, monk.” Sango said firmly with a small tightening of her heart.
When they arrived at the campsite, the group saw that Kirara had returned from where ever she had gone and was hissing dangerously at Jaken and the two-headed lizard. Sango rushed to her and began to pet the demon’s head comfortingly.
“It’s alright, Kirara. They mean us no harm.” Sango whispered soothingly.
Kirara glanced at the demon she knew led the invaders and saw he was trusted enough to be permitted to hold Karma. The feline demon gave one last hiss of warning before she transformed and jumped onto Sango’s uninjured shoulder. After the confrontation had been diverted, Kagome began to gather blankets and shake them free of debris. She made a pallet out of them and gestured for Sesshoumaru to lay Karma upon it. He did so and then stood.
“What happened?” Sesshoumaru asked in unison with Inuyasha.
Neither brother looked amused as Kagome laughingly pointed out their developing habit of saying the same thing in total sync before she explained all that she knew of the incident was that Naraku had somehow made Karma think they were enemies returned from the grave.
“Karma snapped out of the trance just before she stabbed me and turned her poison blade into her own leg.” Kagome said finishing the tale.
“Thank the powers that be.” Inuyasha said as he pulled Kagome into a tight embrace and kissed her soundly in front of everyone.
“Foolish bitch.” Sesshoumaru stated as he looked down with a frown at Karma.
Inuyasha ended his kiss and was about to go off on his brother, but stopped open mouthed as he saw the expression on Sesshoumaru’s face. Inuyasha knew if the situation had been reversed, he would have said the same thing about Kagome so instead of reaming Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha told everyone in general that they would return to the village to allow Sango and Karma time to heal. Inuyasha ordered Miroku to fly on Kirara in order to support Karma on the demon’s back.
“No.” Sesshoumaru protested flatly, “Karma would go into a panic if she awoke in midair. I shall carry her to your village, Inuyasha, or she shall not go at all.”
Inuyasha took a few deep breaths to control his anger over his brother’s attempt to undermine his authority. When he had his temper mostly under control, Inuyasha told his half-brother, “Don’t start reacting emotionally Sesshoumaru. We would have to travel slower on the ground to be careful of Karma’s injuries. Even if she does wake in the air, I doubt she’d know where she was. She was already exhausted when we were attacked. After Shippo had to take the antidote for Karma’s poison dagger, he was out for hours and the one he was struck with was weaker than the dagger Karma decided to stick herself with. Karma is just a human without the healing abilities of demons so I don’t think she’ll be awake for at least a day, maybe more.”
The demon lord pondered Inuyasha’s words irritated that he was reacting emotionally and couldn’t deny it.
“If the feline is capable of it,” Sesshoumaru offered in a compromise, “Rin shall accompany the rest of your pack on its back, while you join Karma and I on my steed along with Jaken. Karma would be comforted by both of our presences should she awaken before we reach your village.”
Inuyasha looked doubtful of Sesshoumaru’s intentions but turned to Sango questioningly.
“I can carry Rin that distance easily.” Shippo announced before Sango could confirm that Kirara could indeed handle all of their weight.
“If Sesshoumaru agrees,” Inuyasha said with pride in Shippo’s offer, “you’ll have to stay between us and Kirara, just in the slight chance you do tire.”
The kitsune nodded in agreement of the precaution before he faced Sesshoumaru and assured him confidently, “I won’t let Rin fall. I give you my word on that.”
Sesshoumaru knew Shippo was able to bare Rin’s slight weight because he had witnessed the fox flying Inuyasha and Miroku to the castle in belated aid of his chosen mate and Sango.
“See that you do not or you shall face my wrath, boy.” The demon lord consented.
Everyone mounted their assigned rides and took to the air, heading for home. Sesshoumaru pushed his beast to fly as fast as it could, forcing Shippo and Kirara to keep pace. They stopped briefly for lunch and to let Shippo rest, even though the kitsune said he didn’t need it. Once the group was again airborne, Inuyasha’s nerves finally snapped from an irritating clink coming from bags hanging on either side of the lizard.
“What the fuck is that damn noise?” He shouted.
“Have more respect, Scum, those are heirlooms passed to Lord Sesshoumaru from your father.” Jaken said earning himself a hard whack from Inuyasha.
“I shall explain them to you at a more opportune moment, Inuyasha. Until which time, refrain from shouting so loudly, you may wake Karma.”
“Feh,” Inuyasha said lowly, “A damn tsunami wouldn’t wake her up right now.”
Sesshoumaru didn’t bother to comment on the fact Inuyasha obeyed his orders anyway.
