InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ New Journey ❯ 11 ( Chapter 11 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]
Their jobs were fairly straightforward. Koga had the most interesting
job, and his was an unusual predicament. When he and his buddy arrived
at the room that they were to serve in, koga glanced at what they were
to guard. It turned out to be a piece of fur, very sleek and shiny. They
were left alone, guarding the fur dilligently. Koga was thinking about
how to get rid of the other guard so Kagura and Shippo could get the
fur. He sized up the other youkai with him. It was a neko youkai, like
Kagome. It wouldn't be hard to bring down, but it would raise many
questions. Suddenly a brainstorm hit him like a bolt of lightning,
illuminating the weary scarps of ideas. Thoughts began to whirl and chase each
other about, a mind twister. The storm grew in intensity until Koga knew
exactly what to do.
"Yo, you!" Koga said to the other youkai. He needed a certain phrase to
be said right before he said his for the signal to activate. "What type
of demon are you?"
"I am a neko youkai. I serve Lord Sesshomaru." Koga grinned crazily. It
was obvious that his partner thought that he was crazy, the neko kept
on edging away from Koga.
"Really? Do you cough up hairballs?' Koga asked, activating the signal.
It had been chosen because everyone would recognize the words. Kagome
had told a very funny joke about a man who had asked a neko youkai about
his hairballs. What was said in between didn't matter, so the
Sesshomaru comment could pass. Almost immediantly after the phrase was finished,
Kagura and Shippo burst through the door, and knocked the neko out
cold. Shippo and Kagura were in their normal forms, and Shippo managed to
pick up the fur that Koga and the neko had been guarding.
"Knock me out too, give me a few bruises." Koga said, hating the fact
that this was necessary.
"Why?" Shippo asked.
"So that no one thinks that I helped you steal the fur and I'm not
executed!" Koga said, shouting in a whisper. Kagura shot him an apologetic
look before knocking him out cold. He never felt any of the blows that
followed, but he had the marks to show for them.
*outside*
"Great job kid! Now all we need is my talisman!" Kagura exclaimed,
really happy at having found one already. Her grin then faltered, because
she was remembering what she had done to Koga. Granted, he had asked for
it, but she had still beaten up her mate! That didn't sit well with
her. Shippo, noticing this, told her that she was really cool, and that it
wasn't her fault. Koga had wanted her to do it, and it had either been
getting knocked out or executed, so she had done right. Plus, they'd
have a funny story to tell the others. Kagura grinned, happy that at
least the kid was happy. When they got back to camp, Shippo strutted
around, his chest puffed out, the image of importance. He was showing off his
new fur to anyone who'd see, and he told how he had single-handedly
overpowered the guards, of which there were now 100, and he had managed to
get past poison bombs, which seemd to explode every few feet. The way
he told it, you'd've thought that he had gone into a death trap
and barely escaped alive. Kagura simply snorted and corrected his
story quietly to the others. The others tried not to burst out with
laughter as Shippo told his tale of bravery to them. They were having a great
time. All they had to do was find the other talisman and get out of
there. They made themselves comfortable by the embers of the dying fire.
they would speak more the next morning.
The next morning, Kagura read the last riddle to herself.
Flying free,
Free as the wind,
Catch me if you can,
What am I?
Kagura was puzzled, and she decided to figure this one out by herself.
None of the others asked about the riddle, and none asked her to read
it. The entire day was pretty quiet for all but their friends in the
castle.
*in The Castle*
Kagome and Nari had been assigned to clean things today. Koga and Shif
were on Sesshomaru guard duty. Everything was very dull, at least until
Kagome and Nari came upon a cage with a little bird in it. The bird
seemed to be insubstantial, and nothing could touch it. The girls were
shocked when they realized what this meant. They sent up the signal, and
prepared to slip quietly away. Their plan would have worked had
Sesshomaru not been passing by at that exact moment. What he saw was two women
sending out a signal signifying something important to persons unknown.
He stopped, and the rest of his guard stopped as well. Koga took a
great whiff of air, and his fears were confirmed. The reason that they had
stopped were Kagome and Nari. He quietly relayed the information to
Shif, who just nodded.
"Who are you?" Sesshomaru asked quietly, malice and a sense of
'answer-me-wrong-and-die' tinting his voice. Kagome and Nari turned around,
noticing that they had an audience.
"Kill them." Sesshomaru said in a bored voice. "Shif, Koga. Prove
yourselves. Attack." This promises to be interesting to watch. A cat and a
human dying under the claws of a wolf and the fists of a human. He
thought. Unbeknownst to him, he had just made a huge moral dilema for Koga
and Shif. They were spared for a few seconds because Kagura had just
burst through the wall.
"I saw the......signal.........." Kagura's voice trailed off as she too
noticed the demon lord standing in front of her. She gulped. Inuyasha
wasn't here. The rest of the group had gone back to the village a while
ago. They didn't think that it had been very productive to the safety
of the group if they stayed. Someone might catch them.
"Her as well." Sesshomaru said. "What are you waiting for? Attack!"
Koga and Shif nodded once to each other, then ran and attacked their
chosen victim. Claw speared fleash, and hands drew blood from sheer force of
Shif's punches.
