Chapter 10
Two hours later after the kitchen window had been replace, the locks changed, the house some-what put back together and Sango on her way home.
Kagome flopped down on the couch, rested her head on a throw pillow, and closed her eyes.
'So he had actually followed through with is threat' she thought.
Hiten had said she would be sorry. God, was she sorry. Sorry shed ever layed eyes on the slimy bastard.
She picked up the phone, dialed the number for Norday Investments, and, before she could lose her nerve asked for Hiten.
"Hiten is out of town" the receptionist said.
'I dont doubt it' Kagome thought bitterly.
"He left yesterday morning."Kagome sat straight up" Are you sure? Yesterday was monday, he left in the morning?"
"Whos calling please?""Uh...Mrs. Chambers, i had an appointment with him yesterday. We were suppose to meet for lunch. He didnt show.""Im sorry Mrs. Chambers, im sure he tried to get in touch with you to cancel. It was imperative that he be in Fort Worth for a conferance.""Are you certain he left int the morning?""Yes.""I see, Thank you." with that said Kagome hung up.
The break in had occured sometime in the afternoon. If hiten had left in the morning, theirs no way he could have done it.
...
Kagome began wandering aournd the house straightening things up a bit. She was about to leave the guest room when something about the desk top made her pause.
She had waxed the furniture in that room nearly five days ago. In the left corner a narrow ribbon of polished wood gleamed through the fine layer of dust that had settled on the surface. What had been on the desk that wasnt their now? She wondered. Of course. The framed 8X10 photograph shippou had gived her as a birthday present a year ago was missing.
She pulled open the desk drawars slowly, all the usual items lay inside...undisturbed.
She collapsed into the swivel chair to think. The last time shed been in this room was the night before-with the police. They were finishing up in the study, before they were called upstairs. She had come back to the room to get the papers for the guns for Takahashi.
Shippou couldnt have taken it without permission, it had to be somewhere in the room. She checked the bookshelf, the small closet, and all the drawers. It didnt make sense. She stood at the dest and wondered why someone would take it.
A lound bang, like a sonic boom, shook the house. Kagome jumped, and spun around, knocking a dried flower arrangment off the dest. Her heart held off a beat, then promptly made up the lost beat by thumping a rapid tatoo into her chest.
When the lawn mover spouttered into action, she exhaled slowly and silently cursed hawkins. She sighed picking up the flowers, and placed them back on the desk. She grabbed the phone and dialed the police, asking for Detective Takahashi.
"Takahashi speaking.""Its Kagome Higurashi."
"What can i do for you Miss. Higurashi?""I feel stuped for calling but you said if anything was missing...""Whats missing?""A photograph.""A photograph of what or-whom?"Me."Kagome closed her eyes, and pinched the bridge of her nose.
A long silence. ' What was he thinking?' she wondered.
"Are you sure you didnt move it? Give it to someone?""I tore the room apart looking for it.""You mentioned you had a son. Could he have taken it?""No.""Is anything else missing?""I dont think so." she said shaking her head to know one in particular.
"Ok. Well i can be out their in a couple of hours to take a report."Kagoome looked at her watch. It was eleven o'clock.
"In the meantime, i want you to look around and see if anything else is missing. Understand?""Yes" she said slowly "I understand."She replaced the reciever with out saying ghoodbye, and, not at all thrilled with her mission, began to search though her underwear drawer.
She had thrown out all the slashed and spraypainted clothes. Very little underwear had escaped. Sorting through the dresser drawers, the trash, and even the laundry, she could not find one pair of her lace bikini panties.
