NO LOOKING BACK

Chapter 3: The chase is on

Inuyasha walked through his forest, heading towards Goshinboku. He needed some alone time before he returned back to the village. His bare feet crashed against the soggy soil, wet from the sudden rain. With each step he made, he left a footprint behind that instantly got filled with water that fell from the sky. The rain hid away his tears and helped him ease the pain of an aching heart.

`Inuyasha' The boy stopped and stared blankly ahead.
`She…she said th-that she was…tired' He shook his head and broke in to a run. He ran as fast as a hanyou possibly could. He didn't know why, but something told him to get as far away as possible from Kikyous grave and never look back.
He remembered the words he once heard from a young girl that he used to know…
``Never hold on to the past Inuyasha…or else…it will kill you'' he smiled slightly.

Kagome told him that…oh yes, he remembered that day…he was so upset because he didn't know where Kikyou was for days, then Kagome had enough and began lecturing him about how people hold on to the past to strong, that in the end the memories and the sadness kills them inside. It sounded unbelievably true…but it was.

Shaking his head to get rid of all the thoughts that overflowed his mind. Inuyasha ran down the hill, trying to suppress all the anger that filled his heart.
`First Kagome…now Kikyou…am I really going to end up alone in the end?'
The hanyou suddenly flew back, but managed to keep his ground due to his fast reflexes. `What's going on?' He diverted his eyes up in to the once blue sky.

A ray of purple light suddenly flew up and called in the blackest clouds in the sky. The wind picked up it's pace and Inuyasha had to cover his face, to prevent from getting hit with all the flying stones and branches. A loud thunder shook the earth and someone let out a deafening scream. The hanyou had to cover his ears to prevent from going inside due to the hurting voice. Just as it had all begun, so it had ended in a split of a second.

`Kagome?' Grandpa slid the door close and walked towards his granddaughter.

Kagome was shaking with fear, leaning with her back against the wooden wall.
Her eyes were wide open and her lips were trembling. For some reason all the colour from her face drained away. She held her right hand firmly against her chest and she appeared to be clutching a white hair ribbon, just like the one Aiko made her ponytails with this morning.

Grandpa made his way towards where Kagome was standing and gently took her left hand.
`Kagome…' He sighed and somehow tried to make her know that he understood how she felt `Let go…it's time for a new beginning' he kissed her hand `Take as much time as you need child…for once you decide to take this step, there will be no turning back' and with that he was gone.

Kagome didn't take in his wise words. How could she? She was shocked and scared like she had never been before. Her daughter was gone. Gone through the barrier in the well. How was that possible? The bone eaters well had been sealed for years now. If Kagome couldn't open it, how could a mere child then? Firstly Kagome thought of Kikyou, but even if a miko dies, her power remains on earth, amongst the living, just like the time when Inuyasha was pinned to Goshinboku.

Kagomes knees became week. Soon her whole body gave in and she fell to the ground.
Shaking her head, Kagome began trembling and soon tears flowed down her face and on to her hands. `No…no…' she began telling herself that this was all a bad dream, as her sobs grew louder and stronger. In that moment, something snapped in her head. The image of her, crying at the bottom of the well, slowly reappeared in her brown orbs. This was the exact same way she lost Inuyasha and the exact same way, she got separated from her second family.

Gathering all her strength, Kagome slowly stood up and caught herself on the edge of the well. She folded up her dress and swung one leg over. Gathering all of her courage, Kagome took a deep breath and closed her eyes. `I'm not letting you take her away Inuyasha…not this time' and with that she jumped.

`Inuyasha!' The hanyou reacted to his name being called out in the distance.
He turned in the direction his ears told him to and ran off. Jumping from tree to tree, something told Inuyasha that what just happened, had nothing good in store for him.
He grabbed the hilt of his sword and clutched it tightly. What ever was waiting, he was going to be ready.

Inuyasha finally reached the village. Everything was on fire. Houses were burning, even fields and barns. He spent no time waiting before he pulled out his sword. He looked around for the monster that had caused this, but he found nothing. `Inuyasha!' He turned his head and saw Sango and Miroku running towards him. He stored away his sword and jumped down, landing right before them.

`What happened?' He asked.

`We don't know. All we saw was a light then everything went on fire. We're all doing our best to put the fire out. What do you think this could be Inuyasha?' Sango asked, but much to her surprise the hanyou had no idea as to what could've happened. Sango carried on talking, just when Inuyasha caught a glimpse of a white figure that disappeared in to the forest.

`Wait here' he ordered and then ran towards the place, where the old well used to be.
No sooner he was there that he saw that everything had been destroyed. The whole ground had been burned and ashes were flying everywhere. `This…it can't be…Kagome?' The wind carried his hair to the right, as the cherry blossoms danced around before his face.

But no, it wasn't Kagome. Inuyasha caught a trail of tiny footprints, leading in to the forest.
`Who…what?' Apparently someone destroyed the magic well. The hanyou gritted his teeth and lowered his head. His hands curled in to fists and his whole body began trembling. Being here brought back all those long forgotten memories. Even thought she was gone for years now, he had never give up hope of seeing her again. Come to think of it, that was the only thing that kept him alive…hope. Hope to be with Kikyou…Hope to live a normal life…Hope to perhaps see her again someday. And now his only hope had been destroyed.

`This was my only way ofever seeing Kagome again…' A sharp pulse went through his spine, making him wince in pain as he remembered the girl he had met a long time ago.
`I still hoped…even if it was impossible…' Inuyasha could slowly hear his heart beating in his ears. Burning blue stripes engraved in to his cheeks as his claws and fangs grew bigger. The wind around him blew faster with every minute.

Suddenly his blood overflowed his eyes and his pupils lessened.
`I'm going to find you…no matter where you go…no matter where you hide…I'll kill the one responsible for this…'

'Mommy?' A child cried out.

Aiko turned in a circle, then made her way down the long forest path. All she could recall was being back at the shrine with her mother, before she was swallowed by a flashing green light. She travelled through a sea of little lights that looked like souls and suddenly the world was beneath her. She began falling faster and faster, then gently landed on the ground. She got scared of not knowing where she was, so she ran in to a near by forest.

Everything seemed different. The smells were different, the sun was different, even the trees were different. Looking right and left, Aiko parted her lips and became very still. Soon a butterfly sat on her nose. She chuckled childishly and clapped her hands. Smoothing her dress she laughed and began dancing in circles. At least something cheered her up.
`Ifthere's bugs then there is…' Aiko pushed through some bushes `Water! Yay!' She happily squealed and ran towards the spring.

After ending her thirst, Aiko sat back and observed the fish in the water. She began humming herself a song Kagome used to sing to her whenever she got scared or couldn't sleep at night.
Letting out a sigh, Aiko spared a big wide smile to the yellow butterfly sitting on her knee.
At that moment she wished she had wings so she could fly back home.

Lost in her childish thoughts, the butterfly suddenly flew away. Aiko tried going after it, but it was already too high. At the thought of being alone again, a weird chill suddenly sneaked up the little girls spine. She swiftly turned her head at the figure that was observing her from the other side of the rivers bench.

With no clue as to what danger she was in, Aiko ran forward `Who are you?'
