It was three days since Kikyo had died in InuYasha's arms. A cloud lingered over the group as they watched InuYasha suffer. But no one suffered more for him than Kagome. For all InuYasha's unshed tears, Kagome shed them in buckets.

 

On this day, the morning of the third day after Kikyo's death, Kagome woke up and squinted into the morning sun. Her eyes hurt from all her crying, and there was a heavy, painful weight in her chest where her heart should be.

 

With a shuddering breath, she steeled herself and looked around for InuYasha. He was not there, but she knew he would never go far. His friends were all he had left, and although he didn't voice it, more important to him than ever.

 

`If only he would come to me,' she thought. `If only he would let me ease his pain.'

 

Slowly, she sat up in her sleeping bag. Shippo lay sleeping next to her, and Kagome saw that Miroku and Kirara were sleeping as well. But Sango was awake, her arms folded around her drawn up knees, staring into the embers of their campfire, lost in her own sad thoughts. Kagome sighed and Sango heard her and snapped out of her reverie.

 

“Good morning,” Sango said softly.

 

“Good morning,” Kagome replied. “Did you see InuYasha leave?”

 

“Yes,” said Sango, “he went towards the river.”

 

The demon slayer beckoned her over. Stiffly, Kagome rose and sat next to her.

 

“Kagome, we can't go on like this,” said Sango. “InuYasha can't go on like this.”

 

“I know,” Kagome replied quietly.

 

“Kagome…you love InuYasha, don't you?” Sango said hesitantly.

 

Kagome blushed.

 

“Yes, I do,” she said. “Is it that obvious?”

 

“To me it is, but we are both women. Men can be a bit dense about matters of the heart.”

 

“That's for sure,” Kagome sighed.

 

“If you love him, you are the only who can help him,” said Sango. “Please, go to him, make him see that he may have lost his first love, but he has you.”

 

“I…I know you are right,” Kagome whispered, a tremor in her voice. “I never told him I loved him because of Kikyo. Now she's gone…I guess it's time.”

 

“No better time than now,” said Sango. “You may be his only chance to be saved from his grief.”

 

“All right,” said Kagome in resignation, “I'll go.”

 

Kagome stood up clasping her hands, and took some deep, shuddering breaths in an effort to quell her anxieties. `I must do this,' she thought. `I must save InuYasha from himself for all the countless times he's saved me. If only he would take my freely offered love, please, let him take it.'

 

She calmed herself further by smoothing out her clothes and running her fingers through her hair, and then she left the camp heading down the path towards the river. Her heart hammered in her ears as she got close, drowning out the morning forest noises around her. Soon, the path opened up to the banks of the river. She stood by the water's edge, looking around. Finally, she found InuYasha, sitting on a rock that jutted out in to the water, a few yards down stream from where she stood. He sat with his legs crossed beneath him, his hands in his sleeves. His eyes were not visible because his head was bowed and his hair obscured them. She swallowed and walked over, then carefully crawled out on the rock. He did not look up as she sat next to him.

 

“InuYasha,” she said softly, and got no response.
