Chapter 4

And You Took My Love

Sango raised her head from her hands as she heard them approach.

“Kagome!” she said in relief. “You really scared me - running away like that!”

“Yes,” said Miroku. “I don't know if that was a wise thing to do, when we don't even know what could be wrong with you.”

“I feel fine,” Kagome said reassuringly.

“We need to get Kagome to Kaede,” said InuYasha, “and see if we can find out what this new power she has is about.”

“Yes,” said Miroku. “A wise decision. Kaede may be able to help us.”

“We're going to go there now, so let's pack up and get moving,” InuYasha said.

It did not take them long to repack Kagome's backpack, and soon they were ready to be on their way. Kagome got on InuYasha's back, while the others rode Kirara in an effort to make a speedy journey. The rest of the day passed without incident, and by nightfall they had made good time. After camp had been made for the night, Miroku and Sango wanted to discuss the strange power Kagome had developed, but InuYasha and Kagome were hesitant to tell them the little they had guessed. Sango and Miroku had no clue what they could be holding back about.

“Kagome, if you have any ideas about what is going on, you should tell us,” said Miroku.

“Yes,” said Sango. “We're your friends. We are all in this together.”

Kagome looked up hesitantly at InuYasha, as if to say, should I?

The hanyou frowned, nodded, began to blush and leapt away.

“What's the matter with InuYasha?” said Shippo.

Kagome sighed and ran her hand through her hair.

“He's embarrassed to be around when I tell you what we know,” she said.

Miroku, Sango and Shippo looked at each other in astonishment.

“I don't even know if I should be talking about this in front of a child,” Kagome said, blushing as she glanced over at Shippo.

“Hey, I'm not that little!” he said. “I'm in this as much as Miroku and Sango are.”

“Okay,” Kagome said, nodding and looking at her lap.

“We first noticed the blue light energy when we first….had sex.”

Sango's eyes went wide in surprise and then she quickly turned to glare at Miroku, whose eyes were sparkling mischievously.

“Don't you dare say anything perverted, monk,” Sango said warningly.

Miroku covered his mouth with his hand to cover his smile and tried to compose himself.

“So how many times have you noticed this energy occurrence?” he asked.

“Twice,” Kagome said, flushing. “Both times we…did it.”

Miroku nodded his head. “Interesting…” he said.

“Let's drop it for now, until we know more, okay?” Kagome said, feeling rather uncomfortable even though these were her friends.

“Okay,” said Sango reassuringly, and reached out to briefly squeeze her hand.

Then Sango turned to Miroku. “No ribbing InuYasha about this when he gets back, you hear me?” she said threateningly.

“Alright, alright,” he replied.

Everyone got ready to go to sleep. Kagome snuggled down in her sleeping bag, and as she felt herself drifting off to sleep, she felt a whoosh of air next to her. Looking up, she saw InuYasha silhouetted by the campfire light. He reached down and stroked the hair out of her face, then gave her a sweet and tender kiss on the lips. Before she could say a word, he had leapt into a tree branch above her head and composed himself to go to sleep.

`Sleep well, my love,' she thought, and fell asleep.

The next day, they resumed their journey. But as they were crossing some rocky terrain, InuYasha could sense they would shortly be having company. Miroku and Sango felt the demonic aura approaching as well. InuYasha put Kagome down as Miroku and Sango and Shippo dismounted from Kirara. The ground shook with the approach of the demon. InuYasha waited, Tessaiga drawn and held in front of him, Kagome safely behind him. It was huge and like nothing they had ever seen before, like a cross between some kind of lizard and a bear.

“I sense shikon jewel shards,” it boomed. “You will give them to me or suffer the consequences!”

“Bring it on!” said InuYasha. “I'm ready for you.”

He ran towards the beast as it emitted some sort of ray from between its eyes, striking right behind InuYasha. In a flash, a chasm opened up underneath him and he did not have time to leap away.

Kagome gasped in fear, and her hand shot out. Miroku, Sango, and Shippo watched in amazement and fear as the blue beam of energy left Kagome's hand and engulfed the falling half demon, levitating him to safety. With InuYasha out of harm's reach, Miroku loosed the wind tunnel enough to pull the demon into the pit it had created. It fell with a roar of anger into the abyss. The blue beam faltered, and Kagome staggered, falling unconscious.
