On the porch of monk Masahiro's house, Kagome sat and listened as the monk gave her a rough idea of what needed to be done. When breakfast had ended, Kagome had tried to talk to InuYasha, but he was in no mood to listen to her or anyone else. He sat away from them, on the other side of the porch, hands in his sleeves, a petulant, thoughtful look on his face.
“You will begin every morning with some Yoga exercises and meditation,” said monk Masahiro.
“Oh, I did some of that in school,” said Kagome.
“That is good that you are familiar with yoga,” said Masahiro. “It is the key to attuning your mind and body into a calm, receptive, state.”
`InuYasha, calm and receptive?' Kagome thought. `Yeah, right! How are we going to make that happen?'
“Before the hanyou can be receptive to the teachings of yoga, and after that the teachings of Tantric sex, he must be able to release himself from his anger,” Masahiro continued
Kagome sighed and looked down at her hands.
“Do you have any ideas on how we can do that?” she said, her voice dripping with uncertainty.
“I do not believe the hanyou will accept my help in this matter,” said Masahiro.
InuYasha had been silently listening to them, and thought, `Damn straight I won't let that pompous, dried-up old imp relieve me of my anger.'
“It's up to you Kagome,” Masahiro said. “He obviously loves and trusts you. And you have a very strong, karmic bond, which should help you to reach him.”
Kagome bit her lip, unconsciously twisting her skirt in her hands. She thought about the years of pain and loneliness InuYasha had endured, and the resultant anger at his lot in life. And there was also his mother's death, which she was sure he had never really got over, never truly dealt with. To top it all off there was the recent, albeit second, death of Kikyo. Not to mention his all-consuming hatred and anger at Naraku, who had destroyed his first chance to find love and happiness all those years ago.
It all made Kagome's head swim, and she groaned and buried her face in her hands. Suddenly she felt a gentle touch on her shoulder.
“There, there child,” said Masahiro. “Be strong, let your love for him be your strength.”
Suddenly, InuYasha was hovering over them, growling and flexing his claws menacingly.
“Take your hand off her, you filthy monk!” he yelled.
Kagome rolled her eyes and looked up at him in horror.
“InuYasha, stop it!” she yelled at him in exasperation. “Get a grip already, he wasn't trying to do anything!”
“I assure you, young hanyou, my intentions on your miko are pure,” said Masahiro, looking at the bristling hanyou and totally unfazed by him.
InuYasha growled and glowered.
“Ohhhh…” said Kagome, falling over on her back in mortification and despair.
`Yeah, like this is really going to work,' she thought.
“Kagome, are you okay?” asked InuYasha, suddenly solicitous.
“No, I'm not okay,” she said peevishly. She took a deep breath and sat up.
“I'm going for a walk,” she said, standing up. “I need some time to think.”
Her shoulders were hunched, her arms folded in front of her as she angrily walked away. InuYasha watched her leave, dumbfounded.
`What did I do?' he thought.
As Kagome walked past the fields, tears came unbidden to her eyes. How could she reach him? Was her love strong enough to get past…that?! He was always on the defensive, always looking for a fight, unless he was with his own close group of friends.
`Oh, but I do love him so much,' she thought, remembering how sweet it was to wake up with him this morning. `And my life may depend on getting him through this, so we can practice what Masahiro has to teach us and control my powers before they consume me.'
Kagome reached the forest and wandered aimlessly into it. In an effort to take control of her raging fears and doubts, she leaned on a tree, closing her eyes, and tried to clear her head. She took some deep, calming breaths, inhaling the scent of the pungent, green forest around her.
`Breathe,' she thought, `just like Masahiro said - deep breaths in through the nose, out through the mouth.'
As she stood there, she felt a whoosh of air next to her, blowing at her hair and clothing, followed quickly by the sound of two feet lightly hitting the ground.
“Umm, Kagome?” said InuYasha. “Are you mad at me?”
She wiped the tears from her eyes and regarded him silently for a moment. He shifted uncomfortably under her gaze. Then she pushed off the tree and went up to him, leaning against him, her arms on his chest, and looked into his face. Instinctively, his arms went around her waist, supporting her.
“InuYasha, do you love me enough…to try?” she said.
`Try?” he said questioningly.
“To try and open up to me,” she said. “To let me help you deal with your anger, your pain.”
InuYasha frowned, and growled petulantly.
“What if I don't want to deal with my anger and pain?” he replied. “What if I want to keep it?”
“InuYasha, think!” she said. “Masahiro says we can't start to learn to do Tantric sex until you can relax, until you can divorce yourself from your anger!”
“Well, maybe we can find another way to deal with this kundalini thing,” he replied.
“You're not thinking!” she said angrily, and pounded her fists on his chest. “This is all we have to go on, and he said that if we don't learn Tantric sex and clear my chakras, I will eventually die!”
InuYasha sniffed and blinked a couple times, looking uncertain.
“So what'll it be, InuYasha?” she said. “Will you work with me to release your pent-up anger, or do you want to just wait until I slowly die?”
InuYasha gasped in horror, and hugged her tightly to him.
“No, Kagome, you can't die,” he said, his voice trembling. “If there is truly no other way…I will try and let you help me get rid of my anger.”
Kagome breathed a big sigh of relief, closing her eyes and burying her face in his chest. A few more tears escaped her eyes, staining his haori. The warmth of him, the smell of him, and the steady beat of his heart under her ear helped to soothe her and quiet her mind. Gods, she loved him so much! She had to believe that together, they would get through this. InuYasha could be so dense sometimes, but together, they could accomplish anything, if they put their hearts in it.
