Chapter 34

There's Nothing Like You and I, Baby…Except Our Baby

InuYasha lay on the floor on his side, drumming his fingers on the floor and tearing unconsciously at the carpet with his claws. What was taking Kagome so long? Damn, he wished he knew what she was up to. What was so mysterious that she could not talk about it in front of her family? The jeans were pinching him uncomfortably in the crotch and he wiggled a bit, scowling. Then he finally heard her coming down the stairs. He turned to look at her and was disturbed by her expression. She looked pale and solemn, and a little green around the gills.

“Let's go, InuYasha,” she said flatly.

“About time,” he grumbled, and got up, grabbing the sandals to put on at the door.

They walked out of the house, and InuYasha looked at her, waiting for some sort of explanation. Kagome glanced at him, biting her lip, and sighed. She could see his rising impatience and knew she had to say something soon before he exploded.

“InuYasha, did you ever think about what might happen, us having so much sex?” she said slowly.

“No,” said InuYasha. “Just what are you getting at? Out with it, already!”

Rolling her eyes and shaking her head, she frowned at him.

“Well, we are going to a clinic,” she said, “where they will be able to tell me…if I am pregnant.”

“What?!” InuYasha exploded, and stopped dead in his tracks.

“You mean you haven't thought that this might happen?” Kagome said incredulously.

“I…I guess I never really thought about it,” he said. “Why…do you think you are pregnant?”

Kagome didn't say anything, just kept walking. InuYasha had a sinking feeling inside, and felt a rising panic. This couldn't be happening. There was too much they needed to do. What about their plans to defeat Naraku once they had completed their training with Miroku and Sango? It felt like the world was being turned upside down on him, and he really wished he didn't know what he suspected right now. Maybe if they ignored it, it just wouldn't be true…

They walked the blocks to the clinic in silence. At the clinic, they still did not talk as Kagome filled out the forms. But as they were waiting, InuYasha could see how nervous and close to tears Kagome was, and felt sorry for her. So he reached out and took her hand, squeezing it reassuringly, and she looked up and gave him a tremulous smile.

“Higurashi, Kagome,” said a nurse, walking into the waiting room with her clipboard.

“Well, this is it,” Kagome whispered. “Wait here.”

Kagome followed the nurse. She was directed to go to a bathroom and urinate in a cup and mark it with her name. Then she was told to go back to the waiting room.

“So?” said InuYasha as she sat down beside her.

“They need to do a test, and then they will tell us,” said Kagome wearily.

“They can test to find out if you are pregnant?” he said wonderingly.

“Yes,” said Kagome simply.

InuYasha made a low growl of consternation and subsided.

“The doctor will see you now, Higurashi,” the nurse said ten minutes later.

“Can he come with me?” said Kagome, putting her hand on InuYasha's arm.

“Yes, that is fine,” said the nurse, and turned around, leading them to the office.

A middle-aged doctor in a white coat sat behind a desk in his office and looked up as they arrived.

“Have a seat, please,” he said.

Nervously Kagome and InuYasha sat down.

“Well, it's early,” said the doctor. “If you had not come here, a home pregnancy test would probably have not picked it up.”

“So you are saying…” said Kagome, her voice trembling a bit.

“Yes, Ms. Higurashi, you are pregnant,” the doctor said, steepling his hands in front of him.

A sob escaped Kagome's lips uncontrollably. InuYasha paled and gasped.

“It says here you are sixteen,” said the doctor.

“I'll be seventeen in two months,” said Kagome, her voice shaking.
“So, what do you plan to do about this?” said the doctor.

It was too much for Kagome, and she started to cry, bending over in her chair as she sobbed. InuYasha looked at her in dismay, and reached out to touch her arm.

“I take it you are the father, young man?” the doctor inquired.

“Yeah - why else would I be here with her?” InuYasha spat. “And just what did you mean when you asked about her plans?”

“Well, are you planning on having and keeping the child?” the doctor said. “Or are you wanting to either terminate the pregnancy or to give up the child for adoption?”

InuYasha looked aghast.

“I want this baby,” said Kagome sniffing. “I could never not have your baby, InuYasha. I love you and this baby was born out of our love.”

“Well, then. In that case, here is a prescription for prenatal vitamins,” said the doctor. “And here is a list of what not to eat while you are pregnant. Before you leave, you should make another appointment with the nurse to see me in a month's time.”

The doctor handed them to Kagome, and she reached for them with a trembling hand.

“Come on, let's get out of here,” growled InuYasha, and grabbed her hand, pulling her out of her chair as he stormed out of the office.

They left the building, and started off down the street.

“Are you mad at me?” said Kagome, as she stumbled after him.

InuYasha stopped and grabbed her in an embrace, holding her tight.

“No, I could never be mad at you over something like this,” he said softly. “I just had to get out of there before I leaped over that desk and gutted that doctor. Huh! `Terminate the pregnancy', indeed! What was he thinking!”

Kagome started sobbing with relief, and buried her head in his shoulder.

“InuYasha, I'm worried about the baby,” she sobbed. “It has been exposed to all the power that I have been channeling. What if that is hurting it in some way?”

A shudder of anger and fear went through InuYasha at her words. It was a horrifying thought that they might be putting their baby in jeopardy.

“We will have to ask Masahiro,” said InuYasha. “When did you want to go back?”

“I have some things I need to do first,” said Kagome. “Let's go back tomorrow.”

As they broke their embrace, Kagome staggered a little. Her legs were trembling from the shock, so InuYasha decided to pick her up. Placing her carefully on his back, he headed for the rooftops of the buildings, and leapt carefully from roof to roof until they got back to the shrine.
