Chapter 36
Didn't I Tell You What I Believe…Telling Masahiro
When InuYasha and Kagome returned to the Feudal Era, they were subdued. Somehow, Kagome had managed to avoid telling her family about the pregnancy. It was so early, and her fears for the baby so great, she did not want to tell them yet. Not until she and InuYasha knew more about how all that power being channeled through her body might be affecting it.
InuYasha and Kagome made their way from the well back to Kaede's village. Kagome had some treats for Shippo to make him feel better. But Shippo and Kaede could tell there was something wrong: When even InuYasha was acting reserved and quiet, there had to be something going on. For once, Shippo did not open his big mouth to ask. InuYasha's intensity made him nervous, and he felt that he might really get it from the hanyou this time even if Kagome gave him a `sit.'
“What do you think is bothering them?” said Shippo to Kaede as they watched them leave.
“I'm not sure,” Kaede responded. “But they will tell us when they are ready.”
As they made their way up the mountain, InuYasha held Kagome carefully on his back, as if he was afraid she would break. The miko put her arms around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder, her cheek rubbing occasionally against his. The soft feel of his skin, his warmth, solidity and familiar scent comforted her. There was an ache of fear and anxiety in her heart, but she felt much closer to InuYasha now than she ever had before. She was grateful at how solicitous and understanding he was being since they had found out the devastating news.
“InuYasha, should we speak to Masahiro alone before letting Sango and Miroku know what is going on, you think?” said Kagome.
“Yes, I think we need to,” said InuYasha. “Once we know what we may be facing, we will tell them.”
“That's what I thought, too.” Kagome said.
Kagome nestled deeper into his shoulder and closed her eyes with a sigh. InuYasha smiled slightly and held her closer, as the breeze blew back his hair and dappled sunshine fell on them through the trees. Gods, he loved her so much, the mother of his child. He had to believe that everything would be okay, that they would find a way to make everything work, while still protecting their unborn child. Nothing could stop him from finding the answers. The resolve in his heart and mind strengthened him against his doubts and fears, and he firmed his chin and narrowed his eyes with the force of his convictions.
Sitting and relaxing on the porch, Miroku, Sango and Masahiro were talking that afternoon when InuYasha and Kagome arrived. They stopped their conversation and looked up as InuYasha put Kagome down at the beginning of the garden path. Miroku and Sango had been with them too long not to notice that something was amiss. Kagome wasn't wearing her usual warm smile, and InuYasha seemed to be hovering over her even more protectively than usual.
“Hello, everyone,” said Kagome, as they approached the porch, and gave them a solemn smile.
“Something the matter?” said Masahiro mildly.
“We need to talk to you in private, monk,” growled InuYasha, and without another word or a look at his friends, he stalked into the house.
“Everything alright, Kagome?” asked Sango.
“We have to talk to Masahiro,” said Kagome. “When we are done, I promise you we will tell you what is going on.”
Miroku and Sango still looked concerned, but didn't say anything further as Kagome and Masahiro followed InuYasha into the house.
“So,” said Masahiro, closing the door, “what seems to be the problem?”
“Um, I'm pregnant,” said Kagome softly, looking at the floor.
InuYasha stood at Kagome's side, slightly behind her, arms crossed, while she told Masahiro about the pregnancy and expressed her fears. The old monk listened calmly and intently, nodding occasionally. When she was finished talking, there was silence for a few moments while Masahiro digested what he had been told.
InuYasha was getting impatient.
“Out with it, monk!” he growled angrily. “This is our child - we need to know if it's safe!”
“I can't say what effect that Kagome's powers may have had on the baby already,” said Masahiro slowly. “But I can teach Kagome to shield it from any further surges in her power.”
A feeling of relief came over Kagome that at least there would be some way to protect her baby from further harm. She staggered a little, because she had been under such stress, and InuYasha caught her.
“That's such good news,” Kagome said, looking up into InuYasha's concerned face.
“It is?” said InuYasha.
“Yes,” said Kagome. “If I can shield the baby, may be it has a chance.”
With a sigh of understanding and relief, InuYasha closed his eyes and took Kagome in an embrace.
“That is good,” said InuYasha, kissing the top of her head.
Then InuYasha opened his eyes and looked at Masahiro.
“So you better start teaching Kagome how to protect our baby immediately,” he said with a scowl.
“I assure you, young hanyou, I will,” said Masahiro in a placating voice. “But shouldn't you be telling your friends outside what is going on? I'm sure they are concerned.”
“Yes, your right,” said Kagome, “and I need to talk to Sango about something, as well.”
The three of them went back outside to the porch, where Miroku and Sango still waited anxiously to find out what was going on.
“I'm sorry,” said Kagome smiling a lot more like her old self, and putting them more at ease. “I'll fill you in on what has happened.”
When Kagome told them she was pregnant, Miroku looked concerned and Sango startled, covering her mouth with her hand. Their reactions did not deter Kagome from telling them about her and InuYasha's fears for the baby, and that Masahiro said he could help.
“So does that mean the Tantric sex training stops?” said Miroku.
“Only until I teach the young miko how to shield the baby,” said Masahiro. “When she has confidently mastered this, there should be no reason not to resume the training.”
Everyone looked relieved to hear this except Sango. Not that Sango was upset that this did not end the Tantric sex training - only that she had not committed herself to go through with it yet, anyway.
“Sango, can I talk to you a moment?” said Kagome, rising up from where she was sitting and moving towards the demon slayer.
“Sure, Kagome,” said Sango. “What is it?”
“Let's go for a walk,” said Kagome, extending her hand to Sango to help her up.
“Are you sure that's a good idea?” said InuYasha, frowning.
Shaking her head and looking at him ruefully, Kagome replied, “I'm pregnant, InuYasha, but that doesn't mean I will break if you are not around.”
“Hmph,” said InuYasha with a sour expression. He wasn't totally convinced.
InuYasha, Masahiro, and Miroku watched as the two girls walked quietly down the path away from the house and headed towards the forest.
