Chapter 42
Didn't I Tell You What I Believe…The Hanyou Menace
Kagome stood on the platform, stunned, as she took in the destruction around her. Nervously, she tried to look around and see what had happened to everyone. When she had been trying to control the huge surge of power, she had lost track of everything and everyone.
“InuYasha?” called Kagome. “Where are you?”
Kagome heard a groan coming from the gaping hole in the wall of Masahiro's house and spun around to look. Slowly, InuYasha pulled himself out of the hole, shaking off splinters of wood from his body and hair.
“I'm okay,” said InuYasha, reaching for the back of his head to remove a particularly big piece of wood. “Where are the others?”
“Miroku? Sango?” Kagome called, walking in a circle around the platform as she searched.
Faint replies came from the field, and Kagome was relieved. But InuYasha was worried - he had found the limp form of Masahiro. He knelt down by Masahiro's side, where he lay in the dirt. The old monk had been knocked out cold when InuYasha had struck him.
“Everyone, get over here!” yelled InuYasha.
Quickly, Kagome came over, followed by Miroku and Sango - who thankfully had not received any serious injuries. They gathered around the fallen monk, who still wasn't stirring.
“We should check for broken bones,” said Kagome. “Be careful not to move him too much, in case he has a serious neck or back injury.”
Gently, Kagome examined one side of Masahiro's body while Miroku did the same on the other. They did not feel any broken bones - it seemed he had just been knocked unconscious.
“Well, seeing the state of his house, maybe it's a good thing he is out,” said Miroku ruefully, sitting back and putting his hands on his knees and surveying the damage to the roof.
Looking at the house, Kagome bit her lip anxiously. She cringed at the thought of what Masahiro would do or say when he woke up and saw the wreckage. Wracking her brain for an idea to get them out of this mess, she hit upon something.
“We have to at least get this roof fixed,” said Kagome. “Maybe I can stay with Masahiro while you guys work on it.”
“Good idea,” said Sango, “but I don't know how much we will get accomplished before he wakes up.”
“I think I can help,” said Kagome, and raising both arms, beams of light shot out and engulfed Miroku, Sango and InuYasha simultaneously.
The three of them gasped as Kagome raised them until they could reach the roof.
“Okay, okay,” said InuYasha. “We get the point. Put us down so we can get dressed and we will gather the pieces of the roof.”
After Kagome had complied with InuYashas request, they all got dressed. Most of the roof lay in front of the house, strewn about the garden. InuYasha gathered it quickly, and Kagome raised Sango and Miroku to the roof with the pieces. Soon, InuYasha leaped to the top of the house, and stayed there putting the roof together as Kagome continued to lift Miroku and Sango up to him with the pieces. It was done just in time.
“Ohhhhh….” Masahiro moaned, moving his head stiffly on the ground.
“Are you alright?” said Kagome, kneeling at his side.
“What hit me?” said the monk hoarsely. “Yes, I remember. That hanyou menace of yours came flying at me off the platform.”
“Hey!” said InuYasha, peeking over the edge of the roof. “It wasn't my fault! We didn't know how much power Kagome was going to have to control.”
“I hear him, but I can't see him,” said Masahiro from the ground.
“Can you sit up?” said Kagome.
“Let us try,” Masahiro replied.
Kagome put a hand on his back and the other on his arm as he slowly tried to sit up.
“How are you feeling now?” said Kagome anxiously.
“Like my head was run over by a herd of wild horses,” said Masahiro wearily.
“You probably have a concussion,” said Kagome. “You should take it easy.”
InuYasha jumped off the roof and Miroku and Sango returned from the front of the house where they had been checking for anything that might have been missed.
Slowly, Masahiro turned around and saw the hole in the side of his house.
“What happened to my house?” said Masahiro in consternation.
“The hanyou menace went through the wall after knocking you out,” said Miroku.
“Will everyone stop calling me a menace!” InuYasha huffed, crossing his arms and pouting.
Kagome looked up at InuYasha and grinned, and everyone laughed a moment. This made InuYasha grumble more, his ears drooping.
“Don't worry about the house,” said Miroku. “We will fix it.”
“It better be fixed, otherwise we will all be feeling a draft tonight,” said Masahiro, shaking his head sadly, and then wincing at the pain. “As for you, young miko,” he said, turning to Kagome. “You must learn to control all this new power of yours better…but I don't think I want you doing that here.”
“Then where should we practice?” said Kagome meekly, clasping her knees.
“I will think about it,” said Masahiro, and raised his hand to his head, wincing again. “That is, when I can think.”
Sango and Kagome carefully helped Masahiro up and led him back to the house where he could lie down comfortably. This left Miroku and InuYasha to look over the hole and decide how they would fix it. They found leftover planks from the building of the platform and tools at the side of the house, and got to work.
At dinner that night, Masahiro decided that for now the safest place for them to practice was the hot spring. It still was not quite filled up yet after Kagome and InuYasha had blown it up. But at least it was away from any houses and such that might incur damage.
