Chapter 4

 

“What's with the grin baka?” Sesshoumaru said seeing Inuyasha smile slightly every time he took a sip of his coffee. Here he was trying to show an uncommon display of brotherly kindness by taking Inuyasha out to an expensive outdoor café and the baka stares off into space with a dumb smile plastered on his ungrateful features. Inuyasha was brought from his thoughts of Kagome to the present and looked at his brother.

 

“You know that doctor Kagome Higurashi.. I scored a date with her tonight.” Inuyasha beamed with pride to his brother who was staring off watching cars pass by.

 

“ You didn't forget about the dinner with the parents did you?” Sesshoumaru asked with a raised eyebrow. The small grimace the hanyou expressed showed that he did indeed forget. “What will you do little baka?” Inuyasha glared at Sesshoumaru as he thought of a solution.

 

“ I.. Maybe I'll just bring her over?” Sesshoumaru shrugged carelessly at the unsure hanyou. Inuyasha glanced at his watch and noticed it was beginning to get a little late. He pulled out a small wad of cash as he placed it under his mug of coffee. “ I gotta go.” Inuyasha mumbled a `thanks' to Sesshoumaru before running over to his car. As Sesshoumaru continued to enjoy his cup of coffee he noticed a slip of paper stuck within the wad of bills Inuyasha had left as a tip for their waitress. Slowly the youkai pulled the paper from under the mug and read the name, address and phone number. He chuckled lowly as his brother's carelessness. How would he find this woman he was so quickly enamored with if he didn't have phone number and address.

 

 

 

Inuyasha walked into his house and locked the door. Reaching into his pockets he took out its contents on his coffee table. He collapsed on the couch for a few moments as he enjoyed the plush cushions of his couch before reaching over the coffee table in search of Kagome's number.

 

`Shit.' The hanyou thought as he searched through his wallet and began to reach to find that damn number. After searching his car, jacket pocket and even behind the battery of his cell phone he gave up with a deep sigh. He would have to see that wonderful woman some other time. `Maybe on Monday I'll stop by the hospital…' Deciding that would be the only way to get her number again Inuyasha got ready to go to his parents' house.. alone.

 

 

 

 

Kagome stood in line to check out her groceries with Shippo whining as he sat in the cart. “But I don't want to take a nap when we get home!” The small kitsune said with a small pout.

 

“ If you want to grow big and tall you have to take naps. Mommy's a doctor remember.” Shippo opened his mouth to protest, but huffed and pouted silently. “That's a good boy.” Kagome bent her head down and kissed her son on the top of his head.

 

“ You're wonderful with children.” Kagome turned around to face Izayoi who was smiling brightly.

 

“ Thanks.” Kagome said bashfully and turned to her son and smiled. “He doesn't agree with you at the moment. Is your purse all right?”

 

“ It's still okay.” Izayoi said showing the young doctor her purse. “I'd still like to repay you though. I insist you come over for dinner with me and my family. I have two sons. Both around your age. Doctors too!”

 

“ Really? I'm a doctor too.” Kagome laughed. “But you really don't to repay me. It was no trouble at all getting your purse back.”

 

“ Oh, I know my son Sesshoumaru would be PERFECT for you!” Kagome opened her mouth to protest but Izayoi took out her cell phone. “Do you have a business card or something to write your address on? I'll have my son Sesshoumaru pick you up at 7.” Kagome laughed nervously and for the second time today gave her number and address away.

 

 

 

Sesshoumaru chuckled after receiving a phone call from his loopy stepmother. He loved his step-mother as though she were his own mother.. but she had her moments of being completely and utterly insane. When his mother told him the details about the man trying to steal her purse Sesshoumaru was livid and told her just to have the maids do the shopping, but she insisted that she liked shopping. Then she told him about the one who retrieved her purse, Kagome Higurashi and Sesshoumaru couldn't help but burst into laughter. Izayoi had thought that her stepson had lost it.

 

“ It's no problem Mom, really. No problem at all. No.. I don't need her address. I already have it…What? Why?.. Long story. Love you too Mom. Bye” Sesshoumaru chuckled as he imagined the bewildered look Inuyasha would have on his face when he arrived at dinner.

 

 

 

 

Kagome quickly picked up her ringing cell phone, she had just gotten Shippo to fall asleep and for the first time all day the house was quiet.

 

“ Hello, Dr. Higurashi speaking.” Kagome said quietly into the phone. She knew Inuyasha had said he would call her, but after years of dating she knew that men hardly kept to their word.

 

“ This is Sesshoumaru Takahashi.” He chuckled at the small gasp that came from the girl. “I assume you know who I am then. My dear baka of a brother seems to have misplaced your phone number after gloating about getting a date with you.”

 

“He was gloating?” Kagome laughed softly. “He's more arrogant than I thought then.”

 

“ That he is. Anyway at any moment he's going to realize that he lost your number and miserably drag himself to our bimonthly dinner with our parents. How would you like to surprise the baka by showing up with me?” Sesshoumaru said deviously.

 

“ That sounds like a good idea.” Kagome said with an equally mischievous tone.

 

“ There's a little more that goes along with this small plan, but I'll get into that later.”

 

“ All right. Pick me up at 7. You know you're nothing how Inuyasha described.” Kagome heard the demon huff on his end of the line.

 

“ The baka's talking shit?” Kagome just laughed. “I'll see you at 7.” Kagome hung up the phone. `Well that's definitely not like the commanding demon from the business meeting this morning.'

 

 

 

Kagome opened the door to reveal Sesshoumaru, looking very much like the business man he was. He was still wearing the crisp suit he wore during the meeting earlier that day and his hair was tied back in a long ponytail.

 

“ Dr. Higurashi.” Sesshoumaru said with a smirk to Kagome.

 

“ Mr. Takahashi. I feel so underdressed.” She said self consciously as she looked down to her jeans and plain shirt. “I'm a mother.. I don't really spend a fortune on clothes.. only business clothes to go beneath my lab coat.”

 

“ It's fine. It's a casual dinner. I just haven't had time to go home yet. My days aren't just 9-5 either.” Sesshoumaru said as Kagome stepped out of the apartment and locked the door. They made their way to Sesshoumaru's dark grey Mercedes-Benz.

 

“ So what else is going along with your plan?” Kagome asked they pulled away from Kagome's apartment.

 

“ Well, I was just going to try to make the little baka jealous and see what he does.” Sesshoumaru said with a smirk. “If you're up to it though.” Kagome smiled back and nodded.

 

“ Why not? Your mother said that you would apparently be the perfect match for me.” Kagome said with a wink.

 

“ Mom loves to play matchmaker.”

 

 

 

Inuyasha dragged him up the long stairs leading up to his parents' front door. He barely nodded a hello to Jakken as he walked into the house. He could hear people laughing and talking.. His older brother laugher? Impossible. He also heard some feminine laughter that didn't sound like his mother either.

 

“ Inuyasha, is that you?” The hanyou heard his mother call from the dining room. He was still mentally chastising himself for losing Kagome's number. The first decent and entertaining woman he's met in a while and he just had to be a baka and lose her number.

 

“ You must meet Sesshoumaru's date. She's a riot!” He heard his father say with a deep chuckle. Inuyasha grumbled to himself as he walked towards the dining room. `Even that asshole has a date.'

 

“ Hello little baka.” Sesshoumaru said with a smirk. “This is Kagome.” Inuyasha's eyes shot up from the floor to look at Kagome. She smiled softly to the hanyou who then glared at his brother.

 

“ I'm gonna kill you!” Inuyasha growled as he flexed a claw and looked as though he was going to lunge at his older half brother.

 

“ What are we, in high school still?” Sesshoumaru chuckled. His brother's attachment to this wench after only one day was surprising.

 

“ Don't they look perfect together?” Izayoi said with pride. “Kagome tackled the man who tried to steal my purse earlier and I thought that she and Sesshoumaru would be perfect together.”

 

“ They look perfect.” Inuyasha was still flexing a claw as he glared at his brother who stood up and walked to the other side of the table to sit down.

 

“ You left her number at the café. It's an act of kindness you twit.” Inuyasha's anger quickly dissipated and now he was just left with embarrassment. He looked over at Kagome who smiled and patted the seat next to her. She was dressed casually, a pair of tight low cut jeans and a plain form fitting red tee shirt. Even with casual clothing she looked breathtaking.

 

“ Surprised?” Kagome laughed nudging Inuyasha with an elbow.

 

“ Embarrassed.” He muttered as he picked up his chopsticks. “ Embarrassed but glad.”

 

“ You know your brother isn't how you described.” Kagome said to Inuyasha who paled slightly. “He's a complete gentleman. Not at all like a hentai.”

 

“ I never said he was a hentai!” Inuyasha croaked with a mouthful of food.

 

“ I never said you said he was a hentai. You on the other hand…” Kagome smiled and nudged Inuyasha in the ribs.

 

“ So where's that little boy I saw you with earlier?” Izayoi asked Kagome who grimaced and looked over at Inuyasha who looked shock. The silence spoke volumes. “ He didn't know did he…” Kagome turned back to Izayoi and smiled. She hadn't intended on keeping her adopted son a secret, she just wanted to be the one tell Inuyasha in private. So then she'd be able to see him run off in fear, here he couldn't run off. She wanted him to run off. She wanted to know that all men were the same.

 

“ It's okay. My son is with one of my friends right now.” Kagome said with pride. “A giant ball of energy as always.” Inuyasha remained silent for some time before speaking.

 

“ How old is he?” Inuyasha said continuing to pick at his food.

 

“ He's 3. A kitsune.” Inuyasha nodded as she spoke then his dog ears perked when he heard the last park. “That's right Dr. Takahashi. I am a miko, a human and my son is a kitsune. And that my dear man is physically impossible.” Inuyasha looked at Kagome with a raised eyebrow.

 

“ But then that means…”

 

“ He's adopted? Yes.. But that doesn't make him any less my son.” Kagome said firmly. Inuyasha threw up his hands in defense.

 

“ I would never say that. My mother has treated Sesshoumaru like her own son.. Only the Kami know why she does it though.” Inuyasha tossed a glare towards Sesshoumaru who rolled his eyes with disdain. “It doesn't bother me you have a kid.” Inuyasha said nonchalantly as he continued to eat.

 

“ Then what was with the silence for several minutes?” Kagome asked doubtfully.

 

“ What? A man can't be shocked for a few minutes?! Jeez woman.” Inuyasha huffed as he crossed his earms.

 

“ Sure they can.. but who said you were a man?” Inuyasha turned to glare at Kagome, but her smile and wink made him forget. “The perks of being a woman.” Kagome sighed with contentment before smiling to Inuyasha who was pouting.

 

 

 

The rest of the night went smoothly. Ending with Inuyasha taking Kagome home and walking her to the door of her apartment.

 

“ Tonight was nice.” Kagome said nervously as she stared at her feet. She began to laugh with embarrassment. “I feel like a whiny little girl.” Inuyasha pulled Kagome against him so their foreheads were pressed against one another and their breaths mingled together. He tiled her head to the side a bit and pressed his lips against hers briefly. As he leaned forward to place another kiss on her lips Kagome's apartment door swung open.

 

“ Mommy!” The two pulled apart as Shippo ran to Kagome's legs and hugged them.

 

“ It's late what are you doing up?” Kagome said swinging her son into her arms.

 

“ I smelled you coming. Who's this?” Shippo sniffed at Inuyasha and smiled. “He's stinky.”

 

“Why you..” Inuyasha glared at the child, but noticed the child was only kidding. “I'm Inuyasha.”

 

“ I'm Shippo.” The child bowed his head at the hanyou respectfully. “Read me a story Mommy!.. Please.” Kagome nodded as she placed Shippo on her hip.

 

“ I'll see you later Inuyasha.” Kagome said with a small smile. “Goodnight.” Inuyasha took Kagome's hand and kissed it lightly.

 

“ Goodnight.” He smirked and turned to walk away.
