Myoga looked up at the taijia, figuring he must have insulted her with the excessive comment. While it hadn't been unreasonable to swat him, he had only wanted to tease her. "Well, Sango-sama, I suppose it wasn't really THAT excessive. It has become reflex to you all over the years" Myoga chuckled wryly at his own expense.
Sango stared down at him, ashen-faced. 'Maybe he was joking? or mistaken?' "Iie, Myoga-jichan .... what... what was that part about me being pregnant?" Sango waited expectantly for his response. while her heart hammered in her ears and her breathing became labored. She recognized the signs of hyperventilation and forced herself to resume a more normal breathing pattern.
Myoga knitted his brow and regarded the young woman who was obviously trying not to panic. 'This must be something new, otherwise she would know..' He took a deep breath, exhaling slowly, before saying "Yes, Sango-sama, you are indeed with child. The taste of your blood tells me as much." He froze up waiting to gauge her reaction... he had a feeling by the way she was acting that this was not necessarily good news.
"Iie.... this can't be.... I don't want... I don't want.." Sango wrapped her arms around her knees, and was rocking back and forth slightly. Tears spilled from her eyes yet again, and when a strong pair of arms enveloped her, she welcomed it without hesitation. She continued to sob and chant "This can't be" like a mantra under her breath, oblivious to everything but the sound of her heart screaming at the injustice. She didn't hear the hanyou that held her so protectively call for Shippou, instructing the kit to run to the village and return with his mother and Kaede. She did not hear Shippou return with the two miko, she did not hear the words of comfort and support from her friends. All she saw and heard in her mind were all the terrible things she had heard over the years about unwed mothers. Foolish. Whore. She remembered the accusing glares the terrible things said towards Shiori's mother, and the stories of Inu Yasha's childhood. Traitor. Tainted. These thoughts circled through her mind until they consumed her, sending her into the sweet abyss of unconsciousness.

When Sango fainted, her friends who had just arrived became distressed. This was Sango after all.. she was bold, brave, and very strong-willed. What could have happened to reduce her to the state that she was in now? Kagome watched sadly as her friend thrashed fitfully on her futon, her face pale and her skin cold to the touch. What had affected her so? She reached out a slender hand, placing it on Sango's clammy forehead. Summoning a little of her miko power, she let the warm, pure energy seep into Sango's body. Her friend was surrounded by a pinkish white aura for a few moments, and the thrashing stopped, replaced by calm slumber. She turned to her husband, who opposite of her.
His face reflected concern as he studied their sleeping friend, she knew it was hard for her husband to deal with emotional matters. He had grown better over the years, but it was still not his strong point. The rape had hit close to home for him. After his father's death, his mother had been violated and killed by youkai who felt the need to punish her for "weakening" the great lord and giving for birth to a hanyou. He had been too young to save his mother, and he had been too late to save one of his best friends. He confessed these feelings to her the second night that Sango had stayed in their home. Kagome, while pleased her husband had felt comfortable sharing this information, was at a loss of what to say to him. Sure, it wasn't his fault, but simply saying that wouldn't do much good. It wasn't his fault that it happened, and it wasn't Sango's fault either. She had simply held him, conveying with actions instead of words the love and support she felt.
It was Sesshomaru's fault it had happened, and from the way Sango had described the entire event, it didn't sound like he was in complete control at the time. The very fact that he had apologized seemed so suspicious... wasn't he aware of what he was doing? Did his actions offend his strict moral code and sense of honor? Kagome had a sneaking suspicion that was the case. How would the youkai react when he learned there were greater consequences of his apparent loss of control?
Contrary to popular belief, Kagome doubted Sesshomaru really was as cold as he appeared to be. Why else would Tensaiga serve him so loyally, compelling him to save the lives of others? Why else did Rin, a human girl, follow him so dutifully? Why would he allow her presence, instead of just dumping her in a human village somewhere? 'No,' Kagome thought, 'InuTaisho saw something deep within his son, something that Sesshomaru locked away from the rest of the world. Tensaiga was meant to bring that side of him to the surface, to make him whole, just as Tetsaiga was meant to make Inu Yasha whole.' Kagome smiled at her reasoning, knowing instinctively that it was correct. As her miko powers had grown over the years, her natural empathy merged with her powers, gifting her with great insight to the motives and natures of others.
Kagome sighed, peering down at her sleeping friend. Her miko energy seemed to have soothed her body and mind for the time being, but there was not much she could do for the taijia when she was awake. She slowly stood, rubbing the small of her back. It had ached so much in the past few weeks, the weight of the child within her finally taking its toll on her body. Inu Yasha started to move to her side to help her, but she waved him off. She stood, and walked out to the common room to sit with Kaede. The old miko sat quietly, watching the fish grilling over the hearth, snapping and cleaning beans to be steamed as part of their evening meal.
" 'Tis distressing, child, that this has happened." Kaede's soft voice was only accompanied by the snapping of the logs in the fire and the plop of the beans as they were dropped in Kagome's steamer basket.
"Hai, Kaede-obasan, it is very distressing." Kagome replied, stirring the pot of miso she placed over the fire. "If she decides to keep the child, they would certainly be safe here. This village is far more... accepting of youkai blood than many of the others out there."
"That is true," Kaede dropped the last of the beans into the pot before continuing. "I could not help but notice ye said 'If' she keeps the child. Do ye think she might take that option?"
"Possibly. I know she will at least consider it. She is still so young, and really, we are the only ones that know of her... condition. I know Sango is worried about her honor, and her chances for her own happy family. There are still options for her... good men who wouldn't care if her virginity had been stolen from her."
"Do ye refer to Miroku-sama?" Kaede glanced over at the younger miko, curious to see her reaction to that question. Kagome visibly froze for a moment, pondering the possibility.
"I don't know, Kaede-obasan. If he has grown some self control in the past two years, I'd say it was a possibility. I was actually thinking more of the charming daimyo who proposed to her on our journey. Both men loved her, but I do not know that either of them could make her completely happy. I do not know that Sango is ready for emotional intimacy either, after what happened."
"I see... we will have to await her answer in any case."
"There IS another option" piped a small voice from the floor. Myoga perched on Kagome's shoulder, ensuring he would be heard more clearly. WAS going to end it here.... but I'll be nice....)
All eyes were on the tiny youkai on Kagome's shoulder. He stood importantly, once again mentally congratulating himself that he had something to contribute. "Well, more accurately, Sango has two options available to her should she decide to keep the pup." He paused for dramatic effect, only to be picked up by an impatient Kagome. She pinched him between her thumb and forefinger, glowering at him much like her husband would.
"Get on with it, Myoga."
"Achem, yes, of course, Kagome-sama. As I was saying, Sango-sama has two options available to her that I know of. The first would be that Sesshomaru-sama would take her as his wife. It would restore her honor, and the child would have be raised as Heir to the Western Lands. However, I really doubt that Sango-sama would agree to this arrangement. She was, after all, violently used by him. Not to mention the fact that he has been so very vocal about his dislike for hanyous."
Kagome felt the need to interject, she had to try and confirm some of her suspicions. "I agree that Sango would most likely not go along with that option. Demo, Myoga-jichan, has Sessoumaru ever said anything or done anything towards another hanyou? I mean, I always got the impression that Inu Yasha was the only one he picked fights with, and that may very well be for personal reasons, not because he is of mixed blood." Myoga thought hard for a moment, trying to recall any example of Sesshomaru trying to harm or speak lowly of another mixed-breed.
"You may very well be right, Kagome-sama. His animosity towards hanyous seems to be entirely focused on Inu Yasha-sama." he paused again briefly, what he had to say next would be hard for the young miko to hear. "She was dishonored by Sesshomaru's actions, and now the House of InuTaisho must make amends to her. If reparations are not made by the one who dishonored her, then it falls upon Inu Yasha to restore her honor. After all, until Sango-sama's child is born, Inu Yasha is heir to the Western Lands." Kagome smiled, knowing Inu Yasha would move heaven and earth if it meant helping one of his friends.
"And how would he be able to do that, Myoga-jichan?" Kagome asked, her warm smile radiating down at the small youkai.
"Well, tradition would state he would take her as a second wife, and by performing a certain ceremony, the child within her would be considered his own. Thus, her honor would be restored, and she and the child would be safe."fell towards the floor, wondering why he was suddenly free from Kagome's grip, only to see the young woman was no longer present.
i know... I'm evil, aren't i? *lets out a loud, Naga-like laugh* Oh ho ho ho ho!
Sango stared down at him, ashen-faced. 'Maybe he was joking? or mistaken?' "Iie, Myoga-jichan .... what... what was that part about me being pregnant?"
